It’s Family Time~Ellen F. Previtte

Ellen F. Previtte was born abt 1848 a daughter of William Previtte and his wife Catherina [LNU]. Ellen can be found in her parents home in the 1850 and 1860 Census. In 1860, she is 12 years of age and her parents are believed to have died in the early 1860’s. She was also listed in the home of her brother John Washington Previtte and his wife Elizabeth “Bette”Davis.

Ellen became elusive after the 1860 Census and was not found again until the 1900 unless the E. Previtte, Female, age 28 is her in this 1870 Census. This doesn’t match her said birth year of 1848. If she was born in 1848 she would be 22 years old not twenty-eight.

the 1900 Census was a SHOCKER. Not only did Ellen F. Previtte reappear but she was found living with a daughter Hattie E. Previtte born December 1873 and three grandchildren. No marriage record has been found for Ellen F. or her daughter Hattie E. before this 1900 Census; but that is about to change. Both women lists themselves as SINGLE in the 1900 Census.

On 21 October 1903, Hattie E. Previtte and Gilliam Philmore Carpenter, Sr. were married in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina. Gilliam Philmore Carpenter was a married man; he had married Sarah Catherine Gaddy and had two sons. However, he and Sarah Catherine had recently divorced. He and wife Sallie Carpenter were divorced in 1898, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer issue of 3 Nov 1898.

MARRIED IN TEN MINUTES AFTER DIVORCED

Philmore Carpenter, of Gulledge township, procured license to marry Hattie Privette, also of Gulledge township, Tuesday. The license was issued by Register of Deeds Moore about ten minutes after a decree, divorcing Carpenter from a former wife, was signed by Judge Cook. Carpenter has been divorced from two wives. Wadesboro Messenger
He and wife Sallie Carpenter were divorced in 1898, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer issue of 3 Nov 1898.

He and wife Mattie Carpenter were divorced in 1903 and 10 minutes later he married Hattie Privette, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer article dated 6 Nov 1903.

In 1910, the first census in which Hattie and Philmore appear they have 4 additional CARPENTER children plus her 4 PREVITTE children. All the children are using the Surname CARPENTER; the PREVITT children having dropped their PREVITT surname.

Hattie, we presumed has informed the Census taker that she has been married 7 years, has 8 children of which 7 are living. Those children in the 1910 household are:

Mary M. CARPENTER [PREVITT], Step-Daughter, age 17, born in NC; Eligah CARPENTER [PREVITT], Step-Son, age 14, born in NC; Bennie CARPENTER, Son, age 5, born in NC; David CARPENTER, Son, age 3, born in NC; Robert CARPENTER, Son, age 2, born in NC and Lester CARPENTER, Son, age 4/12, born in NC.

Not listed but named elsewhere are:

  1. James Douglas PREVITT, b. April 1888
  2. I. T. PREVITT, b. October 1898 [WWI Draft Reg. Card/].

In October 1903 while applying for a marriage License Hattie Previtt stated that both her father and Mother were deceased. The marriage licensee narrows down the time period for the death of Ellen F. Previtte, she was alive on 14 June 1900 (1900 Census) and died before 21 Oct 1903 (Marriage of Hattie to Philmore Carpenter).

Ellen F. Previtte died between 14 June 1900 (1900 Census) and 21 Oct 1903 (Marriage of Hattie to Philmore Carpenter). Her exact death date has not been found. No grave site has been found.

Ellen F. Previtte is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

Vital Records Can Be Wrong...Especially Death Certificates

Family Historian and Genealogists put a lot of faith into Vital records. But, every Genealogists I know  ensure that an exhaustive search has been made and if possible the data they find is not limited to one single document. Multiple sources are searched to ensure the data, when presented, is accurate.

Case in point is Georgia Death Certificate #28075 for Frederick Francis Rivers. This single document contains multiple errors. On line 16a the informant looks to be L. E. Rivers. I have no knowledge who L. E. Rivers is!

The Georgia Death Certificate shows Frederick middle name to be Frederick Francis Rivers. A majority of documents show his middle name to be Franklin. The Rivers family community accepts the fact the Frederick was named Frederick Franklin a long standing name within the Rivers family. However, the Delayed Birth certificate for his daughter, Mary Louise, b. 8 July 1898, shows her Father name to be Fredrick Francis Rivers.

Mr. F. F. Rivers and Mary Eugenia “Jennie” Bennett were married on 18 December 1894 at the Brides Mother’s home in Ansonville, NC by a Baptist Minister named John P. Boyd.

The parents of Frederick Franklin Rivers ARE NOT C. Lemuel Rivers and Mary Elizabeth Davis.

The parents of Frederick Franklin Rivers ARE Calvin Rivers and Louise Gatewood. We can see Frederick AKA Freddy as a 13 year old teenager in the Calvin and Lou Rivers household in 1880 Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

The ONLY C. Lemuel or Lemuel C. Rivers is Lemuel Clyde Rivers who married Mary Eva Tucker plus he was born in 1908 about 43 years AFTER Frederick Franklin Rivers.

It's important to ensure that a reasonably exhaustive search has been made and that each fact has a complete, accurate source citation.

Frederick Franklin Rivers is my 2nd Cousin 4X removed.

Who are the Parents of Hezekiah "Hugh" Brock?

One of my greatest genealogical disappointments is that I have not been able to determine the parents of my maternal 2nd Great Grandfather, Hezekiah "Hugh" Brock.

We know that the Chesterfield County Brock's are all descendants of Valentine Brack and his two wives Anna Margaretha Lischer and  Susanna Blaester.

One of those children was a James Brock born 13 September 1749 and died 15 Dec 1847. His full name might have been James Valentine Brock. His wife is unknown,

In 1790, THERE WERE NO BROCK's in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. The immigrant Valentine Brock was found in the Fayette District of Richmond County, North Carolina just across the state line with South Carolina and Chesterfield County.

1790 CENSUS: Fayette District, Richmond County, NC, Series: M637  Roll: 7,  Image: 442; Family History Library Film: 0568147. Page: 173, Line 2; 1 Male Over 16 [Valentine BROCK] and 2 Females,[ Wife and daughter].

In 1800 CENSUS, that had changed and we find

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • Susanna Brock

The numbers changed again in 1810 CENSUS and at that time we find:

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • William Brock [Moved to LA & MS]

The 1820 Census consisted of the following Brock families:

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • Benjamin Brock
      • It's easy to see with a matrix that the Valentine and James Brock family has been consistent over the past years just aging  another 10 years with the taking of each Census. It also easy to see that Benjamin Brock, age 26-45 in 1820 came from the James Brock family.

And finally the 1830 Census:

    • Valentine Brock is no longer listed
    • James Brock is same James we have followed from 1800 till now
    • Benjamin is the same Benjamin Brock from 1820
    • Squire Brock
    • Samuel Brock
      • Squire and Samuel are new families and again from the matrix included below the only family with boys this age is the James Brock family.

Hezekiah Brock was born 28 February 1827 in Chesterfield County. Right away we can eliminate Valentine, James Brock  and William Brock as the father of Hezekiah. That leaves as potential father, Benjamin, Squire and Samuel.

Let's take a look at these 3 families and see if we can place Hezekiah with one of the families.

First: Squire H. Brock
In the 1830 census Squire H. Brock family composition was:
1830‭ ‬Chesterfield,SC:
Squire BROCK
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬20-30‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬15-20‭;
‭We can see that Squire and his wife Rachel Parker only had two children, a daughter the oldest, Mary A. Brock and a son younger, James Albert Brock.
‭Many on-line trees have Hezekiah with this family because they think the middle H in Squire's name is Hezekiah. There is no proof found that shows what the "H" represents.

Second: Samuel Brock
In the 1830 census Samuel Brock family composition was:
1830‭ ‬Chesterfield, SC:
Samuel BROCK
2‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬30-40‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬5-10‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬20-30
Samuel W. Brock, b. 1796 and his wife Martha/Marcia had two young sons and a daughter in this Census. The sons are of the proper age that one may have been Hezekiah; but, when we research the family we find that those two young sons are William P. Brock, Joel Washington Brock and the daughter is  Sarah Ann Brock.

So that leaves Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance. The 1830 Census shows the Benjamin Brock family as follows:

1830 Census
Benjamin BROCK
2‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
3‭ ‬male,‭ ‬5-10‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬40-50‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬40-50‭;
‭We see that Benjamin and his wife Temperance had 5 males borne before 1830 and two borne in the proper time slot for one of these boys to be Hezekiah and I say Hezekiah is the son of Benjamin and Temperance [LNU] Brock.

Many years ago, I was given some information suggesting the Hezekiah and an older brother had married sisters. I haven't totally proven or unproven this information; but,  Hezekiah Brock, my 2nd Great Grandfather married Sarah "Sallie" Morris; his oldest brother, Alsey Brock married Lucy Morris. Lucy Morris and Sarah Morris were sisters and daughters of Wiley Morris and Charity Short.

The mass destruction of pre Civil war public records and the deliberate acts of arson in the burning of the County Courthouse by the Union forces in early March 1865 is extremely distressing.

However, the remaining records and evidence including family folklore all points to one conclusion: Hezekiah Brock is the son of Benjamin Brock and Temperance, his wife. I just wish for one document supporting this conclusion.

It’s Family Time~Alsey Brock

Alsey Brock was a young boy, 9 years 8 months old, when the Union Army captured his father,  Hezekiah Brock, on his farm and made him a prisoner-of-war on 12 March 1865.  When his father died in prison on 12 June 1865, after the war had ended months earlier Alsey was still a lad of nine years. Alsey has 3 older brothers and 2 younger brothers.

Hezekiah’s death in prison left his wife Sarah “Sallie’ Morris Brock a widow with six young boys all under the age of 15 to raise alone. Sarah Morris Brock never remarried and she raised her six boys to be fine young men in their community.

All the boys, with the exception of Alsey, married and raised families of their own. Alsey Brock never married. Sarah can be found as Head of Household, after the war, in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Alsey is enumerated in the household with his mother along with others children.

In 1900, Sarah,  at the age of 71, can be found in the home of her son, Alsey Brock, age 44. Her son Pleasant Brock is living in the next household.

Sarah “Sallie Morris Brock, mother of six boys, died 21 October 1902. At the time of her death, Sarah “Sallie” Morris Brock owned 39 1/2 acres of land conveyed to her by Jas. O. Edwards by Deed bearing date of December the 19th 1876. That land was conveyed by her sons to their brother Alsey Brock on 30 October 1902.

Hezekiah Brock final resting place is a “Mass” grave at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. Sarah “Sallie” Morris Brock’s final resting place is unknown. No tombstone has been found marking her resting place. Her death date was recorded in a “Martin Family” Bible.

The last known record of Alsey Brock, a bachelor and lifelong farmer in Chesterfield County, is the 1910 Chesterfield County Census. Alsey Brock died after 27 April 1910, the date this census was taken.

If anyone reading this post has any information on the death of Alsey Brock I would like to hear from you.

Surely, someone in the extended Brock families living in Chesterfield County and elsewhere have some information or family folklore about Alsey’s death sometime between 1910 and 1920.

Alsey Brock is my Great Grand Uncle.

Suit to Partition Estate Lands of Squire H. Brock

On 10 February 1888, Squire H. Brock passed away. His wife Rachel had passed away some 8 1/2 months earlier on 25 May 1887. Squire left 8 grown children to mourn his passing and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a farmer and land owner.

On 5 April 1897, ten years after his passing, his son, Samuel W. Brock brought suit in the Court of Common Pleas in the County of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina against James A. Brock et al praying that the real estate of Squire H. Brock deceased be sold for Partition. James Albert Brock was the oldest surviving son. The land (85 acres) was sold to Samuel W. Brock for $51.50.

But, what happened to the money? No probate record or any other equity record of any kind has been found detailing what happened to the proceeds of the Squire H. Brock partition. That includes all the personal and real property belonging to the estate. Chesterfield County Land Deed Book 15, pages 174-177 documents the selling of the land but it doesn't show what happened to the money.  The Land Deed is 4 pages but for the sake of brevity I have only included page 174 of Deed Book 15. It’s Family Time~John Davis Perkins, Sr. Family

John Davis Perkins, Sr. was born on 6 Mar 1874 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

He was the son of James Franklin Perkins and Margaret Emeline “Aunt Mag” Davis. After leaving Chesterfield, John appears in the 1920 Census, Douglas, Coffee, Georgia and the 1930 Census, Lineville, Clay, Alabama. In 1940, I could not locate John Davis. His wife and two children were living in the household of her Mother. John’s tombstone shows he died on 8 May 1941 at the age of 67. Where he was in 1940 when the census was taken is unknown. There was no death certificate found in the Georgia Death Index.

John Davis Perkins Sr and Lillian C. Hilliard were married on 9 Oct 1921 in Glynn, Georgia. Lillian C. Hilliard, daughter of Hiram Hilliard and Maude Gertrude Arnold, was born on 21 Nov 1906. She died on 13 Oct 1987 at the age of 80 in Alachua, Florida.

Obituary Monday~William Calhoun Brock

Back in September 2018, I wrote about the Guardianship of William Calhoun Brock. William Calhoun was born in August 1863, a son of Stephen Brock and Nancy Smith. First, his Father died 11 September 1867 when William was a mere 4 years of age. Then at age 15, his Mother, Nancy Smith Brock passed away. His big brother, Irvin Samuel, applied to the Courts and was granted guardianship of William Calhoun Brock. You can read about it here:

https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2018/09/treasure-chest-thursdaypetition-for.html

By 1894, William Calhoun had left Chesterfield striking out on his own. On 13 November 1894, William  married Lula McGrath in Norfolk, Virginia. I think it safe to assume he arrived in Norfolk much earlier than November 1894 where he met and developed a courtship with Lula McGrath sometime before that marriage date.

William and Lula raised a family of five children; four daughters and a son. William Calhoun died at the age of 57 on 5 December 1920.

Mrs. W. W. Coker of this city received a telegram Sunday [5 Dec.] advising her of the death of her Uncle, W. C. Brock of Norfolk, who was 54 year of age at time of his death.

It’s Family Time~Brock Lineage~Jasper S. Brock

This past week I found myself researching for additional information on the James Brock – Elizabeth Purvis lineage and their connection to my Brock line. There is no doubt, they are related, most likely as shown in the within lineage charts. But I must add a caveat here: The first two generations lack the detail proof needed to say beyond reasonable doubt that this is the correct lineage. The James Brock line is proven up to and including James Brock. My Line is proven and documented to my 2nd Great Grandfather Hezekiah “Hugh” Brock.

Jasper Sargent Brock was borne 18 September 1881 in Brockdale, Washington Parish, Louisiana. His parents were Dr. James Monroe Brock and Armentha Martina Holmes. His great grand father James Brock and Great Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Purvis left Chesterfield County, SC about 1818-1819 and migrated to Alabama and Mississippi.

Jasper Sargent Brock, age 21, married Beulah Baylis, age 15, on 10 January 1903 in Brookhaven, Lincoln County, Mississippi. To this union were born the following children:

i.    Jane Brock, born 25 May 1904, Louisiana; married Lawrence John Dumestre, Jul 1923, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana; died 20 Jan 1983, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.
ii.    James Monroe "Jimmie" Brock was born 21 Oct. 1905 in Washington Parish, Louisiana.

iii.    Mildred Brock, born 22 Feb 1906, Washington Parish, Louisiana; married Robie Robicheaux, abt 1934, New Orleans, LA; died 19 Dec 1996, Hammond, Tangipahoa, Louisiana.
iv.    Jasper Sargent Brock Jr. was born in 1910 in Washington Parish, Louisiana. He died on 16 Jul 1935 at the age of 25 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.

v.    Margaret Brock, born 4 Apr 1912; married Alton P. George, New Orleans, LA; died 15 Dec 1997.

Beulah Baylis Brock died 8 Jul 1935. Jasper Sargent Brock remarried to a lady by the name of Ardys Nettles. Jasper Sargent Brock died 30 October 1958. Ardys Nettles Brock is named in his obituary as his widow which appeared in the “Enterprise-Journal, McComb, Mississippi, 31 Oct 1958, Fri., Page 12, column 5.

J. S. Dies Brock at 77; Rites Saturday
Funeral services will be held for Jasper S. Brock, 77, state banking commissioner of Louisiana for 31 years and brother to Dr. L. W. Brock of McComb, at 3 p. m. Saturday from Rabenhorst Funeral Home in Baton Rouge. Mr. Brock, a native of Mount Hermon, died at his Baton Rouge home at 5:30 p. m. Thursday after a lengthy illness... [Enterprise-Journal, McComb, Mississippi, 31 Oct 1958, Fri., Page 12, column 5.]

Also named within the obituary are 3 daughters and a step-mother, Fannie Brock, 2nd wife of Dr. James Monroe Brock.  The two sons above are not named validating why I haven’t found any information on James “Jimmie” M . Brock after 1920.

Jasper S. Brock is my 4th Cousin twice removed.

A 1801 Land Deed~Benj. Brock to Wm. Brooks & Richard Knight

I have added this Land deed to my collection of Brock deeds for various reasons. First after many years of research I have come to the conclusion that ALL Brocks in Chesterfield County, SC and Anson County, NC are descendants of Valentine Brock and his 2nd wife, Susanna Blaester. Thus this Benjamin Brock is one of my early Brock ancestors.

But who is this Benjamin Brock?. All of my Brock ancestors with this one exception lived in Chesterfield County, SC just across the NC/SC state line between Anson and Chesterfield County. We know from an earlier Anson County Land Deed that this Benjamin Brock married Catherine “Caty” Wright sometime before 18 January 1894. See Anson County Land Deed Book "E", Page 229 Benjamin Brock to John Wright Jr.

In the 1800 Census Benjamin Brock is age 26- 44 making his birth year to be between 1756-1774; Valentine Brock married Susanna Blaester on 11 November 1760 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It almost certain that this Benjamin Brock is a son of Valentine and Susanna Brock.

I can find no record of any children from this union. Nor can I find Benjamin or Catherine after 12 December 1827.

In this particular Land Deed Benjamin is selling off 300 acres of land adjoining other Land that he owns to William Brook and Richard Knight.

Obituary Tuesday~James H. Privett, Infant

On Monday, December 27th the death angel visited the home of Mr. & Mrs. W. A. Privett and took from them their baby, James, 4 months old. He had been ill for [a while] with pneumonia. His physician worked faithfully and did all in his power but to no avail. James will be missed much by his father, mother, sisters and brothers, but our Heavenly Father needed him most can truthfully say our loss is his gain. The child was laid to rest at Zoar Church Tuesday afternoon o’clock, conducted by Rev. W. P. Way, Pastor of Zoar Church. A Friend.

James H. Privett was borne 28 August 1926, a son of William Alfred Privett and Mary Belle “Mae” Sellers. At the time of his death, 27 December 1926, he had 3 older siblings.

James H. Privett was buried at Zoar UMC Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

It’s Family Time~The John M. Sellers Family

John M.* Sellers was born about 1825 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was one of the middle sons of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. John W. Sellers had 13 siblings; He had 8 brothers and 5 sisters.

About April 1850, John W. Sellers married a young lady, age 19, by the name of Mary. After years of research and having lived into the 1900's I still have not determined her maiden name.

Their first child, a son was born in 1854. There may have been a daughter Mary as shown in the 1880 Census  below and and Infant that arrived and did not survive in 1856.

On 18 December 1856, John W. Sellers and his sister Sarah Sellers executed a deed (DB 15:182 & 183) to John Pratt giving him title to approximately 165 acres land on the  East & North side Jones Creek to secure a loan of five hundred and sixty dollars.

John W. Sellers enlisted with Co. "B", 31st Regiment, Anson County, NC on 8 September 1863. His Regiment was known as the "O-KAY BOYS".  He died on 14 May 1864 at the age of 39 in Drewery's Bluff, Virginia. He was also known as John M. Sellers.

Mary his wife, born 7 July 1830 in Anson County, remained single and begin drawing a Civil War pension about 1885, She raised her son and daughter alone.

Mary died on 26 Dec 1905 at the age of 75 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina, United States. I have spent many hours searching for Mary's maiden name and death date.  I did find one minor clue that I feel certain is a report of her death. On page 206 of Emma Goodwin’s “TypeTalk of Lilesville Township Anson County, NC the following death notice appeared from the December 28, 1905 Newspaper.

“Mrs. Polly Sellers, 80, of Lilesville Township died at her home on Tuesday Night.”

The 28th of December 1905 was a Thursday; so Polly Sellers died on 26 December 1905.

John W. Sellers and Mary  had the following children:

        i.    William R. "Todd" Sellers, born 13 Feb 1854, Anson County, North Carolina; married Rosa Elizabeth Ratliff, 1880; died 20 May 1924, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
         ii.    Mary Sellers, born 1854, Anson County, North Carolina; married Lewis Jones.
         iii.    Infant Sellers was born in 1856 in Anson County, North Carolina.

*Note: Name appeared as John M and John W. Sellers.
