It’s Family Time~The Franklin Alexander Laton Family

Franklin Alexander Laton, born 13 August 1828, a son of John Laton. Sr. and his wife
Martha Ann Solomon. He was their 2nd born child. Franklin was a farmer and or farm laborer as most young men were at this time in history. By the start of the Civil War in January 1861, Franklin and Martha‘s family had grown to 5 children; 2 boys and 3 girls.  

On 1 September 1862, Franklin A. Laton enlisted into the Sixty-sixth Infantry (8th Battalion, Partisan Rangers} at Salisbury, North Carolina. While serving he was captured and held prisoner until his release on 28 June 1865 by General Order 109.

During the war and afterwards, Franklin and Martha had two additional daughters bringing their family total to seven children; 5 daughters and 2 sons.

Franklin Alexander Laton and Martha Ann Solomon had the following children:

i. Frankie Annie Laton, born 25 May 1848; married William J. Laton; died 15 Mar 1927.

ii. Mary Laton was born 16 Sept. 1850; died 20 Dec 1923, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina..

iii. Thomas Allen Laton, born 8 May 1855; died  2 Nov 1937, Albemarle, Stanly, North carolina. .

iv. Sophronia Cathern  Laton was born on 20 Feb 1858. She died on 28 Mar 1937 at the age of 79 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

v. John William Laton, born 11 May 1860, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina; married Martha Priscilla Morton, 12 Apr 1881, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 17 Jul 1952, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina.

vi. Martha H. Laton, born 8 Jun 1863; married Thomas Alexander Mauldin; died 8 Feb 1940.

vii. Etta Louisa Laton was born on 2 Jun 1866. She died on 10 Sep 1917 at the age of 51.

On 3 May 1889, Martha Jane Solomon Laton passed away.

On 23 July 1891, at age 62, Franklin Alexander Laton married  Zilpha Jane Thompson, daughter of Tom Thompson & Mary Smith. Their only child, Rosa, was born Christmas day, 1899.

Franklin Alexander Laton, age 77, died on 11 May 1906 and was buried in the Laton Cemetery, Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina.

Franklin Alexander Laton is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Who is the Mother of Leonidas Purvis, aka Leonidas Odom?

Leonidas Purvis was born in 1858, in Pennington, Trinity County, Texas. But who is his Mother. Based upon Census information his mother is either Nancy Jane Purvis Odom and Lucy/Lucie Purvis

In 1860, Lucy  and Nancy Jane are both listed in the household of John Odom and there is no Leonidas Purvis/Odom age 2 listed in the household.

1862- In April 1862, Lucy and Leonicis petition the Confederate Army for $8 due them for providing beef to the Army.  I don’t think this is her 4 year old son, Leonidas Purvis. 

Page 4 of the Civil War file shows a document that seem to Suggest the Leonicis is a Sr.  Is there a Leonicis Purvis, Sr., now deceased, that Lucy/Lucie is filing her petition on behalf of to obtain the $8 owed them by the Confederate Army.  

Is Lucy Purvis the sister of Nancy Jane Odom or is she the sister-in-law. If there is a Leonicis Purvis, Sr. why can’t he be located?

Leonidas, the child, is first enumerated in the 1870 Population Census for Trinity County, Texas in the Household of Mrs. Lucie Purvis, age 33 with his sister Martha, age 9. Leonidas PURVIS is listed as age 12.

Leonidas Purvis married Emma Johnson in 1877 and is still living in Trinity County, Texas. He is now using the surname Odom. Their only child, a daughter Emma is age 2.

Emma Johnson Odum died in 1883 leaving Leonidas a widow and Emma, the daughter, an orphan. Then on 5 January 1886, Leonidas Purvis-Odom passed away and the daughter Emma is placed under her Grandfather Robert Isaac Johnson care by the Courts.

There are many who say that Leonidas Purvis is the son of John Odom and Nancy Jane Purvis. I do not see any evidence of that nature in the documents available.  Even though no marriage license has been found I believe that the Civil War petition and 1870 Census clearly shows that Leonidas Purvis-Odom is the son of Lucy/Lucie Purvis.

It’s Family Time~Caroline L. Sides

Caroline Sides, born October 1833, was the 5th child of Daniel Sides and Esther Dry. The
family was a large family of twelve (12) known children. Caroline had an additional seven (7) siblings born after her birth in October 1833.  She had seven brothers and four sisters.

Caroline Sides never married. She lived with her parents until their death in the 1880’s. After their deaths she can be found in the home of her brother, Noah Sides.

Caroline Sides died on 21 May 1916 of angina valvular carditis (heart disease) and was buried in Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. 

No tombstone has been found for Caroline L. Sides. Her birth date, October 1833 and death date 21 May 1916 came from her North Carolina Death certificate.  The birth date on her NC Death certificate does not match with the 1900 Census which shows her birth as October 1832.

Caroline L. Sides is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Military Tuesday~Thomas Crosson Rivers, WWII Veteran

 

Thomas Crosson Rivers, son of James A. Rivers and Blanche Teal was born 8 October 1923. After 3 years of high school, Thomas Crossan Rivers enlisted into the Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina on 2 February 1943.  He was assigned to the 812 AAF BASE UNIT upon completion of basic training. 

World War II had been on-going since 1 September 1939; but, the United States did not enter the War until the bombing of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.

I don’t think Thomas Crosson lived long enough to see any combat action. At the time of his death, he was stationed at Pope Field, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Based on his South Carolina Death Certificate it looks as if Thomas was home on leave in February 1945 when he lost his life in an automobile accident on the 18th day of February 1945. 

Thomas Crosson Rivers was laid to rest in Shiloh Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

The 2nd Marriage of Barbara Lipe

Barbara Lipe was born 16 November 1795 in Montgomery County, NC, a daughter of Leonard Lipe and his wife Barbara Wentz. At age 19, she married Daniel Dry, son of Owen Ulrich and Eve Dry Dry, on 21 March 1815, in Montgomery County, North Carolina.

Shortly after their marriage they re-located to Perry County, Illinois. There they raised a family of eight children; six sons and 2 daughters. On 9 March 1836, at age 40, Daniel Dry passed away leaving Barbara a widow with children ranging in age from 3 years to 21 years of age. Seven of these children were under the age of 21; only the oldest had reached the age of majority.

On 19 January 1841, Barbara (Lipe) Dry married David H. Mead, a Merchant, in Perry County, Illinois.

No children have been identified from this marriage. In the 1850 and 1860 Census, David and Barbara are living in separate households. Barbara is with her son Daniel W. Dry and his family in 1850 Census and in the Household of Simon Pyle in the 1860 Census. Simon Pyle is her grandson, a son of her daughter Catherine Dry Pyle.  This separation doesn’t represents a healthy marriage.

Davis H. Mead served as a Private with Company D, 31st Illinois. His FindAGrave Memorial shows that he died in 1865; but,  this date is not validated with a tombstone shown on his grave.  No source for this date has been documented and no VERIFIED Death Date has been found. Another reason to give pause on his death is that his FindAGrave memorial says he is buried in Nine Mile Cemetery, Sunfield, Perry County, Illinois. Official Illinois Records says he is buried in the I.O.O.F Cemetery.

Barbara (Lipe) Dry Mead passed away in February 1880; Cause of Death: Apoplexy. Her death is documented in the 1880 Mortality Census.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth McRae Brock of Clio Passes

Benjamin Franklin Brock and Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” McRae were married 27 February 1879 in Barbour County, Alabama. Benjamin Franklin, born 22 Aug 1855 was the son of James Brock and Martha Jane Teal;  Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” McRae, born Nov 1855 was the daughter of John C. McRae. 

Benjamin Franklin Brock, age 71, pioneer citizen of Barbour County, passed away in a local hospital on the night of 11 March 1927. The mother of his children, Mrs. Mollie Brock died on 21 January 1932.

MRS. MOLLIE BROCK OF CLIO, PASSES AWAY 
Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church for Mrs. Mollie Brock, a respected and much beloved citizen living near Clio. The last rites were conducted by the Rev. Young, of Troy. Mrs. Brock was born October 25, 1855, and was 77  years old. She was the daughter of John C. McRae, being among the first settlers of Montgomery, and he was chief of police of that city during the civil war period. Mrs. Brock witnessed the inauguration of Jefferson Davis. She was among the first women employed in the commercial world of the South, being employed at type-setter by the Montgomery Advertiser at the age of fifteen years. Mrs. Brock leaves to mourn her death one sister, Mrs. Bettie Sheehan, of Montgomery, and the following children: Fred and John Brock and Mrs. Homer Owens, of Clio; Grady Brock, of Brundidge; Mrs. Jack Davis, Dawson, Ga.; Mrs. Allen Dickerson, of Hatcher Station, Ga.; 17 grand children and one great grand child. The remains were laid to rest at Pea River cemetery with Jackson and Hasten of Brundidge in charge.

It’s Family Time~Noah Sides, Single Farmer

 Noah Sides was the 2nd born son and child of Daniel Sides and Esther Dry. He had
eleven siblings; 6 brothers and five sisters. Noah was a single man his entire life. When he wrote his Will on 16 Jan 1904 in Iredell county, his entire Estate was left to brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and grand nephews. You can read his WILL here:

Noah’s exact date of birth is Unknown. His FindAGrave Memorial shows his birth as Jan 1826  but, this in in conflict was the only other published date of March 1826 which can be found in the 1900 Census for Iredell County, North Carolina. The 1850 through 1910 has these dates published.

His death date on the FindAGrave Memorial shows he died 26 February 1911. This date matches his obituary published in The Statesville Sentinel, Statesville, North Carolina, 02 Mar 1911, Thu., Page 3, Column 1. The Sunday before 2 March in 1911 was 26 February 1911.

Obituary for Noah Sides

Mr. Noah Sides, of Concord township, died last Sunday morning [26 Feb] at the old Sides homestead, death resulting from old age. He was buried at Concord church Monday. He was never married and is survived by two brothers and three sisters.

His  surviving siblings were:

1. Caroline Lydia Sides was born in Oct 1833 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 21 May 1916 at the age of 82 in Coward, Iredell, North Carolina. She was buried on 22 May 1916 at Concord Church.

2. Sarah Elvina "Sallie" Sides was born in Aug 1840 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 5 March 1922 at the age of 81 in Concord, Iredell, North Carolina.

3. Margaret Selena "Lena" Sides was born in Jun 1845 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 28 Sep 1927 at the age of 82 in Concord, Iredell, North Carolina. She was buried on 29 Sep 1927 in Concord, Iredell, North Carolina.

4. Archibald A. Sides was born in Aug 1842 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He died on 3 Jun 1929 at the age of 86 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was buried on 3 Jun 1929 at Concord Cemetery in Iredell County, North Carolina.

5. James M. Sides was born on 7 Feb 1848 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He died on 18 Mar 1919 at the age of 71 in Statesville, Iredell, North Carolina.

No tombstone has been found for Noah Sides. He was buried at the Concord Church Cemetery per above obituary/death notice.

Noah Sides is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.

Hugh, aka “Robby”, enlisted in the Army on April 20, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He served as the Navigator on B-26G #43-34201, 1st Pathfinder Squadron, 387th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Lt. Hugh W. Robbins Killed in Crash

Chesterfield, March 9-- First Lt. Hugh W. Robbins, navigator of a B-26 Marauder, was killed in action, January 22, when his aircraft crash-landed as a result of Engine failure on retuning  from a combat mission, according to word received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Calvin L. Robbins. Besides his parents, who live in Baltimore, Md., he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Robbins of Cheraw.
Lieutenant Robbins was the holder of two stars for his campaign ribbon, the Air Medal with Six Oak Leaf clusters and a Presidential Unit Citation.

First Lt. Hugh Wesly Robbins, Navigator, is buried in the Cedar Bluff Cemetery, adjoining the Episcopal Cemetery, Plot 293, Grave 3, Annapolis, Maryland

That he entered the service of the United States under the officers named & served as stated in the following account. That he was drafted a short time before Christmas in the year __ & served as a Private under Captain Morris Murphy [Maurice Murphy] & Maj. Robert Lloyd [sic, Robert Lide], that he does not recollect the Regiment to which he belonged;1 that he was marched to a place called the "Long Bluff” on Pee Dee River [Pedee River] in the State aforesaid from there to Sewee Bay from there to Haderal's Point [sic, Haddrell's Point] & from there to James Island near Charleston from which place he returned home having served in this tour nine weeks. That he was again drafted & marched as a private under Capt. John DeWitt [John Dewitt] & Col. George Hicks to Cheraw in the District & State aforesaid where he remained one month & returned home. That he was again drafted as a private & then on this 8th day of February (year not recollected) he marched under Capt. Ellerbe [sic, Thomas Ellerbee] & Col. George Hicks crossed Black River at Benbows [sic, Benbow's Ferry?] & crossed Santee [River] at Lanud Ferry [sic, Lenud's Ferry] & proceeded to Charleston - that he was in Charleston at the time it was taken by the British under Clinton where he was taken prisoner on the 11th day of May after his March & was discharged on parole on the 19 of the same month having served this tour up to this time he was taken prisoner three months & four days.2 That he served two tours, of two weeks each, as one of a scouting party. That he was again drafted & marched as a private under Capt. William Preswood [sic, William Prestwood] to McCord's Ferry on the Congaree River in the State aforesaid where Col. Washington [William Washington] took command - That he returned home from McCord's Ferry having served this tour one month & remained at home two months. That he was drafted again & served as a private under Capt. Benton & Maj. Tristram Thomas for one month. That he never received a discharge. He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. Sworn to in open Court the day & year above written.

except a Guardian who shall claim for an Orphan Child, and except Persons absent in the Service of this State, or the United States, before he shall enter a Claim for any of the Lands aforesaid, shall take and subscribe the Oath, or Affirmation, of Allegiance and Abjuration, prescribed by the Law of this State, which Oath the Entry Officer is hereby impowered and required to administer; and every Person claiming shall also, before he shall be entitled to enter a Claim for any of said Lands, pay into the Hands of the Entry Taker at the Rate of Two Pounds Ten Shillings for every Hundred Acres, together with the Fees, which shall be by this Act made lawful. The YB above is a source reference. Page 74 shows Key to Sources. YB says "Charleston, S.C., YEARBOOK OF THE CITY OF CHARLESTON (Charleston, 1897), pp. 401-408, Gen. Benjamin Lincoln Papers in Thomas Addis Emmet Collection, New York Public Library, including petitions from the country militia at Charleston in May 1780 urging the surrender of the city." PI is the Daughters of American Revolution, PATRIOT INDEX, and AA-6452 is South Carolina Archives; Revolutionary War Audited Accounts.

Enlisted in Marion's Brigade, Benton's Regiment in 1782 at Cheraw (Revolutionary War). Surrender at Charleston and held prisoner for a while. Frederick Rivers Sr. was born near Chesterfield SC and was a farmer. He received grants of land 1784 -1787 for 200, 1000, and 227 acres lying on Abrams Creek. He enlisted (1782) in Cheraw SC in Marion's Brigade, Benton's Regiment. He may have seen action at Black Creek, the ferry on Georgetown/Cheraw Road, and Society Hill. He was held prisoner by the British in Charleston at the end of the war. [History of the Old Cheraws, page 412]

[Note] I need a document proving that Hulda Rivers, b. 13 October 1816 is the daughter of William Rivers and his wife Elizabeth “Betsy” Rivers to get Frederick Rivers accepted as my Revolutionary War Patriot. Any help greatly appreciated.
