The Rev. Charles Betts Family

Charles Betts was born abt 1800 in Brunswick, North Carolina. At age 16, he
experienced conversion into the Methodist faith becoming a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

In 1818, he entered the traveling ministry while attending a General Conference in Augusta, Georgia.

He rapidly became a prominent figure at the General Conferences.

At age 33, he married Ann Davis Godfrey, my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed. Ann Davis Godfrey was born 1802, a daughter of Maj. Richard Godfrey and Rachel Davis.

To this union were born three known children; two daughters and a son. Sadly, the son died at an early age most likely before 1860 since he only appears in the 1850 Census for St. Michael and St Phillip, Charleston, South Carolina.

Harry Alexander Davis in his book “The Davis family (Davies and David) in Wales and America: Genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania – January 1, 1927 had this to say about Ann Davis Godfrey.

“Ann Davis Godfrey: b 6 Apr. 1802, m Rev. Charles Betts, she died 1839-40; left 2 daughters”

We now know she did not pass away in 1839-1840 because she is with her husband and 3 children in the 1850 Census for Charleston County, SC.

But, when the 1860 CENSUS were enumerated we find that Ann Davis (Godfrey) Betts has passed away and the Rev. Charles Betts has remarried. His second was Esther Ann Gibson. No actual marriage notice or certificate has been found for either of his two marriages.

His first wife Ann Davis Godfrey died sometime after 1850 Census was enumerated  and his 2nd marriage took place sometime before 1860 Census enumeration.

Rev. Charles Betts died on 16 April 1872 at the home of his son-in-law Dr. Edward Brown Smith, husband of his daughter, Martha Gibson Betts in Marion County, South Carolina.

Rev'd Charles Betts

Esther Ann Gibson(?) second wife of Rev. Charles Betts passed away sometime after the 1880 Census enumeration on 3 June 1880.

The tombstone of Rev. Charles Betts can be found in the Old Town Cemetery, Marion, Marion County, South Carolina. No tombstones has been found for either spouse.

It’s Family Time~The John B. Rivers Family

John B. Rivers is a recurring name in early Rivers families. Today's post is about John B. Rivers, born about 1812 in Chesterfield County South Carolina.

John B. Rivers was the son of William Rivers and Elizabeth “Betsy” Rivers. He was a farmer.

John B. Rivers married Eliza Rivers about 1832. Eliza Rivers was a daughter of Frederick F. Rivers, Jr. and Sarah “Siddie” Boatwright. They raised a large family of 11 known children. They had eight (8) sons. Five of the eight sons died in the Civil War.

The following sons died in the Civil War.

1. William Rivers, b. 1831; died 15 July 1864, Adams Rin Charleston, SC

2. Louis B. Rivers, b. 1839; died 13 July 1863

3. James Rivers, b. 1841; died 8161-1865

4.  John S. Rivers, b. 1842; died Civil War

5. Andrew “Drew” Rivers, b. 1844; died 8 May 1865, Pt Lookout, Md.

The Children of John B. Rivers and Eliza Rivers were:

i. William Rivers, born 1831, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mary Ann Graves, abt 1859, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 15 Jul 1864, Civil War.

ii. William Frederick Rivers Sr., born 3 Jul 1837, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Lucy Jane Odom, abt 1865, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 12 Mar 1894, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

iii. Louis B. Rivers was born in 1839 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 13 Jul 1863 at the age of 24 in Adams Run, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA.

iv. James Rivers was born in 1841 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died in in Civil War.

v. John S. Rivers was born in 1842 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died about 1864 at the age of 22 in Civil War.

vi. Andrew "Drew" Rivers was born about 1844 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 8 May 1865 at the age of 21 in Pt. Lookout, Maryland.

vii. Doctor Wesley "Doctor W" Rivers, born 15 Jun 1847, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mary Eliza Davis, abt 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 2 Apr 1926, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

viii. Siddie Rivers was born in 1850 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died in 1857 at the age of 7 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ix. Alfred L. Rivers, born 1852, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Isabella Eddins, 18 Mar 1877, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 24 Dec 1911, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

x. Nancy A. Rivers was born in 1854 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died about 1870 at the age of 16.

xi. Eliza Rivers was born in 1857 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Last found in 1860 Census, age 3.

John B. Rivers died unexpectedly in June 1859 of Typhoid fever leaving his wife and eleven children's ranging in ago from two to twenty eight. John B. Rivers death is recorded in the Mark Rivers Family Bible and the 1860 Mortality Schedule, page 7.

The death of Eliza Rivers, the surviving spouse, is not as clear as the death of her husband John B. Rivers. We know that she died sometime after 1870 leaving her younger children as orphans. A land deed ibn Chesterfield County (DB 5 , page 798 From Thomas J. Rivers   to Frederick Rivers Alfred Rivers, D. W. Rivers Deed [William Rivers (Killed in War) (Written in)] has this to say:

Thomas J. Rivers to Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers, D. W. Rivers Deed
The State of Texas}
Grayson County}
Know all men by these presents, that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County of Chesterfield in the State of South Carolina

Thomas J Rivers is the son of William Rivers (Killed in CIVIL WAR) who was the son of John B. Rivers and Eliza Rivers.  So Thomas J. Rivers is the Grandson of Eliza Rivers as stated in the land deed. But, here’s the conundrum!

Thomas J. Rivers paternal Grandparents were John B. Rivers and Eliza Rivers

Thomas J. Rivers maternal Grandparents were Thomas J. Graves and Eliza “Mollie” Rivers.

So, which Grandmother is he referring too when he says: that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County…

After much research we know that on 2 February 1880 when Land Deed 5, page 798 was executed that Thomas J. Rivers was referring to his paternal Grandmother Eliza. His maternal Grandmother Eliza did not pass away until 29 October 1898 (see Find A Grave Memorial#146202521).

We also know from Land Deed 3, page 500 that Eliza Rivers, widow of John B. Rivers, was alive on the 25th day of January  1871.

Eliza Rivers & Others to John Privett  Deed

State of South Carolina}
Chesterfield County}
Know all men by these present that we Eliza Rivers, Frederick Rivers, Doc Rivers, Alfred Rivers and Nancy Rivers of the County of Chesterfield…

Eliza (Rivers) Rivers died after 25 January 1871 (DB 3:500 and before 2 February 1880 (DB 5:789).

No tombstone's have been found for either parents.

It's Family Time~The Mysterious Joel S. Toler Family (Revisited)

Joel S. Toler, age unknown, served with Company A, 29th Regiment Alabama.
We know he survived the Civil War because on 30 September 1869 he married Alice Catherine Johns in Bullock County, Alabama. After his marriage on this date both he and his wife, Alice Catherine Johns are a complete mystery. No record of the couple has been found after their marriage on 30 September 1869 in Bullock County, Alabama.

I do know that between 5 April 1874 (Birth of their Son and last known child) and 3 June 1880 (1880 Census Enumeration) that Joel and Alice had two children, a daughter and a son and that something catastrophic happen to them and other family members.

In researching this family I found them in the 1860 census living in Seals Station, Russell County, Alabama.

1860 CENSUS: Southern Division, Seals Station, Russell County, Alabama Roll: M653_22; Page: 893; Image: 499; Family History Library Film: 803022; Line 7, Dwelling 238, Family 227; Shadrick JOHNS, 60, Male, Day Laborer, born in SC; Mary JOHNS, 44, Female, House Keeper, born in SC; Alice C. JOHNS, 16, Female, House Keeper, born in SC; Thomas H. JOHNS, 14, Male, born in SC; Henry J. JOHNS, 11, male, born in SC and Anna W. JOHNS, 6, female, born in SC.

The following family member executed 2 lands deed in Chesterfield County SC on 3 Dec 1866. The members were, Shadrick/Shadrach Johns, Mary (Boan) Johns, Alice Catherine Johns, Joseph Henry Johns and Anna W. Johns.  Missing from the two land deeds is their son, Thomas H. Johns. DB 5, pages 598 & 599 and DB 6, page 177.

Shadrach Johns, age 80, was found in Marlboro County, 1880 Census with his son and two surviving Toler grandchildren.

1880 CENSUS: Hebron Twsp., Marlboro County, South Carolina; T9_Roll: 1235; Family History Film: 1255235; Page: 460A; Enumeration District: 108; . Film #0448724, Soundex for 1880 SC Census, Film #1255235, Line 22, Dwelling # 43, Family #43. Shade JOHN, age 80, Shingle Getter, born in SC; Joseph JOHN, son, age 31, May TOLAR, grand daughter, age 10, born in SC and William TOLAR, grand son, age 7, born in SC. Film located LDS FHL, SLC, UT.

My 2nd Great Grandfather Shadrach Johns returned home to Marlboro County, SC without his wife, two daughters, a son and a son-in-law. What happened to the following family members?

  • His wife – Mary (Boan) Johns, b. 1815
  • His daughter Alice Catherine Johns Toler, b. 1844
  • His son-in-law Joel S. Toler, age unknown
  • His son Thomas H. Johns, b. 1847
  • His daughter Anna W. Johns, b. 1854

After many years of research, I haven’t found any evidence related to the missing members of this family.

I know they were in Seals Station, Russell County , Alabama in 1860 till at least 5 April 1874 when William Shadrac Toler was born.

I know in December 1866 they were all in Chesterfield county except son Thomas H. Johns (he may have died in the Civil War).

I know that in Dec 1866, Shadrach & Mary Johns were living in Washington County, Florida.

The What, When and Where of this devastated family is still unknown. I’m open to all suggestions.

Shadrach Johns and Mary Boan are my 2nd Great-grandparents.

 So. Carolina

I do hereby certify for MARY GRAVES (Heiress of Stephen Copeland) of Land Containing Two Hundred Acres (surv’ed for her the 9th August 1788) Situate on the District of Cheraw on the No. side of Thompsons—Creek on a branch of Cedar Creek and hath such form, marks, cuttings and boundings as the above Plat Represents.

Alex Craig

Dep. Surv.

On 9 August 1788, 200 acres of land was surveyed for Mary Graves along the upper border of Chesterfield adjacent to the North Carolina State Line. My reading of the land plat shows that she was an heiress of Stephen Copeland.

I have several unanswered questions:

Do any of you know why she was awarded this land?

As heiress of Stephen Copeland, was she his daughter or related otherwise?

Anyone know who her Graves husband was?

It’s Family Time~The William and Gilly (Eddins) Sellers

William and Gilly (Eddins) Sellers are my 3rd Great Grandparents on my maternal side of the family.

William Sellers was born about 1790 a son of Phillip Sellers and Mary Gulledge. Gilly Eddins was born between 1781 and 1790, a daughter of William Eddins and his wife Nancy whose last name is unknown.

William Sellers and Gilly Eddins were married about 1818. This is is based on the birth of their first born, Noah Sellers, born 2 September 1819. Only three known children have been identified for this couple but its highly likely there are others who remain unidentified.

The known children of William and Gilly Sellers are:

i. Noah Sellers, born 2 Sep 1819, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Timmey Ellen Parsons, aft May 1840; died abt 1894, Madison Co., Tennessee.

ii. William Eddins Sellers, born abt 1820, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Elizabeth Parsons, abt 1840; died abt 1854, Madison Co., Tennessee.

iii. Sarah Sellers, born abt 1838, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John H. Eddins, bef 1860; died aft 1880, Cason Old Field, Anson, North Carolina.

William Sellers was a farmer. His Father-in-Law, William Eddins, husband of Nancy and Mary, was a big land owner and at his death in 1822 there was a big lawsuit between the children and the 2nd wife over the division of the land. All 9 children of William and Nancy Eddins are named within the Bill of Complaint.

In July 1844, William Sellers died. Following his death in 1846, there was a lawsuit over the probate of  his estate (William), husband of Gilly, involving her as the Executor of the estate.

#17 Ratliff, Susannah T. & Nancy vs. Gilly Sellers Exe. of Wm. Sellers Sr. - Bill for injunction & c1846
William Sellers, Senior died July 1844, testate. Widow, Gilly Sellers; William Sellers, Senior and Gilly Eddings married before 1830, present was his brother, Hardy Sellers and her sister, Temperance Eddings who later married Moses Knight.

The known children of William and Gilly Sellers are accounted for from birth to death as well as their father, William Sellers, Sr.; but, no one seem to know what happened to Gilly Eddins Sellers.

The last record we have of Gilly (Eddins) Sellers is the 1846 Bill for Injunction.

#17 Ratliff, Susannah T. & Nancy vs. Gilly Sellers Exe. of Wm. Sellers Sr. - Bill for injunction & c1846

Susannah T. Ratliff left a Will in Anson County probated in 1865. I have found no ties between Susannah T. Ratliff and the William Sellers or William Eddins families.

If you have any information on Gilly (Eddins) Sellers after 1846 please contact me using the email link at the top right side of this page.

William and Gilly (Eddins) Sellers are my Maternal 3rd Great Grandparents.

It's Family Time~The James "Bud" Morris Family

James Morris, aka Bud, was borne 10 June 1853 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
he was the ninth and youngest child of Wiley Morris and his wife Charity Short. James had 6 sisters and  two brothers.

Until his marriage about the year 1874 James and his two older brothers helped their father, a farmer. As the youngest child he was too young to get caught up in leaving home to support the Civil War.

About the year 1874, James Morris married Susan Pressly. The SC Death Certificate for Susan (Pressly) Morris lists her Father as Levi Pressly and mother unknown.

The 1900 Census for Chesterfield County shows James and Susan had been married 26 years with 10 children of which seven were living.

Of the seven living Daughters I have found birth months and year of birth but have been very unsuccessful with death dates and marriages if they in fact did marry.

The seven known children of James Morris and Susan Pressly are:

i. Ida Morris was born in Nov 1877 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ii. Lydia Morris was born in Sep 1885 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina

iii. Henrietta Minnie Morris was born on 2 Aug 1890 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 6 Aug 1984 at the age of 94 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina,

iv. Rosetta Morris was born in Jul 1893 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

v. Mary Theatus Morris, born 2 May 1894, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John Willis Knight, 31 Dec 1927, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina; died 28 Mar 1966, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

vi. Albinnie Morris was born in May 1895 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

vii. Winnie Morris, born 2 Aug 1897, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Charles Manuel Hudson; died 2 Mar 1978, Lancaster County, South Carolina.

I’m still looking for information on 4 of the daughters. If you have any information concerning daughters, Ida, Lydia, Rosetta and Albinnie Morris I would love to hear from you.
