Surname Saturday~Walter, 3 Wives and Eleven Children

Walter Joseph Johns Sr. was born on 2 Aug 1883. On his World War I Draft Registration Card Walter lists his birth date as 2 August 1878 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina.1 The birth date recorded on this form is definitely a bogus date. His Father was unmarried in 1880 and his alleged Mother was single and only age 10 according to the 1880 Census. In the 1900 census his birth is recorded as August 1883; definitely a more accurate date.2

Walter Joseph married Arletha Quick, on 2 February 1914 in Marlboro County, SC. Arletha Quick was born September 1894, a daughter of William Quick and Sabre Cope.3

Walter Joseph Johns and Arletha Quick had the following children:
        i.    Blanche Johns was born on 2 Sep 1914 in Marlboro County, South Carolina.4 She died on 22 Aug 1915 at the age of 0 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 5        ii.    William Fletcher Johns Sr., born 15 Oct 1915, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 5 Apr 1988, Kokomo, Howard, Indiana.6 7
iii.    Huey Johns was born on 21 Jun 1917 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 26 Jun 1917 at the age of 0 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 8
iv.    Walter Joseph Johns Jr., born 7 Sep 1918, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 8 Jul 1985, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.9

vi.    Monroe Johns19 was born on 19 May 1924 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina
. He died on 10 Feb 2000 at the age of 75 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.11Never married.
vii.    Henry Joseph Johns was born on 6 Mar 1927 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He died on 14 Oct 1927 at the age of 0 in McColl, Marlboro, South Carolina.
12

Walter Joseph Johns second wife was Blanche Scott. 13

Walter Joseph Johns Sr. and Blanche Scott were married on 10 Aug 1927 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. Blanche is not listed in the household in the 1930 census and Walter Joseph Johns is listed as a widow. [It is presumed that she died probably with childbirth complications; but no evidence has been found as to her demise.]
No known children have been found for this union.

Walter Joseph Johns third wife was Ellen Grooms, daughter of John Grooms and Jane Purvis.14

Walter Joseph Johns Sr. and Ellen Grooms were married on 22 Aug 1933 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Ellen Grooms, daughter of John Grooms and Jane Purvis, was born on 2 Dec 1900 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 4 Jun 1974 at the age of 73 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was buried on 6 Jun 1974 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 15

Walter Joseph Johns and Ellen Grooms had the following children:
         i.    Louis Johns, born 6 Jul 1934, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 10 Oct 2008, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.16
ii.    Fannie Lee Johns was born on 17 Apr 1936 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She died on 31 Jul 1955 at the age of 19 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina.17
iii.    Margaret Johns, born 20 Feb 1940, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 24 Jan 2010, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.18        iv.     Mary Catherine Johns was born on 20 Feb 1940 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 30 Mar 1940 at the age of 0 in  Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
19

Walter Joseph was married three times. Between these three unions are eleven known children; all listed above with their respective parents.

Walter Joseph Johns was my Grand Uncle.

Anna J. Douglass Sellers Final Resting Place

Phillip Albert Sellers, son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis died 6 April 1896 leaving his wife Anna J. Douglass and  seven of his eight children surviving him.1

In the 1900 Census for Chesterfield County, Anna J. Sellers can be found in the Courthouse Township with three of her surviving children; Hardy, age 24, Daniel C., age 20 and Mary, age 15.2

In 1910, she was living in Green Bay, Covington County, Alabama with her daughter Sarah Jane “Sallie” and son-in-law, Benjamin J. Hilton.3

I had reports that Anna Jane Douglass Sellers passed away in 1914 in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama but no confirmation of these facts. Her death date as reported on her FindAGrave Memorial is 7 February 1914. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Elba, Alabama. I could not find her in the Alabama 1881-1974 Death and Burial Index.4

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage License Samuel Atkinson and Lecty Huneycutt

Lecty Huneyctt is the baby daughter of my 2nd Great Grandparents, James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth “Salle” Page Huneycutt. Lecty is my Great Grand Aunt.

In  the 1910 Census for Stanly County, NC, she is married to Samuel Atkinson and has two children in their household. In the Census it’s reported that they had been married for 9 years and had 3 children, 2 living. So for many years my database fact for Lecty and Samuel marriage has been, “Married abt 1901, Stanly County, North Carolina.”

The search for their marriage license has been ongoing for years and this past week I was successful in finding their Marriage License in Anson County, North Carolina.

Marriage License - Samuel Atkinson & Lecty Huneycutt

Samuel Atkinson and Lecty Huneycutt were married on 8 May 1902  by Justice of the Peace D. A. McGregor at Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina.

Witnesses were: John H. Eddins and Dan Sanders. Zack Deese applied for license for the couple.  Zack Deese is the brother of John Calvin and Henry Harrison that married Lecty sisters Louvena and Nellie Isabelle Huneycutt.

Tombstone Tuesday~Sarah A. Williams Purvis

Sarah A. Williams Purvis
b 1 June 1830
d. 3 June 1888
bu. Antioch Cemetery
Wife of Geo. Purvis

IMG_0693
For many years I tried to get information on the second wife of George W. Purvis without success. George and his Wife Sarah are buried in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Rankin County, Mississippi.1  2

Also buried in that same cemetery is:
Sarah E. Purvis 3
b.  18 June 1830
d. 9 June 1906
The inscription on this Tombstone reads: “"Sarah E. Wife of George Purvis"

I had two choices but with no knowledge of the Cemetery and no photos of their burial location I had no way to determine which of these two Sarah’s were the second wife of George W. Purvis (1809-1897).

So this past Christmas the wife and I drove to Dallas to spend Christmas with our daughter and son-in-law. Jackson, Mississippi was on our direct path to Texas. The Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery was at the top of my list of things to do and places to visit.

As you can see in this photo; Sarah A. Purvis is buried beside George W. Purvis.

George W. Purvis was born in 1809 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He migrated with his family to Mississippi about 1818. he first married Mary Ann Patrick on 19 October 1838. Mary Ann died about 1859. 4

After the death of Mary Ann, George married Sarah A. Williams Huff on 31 August 1867. She was previously married to Washington G. Huff who perished in the Civil War. George and Mary Ann had eight children. Sarah brought three of her four children into the marriage and together George and Sarah had two additional children, both boys. 5

Sarah died on 3 June 1888 leaving George to raise their two sons; John S. Purvis, age 20 and Robert Washington Purvis, age 13. Sarah and George are buried in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.6

Military Monday~Artie Hurst, Application for Admission to Confederate Home and Infirmary

Artie Elizabeth Hurst was born 22 February 1876, the seventh of eight children to William Monroe Hurst and his wife Mary E. Powell. 1

Her Father, William Monroe Hurst, served with Company D, 6th SC Cavalry, Aiken’s Regiment Partisan Rangers. He enlisted 1 June 1863 and served  for duration of the war with one furlough for unstated sickness. 2

William and Mary married about 1854 and had four children before the War and four children after the war. Artie Elizabeth siblings were 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
In 1908, the SC General Assembly established a Confederate Infirmary for elderly CSA veterans their wives, widows and children. To qualify the veteran had to be at least 70 years old and destitute.

“The state opened the Confederate Home and Infirmary in Columbia in 1909 to house two infirm and destitute veterans from each county. Widows and wives were admitted beginning in 1925 and sisters, daughters, and nieces were admitted in later years. The home was closed in 1958.”3

Thus, on 4 June 1951, at the age of 75, Miss Artie Hurst, daughter of William Monroe Hurst, a CSA Veteran submitted her application for admission to the SC Confederate Infirmary. In her application, Artie stated that of her family only two brothers (Phillip Preston and L. Wesley) were living and that they also were old and infirmed.
Artie was admitted to the Home on 22 June 1951. She died at the Home on 22 February 1955 and was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, McFarland, Anson County, North Carolina. 4

I wonder how many visits she had from her extended family during the four years she remained at the Home. Columbia, South Carolina is about 84 miles SW of Chesterfield, South Carolina. Seven siblings is a lot of nieces and nephews.

Household of William James Rivers

William James Rivers was born 13 September 1830, the 1st born son of Frederick C. Rivers and Sarah Ann Hurst. He had an older sister Charlotte and over the next 20 years a total of thirteen additional siblings.

At this point I feel I need to set the record straight  on William’s given name. many have taken it upon themselves and refer to William as William Jasper Rivers. The Family Bible shows that his name IS NOT William Jasper but his correct name is William James Rivers.

William James Rivers married Lydia Jane Massey on 12 February 1857. He was 26 year of age and she was 21. Their 1st child was born 9 months and 1 day later on 13 November 1857; they called him Frederick William Rivers. William James and Lydia had 3 small children and another one due at the time that William James enlisted into the Confederate Army.

William James enlisted with Company “B’ 26th SC Volunteers in January 1862 and served throughout the duration of the war. His time in the Civil War was uneventful except for several bouts of illness one of which resulted in him being hospitalized.  The birth of his 5th child in September 1864 shows that he was home on furlough around December 1863 or January 1864. His military records shows he revived new clothing on 30 July 1864, just months prior to the birth of his daughter, Mary E. Rivers.  At this point there are 5 children; 3 boys and 2 girls. Sometime after the birth of Mary in September 1864, her older sister Sarah E. passed away in 1865. No known date exist on this death.

After the War, William James and Lydia would have 5 additional children, 3 boys and 2 girls bringing the family total to ten. After the loss of Mary E. in 1865 they would lose son Phillip born  10 Mar 1862 in June 1870. The remaining 8 children; 5 sons and 3 daughters, would reach adulthood and have families of their own.

William James Rivers and Lydia Jane Massey had the following children:

i. Frederick William "Fed" Rivers, born 13 Nov 1857, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Charlotte Jane Hurst, 12 Feb 1882, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 13 Jul 1925, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Sarah E. Rivers was born on 8 Apr 1859 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She died in 1865 at the age of 6 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii. Isaac Berkley Rivers, born 4 Jul 1860, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Effie Wadsworth, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 27 Mar 1913, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv. Phillip Rivers was born on 10 Mar 1862 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He died in Jun 1870 at the age of 8 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
BIRTH: Loose sheet stuck in Family Bible shows a Date of birth of 10 March 1862 for Phillip H. Rivers. Copy of this page was provided to Kathy Lee by her Aunt Flora Belle Sellers Huntley of Chesterfield, SC.
v. Mary E. Rivers, born 9 Sep 1864, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Phillip Opley Melton; died 21 Apr 1931, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vi. John Lewis Rivers, born 2 May 1866, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Rosanna Hurst, abt 1888; died 18 Feb 1947, Kingsland,Cleveland Co.,AR.
vii. Jacob B. Rivers, born 17 Nov 1867, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Annie Curtis; died 16 Feb 1924, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

In his latter years William James spent many hours with his first born grandchild,  Sarah Elizabeth “Bess” Rivers,  daughter of Frederick William Rivers and Charlotte Jane “Lottie” Hurst.  The photo below of William James and Bess, courtesy of Kathy Lee, is one that has survived the years.
