Amanuensis Monday~Land Deed, Isaac Hurst + Others to J. B. Douglass

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is ta Chesterfield County, SC Land Deed between Isaac Hurst + Others to J. B. Douglass.1

Isaac Hurst, 1804-30 Sep 1884, was twice married. His first wife, Henrietta Rivers, passed away on 15 Aug 1865 after 40 years of marriage at the age of 60.

After her death, Isaac remarried to a young lady 20 years his junior named Sarah Ann “Sallie” [LNU]. The maiden named of Isaac Hurst second wife remained a mystery for many years until the below Land Deed was discovered.

Case in point, as late as June 2014 I did not know Sarah Ann‘s maiden name as indicated by my post on 6 June 2014.

https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2014/06/second-family-of-isaac-hurst-b-1804.html

This Chesterfield County Land Deed (1:388) proves that Isaac Hurst (1804-1884) married Sarah Ann McNair after the death of Henrietta Rivers.

In the 1850 Census, Isaac Hurst reported that he was 46 years of age making his birth year to be 1804. The tombstone above shows that he died at, age 74, Thus a birth year of 1810. The tombstone also shows that he died on 31 September 1884 and we all know that September only has 30 days.1 2

Isaac Hurst was twice married. He married fist, Henrietta “Ritta” Rivers abt 1825 thus providing support for an 1804 birth year. This marriage year is based on the birth of their first child, Sarah Ann on 10 March 1826.  Isaac & Ritta had 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. She died  15 Aug 1865 at age 60. 3 4

Isaac next married Sarah Ann “Sally” (LNU) about 1865/66. One daughter was born to this union. Isaac died on 30 September 1884 and Sally died  3 April 1892. 5 6 7

Military Monday~Two Isaac Hurst

Sometimes the resources we are exposed to can be confusing and add more doubt than certainty to our research. Case in point is Isaac Hurst of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

In pre-civil war Chesterfield County there were two young men by the name of Isaac Hurst, who were born at such a time that they would be of age to serve when the Civil War began in 1861.

Isaac Hurst
www.ancestry.com

Those two men were:
  • Isaac F. Hurst, age 33, son of William & Nancy Rivers Hurst.
  • Isaac Hurst, age 35, son of Isaac & Henrietta Rivers Hurst.
We know that neither of these two men survived the Civil War. So we have two men and our task is to determine when, where and how each of these men died?

We start by looking at Civil War resources to determine what happened to these two men. But, first let’s take a quick look on FindAGrave.

FindAGrave reveals tombstones for both of our men:
  • Find A Grave Memorial# 43479224 – Isaac Hurst
  • Find A Grave Memorial#30006251 – Isaac F. Hurst

Isaac Hurst
Find A Grave Memorial# 43479224 1
This memorial shows that Isaac Hurst son of Isaac & Henrietta Rivers Hurst was:
Birth: Jan. 15, 1837
Death: Jul. 2, 1862
Wounded June 15, 1862 at Secessionville, James Island, S.C. from which he never recovered.
Fold3.com 2
Isaac Hurst appears on a list of casualties, of Smith’s Battalion, in the engagement at Sucessionville, S. C. , June 16, 1862.
http://www.fold3.com/image/259306628/
Broken Fortunes, page 173, 3
Shows that Isaac Hurst, Private, Co. B, 9th SCVI Bn., died 25 June 1862 at Sucessionville, Died of Wounds.
So we have a conflict; his tombstone shows that Isaac died 2 July 1862; Broken Fortunes shows a death date of 25 June 1862.
A U.S., Confederate Army Casualty Lists and Reports, 1861-1865 shows Isaac Hurst was severely wounded on June 19, 1862. 4
Isaac Hurst Casuality List

It unclear whether Isaac Hurst died 25 June 1862 or 2 July 1862.

In my research there is no doubt that Isaac F. Hurst son of William and Nancy Rivers Hurst died 4 October 1862, at home, from wounds received in the Civil War. There is doubt as to the date of death for Isaac Hurst son of Isaac & Henrietta Rivers Hurst; but we know he died at Sucessionville, of wounds received in battle.

One more mystery.
Then in the book “Broken Fortunes” we have one additional Isaac Hurst that died in the Civil War from South Carolina.

Broken Fortunes, page 173 9
This book shows an Isaac Hurst, age 27, Private, 4th SCVC, died 15 May 1864 at home, died of Disease. The age of this Isaac Hurst matches the age of Isaac F. Hurst but the death dates are different. The 4th SCV was primarily made up of men from the Chesterfield area of Cheraw; yet, only 2 known Isaac Hurst perished in the Civil War. There is no Isaac Hurst listed with the 4th Cav on Fold3.com.

So who is Isaac Hurst, age 27, Private, 4th SCVC, died 15 May 1864 at home, died of Disease?

It no surprise to any active researcher to find data on allied families while researching our direct lines. So over the years we collect this data and one day we may reach out and do some research on that line. Such is the case with one of several Isaac Hursts in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Until this past week, I had not actively researched Isaac Hurst and his family. However, over the years I had collected data that shows that Isaac Hurst, was born in 1804 and died 30 September 1884. Isaac was twice married; his 1st wife was Henrietta “Ritta” Rivers and his 2nd wife was Sarah Ann “Sally . (LNU). His 1st marriage resulted in 8 children based on census data. His second marriage bore  what was thought to be two additional children; but, is actually one child, a daughter.

Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers had the following children:
i. Sarah Ann Hurst, born 10 Mar 1826; Samuel Boatwright.
ii. William Monroe Hurst, born 25 Dec 1828; married Mary E. Powell.
iii. Lauretta Hurst, born 1831; married George R. Boatwright.
iv. Isaac Hurst, born on 15 Jan 1837.
v. Nancy J. Hurst, born 20 May 1838; married William Alfred Davis.
vi. Phillip James Hurst, born 22 Jan 1840; married Mary Ann Gainey.
vii. Polly Hurst, born in 1841.
viii. Jacob Hurst, born in 1843.

Isaac Hurst and Sarah Ann had the following children:
i. Nora Hurst was born about 1868.
ii. Mary C. Hurst, born Jun 1870; married James W. Douglass.

The 1880 Chesterfield County Census is the last census in which Isaac Hurst appears. It shows Isaac, age 79, with his 2nd wife, Sally and their daughter - Nora Hurst.1

This is a good start but lets take a look at my favorite record set – The County Probate Files.
In the Chesterfield County Probate files we find that Probate Folder #493 is for Isaac Hurst and it turns out to be quite interesting.2

The major surprise in this folder was Isaac Hurst Will and it’s contents. The will made no mention of his first family, no mention of his current wife and a legacy was only left to his daughter. His daughter, Nora, in the 1880 census turns out to be – Christain McNona Hurst, aka Nora. 3

After, thoroughly researching this family it’s clear that Mary C. Hurst and Nora Hurst ARE NOT  two distinct individuals but is the only child born to Isaac Hurst and his second wife, Sarah Ann and that her given name is Christian McNona Hurst. The daughter who married James W. Douglass.

Rationale:
If there had been two daughters born, both would have been listed in the 1880 census.
Two, The Will only names one Child – Christian McNona Hurst. If there had been two children they would have been named in the WILL. Why the wife is not named is unknown. She passed away in April 1892.5

In subsequent Census James W. Douglass wife is listed as:
1900 – Manona Douglass 6
1910 – Mary C. Douglas 7
1920 – Mary C. M. Douglas 8
