Who are the Parents of Hezekiah "Hugh" Brock?

One of my greatest genealogical disappointments is that I have not been able to determine the parents of my maternal 2nd Great Grandfather, Hezekiah "Hugh" Brock.

We know that the Chesterfield County Brock's are all descendants of Valentine Brack and his two wives Anna Margaretha Lischer and  Susanna Blaester.

One of those children was a James Brock born 13 September 1749 and died 15 Dec 1847. His full name might have been James Valentine Brock. His wife is unknown,

In 1790, THERE WERE NO BROCK's in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. The immigrant Valentine Brock was found in the Fayette District of Richmond County, North Carolina just across the state line with South Carolina and Chesterfield County.

1790 CENSUS: Fayette District, Richmond County, NC, Series: M637  Roll: 7,  Image: 442; Family History Library Film: 0568147. Page: 173, Line 2; 1 Male Over 16 [Valentine BROCK] and 2 Females,[ Wife and daughter].

In 1800 CENSUS, that had changed and we find

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • Susanna Brock

The numbers changed again in 1810 CENSUS and at that time we find:

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • William Brock [Moved to LA & MS]

The 1820 Census consisted of the following Brock families:

    • Valentine Brock
    • James Brock
    • Benjamin Brock
      • It's easy to see with a matrix that the Valentine and James Brock family has been consistent over the past years just aging  another 10 years with the taking of each Census. It also easy to see that Benjamin Brock, age 26-45 in 1820 came from the James Brock family.

And finally the 1830 Census:

    • Valentine Brock is no longer listed
    • James Brock is same James we have followed from 1800 till now
    • Benjamin is the same Benjamin Brock from 1820
    • Squire Brock
    • Samuel Brock
      • Squire and Samuel are new families and again from the matrix included below the only family with boys this age is the James Brock family.

Hezekiah Brock was born 28 February 1827 in Chesterfield County. Right away we can eliminate Valentine, James Brock  and William Brock as the father of Hezekiah. That leaves as potential father, Benjamin, Squire and Samuel.

Let's take a look at these 3 families and see if we can place Hezekiah with one of the families.

First: Squire H. Brock
In the 1830 census Squire H. Brock family composition was:
1830‭ ‬Chesterfield,SC:
Squire BROCK
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬20-30‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬15-20‭;
‭We can see that Squire and his wife Rachel Parker only had two children, a daughter the oldest, Mary A. Brock and a son younger, James Albert Brock.
‭Many on-line trees have Hezekiah with this family because they think the middle H in Squire's name is Hezekiah. There is no proof found that shows what the "H" represents.

‭

Second: Samuel Brock
In the 1830 census Samuel Brock family composition was:
1830‭ ‬Chesterfield, SC:
Samuel BROCK
2‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬30-40‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬5-10‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬20-30
Samuel W. Brock, b. 1796 and his wife Martha/Marcia had two young sons and a daughter in this Census. The sons are of the proper age that one may have been Hezekiah; but, when we research the family we find that those two young sons are William P. Brock, Joel Washington Brock and the daughter is  Sarah Ann Brock.

So that leaves Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance. The 1830 Census shows the Benjamin Brock family as follows:

1830 Census
Benjamin BROCK
2‭ ‬male,‭ ‬0-5‭;
3‭ ‬male,‭ ‬5-10‭;
1‭ ‬male,‭ ‬40-50‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬0-5‭;
1‭ ‬female,‭ ‬40-50‭;
‭We see that Benjamin and his wife Temperance had 5 males borne before 1830 and two borne in the proper time slot for one of these boys to be Hezekiah and I say Hezekiah is the son of Benjamin and Temperance [LNU] Brock.

Many years ago, I was given some information suggesting the Hezekiah and an older brother had married sisters. I haven't totally proven or unproven this information; but,  Hezekiah Brock, my 2nd Great Grandfather married Sarah "Sallie" Morris; his oldest brother, Alsey Brock married Lucy Morris. Lucy Morris and Sarah Morris were sisters and daughters of Wiley Morris and Charity Short.

The mass destruction of pre Civil war public records and the deliberate acts of arson in the burning of the County Courthouse by the Union forces in early March 1865 is extremely distressing.

However, the remaining records and evidence including family folklore all points to one conclusion: Hezekiah Brock is the son of Benjamin Brock and Temperance, his wife. I just wish for one document supporting this conclusion.

Suit to Partition Estate Lands of Squire H. Brock

On 10 February 1888, Squire H. Brock passed away. His wife Rachel had passed away some 8 1/2 months earlier on 25 May 1887. Squire left 8 grown children to mourn his passing and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a farmer and land owner.

On 5 April 1897, ten years after his passing, his son, Samuel W. Brock brought suit in the Court of Common Pleas in the County of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina against James A. Brock et al praying that the real estate of Squire H. Brock deceased be sold for Partition. James Albert Brock was the oldest surviving son. The land (85 acres) was sold to Samuel W. Brock for $51.50.

But, what happened to the money? No probate record or any other equity record of any kind has been found detailing what happened to the proceeds of the Squire H. Brock partition. That includes all the personal and real property belonging to the estate. Chesterfield County Land Deed Book 15, pages 174-177 documents the selling of the land but it doesn't show what happened to the money.  The Land Deed is 4 pages but for the sake of brevity I have only included page 174 of Deed Book 15. The entire deed can be downloaded at: archiveviewer.uslandrecords.com/sc/chesterfield

The Death of Squire H. Brock

Squire H. Brock was born on 5 February 1805, a son of James Valentine Brock.

He married Rachel Parker, b.  27 May 1810. The parents of Rachel have not been proven but she is thought to be the sister of George A. Parker that married Easter Brock.

Squire and Rachel had a family of 8 sons and daughters equally divided. He was a very successful farmer.

Rachel Parker Brock died 25 May 1887. Squire H. Brock died on 10 February 1888. His death is recorded in the Squire James Rivers Family Bible. 1

Squire James Rivers was named after his grandfather Squire H. Brock. Squire James was the son of their firstborn daughter Mary A.Brock and William Alfred Rivers.  His mother did not survive the birth of her child and Squire H and Rachel took the baby in and cared for him. Then in August 1863, he lost his father, William Alfred Rivers, as a causality of the Civil War. In some censuses, Squire James is referred to as Squire James Brock.

Squire James Rivers married Emily Ellen White, daughter of Samuel P. White and Elizabeth Parsons on 18 April 1876. This date is recorded in the Family Bible: 2

Squire James Rivers, 24, Cheraw, SC and Emily Ellen White, 16, Chesterfield, SC were married at S. P. White on 13th day of April 1876 by Rev. A. B. Hursey.

Squire H. Brock is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

William's death certificate shows that he was married. No record has been found showing the name of William's wife.

He died on 24 Nov 1917 at the age of 64 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. Cause of death was shown to be nephritis (kidney failure). The informant on his NC death certificate was Peter Haley Brock.

Peter Haley was William’s 1st Cousin once removed. The information on his death certificate is incorrect. Squire H. Brock was never married to a Miss White. His first and only wife was Rachel Parker.4

Amanuensis Monday~Court Issued Land Deed to Samuel Washington Brock, 1897

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.
 His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Land Deed Issue by the Courts to Samuel W. Brock, 1897.1

On 10 February 1888, Squire H. Brock of Chesterfield County, South Carolina died. Before his passing, he sold, to his son John W. Brock, the 85 acres described within this deed as stated in paragraph 5 – “the same containing eight-five (85) acres more or less and for more full description see Deed from Squire H. Brock to John W. Brock and his bodily heirs bearing date 29 August 1885 [DB 8, pages 350-362]. After his passing, his eldest son, James Albert Brock, et al brought suit “praying that the real estate of Squire H Brock deceased be sold for Partition.”

At this point and time (1897) both Squire and John W. are deceased but I don’t understand how this 85 acres reverted to Squire H. Brock estate lands rather than going to the John W. Brock widow Abigail Sellers Brock.

This deed is the results of this suit and is the sale of the Squire H. Brock estate land to his son Samuel Washington Brock

Claim For Pension ~ Catherine Brock Davis

Catherine B. Davis, is my first cousin 4 times removed. She was born in March 1837 a daughter of Squire H. Brock and his wife Rachel Parker.[1] Catherine married William L. Davis, born 1834, on March 2, 1857 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[2]

William L. Davis enlisted into the Civil War on August 25, 1861, Chesterfield, SC. He joined with Capt. Kelley’s Company, Chesterfield Artillery.[3] His Civil War record shows his age as 27 years. he was issued a certificate of Disability and discharged February 28, 1962.  He suffered an attack of pneumonia which affected his health.[4]

After his discharge from the military, William and Catherine stayed put in Chesterfield until after their 4th child was born in 1869. By Census day 1870 they were in Duval County, Florida.[5] It’s quite possible they thought the weather was better suited for William‘s health than it was in the Carolinas.

William’s occupation is recorded as a laborer in 1870 and a fisherman in the 1880 Census.

On July 3rd, 1891, William L. Davis was killed by lightning near Woodtown on St. Johns River, 10 miles from Jacksonville in Duval County.[6] Catherine was left a widow with several small children.

On July 24, 1909, Catherine B. Davis filed a widow's pension application (# A03212) for service of William L. Davis, (J. C. Coit's Chesterfield Light Artillery); citing National Archives microfilm publication "M267, Civil War Service Records, South Carolina."[7]

The pension application was approved on 9 September 1909 and Catherine was awarded a total of $120 per annum or $10.00 monthly.

This pension record contained a tremendous amount of genealogical information about both William and Catherine Brock Davis.

They were married for 34 years 4 months and 1 day. They had a total of seven (7) children; five sons and two daughters.

Catherine Brock Davis died July 2, 1917 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.[8] She is buried in the Old Jacksonville City Cemetery.[9]

Death of Squire H. Brock

Squire H. Brock is my 3rd great grand Uncle.

Squire was born 5 Feb 1805.[1] While a specific document has not been found naming his parents; indirect evidence indicates he was a son of James Brock who died 15 Dec 1847 in a tragic house fire.

Squire married Rachel Parker and they had 8 children; 4 daughters and 4 sons.

A land deed in Book 8, page 360-361 at the Chesterfield County Courthouse, Register of Deeds shows that Squire H. Brock transferred land to John W. Brock on 29 August 1885. Squire’s  wife relinquished her rights and claim to dower to the transfer of this property.[2]

Squire H. Brock died in 1888. There are only two known sources for his death date of February 10, 1888. Those two sources are his tombstone in the Brock Cemetery and  the Squire J. Rivers Family Bible. [3[[4]

Squire’s daughter Mary A. Brock, b. 1829 married William Alfred Rivers about June 1851 and they had one son – Squire James Rivers, on 13 March 1852. Mary A. Brock Rivers died as a result of this childbirth on 25 March 1852. William Alfred Rivers died 17 August 1863 at Petersburg, Virginia.[5]  The loss of his Mother, at birth, and his Father, in the Civil War, resulted in Squire James being  raised by his grandparents Squire H. & Rachel Brock and his use of the Brock surname as a young lad.
