One of those children was Mollie Sellers. Sarah (Purvis) Sellers is the daughter of Vicy Purvis (believed to be a Turnage, unproven though) and John Purvis. She was born between 1811-1814 and in/or about 1827 married Elijah Sellers, son of  Phillip Sellers, Sr. and his wife Mary.

The Hardy Sellers buying this land is her brother Hardy J. Sellers. This deed transaction took place on 13 January 1868. Sarah (Purvis) Sellers could not be found in the 1870 Census for Chesterfield County but a land deed indicates she was alive 14 January 1870.

Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #546 – Sarah Sellers

Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folder from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed by the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

On 19 April 1880, A. J. Smith petitioned the Chesterfield  County Probate Court to grant him Letters of Administration on the Estate of Sarah Sellers stating in his petition that none of his kinfolk has done so and that she had died back in 1878 or about then.

To the Honorable W. J. Hanna Judge of Probate for Chesterfield County:
The petition of Andrew J. Smith by Hough & Kennedy his attorneys respectfully shows to this Court:
I. That Sarah Sellers of the County and State aforesaid died Intestate on or about the day of 1878.
II. That she died possessed of a Small personal estate in the County and State afore mentioned.
III. That there has been no application for Letters of Adminstartion upon her estate by any of the next of kin as your p or any other person as your petitioner is informed and believes though such application might have long since been made
Wherefore your petitioner prays that you do grant to him Letters of Administrations upon the Estate of Sarah Sellers deceased and for such other relief as made be necessary.
Hough + Kennedy
Petitioner’s Attorneys

The Court granted A. J. Smith his request and Letters of Administration and issued a Warrant of Appraisement for Administration on 1st day of July 1880.
Appointed appraiser were:
  • C. L. Vick
  • D. M. Barentine
  • T. P. Craig
I have noticed that when an estate was abandoned for a period of time (inactive, never initiated) that some of the more prominent men in the County would petition the Court to administered the estate.  In all cases they seem to give the kinfolk, of the deceased, ample time to initiate probate action. This seems to be a custom for that time period in Chesterfield County, South Carolina (1850-1900). During this time small personal estates even under $50 dollar were probated. I think the Courts must have set limits on the values of estates to be probated around the 1900’s.

I have not been able to identify who this Sarah Sellers is related too. None of her kin was mentioned in the estate. Andrew Jackson  (A. J.) Smith has no biological or ancillary connection to  Sarah Sellers that I can find.

There is a detail inventory list contained within the probate folder with a list of buyers and the price they paid for each item.

If you know who this Sarah Sellers is; please click on the E-mail link in the right column and send me a note. Otherwise, you could leave comments to this post.

It’s Family Time~John H. and Sarah Sellers Eddins

It's Family Time
The 1870 census for Cabarrus County, North Carolina shows Sarah Sellers Eddins, age 32, as the spouse of John H. Eddins.

Sarah and John’s first born a daughter named Susan was born in 1861 so John and Sarah were most likely married sometime after the census was taken in 1860. At the time of the census enumeration in July of 1860, John H. Eddins, was a single man in the household of his parents, John Riley Eddins and Mary Sarah Martin.

John enlisted into the Civil War on 22 July 1861 with Company I, North Carolina 7th Infantry Regiment. With the birth of their first child in 1861, John and Sarah were already married when John left home for the War.
John and Sarah Sellers Eddins had 5 children before his untimely death which occurred sometime around July 1872 at the age of 36.

Their children were:
i. Susan E. Eddins was born about 1861 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
ii. William Edward Eddins, born 19 Feb 1866, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Mary Griggs; died 27 Dec 1941.
iii. Edward Rainey "Dock" Eddins, born 28 Sep 1866, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Sarah F. Griggs; married Patsy Short; died 9 Oct 1953, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.
iv.  John F. Eddins was born about Jan 1870 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He died before 1880.

Civil records related to John H. Eddins and Sarah Sellers are very limited. I have found no records of their death and only Census and Civil war records related to John’s age. He was 36 when he enlisted on 22 July 1861, making his birth year to be 1825. But, in the 1850 census he was listed as age 20. Sarah's age also varied considerably in the census sometimes only aging 5 years in a 10 year period.

Sarah Sellers Eddins is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

Land Deed Confirms Family Composition

When the bonfire had quit burning and the soldiers had marched or ridden off, the good citizens of Chesterfield County retrieved one (1) burned deed book from the burning embers that was once their county courthouse.  That Burned Book is still maintained on file in the present day courthouse. The below deed between Sarah Sellers and James Oliver to John Purvis can be found on page 48 of that book.

I have previously written about the use of land deeds in family research and what a valuable goldmine Land Deeds can be in your research.

This particular deed, pulled from the ashes and burning embers is one of those “gold nuggets”  because it confirms and verifies the family composition of one Vicey Purvis.

Vicey Purvis appears in three census in Chesterfield County South Carolina. In all cases, she is listed without a husband in the household.

1830 CENSUS: Chesterfield County, South Carolina; NARA Series: M19; Roll Number: 172; Family History Film: 0022506,  Page: 258; Line 15, Vicy Purvis, female, age 40-49, 3 males, age 10-14 and 1 female, age 16-19.
1840 CENSUS: Chesterfield County, South Carolina; NARA Series: M704; Roll Number: 510; Family History Film: 0022508, Image 1338, Page: 362; Line 15, Vicy Purvis, female, age 50-59, 1 males, age 20-29 [Stephen] and 1 male, less than 5 years of age.
1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Roll:  M432_851; Image: 290, Page: 143A(stamped); Line 19, Dwelling 685, Family 685; Vicy PERVIS, female, age 64, born in SC; Daniel TURNAGE, male, age 12, born in SC and John TURNAGE, male, age 11, born in SC.

In 1850, Vicy states that she was 64 years old; thus born in 1786, which matches the age reported in the other two census.

In 1830 she had 3 males born between 1816-1820 and 1 female born between 1811-1814.

Two of these males were:
John “Jack” Purvis, born 1814
Stephen Purvis, born 1818
1 male (unknown)
The female born between 1811-1814 was most likely her last born, a daughter named Mary, though the census shows that she was born in 1821. There is also a possibility that the 16-19 year old female was Sarah Purvis just before she married Elijah Sellers.

In February 1861, when the above Land Deed was executed we see that this deed was used to transfer land which is now in possession of Sarah Sellers and James Oliver; lands that is the Estate Lands of Vicey Purvis. Those named within this deed are:

Vicey Purvis, (Mother)
  • John Purvis, (Son)
  • Sarah [Purvis] Sellers (Daughter)
  • James Oliver (Son-in-law, Husband of Mary Purvis)
  • Stephen Purvis, a son, born 1818 was not named within the deed because he was deceased. Stephen Purvis chose to enlist as a volunteer in the Mexican War. During the Battle of Vera Cruz, he was killed in June 1847.
I’m at a lost as to why Mary [Purvis] Oliver was not named. Also, in many years of research I have not yet identified a Male Purvis as the husband of Vicey [Maiden Name unknown] Purvis.

If you have any information on Vicy/Vicey Purvis, her children or her spouse I would love to hear from you. In almost 40 years of Purvis research I have not heard from anyone researching this specific line.
