Eli P. Brock's Short Life

Eli P. Brock began his life in 1806. His parents are unknown but, his father may have been the James Brock who lived to be almost 100 years old. While his father may have lived a long life; the life of Eli P. Brock was too short for his time here on earth.

Eli P. Brock lived his life as a single man; I have found no evidence of any marriage at any time. He first appeared in an Anson County Land Deed, Benjamin BROCK to James BROCK, dated 12 December 1827. Eli P. Brock was age 21, and signed as a witness to this Land Deed ( "W", Page 147-149). James Brock is mostly likely the father of Benjamin and Eli P. Brock.

Eli P. Brock is next found on 4 May 1839 in Hinds county, Mississippi. There he is living among kinfolk who arrived there earlier and is again involved in a Land Deed but not for land. This Land Deed is just a mechanism to document a transaction between William R. Brock & Eli P. Brock who are 1st cousins.

Whereas, “I William R. Brock, of the State of Mississippi and county of Hinds for and in consideration of the sum of $616.00 dollars to me in hand paid by Eli P. Brock of the same place and at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained sold and delivered and by these presents do grant bargain sell and delivered unto the said Eli P. Brock Viz one plow horse at seventy five dollars twenty head of cattle at ten dollars each and twelve head of stock hogs at three dollars each one horse cart twenty five dollars fifty barrels corn at one dollars per barrel and all my individual crops for this year that is about six acres of cotton fifteen acres of corn and all other necessary attachments to said crops and cultivate and gather said crop in favor of Eli P. Brock for the sum of three hundred dollars…”

In 1840 we find Eli P. Brock in the 1840 County Tax Rolls for Hinds County, Mississippi. In that same year, on 2 February 1840, we find Moses Brock selling Eli P. Brock lands which looks as if its parts of the original Land patent of William Brock. The available Land Deed is almost unreadable so I could not determine how many acres were involved in the transaction but $10,000.00 is a lot of money for just 40, 60 or a 160 acre plats.

2 Feb 1840 - for $10,000, Moses Brock sells to Eli P. Brock S half of SW quarter Sec 14 & N half of W half NE Sec 23 & S half of W half NE quarter & N half of E half Sec 15 & W half of SW quarter Sec 15 & S half of W half NW Sec 23 & E half SE Sec 15 & E half NE Sec 22, Twp 3 R 4W on Tallahala Creek, 2 miles from Utica [Ref: Deed Book 13 p. 70, Hinds Court House, Raymond, MS]

Moses Brock  and Eli P. Brock are 1st Cousins. Where did Eli P. Brock get $10,000.00 to purchase land? Eli P. Brock shows up on the Tax Rolls for Hinds County in 1841 and 1843.

Suddenly, in 1844, Eli P. Brock died.

His Estate was Probated on 23 June 1845 in Hinds County, Mississippi.

Death of Eli P. Brock

Eli P. Brock is a 2nd Cousin 4 times removed. He was born 2 December 1827 in Marion County, Mississippi, a son of James L. Brock and his wife Elizabeth Purvis. He was the 4th born of 11 children.

On 20 November 1850, Eli P. Brock married Winney E. Stallings, daughter of James Stallings and Sally Pearson. To this union were born 7 known children. Sadly, Eli P. Brock passed away sometime before 23 December 1878 leaving Winney a widow with 4 children under the age of twenty-one. The youngest being a son, age 6.

Pike County, Mississippi was created in 1815. It’s parent county before creation was Marion County. Records for the County prior to 1882 are almost non-existence; but, I did find this land Deed dated 23 December 1878 in Deed Book  “A” page 85.

In this Deed,  Winney Brock, widow, and her two adult daughters (Nancy and Elizabeth) are selling their interest in the estate lands of Eli P. Brock to her oldest son, Alexander Brock.

The land deed provides indirect evidence that Eli P. Brock passed away sometime before 23 December 1878.

1839 Land Deed Between William R. Brock and Eli P. Brock

FamHist LibraryI’m back after spending 10 wonderful days with my son and his family just outside Ogden, Utah. Needless to say, I also spent some time in Salt Lake City at the Family History Library.

While there I found this land between between William R. Brock and Eli P. Brock. William and Eli are/were 1st cousin.1 William has been in Mississippi for some time arriving between his birth in Chesterfield in 1817 and their enumeration in the 1820 census for Hinds County, Mississippi.

Eli P. Brock remained in Chesterfield County and the surrounding area until about 1839. In 1827 he was witness to a deed between Benjamin Brock and James Brock (Anson County, NC Deed Book “W”, page 148).

Brock, W-148

I think this deed was executed about the time of Eli P. Brock’s arrival in Hinds County, Mississippi and his 1st Cousin is helping him get established and settled down in his new surroundings.

Surname Saturday~James Brock, b. ca 1745, d. Dec. 15, 1847

Today’s posting is a request for help. From my previous postings over the past year and a half; I am sure you are well aware of the absence of records for the Chesterfield County area of South Carolina.

The Brock Surname is one of my primary surnames in my Maternal line. Just recently I found an obituary suggesting that one James Brock of  the Cheraw District of South Carolina was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

“…the house of Mr. James Brock, of Cheraw District, S. C. a Revolutionary soldier, aged nearly one hundred years, was consumed by fire …”

Well this is news to me and since all the Brock in Chesterfield County are related then I’m elated. So off I go to the Fold3 website www.Fold3.com

On Fold3, I found 2 images related to James Brock of South Carolina.

Page 1 - James Brock

Page 2 - James Brock

Information from above Documents:
Name: James Brock
Unit: Fifth (5th) South Carolina Regiment
Enlisted:  September 18, 1776
Volume 9, page 35 (Does anyone know what Volume 9, page 35 is referring to?)

The obituary for James Brock states that he perished in a fire that destroyed his home and that he was nearly one hundred years old. Census records indicates we are  talking about James Brock found in the 1800-1840 Censuses.
  • 1800 CENSUS: No Twp Listed, Chesterfield  County, SC, Series: M32  Roll: 47, Page: 101 (339); James BROCK, age 26- 44 [1756-1774], 4 Males, under 10; 1 Female, under 10; 2 Females, ages 10-15 and 1 Female, age 26-44[Wife].

It’s obvious that if I am to prove that James Brock did in fact serve in the Revolutionary War the records of the National  Archives are going to need to be explored.
This James Brock is the Father of Eli P. Brock, Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H.    Brock.

While I don’t have a single document stating this fact; this document in the estate file of Eli P. Brock, Hinds County, Mississippi provide circumstantial evidence that Eli P. Brock, Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H. Brock are related.

Eli P. Brock went to Mississippi with his Uncle William Brock and some cousins while Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H. Brock stayed in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

So, I have a request for each of you, my readers. I have shared all the clues I have about James Brock. Take 30 minutes and let’s unite in networking, crowdsourcing, social media or any way possible and see if  we can find records for James Brock’s service in the Revolutionary War.
Based on my current research James Brock is my 4th Great Grandfather.

A migration from Chesterfield County, South Carolina occurred around 1818. Many of the local families left with Gilbert Purvis and his brother James F. Purvis. Among the families were  Brock’s, Purvis’, Holifield and many others. They migrated down through Georgia into Clarke County, Alabama and eventually settling in and around Hinds, Rankin and Smith Counties, Mississippi.

Joseph Purvis, husband of Elizabeth Cook was among this group. So was Moses Holifield of Anson County and his wife Milly Rivers of Chesterfield. Joseph Purvis died about 1842. By 1844, his wife Elizabeth had re-married to Richard Oldham/Odom most likely to help care for her young children. Records point to a rather large family for Joseph & Elizabeth.

Also among the group was Eli P. Brock. Eli P. Brock died in Hinds County Mississippi in 1844. No record has been found that would indicate that Eli was married; so without documentation I choose to state that he was a single man. When Eli P. Brock died Moses Brock was appointed as administrator of his estate.

Now, based on the research that I have done Moses Brock and Eli P. Brock was first cousins. Moses Brock father was William Brock married to Charlotte (LNU). William and Charlotte migrated before 1818 to Louisiana.

In 1844, Eli P. Brock died and left a small estate with few assets (one lot of sundries $6; one yearling $3) and a lot of liability. It got so bad that Moses Brock petitioned the Court to declare the estate insolvent and it was thus order in Court on the 23rd June 1846, Hinds County, Mississippi.

A hearing on Final settlement of the estate took place during January term 1851 with notice that final settlement would be adjudicated at the April term 1851.

To date, very little information has been found about Eli P. Brock. The estate notice above confirmed my assertion that he was a single man and indicates to me that Samuel Brock, Esquire Brock, Benjamin Brock, and all other unknown heirs who are non-residents are siblings. Samuel, Esquire and Benjamin are the names of Brock men who remained in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Samuel would be Samuel W. . Brock, b. 1796. died after 1880, married Martha.

Benjamin would be Benjamin Brock, b. 1790, died bef 1870 married Temperance and Esquire is Squire H. Brock, b. 5 Feb. 1805, d. 10 Feb. 1888; married Rachel Parker.

Eli. P. Brock estate can be found in Hinds County, Mississippi and on LDS Family History Library Film #1749976, Probate File #778 and also on Mississippi State Archives Film MDAH #10401.[2]
