Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #582 – Hiram Kenneth Jenkins, Sr.

Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folder from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed by the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

You never know what you will find in a Probate folder but I do believe this one contains the least information I have ever found within a folder. Hiram Jenkins died in 1892 and that was 126 years ago. It is quite possible that at one time this folder contained additional information that has been since removed from the folder. On the other hand this may be all that was ever in the folder.

State of South Carolina}   Court
County of Chesterfield}  of Probate
The petition of E. A. Jenkins shows to this Court
I. That Kinneth Jenkins a citizen of the County of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid died intestate on the 27th of Dec. 1893 leaving a small personal estate amounting to about one hundred Dollars upon which Administration will be necessary in order that the same may be settled.
II. That your petitioner is the wife of deceased and is first entitled.
Wherefore your petitioner prays for letters of Administration upon the estate of said intestate.

Witness: D. W. Coker

Eliza A. (Jordan) Jenkins was granted letters to administer the estate of her husband Hiram Kenneth Jenkins, Sr.

Image 616 above shows that Hiram died 27 Dec 1893. The letter is in error most likely made because the estate was administered at the beginning of a new year. His tombstone contains what I believe is the correct death date recorded as 27 December 1892.
