There are many old tombstones located within Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Sadly, a lot of the older tombstones have degraded, just as the one above, over time. It’s very important that we document exiting tombstones and post their photos on-line with FindAGrave, BillionGraves or others to preserve them for posterity. They should also be maintained locally in genealogical and historical societies.

Nancy Copeland married William Aaron Thurman, son of John Thurman and Anne Perkins, about 1825. This marriage year is based on the birth of their first born, a daughter,  named Rosa Ann, born in 1826.

After the birth of eight children, Nancy Copeland Thurman died on 17 November 1843 at the age of 47.

It’s Family Time~The Allen McDaniel Page Family

It's Family Time
Sometimes the unanswered questions leaves a big gap in our family histories. Such is the case of Allen McDaniel Page. I feel certain that Allen sudden death in 1854 caught all his family and friends off guard.

Allen McDaniel Page was born 14 August 1829, the first born child of  Sion Page and his wife Nancy.  Nancy‘s surname is unknown; some have her listed as Nancy Dove, others says she was Nancy Almond.

Allen grew up like many young men of that era as a farmer. On 8 December 1853, Allen married a young lady by the name of Sarah Huneycutt, daughter of Marcus I. ‘Mark’ Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry.

Less than a year later Mark McDaniel Huneycutt has passed away. Allen Page's Probate folder, Stanly County, shows that he died prior to 13 October 1854 the date that Sarah Page petitioned the court to set aside a years provision and appoint 3 freeholders to inventory the estate.

Before his passing, Allen witnessed the birth of his daughter, Tabitha Irene ‘Bitha’ Huneycutt on 21 June 1854.

No tombstone has been found for Allen or his wife Sarah ‘Sallie’ Huneycutt Page. Sarah is found in the 1900 with her daughter and son-in-law Calvin Almond. No other record beyond this has been found.

This short marriage and duration as a family leaves a lot of unanswered questions. If you have any information about Allen and Sarah I would love to hear from you.

Allen McDaniel Page is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

Records of the SC Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1865-1872

After the Civil War times were rough and the period between 1865 and 1877 was known as the reconstruction era.  Many women and children were left to fend for themselves having lost their husbands, fathers and sons during the war.
The Federal Government stepped in and provided rations for those who met the qualification.

This is page 1 of the ration list with 3 families listed; 1 white and 2 African American.

Freemen Rations

The the family of Calvin Allen.

Calvin Allen

Calvin states that he lived in Oro, Chesterfield County. Oro, was a Post Office established in 1867. Oro was near the NC line between Pageland and Chesterfield.

Oro, Chesterfield, SC

The upper Corner shows his age as 38 which would indicate he was born about 1828 if these are indeed 1867 records. Census records confirmed he was borne 1828-1829.

He lives on the Lancaster highway and had 7 children; 3 males and 4 female. Their age is not shown but on many of the recordings age is shown.

The family was issued rations of Pork and Corn in both May and June 1867.

This file is well worth spending some time browsing through the individual listings.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #318– Pleasant A. Brock

Chesterfield County SC Estate Series:  This is a series of postings of selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today’s subject is the Estate of  Pleasant A. Brock.

Pleasant A. Brock’s Estate Folder (#318) consists of 25 pages beginning at Image 1141 of 1448  and ending with image 1165 of 1448. The estate was well inventoried and precise with the Widow, Martha Horne Brock, serving as the estate administratrix.

The court appointment of an administratrix shows that Pleasant A. Brock died intestate (without a Will).

I was amazed at the precise inventory by room of this estate and the penmanship of the person recording the estate contents. This is most certain the penmanship of Martha Horne Brock.

Martha petitioned the Court on 1 May 1873 to be granted Letters of Administration.

Mattie was granted letters to administer the estate and did so with the help of Attorney L. W. T. Prince. No mention of Pleasant's death date is made within the probate file but we know from his tombstone in the St. David's Episcopal Church cemetery that he died of 28 February 1873. His family Bible shows that Pleasant died from typhoid fever. Pleasant was a Merchant in the town of Cheraw.

Pleasant A. Brock was the son of Alsey Brock and Lucy Morris. He had one brother Charles A. Brock.

After his death, Mattie Horne Brock married Thomas Alexander Gandy on  20 July 1875. When last reviewed the Family Bible was in possession of the Gandy family.

Pleasant and Martha had no children. Martha and Thomas A. Gandy did have four children; 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Pleasant A. Brock is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed.
