Sunday’s Obituary~Mary Eliza Davis Rivers

Mary Eliza Davis is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

She was the youngest daughter of Michael Davis and Hulda Rivers; born November 23, 1853 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

At age 17, about 1870, she married Dock Wesley Rivers. Together they raised twelve children, 4 daughters and 8 sons.

On 15 April 1917, at age 63, Mary Eliza died suddenly leaving her husband and 12 children to mourn.

Chesterfield, April 20.-- Mrs. D. W. Rivers, of the Zoar section of this county died on Sunday night. Mrs. Rivers was apparently in good health and died very suddenly at 10 o'clock on Sunday night. On Monday afternoon the body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Zoar church. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J. L. Tyler. Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of the late Michael Davis, and while quite young, was married to Dock W. Rivers.
Besides her husband and one sister, Mrs. James Ross of Chesterfield, Mrs. Rivers is survived by 12 children, all of whom live in this county and are among the best citizens of the State.

This is an ongoing series on the children of Thomas Davis and his wife Nancy Rivers. Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers are my 4th great grandparents. They had 11 known children that lived to adulthood.

This is a summary of the articles on Thomas, Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca and Sarah Jane Davis.

Thus far, we have taken a look at 10 of the 11 children of Thomas and Nancy Rivers Davis. Those ten are Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca, Sarah Jane, Michael Davis and Mary “Polly” Davis.

Today’s posting is on child number 11 – John Calvin Davis, My 3rd Grand Uncle.

John Calvin Davis was born on 14 Dec 1812 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹ ² ³ He appeared in censuses for Chesterfield County, South Carolina, from 1820 through 1860.⁴ ⁵ John died on 12 Jul 1865 and was buried in the Kite Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁶ ⁷ Vital statistic pages from his Family Bible are on file in the Darlington County Genealogical Society.⁸ A Memorial has been created for John at www.findagrave.com.⁹ ¹⁰
John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst were married on 31 Jan 1836 in Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina. Charlotte Hurst, daughter of Philip Hurst and Elizabeth, was born on 9 Jul 1816 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^11–12 ¹³ ¹⁴ She appeared in the census in 1880 in Cole Hill, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.¹⁵ Charlotte died on 2 Jun 1888 in Darlington, South Carolina and was buried in the Kite cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.¹⁶ ^17–18 A Memorial has been created for her at www.findagrave.com.¹⁹ Her estate, Estate Folder #160, Estate of Charlotte [HURST] DAVIS, was probated at Chesterfield County, South Carolina.²⁰

I, Arnie V. Davis, of the above State and County do make the following WILL, revoking all former wills by me made:-
I. I nominate, constitute, and appoint my husband J. A. Davis, the executor of this my Will.
II. I give, devise, and bequeath unto my husband J. A. Davis, the lands deeded to me by him of late November 25, 1914, to wit:- a 150 acre tract, 70 acre tract, 300 acre tract, and 565 acre tract all of said land being more fully described in said deed.
III. All the rest of my property, real and personal I give, devise, and bequeath unto my children, share and share alike, the child or children of any child that may die before me to take the part the parent would have taken, if living, except two children Verdie and Ola Davis, shall receive in addition any part in the Coke Davis Estate Lands.

Arnie Violet Douglass Davis died 22 March 1918 in Florence, South Carolina. She was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Obituary: After an illness of a few days, Mrs. J. A. Davis died at the Florence hospital. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.E. Carter, at Bethel Saturday. Mrs. Davis has been a devoted member of the Methodist church a number of years. She was universally loved. The profoundest sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family. Left to mourn her death is a husband, five children, a mother and five brothers and six sisters. Buried at Bethel Cemetery.[2]

Treasure Chest Thursday~Julius Johns Death Certificate

My maternal grandparents died before I was born; Grandpa Julius was hit by an automobile on May 15, 1937 and died the following day in a Monroe,Union County, NC hospital. Grandma Mamie died in the Doctor office of a heart attack, 1 year, 1 month and 1 day later on 17 June 1938.

For years I looked for a Death Certificate or an obituary for my grandparents without success. Then one year while home, on leave from the Air Force, my aunt calmly said well your grandfather didn't die here; the closest hospital in 1937 was in Monroe, NC and that is where I found the treasure that I am sharing today.

The following is a transcription of this death certificate (typed parts= normal type, Certificate blanks are bold and underlined):

The information on this death certificate was given by Carl Johns, the oldest son of Julius Johns, and matches information I found during my research. Julius was born March 4, 1887 and died May 16, 1937 at age 50. His Father Joe Johns was born in Chesterfield County instead of Marlboro County as indicated on this Death Certificate.

After this Death Certificate was found an obituary for Julius was also found. No obituary or death certificate has been found for his wife, my Grandmother, Mary Catherine “Mamie” Brock Johns. Her death is recorded on her tombstone at Zoar Cemetery as June 17, 1938 exactly one year, one month and one day after the death of her husband.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

Today’s posting is Dower release of a Land Deed between Frederick Rivers and Malachi J. Rivers. [Father to Son]. The original; Land Deed , dated December 6, 1867 is recorded Chesterfield County Deed Book 1, page 241. Frederick Rivers, the father, sold his son, Malachi 100 acres of land for two hundred dollars.¹

Sunday’s Obituary~J. Henry Davis

J. Henry Davis

b. Apr. 18, 1897

d. Nov. 4, 1917

J. Henry Davis, a young farmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Davis, of Cheraw, died in a hospital in Florence last Sunday. The body was laid to rest on Monday at Zoar Methodist Church. The funeral service conducted by the Rev. J. L. Tyler. Mr. Davis had been ill for several days, and from the first of his illness little hope was entertained for his recovery. Beside his parents, and a young bride of a few months, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Herbert Thomas; and I . J. Davis, Lucius Davis and three younger brothers.¹

There several conflicts in the birth and death of Henry Davis. Both his obituary and SC Death Certificate #20273 shows that he died on November 4, 1917 while his tombstone shows November 3, 1917. ²
The 1900 Census has his birth as Mar 1896 and the tombstone has his birth as April 18, 1897. ³
J. Henry Davis, leaves his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John C. Davis, a young bride of a few months. I haven’t identified his young bride yet.

J. Henry Davis is my second cousin twice removed.

Thus far, we have taken a look at 9 of the 11 children of Thomas and Nancy Rivers Davis. Those nine are Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca, Sarah Jane and Michael Davis.

Today’s posting is on child number 10 – Mary “Polly” Davis, My 3rd Grand Aunt.

Mary "Polly" Davis was born on 25 Jun 1808 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ She was the tenth child of Thomas and Nancy Rivers and their youngest of five daughters.

Mary “Polly” Davis never married. In 1860 and 1880 she was living in the household of her brother Michael Davis and his wife Hulda Rivers Davis.

She died on 20 May 1890 at the age of 81 and was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁷ ⁸ A Memorial has been created for Polly at www.findagrave.com.⁹

Treasure Chest Thursday~39 Years, William A. Purvis Timeline, Final Chapter

In part 1, we learned that the earliest known document found for William A. Purvis was the 1860 census. We saw the birth of his only child, a son and his involvement in a lawsuit with the heirs of Joseph P. Smith. We closed that period of his life with the 1870 census where young William was listed as 6 years old.

In part 2, we saw William and Sarah purchasing land in order to plant crops and make their living as farmers.

60 acres purchased from Joseph P. Smith on 6 Dec 1866 (Land in SC)
60 acres purchased from James L. Edwards on 21 December 1871
30 acres purchased from William P. Brantley on 21 December 1872
25 acres purchased from Mary, Sarah and Martha Gardner on 23 July 1979

In part 3, we saw that Great Great Grandpa and Grandma had a rough time farming and by early 1890 had sold off most of their land. Then tragedy struck and Great Grandma died from cancer in December 1893. Great Grandpa is left along to pick up the pieces.

Sometime after Sarah’s death in December 1893 and September 1899, Great Great Grandpa William A. Purvis re-married. Remember the lady – Elizabeth Purvis with daughter, Mary J. Purvis living in the Purvis household¹ in 1880; since 1880 she has had another child, Ella Frances and now she and William A. Purvis are living as husband and wife.

The primary document attesting to this scenario is a September 1899 land deed² - W. A. Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis to J. D. Rhyne, Anson Co., NC, Book 33, Page 370. In this land Deed, William is splitting up his last 30 acres of land and selling off 12 acres for a mere fifty-four dollars ($54.00). This piece of land is part of a tract of land purchased by William A. Purvis back in the 1870’s.

No husband or prior record has been found for Elizabeth Purvis before her appearance in the William A. Purvis household in 1880. This Land Deed (DB 33:370) is now the second document found that mention Elizabeth or Betsy Purvis. William A. Purvis is still living when he executed this Land Deed on 23 September 1899.

The 1900 census³ for Anson County has Elizabeth and Ella Frances living on the land purchased by William A. Purvis.

Elizabeth’s daughter Mary Jane married Charles Franklin Lang back in 1888 and died during childbirth in March 1895. Her baby daughter, Frances Elizabeth “Effie” Lang survived.

This is consistent with Betsy reporting that she is a widow with 2 children and one (1) living. The census was enumerated on June 28, 1900; thus, her husband William A. Purvis died between September 23, 1899 and June 28, 1900. No tombstone has been found for William A. Purvis. He died before the initiation of state-wide vital statistics documentation.

On September 30, 1900, Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis sold the last remaining 18 acres to Jefferson D. Rhine binding 6 acres into a lifetime estate.⁴

“Betsy reserve form this land Six acres being the lot upon which is situated her house. She to retain said Six acres for & during the time of her natural life and at her death the said lot of six acres to go with this other land as herein described,"

By 1910, Betsy has abandoned the land is living with her daughter Ella Frances and new son-in-law, Thomas T. Tarlton. Two children are enumerated in the home, their son, Roy and daughter Carrie.⁵

Betsy Purvis died 18 October 1926 in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina and was buried 19 Oct, 1926 in an unmarked grave in the Mizpah Cemetery.⁶

Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day.⁷[The Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Richmond County, NC, Thursday, October 21, 1926, Page 6, Column 2 - Deaths]

Elizabeth “Betsy” Previtte Purvis birth date is unknown. In 1880, she was 30 years old, born in NC. In 1900 she gave her birth as Oct 1869, age 40, born in NC.

In 1910, her age is listed as 62 and she was born in NC. Then we have her death certificate where her birth is listed as abt 1836, age 90. This date was carried over to the Obituary.

No female by the name of Elizabeth Previtte has been found in local county records. She states in 1900 that she had two children – Mary Jane & Ella Frances and one was deceased. Her first child, Mary J. was not born until abt 1873, age 7 in 1880 census. If she was born in 1836 then she was 37 years of age when her first child was born.

The books have been temporarily closed on William A. Purvis. He was twice married; his first wife Sarah Jane Graves and his second, Elizabeth “Betsy” Previtte Purvis. William and Sarah had one child, my great grandfather William James Purvis.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis had two children. It is not known for certain if these two daughters are the children of William A. Purvis or a close relative. No close relative has been found for William A. Purvis. His parentage has been a “brick wall” to this researcher for the past 37 years.
The parentage of Elizabeth “Betsy” Privette is also unknown. No record of her has been found prior to 1880.

This “brick wall'” has been very frustrating. If any of you, my followers and readers, would care to take on a challenge I would welcome your time in taking a look at this lineage and see if I have missed anything.

Tombstone Tuesday~W. T. Brock

William T. “Bill” Brock, was born May 17, 1854 and died July 22, 1913. The only known source of William T. Brock birth and death dates is this tombstone in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.¹

In fact, this tombstone is in conflict with what is known from the 1860 and 1900 Population Census. ²

Then we have the 1900 Population Census³where William and his family is listed and where his birth is listed as May 1857 and his age is listed as 43.

William is a son of Hezekiah Brock and his wife Sarah Morris. We can see that in 1860 William was listed as 3 years old and in 1900 he is listed as 43.

Clearly, census evidence suggests that William T. Brock was in fact born in May 1857 and not in May 1854 as indicated on his tombstone.

Compounding events over the past 150 years has resulted in a major gap in records for Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

March 1865 – The courthouse and all civil records were destroyed by the Northern Army – Courthouse and records burned.
Chesterfield County newspapers prior to 1900 are very minimal. Almost all county specific newspapers, of that era, have been destroyed. Some news events are recorded in the Charleston, Georgetown and Columbia newspapers of the time period.

Tax records for the late 1700 through the early 1900 are not available; if there are I haven’t found them.
Most land deeds prior to March 1865 were destroyed during the War. Some were re-recorded after the Civil War; most were not.
William T. Brock died before the mandatory requirement for state wide recording of births and death.

This is a prime example of the difficulty of research in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Major gaps exist in early pre civil war historical records for the County making research in the county very problematic.

As stated previously, William T. Brock was the son of Hezekiah Brock and Sarah “Sallie” Morris, my 2nd great grandparents. Therefore, William T. Brock is my Great Grand Uncle.

Military Monday~War Atrocities

SPECIAL ORDERS,
HDQRS. SEVENTEENTH ARMY CORPS, Numbers 56.
Thirteen Miles from Cheraw, S. C., March 2, 1865.
I. In accordance with instructions from the major-general commanding the army, directing that for each of our men murdered by the enemy a life of one of the prisoners in our hands should be taken, Major J. C. Marven, provost-marshal, Seventeenth Army Corps, will select from the prisoners in his charge one man and deliver him to Big. General M. F. Force, commanding Third Division, to be shot to death in retaliation for the murder of Private R. M. Woodruff, Company H, Thirtieth Illinois Volunteers, a regularly detailed forager, who was beaten to death by the enemy near Blakeny's Bridge on or about the 1st of March, 1865. ^[1]
At a New Year 1864 celebration, Private R. M. Woodruff gave the NEW YEAR’S ADDRESS to the Soldier of Sherman’s Grand Army. Where this celebration took place I do not know but a printed copy of a flyer/handout from the event is in the Digital Collections at Duke University and can be viewed here:^[2]

The death of Private R. M. Woodruff by the Southern Military forces resulted in the murder of Private James Madison Miller on 2 March 1865 by the Northern Army. Private Miller, a Methodist Minister, is buried near Pageland in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.^[3]
In 1879, General William T. Sherman gave his famous speech to a class of Cadets in Michigan where he stated “War is Hell”.

I wondered if he was reflecting on his actions during the Civil War?

Sunday Obituary~Dr. Alva Brock

Charlotte, Oct. 28.-- Alva Brock, formerly a druggist of Columbia and a brother of Mrs. W. W. Coker¹ of that city, died in a local hospital here early this morning after a short illness, and funeral services will be conducted at the late residence here tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Burial will be in a local cemetery.
Mr. Brock, born in Cheraw April 24, 1889 was educated at the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of the state of South Carolina. He was engaged in the drug business in Columbia for several years before coming here to reside six years ago he leaves his wife, formally Miss Nancy Hutchison of Ninety-Six, S.C., and four children.²
After Dr. Alva passed away, Nancy and the children moved from Charlotte, NC to the Sanford area of Florida. They can be found there in the US Population Census for 1940.³

Surname Saturday~Michael, Son, Thomas Davis Family

This is an ongoing series on the children of Thomas Davis and his wife Nancy Rivers. Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers are my 4th great grandparents.They had 11 known children that lived to adulthood.

This is a summary of the articles on Thomas, Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca and Sarah Jane Davis.

Michael Davis¹ was born on 13 Mar 1806 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.² ³ ⁴ ⁵ He appeared in the census in 1840 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.⁶ He and his family are enumerated in census from 1850 to 1880 for Chesterfield County. ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ¹⁰ Michael died on 26 Apr 1883 at the age of 77 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹¹ He was buried in the cemetery at Zoar United Methodist Church, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹² A Memorial has been created for him at www.findagrave.com.¹³
Michael Davis and Hulda "Huldy" Rivers were married in 1832 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Hulda "Huldy" Rivers, daughter of William Rivers and Elizabeth "Betsy" Rivers, was born on 13 Oct 1816 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.¹⁴ ¹⁵ ¹⁶ ¹⁷ ¹⁸ She died on 4 Jun 1881 at the age of 64 and was buried in in the cemetery at Zoar United Methodist Church, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹⁹ ²⁰ A Memorial has been created for Huldy at www.findagrave.com.²¹
