The Last Will and Testament of Moses Dry

Moses Dry was borne 23 December 1817, a son of Daniel Monroe Dry and his wife, Rachel Lipe. He was the sixth of 14 children borne into this family.

On 18 July 1844, Moses married a young lady by the name of Susanna ‘Anna’ Ivey.

Cabarrus County}  October 2d 1863 – I Moses Dry being of sound mind and perfect memory and as life is uncertain when we have to enter the field as a soldier against the common enemy of our country have thought proper to this day to make this my last will and testament following to wit:
1st I give and bequeath to my wife Susanna Dry the lands whereupon I now live during her natural life, also my horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, household & kitchen furniture and all furniture other Stocks farming tools and all the articles  belonging to my farm. All grain and forage. Also money on hand and notes, to have and to hold and to enjoy the aforesaid property for herself and family during her natural life. In witnefs whereof I Moses Dry do hereunto set my hand and seal.

                 I Joseph Young Clerk of said Court do hereby certify that the foregoing last will and testament was exhibited for probate in open court and the due execution thereof by Moses Dry duly proven by the oath of George Barnheart & James E. H. Barnheart the two subscribing witnefses thereto. It is therefore consider by the Court  that said paper writing is the last will and testament of Moses Dry, dec’d and that it be recorded and filed – and there being an executor named in said Will Susannah Dry is appointed administratrix with the will annexed who comes into court and gives bond in the sum of two thousand dollars with George Barnheart and Mathias Barrier as securities is qualified and receives letters of Administration with the Will annexed.

Moses Dry was killed at the Battle of Plymouth on 20 April 1864 just 6 months after executing his Last Will on 2 October 1863.

Susanna Dry is buried in the Saint Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery; Gold Hill Township, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Moses Dry is said to be buried there also. A tombstone exist for Susanna Ivey Dry but, no tombstone's is shown for Moses Dry. 

Moses Dry is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.

Proving The Parents of Rufus Franklin Huneycutt

I need some help from my readers and subscribers. I’m trying to proved to a lineage society that Rufus Franklin Huneycutt is the son of Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Miriam ‘Mary Ann” Huneycutt. Sadly, at presents they will not even accept that he is the son of Elizabeth Miriam Huneycutt.  

On 7 November 1852, Tobias A. Huneycutt and  Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Huneycutt were married in Stanly County, North Carolina. About two years before this marriage, Elizabeth Miriam had a baby boy named Rufus Franklin Huneycutt said to be the son of Tobias A. Huneycutt. Proving this has become a truly monumental task.

In 1860, The Census shows the Family of Tobias A. Huneycutt to consist of the following:

1. The Obituary of Rufus Franklin Huneycutt contains the following statement.

Mr. Huneycutt was born in Stanly county. His father was T. A. Huneycutt, of Stanly; his mother, Elizabeth M. Huneycutt, the latter being also her maiden name.

SUDDEN DEATH OF RUFUS HUNEYCUTT Veteran Printer of City, Father of Alderman Huneycutt and One of Owners of the Charlotte Observer in 1872, Died Last Night Funeral This Afternoon 5 o'clock. Retiring in his usual health, last night about 10:30, Mr. Rufus Franklin Huneycutt, a well-known citizen of Charlotte, died at 10:55, death coming in a stroke of apoplexy, or paralysis. Mr. Huneycutt breathed for only a few minutes after being stricken, dying in the arms of his son, Mr. J. E. Huneycutt, a prominent member of the present Board of Aldermen, in whose home he and his wife resided. The funeral service will be held this afternoon at 5 o'clock at the residence of Alderman and Mrs. Huneycutt, 416 North McDowell street, being conducted by Rev. Dr. I W. Orr, pastor of the Tabernaqle A. R. P. of which church deceased was a member. The interment will be in the family plot at Elmwood. Acting as pallbearers will be: R. N. Ranson, R. M. Forbis, J. H. Ross, W. R. Matthews, W. D. Shoemaker. City Officials To Attend Funeral. As a tribute of respect to Alderman Huneycutt, the city officials will attend the funeral in a body this afternoon, Mayor Kirkpatrick leading the procession. Mr. Huneycutt was born in Stanly county. His father was T. A. Huneycutt, of Stanly; his mother, Elizabeth M. Huneycutt, the latter being also her maiden name. Mr. and Mrs. Huneycutt moved to Charlotte in December, 1858, and here reared their family. Rufus Huneycutt was one of seven children, three only surviving A. J. Huneycutt and Mrs. E. W. Rigler, of Charlotte, and Mrs. T. L. Oxenham, of Richmond. Mr. Huneycutt married Miss Saran R. George, a daughter of Col. William George, of Unionville, S. C, who with seven children survives, the latter being: C. F. and J. E. Huneycutt; Miss Hattie Huneycutt, Mrs. E. A. Brooks, Mrs. J. H. Ray, Mrs. Claudia Wiggins, and Mrs. Maggie Dwyer, all of Charlotte. One of Original Owners of Old Charlotte Observer. Early in life Mr. Huneycutt learned the art of setting type and by the' time he had reached manhood's estate, he was known as one of the most expert printers and leaders of the trade in the city. He first set type for the original Charlotte Observer, his work on the paper ante-dating the ownership of the late Col. Charles R. Jones. The paper was owned and operated as The Charlotte Observer in 1872 by Smith, Watson & McLaughlin, the latter, the late P. S. McLauchiin, father of Mr. D. A. McLaughlin. Mr. Huneycutt bought out Mr. McLauchlin's interest in the latter part of 1872. The Observer was afterward bought by Mr. Johnstone Jones, a. Brother of the late Dr. S. B. Jones, and then passed into the hands of Col. Charles R. Jones, the name, Observer, continuing through the different ownerships to the present time with the exception of a few years. Mr. Huneycutt made a specialty of job printing and worked on both the Charlotte News and the Charlotte Observer. He was the veteran printer, in service, in both offices. Mr. Huneycutt led a quiet, unostentatious life, his work and his home commanding his time. He was a man of fine natural mind. His work at the cases, which was educative, was followed up with study and reading, and he was a well-informed man. His judgment was good and his opinions showed discrimination. He was a man of kindly, friendly nature, and held himself ready at all times to serve a friend. He was trustworthy and held truth as a cardinal virtue. By birth a Lutheran, Mr. Huneycutt afterward joined the A. R. P. church, his membership being at the Tabernacle on East avenue. Mr. Huneycutt was 65 years of age.

2. His Grandmother's Mary Ann "Polly" Crayton Huneycutt named him as her grandson in her Obituary. 

Death of an Aged Lady

A letter received in the city yesterday announces the death, at her home in Stanly county, of Mrs. Polly Huneycutt, wife of Mr. Andrew Huneycutt. She was 80 years old, and was a grandmother of Mr. Rufus Huneycutt.

3. The Marriage Licensee of Rufus Huneycutt identify his parents as Tobias Huneycutt and Elizabeth Huneycutt.

4. December 19, 1872, Mecklenburg County; R. F. Huneycutt applied for a Marriage Licensee for his sister Mary A. C. Huneycutt and John R. Rigler. He stated that his mother and father was still living and had given written consent for the marriage.

5. Sarah Jane Huneycutt, a sister to Rufus Franklin Huneycutt (named in the 1860 Census above) was hearing impaired. She stated in a Special Census on Deaf Family Marriages and Hearing Relatives, 1888-1895 that she had two brothers and 4 sisters. Those two brothers and two of the four sisters are named in the 1860 Census. The other two sisters borne after 1860 were Margaret Elizabeth ’Maggie’ b. 25 June 1862 and Tabitha Lenora, b. 20 Aug 1868.

Sarah Jane was killed in a tragic accident on 12 September 1904.

The Marriage of John Wilson Purvis

Hosick P. Purvis was borne 14 February 1885 in McFarlan, Anson County, North Carolina. He was a son of John P. Purvis and his wife Margaret Gulledge. Hosick was the third of 7 children borne to John and Margaret. He had 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

About 1908 Hosick married Mary A. Purvis; she had just turned thirteen. Mary A. Purvis was the daughter of Nicholas P. Purvis and his wife Annie Roscoe. 

Hosick and Mary would spend their lifetime together until the death of Hosick in May 1942 and raised a family of at least 9 known children. There were 5 daughters and 4 sons. The oldest son, was John Wilson “J. W.” Purvis was born 17 September 1909.

John Wilson Purvis, at age 19 married Lela Tice on 29 Dec 1928 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Lela Tice was the daughter of Franklin A. Tice and wife Bedie.  [This surname is varying on documents from TICE to TYSON].

John Wilson and Lela had 8 children borne to this union of which the 1st and last; both daughters, died as infants.

Sometime after 1940 John Wilson Purvis moved his family to Hillsborough County, Florida. On-line documents show that he served as a crew member on ships between the USA and the Caribbean port of Curacao before his marriage to Lela. 

John Wilson Purvis died 3 June 1973. His wife Lela Tyson Purvis died 5 January 1985. Both are buried in Hillsboro Memorial Cemetery, Brandon, Hillsborough County, Florida.

The Marriage of Rufus F. Huneycutt

Rufus Franklin Huneycutt was a Christmas gift for his parents Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Miriam “Mary Ann” Huneycutt arriving on Christmas Eve 1850. He was their first borne child. In a few short years the family including Rufus had grown to seven with a brother and five sisters. 

On 12 March 1872, at the age of 21, Rufus Franklin Huneycutt was united in marriage to the lovely Miss Sarah ‘Sallie’ R. George, daughter of Col. William R. George and his wife, Matilda. 

Rufus Franklin owned a printing business in the city of Charlotte where he was well known and respected.  In 1872, the year he was married, Rufus was one of the owners of the city newspaper, The Charlotte Observer. His son, Mr. James Eagle Huneycutt, was a prominent member of the Board of Aldermen in 1915, the year his father died.

ii. William Rufus Huneycutt was born in Aug 1874 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. He died on 14 Jul 1875 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

iii. Hattie T. Huneycutt was born in Jan 1877 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

iv. James Eagle Huneycutt Sr., born 2 Dec 1878, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina; married Annie Valette Beattie; died 21 Oct 1945, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

v. Mary J. Huneycutt was born about Mar 1880 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

It’s Family Time~The John William Wadsworth Family

John William Wadsworth was borne 21 February 1856, a son of Louis H. Wadsworth and Mary Ann Freeman. He was their first borne son. John William had two older sisters, 5 younger sisters, of which one died as an infant and one brother.

About January 1878, John William married Margaret Emaline Davis.

Margaret Emaline was borne 2 November 1853, a daughter of John Calvin Davis and his wife Charlotte Hurst. Her father, John Calvin, was my 3rd Great grand Uncle. Margaret was borne into a rather large family. Her arrival in November 1853 made her #9 among what would become a family of twelve; six brothers and five sisters.  

John William and Margaret Emeline first child arrived on 1 November 1878, a son they named J. Monroe Wadsworth. Monroe would eventually have 4 other siblings, two brothers and two sisters.  

The children of John William Wadsworth and Margaret Emaline Davis are:

i. J. Monroe Wadsworth was born on 1 Nov 1878 in Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina. He died on 6 Jul 1888 at the age of 9 in Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina.

ii. J. Ida Wadsworth was born on 16 Apr 1880 in Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina. She cared for her parents until their death in early 1938; appeared in the 1940 census for Darlington County, SC and no further record found after the 1940 Census. 

iii. Mettie Jane Wadsworth, born 9 May 1882, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina; married Willie N. McKenzie, 15 May 1895, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina; died 23 Dec 1960, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina.

iv. James L. Wadsworth, born 18 May 1885, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina; married Sarah King, 10 Aug 1904, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina; died 23 May 1921, Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia.

v. W. Carl Wadsworth, born 23 Nov 1892, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Ethel Lee, 16 May 1916; died 23 Aug 1976, Florence, Florence, South Carolina.

On 19 January 1938, Margaret E. Davis Wadsworth died. One month and 19 days later John William Wadsworth died on 10 March 1938. John William and Margaret E. Wadsworth are buried in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bishopville, Lee County, South Carolina.

John William Wadsworth is my 2nd Cousin 3X removed.

Margaret Emaline Davis Wadsworth is my 1st Cousin 4X removed.

Tributes to departed brother, Simpson Davis

Alliance N. 269, Union Co., N. C.
September 14, 1889.
We, the undersigned committee, having been appointed by our Alliance to draft some resolutions of respect for our departed brother, Simpson Davis, feel that
Whereas, Almighty God has been pleased, out of His wisdom and mercy, to remove our brother from the strife's and turmoil's of this life into that eternal rest where its sorrows never come; and where as, he has been a faithful member of this Alliance, No. 269, attached to its interest,
governed by its constitution and having a conscious regard for its solemn obligation; therefore be it -
Resolved, That by the death of Bro. Davis the fraternity, and more especially
this Alliance, has lost an excellent member, whose punctuality at the meetings of the same was notable, whose integrity we unhesitatingly admit and whose character we most heartily endorse.
Resolved, That though deploring his loss, we bow in meek submission to the
will of God.
Resolved, That our sympathies are tendered to the bereaved family of our
brother.
Resolved, That these resolutions be recorded in the minutes of this Alliance
and a copy be sent to the widow and children of the deceased, and also to The Progressive Farmer and Monroe Enquirer for publication.

Simpson Davis is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed. Simpson was borne 11 February 1821 in Chesterfield County, SC a son of Isaac Jacob Davis and Sarah “Sallie” Willis.

Abt 1845, Simpson married Elva Threatt. To this union were borne 4 children before Elva‘s death about the year 1863. After the death of Elva, Simpson married Rechamira Beaver about 1869. To this union were borne five children.

Simpson Davis died on 28 August 1889 and the above article appeared in “The Progressive Farmer”, Winston, N.C., 1 October 1889, Page 5, column 4 & 5.

It’s Family Time~The Ida Delle Alford Family

Ida Delle Lang was born on 9 Jun 1915 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was a daughter of John Rufus Lang and Sarah Frances “Sallie” Purvis. She was the second borne child of a family of nine children. She had  4 sisters and 4 brothers.

Ida Delle Lang, age 20, and Clyde Harrison Alford, age 25, were married on 28 Sep 1935 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Clyde Harrison Alford, son of John C. Alford and Ida Campbell, was born on 6 Feb 1910 in South Carolina. 

No known children were borne to this union.

Clyde Harrison Alford died on 26 Mar 1974 at the age of 64 in Morrisville, Wake, North Carolina. Ida Delle Lang died on 4 Dec 1982 at the age of 67 in Thomasville, Davidson, North Carolina. 

Clyde and Ida Alford are buried in Hayes Chapel Christian Church Cemetery
Garner, Wake County, North Carolina.

Ida Delle Lang Alford is my 1st Cousin Once removed.

The Alabama Death of Anna Jane Douglass Sellers

Anna Jane Douglass, daughter of John Daniel McLaurin Douglass and Harriett Newell McFarland was born in Chesterfield, South Carolina. At age 20, Anna married Phillip Albert Sellers. Phillip Albert Sellers was the son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. 

Anna and Philip reared a family of nine children; 5 daughters and 4 sons. When the youngest child, a daughter was about 11 years of age her father Philip Albert Sellers died on 6 April 1896 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He is buried in the Douglass cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

After the loss of her husband, Anna Jane stayed for a while in Chesterfield but by 1910, she had moved to Green Bay, Covington County, Alabama to live with her daughter Sarah Ann “ Sallie”  and Son-in-Law Joseph Benjamin Hilton. This changed took place sometime between 1900 and 1910; the exact date has not been determined.

Anna Jane Douglass Sellers died on 7 February 1914 and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Elba, Coffee County, Alabama.

1830 Tax List~Trigg County, Kentucky

One of the big mysteries and unanswered questions in my genealogical database is ~When did Ruth Moultrie Cook pass away? What is her death date?

No Obituary, tombstone or death notice has been found for Ruth Cook. She appeared in the following Tax lists for Trigg County, Kentucky – 1820, 1821, 1826, 1827, 1828, 1829 and 1830.

The 1830 Tax List (shown here) is the last entry I have found for Ruth Cook. She is definitely not listed in the 1831 tax list. Every page has been checked and there is no entry for Ruth Cook. 

Speculation varies as to when she passed away. Some say she died in 1829; others say she died in 1830. I have seen no specific date for her death.

Her FindAGrave memorial says she died in 1829. The memorial implied that a tombstone exits but no tombstone is attached to the memorial. 

If you have any information about the death of Ruth Moultrie Cook I would love to hear from you. 

Ruth Moultrie Cook is my 5th Great Grand Aunt.

It’s Family Time~The Joseph Morris Families

Joseph Morris was born 7 Aug 1842 in Anson County, North Carolina. He was a son of Wiley Morris and Charity Short and was one of eight children. His siblings were 2 brothers and 5 sisters.

Joseph Morris married Jane "Jenny” Burr about 1868. Jane "Jenny” Burr, born 25 Oct 1845 was a daughter of Lewis Burr and Mary Elizabeth Long. Her life was short lived when she passed away about 1872 at the age of 27.

Joseph Morris and Jane Burr had the following children:

i. Louis Arthur Morris, born 28 Nov 1869, Anson County, North Carolina; married Susan Delila Campbell; died 14 Jan 1944, Anson County, North Carolina.

ii. Mary Melissa Morris, born abt 1872; married James Daniel McDuffie, 1889; died abt 31 Aug 1909.

After the death of Jane, Joseph Morris and Jane’s sister Mary Elizabeth Burr were married on 3 Apr 1872. Mary Elizabeth Burr, daughter of Lewis Burr and Mary Elizabeth Long, was born 10 May 1844.

Joseph Morris and Mary Elizabeth Burr had the following children:

i. James Washington "Jim" Morris, born 24 Jan 1873, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Elizabeth Jane Burr, 21 Jan 1904, Anson County, North Carolina; died 27 Oct 1944, Union County North Carolina.

ii. Luke Jackson Morris, born Jul 1876; married Rosa F. Campbell, 1903; died 26 May 1923.

iii. Mark Morris, born 11 Sep 1877; married Martha Elizabeth Campbell, 7 Jan 1900, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 4 Mar 1940, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.

iv. John Walter Morris, born Sep 1880; married Nettie E. Griggs; married Timmie F. Griggs; married Rosa F. Campbell; died 21 Feb 1955, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.

v. Lucy Ann Morris, born May 1883; died 13 Jan 1947, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.

Joseph Morris died on 27 Aug 1919 at the age of 77 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina. He was buried on 28 Aug 1919 at Sandy Plains.

Mary Elizabeth Burr Morris died on 10 Mar 1925 at the age of 80 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina.

Joseph Morris is my 2nd Great GrandUncle.

When Did Tobias A. Huneycutt Pass Away?

It’s hard to believe that someone can pass away in one of our modern city during any time period and no mention of their passing is recorded. Such is the case with my 2nd Great Grand Uncle Tobias A. Huneycutt.

Tobias A. Huneycutt was born about 1824 in Montgomery County North Carolina. He was a son of Marcus “Mark” Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry. He was their second born child. Tobias A Huneycutt had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. In 1852, at age 28, he married Elizabeth Mariam “Mary Ann” Huneycutt. Elizabeth Mariam was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Huneycutt and Mary Ann Crayton.  

Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Mariam Huneycutt had the following children:

        i.    Rufus Franklin Huneycutt, born 24 Dec 1850, Stanly County, North Carolina.
         ii.    Andrew Jackson Huneycutt, born 14 Aug 1853, Stanly County, North Carolina
         iii.   Mary A. C. Huneycutt, born 1855, Stanly County, North Carolina.
         iv.   Sarah Jane Huneycutt, born abt 1857, Stanly County, North Carolina.
         v.    Susan Frances Huneycutt, born Jun 1860, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
         vi.   Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Huneycutt, born 25 Jun 1862, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC.
         vii.   Tabitha Lenora Huneycutt, born 20 Aug 1868, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Tobias A. Huneycutt  was enumerated in the 1870 but was not with his family in the 1880 Census suggesting that he had passed away sometime between 1870 and 1880. No obituary, tombstone or death notice has been found for Tobias A. Huneycutt that would document his passing and death date. 

In an attempt to narrow down the time period for his death date I began to look at alternative documents.

On 24 May 1874 Tobias A. Huneycutt and his wife Elizabeth Miriam acknowledged the due Execution by them of the foregoing deed. This is a Mecklenburg County, NC Land deed from DEED BOOK_10, Pg 394

State of North Carolina}   
Mecklenburg County} This 24th day of May A. D. 1874 personally appeared before me E. A. Osborne C.S.C. & Probate Judge the above named T. A. Hunnycut and E. M. Hunnycut his wife and acknowledged the due Execution by them of the foregoing deed. And thereupon the said E. M. Hunnycut being my me  privately examined separately and apart from her said husband touching her voluntarily Consent in the Execution of the said Deed of Conveyence. She on such her conscience declared that she had executed the same freely of her own will and account and without any force fear or under influence of her said husband or any other person and did still Voluntarily apart thereto. Therefore let said Deed and these certificates be registered.   

T. A. Huneycutt name appeared in multiple newspaper clippings in June 1874 for unpaid taxes.

On 17 December 1878, Jas O. Garibaldi applied for a marriage license to wed Sue F. Huneycutt daughter of Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Miriam Huneycutt. On this License James stated that Sue’s father (Tobias) was deceased and her Mother was still living.

With these two documents we have narrowed the death of Tobias A. Huneycutt as occurring sometime between 24 May 1874 and 17 December 1878. This is much narrow than 1870 to 1880 but the point is even though we have narrowed the time frame we still DO NOT have a firm Death Date.
