Who Is The Father of Mary Jane Purvis Lang and Ella Frances Purvis Tarlton

For years I have continued to return to the two children of Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis; her daughters, Mary Jane Purvis and Ella Frances Purvis struggling to find clues to their heritage. There is no doubt that we are related.  It has been proven with the below partial DNA results.

These results show that Ella Frances Purvis's descendants share a total of 107.5 cM over 5 shared segments the largest segment being 69.6 cM on Chr 12.

Largest segment = 69.6 cM
Total Half-Match segments (HIR) = 107.5 cM (2.998 Pct)
Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 3.5
5 shared segments found for this comparison.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis first appeared in my lineage very early in my Purvis research which I began in October 1976. While researching my Great Grandfather William James Purvis. In the 1880 Census Soundex not only was William James Purvis listed but also a William A. Purvis Sarah J. Purvis, Betsy Purvis, and others.

In my 2nd Great-grandfather household was a young lady named Betsy Purvis, age 30, born in SC with a daughter Mary J. age 7.

But who was this Betsy Purvis?

Next I found that in the 1900 census that Betsy was a Widow with a  daughter named Ella Purvis, age 13, born Dec. 1886.

I learned that Mary Jane Purvis, b. 1973 married  Charles Franklin Lang about 1888 and by 1900 had remarried to a Dora Watkins abt 1898. Mary J,. had obviously died at and after the birth of her 4th child, Frances Elizabeth Lang in March 1895.

In the 1900 Census, we find Charles Lang and Dora {Watkins} who have been married 2 years and have one child; but Charles had 4 children's listed the first three by his deceased wife Mary Jane Purvis.

Time has continued to pass and the research goes. Still, I have learned nothing about who Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis? Who is her husband, who is the Father of Mary Jane, born 1873 and is that same person the father of Ella Frances Purvis borne December 1886?

In an attempt to break through this morass I sent off for the SS-5 of Ella Frances Purvis Tarlton. That SS-5 is shown here:

The above SS-5 shows that the parents of Ella P. Tarlton are Billie Pervis and Betty Prevett.

A September 1899 Deed also shows that W. A. Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis sold Land to Jefferson D. Rhine in September 1899 (DB 33, pg 370).

Until this deed, the only known wife of William A. Purvis was Sarah Jane Graves whom he married 10 June 1852 and remained married to her until her death in December 1893. When did William A. marry Elizabeth and is Elizabeth the same Elizabeth found in the William A. Purvis household in 1880 Anson County Census?

The SS-5 says that Ella Frances's father is Billie Purvis. Is he also the father of Mary Jane Purvis. Are William A. Purvis and Billie Purvis the same individual?

There are still so many unanswered questions about how individuals named within this blog are related. If you have any information please contact me through this blog.

These two children, Mary Jane and Ella Frances, are most likely my 2nd or 3rd Cousin.

The Last Will and Testament of Charlotte (Jones) Lambeth

Our knowledge of the life of Charlotte Jones is very limited. Her parents are unknown at present. Most of the data known about Charlotte was obtained from a Cheraw County Equity records dated 1846.

[#12] Gainey, Lewis, Wm. H. Gainey + others vs. Charlotte Gainey - Bill for account and specific delivery of property 1846

A record of her first marriage to Jacob P. Gainey in 1836 was found in a Fayetteville Newspaper.

MARRIAGE: Fayetteville Newspaper 1816-1840, Fayetteville Observer and Predecessor Papers. August 11, 1836, In same county, recently, Mr. Jacob GANEY of SC to Miss Charlotte JONES of Anson.

After the death of her husband, Jacob P. Ganey on 4 April 1845, Charlotte married Amos Lambeth of  Randolph County, NC on 1 Dec 1846. This turned out to be a bad marriage for Charlotte with Amos abandoning her and absconding with some of the slaves of the Jacob P. Gainey estate. Much of the equity record deals with who has rightful ownership to the estate of Jacob P. Gainey and Lewis Gainey. The entire Equity suit runs over 120+ pages.

Charlotte outlived Amos by many years passing away on 23 July 1891 at the age of 84 years. Her Tombstone can be viewed here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/48501608?search=true

Prior to World War I, our military was very limited in size. Realizing that it was becoming inevitable to avoid entry into the war in Europe, Congress passed the Selective Service Act of 1917 requiring all men between the age of 21-30 to register for the draft. In August 1918, at the War Department request, the Act was amended and expanded to include all men between the ages of 18-45.

This amendment resulted in my Grandfather James Frances Purvis registering for the draft on 12 September 1918.

At the time of registering, James Frances Purvis was married with 3 boys ranging in age between 1 and 7 years. One of those boys was my Father. Two months after registering for the draft, WWI ended on 11 November 1918. Grandpa has been spared from having to leave his family.

James Frances Purvis is my Grandfather. He died six years before I was born.

To this union was born a son Squire James Rivers on 13 March 1851. Sadly, Mary A Brock Rivers did not survive the birth of her child thus leaving William Alfred a widow with a baby to raise. Squire H and Rachel played a major role in raising this child.

Mary Jane Daughter of Cameron Adams

Mary Jane Adams, born 8 June 1842 is the daughter of Cameron Adams and his wife Jane Copeland. She was sixth born of eleven children born to Cameron and Jane.

Her tombstone shows her death as 28 Feb. 1927 but her NC Death certificate has her date of death as 30 Jan 1927.

Many online trees show Mary Jane married to Peter Groomes. She DID NOT marry Peter Groomes.

She was married only once, that I have found, and she married late in life at age 38. She married about 1880 William Ricketts and to this union was born 3 children of which only one survived; a son, Joseph Quincy Adams ( 1882-1951)

In 1850 – Cameron and Jane are in Chesterfield, SC
1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield,  Chesterfield County, South Carolina, Roll: M432_851; Image: 360, Page 178A(stamped), Line 33, Dwelling 1224, Family 1224; Cameron ADAMS, male, age 39, Farmer, born in SC; Jane ADAMS, female, age 38, born in SC; John L. ADAMS, female, age 7, born in SC; Elizabeth A. ADAMS, female, age 5, born in SC; Andrew J. ADAMS, male, age 3, born in SC and Sarah J. ADAMS, female, age 1, born in SC.

In 1880 – William and Jane are in Chesterfield, SC
1880 CENSUS: Court House, Chesterfield, South Carolina; Roll: 1225; Enumeration District: 005, Page: 322B(stamped); Line 6, Dwelling 207, Family 207; William RICKETS, Male, age 30, born in NC and Mary Jane RICKETS, Wife, age 39, born in NC.

In 1900 – William and Mary Jane are in Gulledge, Anson County, NC
1900 CENSUS: Gulledge, Anson, North Carolina; Enumeration District: 0003; FHL microfilm: 1241181;  Page: 12; Line 48, Dwelling 198, Family 199; William RICKETS, Male, age 56, born unk 1844 in NC; Jane RICKETS, Wife, age 57, born unk 1843 in NC; married 20 years, 3 children, 1 living and John RICKETS, Son, age, 18, born unk 1882 in NC.

In 1910 – William and Mary Jane are in Gulledge, Anson County, NC
1910 CENSUS: Gulledge, Anson, North Carolina; Roll: T624_1096; Enumeration District: 0006; FHL microfilm: 1375109; Page: 10B/81(stamped); Line 75, Dwelling 180, Family 182; William RICKETS, Male, age 68, born in NC; Jane RICKETS, Wife, age 70, born in NC; married 30 years, 3 children, 1 living;  and John RICKETS, Son, age, 29, born in NC.

In 1920 – William and Mary Jane are in Gulledge, Anson County, NC
1920 CENSUS: Gulledge, Anson, North Carolina; Roll: T625_1283; Enumeration District: 6, Page: 2B/74)stamped); Line 72, Dwelling 32, Family 32; William RICKETS, Male, age 76, born in NC; Mary J. RICKETS, Wife, age 78, born in NC and John Q. RICKETS, Son, age, 39, born in NC.

On 30 January 1927 Mary Jane Adams Ricketts died of kidney failure and is buried the following day at New Hope Church, Anson County, NC. Her burial conflicts with a Cemetery Survey showing her burial to be in the Ricketts cemetery.  Her death certificate says she was born 3 Jan 1842 and was buried 31 January 1927 at New Hope Church Cemetery in Wadesboro, NC. I suspect the tombstone located in the Rickets cemetery is a later edition and is not from the time of her death in January 1927.

Peter Groomes may have married a Mary Jane Adams but she WAS NOT the DAUGHTER of Cameron Adams and Jane Copeland. She may well be the daughter of Thomas Cameron Adams and Elizabeth Gainey.

It’s Family Time~Who are the Parents of Sarah Hill Deese

My 2nd Great Grandparents are Samuel Deese and his wife Sarah Hill. This is proven with a paper trail and DNA testing. The marriage license of my Great Grandfather John Calvin Deese, clearly shows that Samuel and Sarah Hill Deese are his parents.

In addition, the 1850n census shows John Calvin's older brothers and sisters in the household of Samuel and Sarah Deese. John Calvin is not yet born. The Deese line is solidly documented for another 3 generations.

What's uncertain is the Hill line – Who are the parents of Sarah Hill wife of Samuel Deese.
The first documented child of Samuel and Sarah is a daughter Martha Deese, b. March 1831 in Anson County. This would suggest that Samuel and Sarah Hill were married about 1830.

Again the 1830 Census clearly shows that Samuel Dees was married in 1830 and had a young bride age 15-19.

Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19: 1 [wife- Sarah "Sally" Hill Deese, b. 1811-1815]

Based on 1830 thru the 1880 census in which Sarah (Hill) Deese appeared we can say that Sarah was born about 1815.

Samuel and Sarah had 9 known children; 4 daughters and 5 sons.
In 1820 Anson County census there we 3 HILL - Heads of Household listed:
  • Huldy Hill - Bennet, Anson, North Carolina - 6
  • Jonathan J Hill - Bennet, Anson, North Carolina - 3
  • John Hill - Bennet, Anson, North Carolina – 6
Huldah Hill
Huldy Hill is Huldah Jackson wife of John Hill, deceased. In her household is a female between the ages of 16-25. If this is Sarah Hill she has certainly dropped a few years off her age in subsequent Censuses.

Name: Huldy Hill
Home in 1820 (City, County, State):
Bennet, Anson, North Carolina
Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 3
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over: 1

Jonathan J. Hill
Name: Jonathan J Hill
Home in 1820 (City, County, State):
Bennet, Anson, North Carolina
Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - 16 thru 25: 1
Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1
The Jonathan J. Hill household contain a female of the correct age to be Sarah Hill if her age was reported correctly in the Censuses.

John Hill
Name: John Hill
Home in 1820 (City, County, State):
Bennet, Anson, North Carolina
Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 3
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44: 1
Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1

The John Hill household contains a female of the correct age to be Sarah Hill if her age was reported correctly in the Censuses.

Based on Census data John and Jonathan J. Hill are high probability to be the parents of Sarah Hill and Huldah Hill is a maybe.

Sarah (Hill) Deese is my 2nd Great Grandmother.
