Sunday’s Obituary~Mrs. Mary A. Purvis Johnson
Mary Angeline Purvis was the daughter of John Jackson Purvis and Henrietta Welsh. She was the second born of 10 children with 2 brothers and 7 sisters.
Mary Angeline Purvis was born on 11 March 1871. She married Griffeth Johnson who passed away 4 short years later. They had one child, a daughter, born October 1897. Since Griffeth is not listed with Mary Angeline and her daughter in the 1900 Census it is believed that Griffeth Johnson passed away prior to 1900.
Mrs. Mary Johnson
Mrs. Mary Johnson, of near Ruby, died last Wednesday and was buried Thursday at Cross Roads cemetery. The Rev. A. B. Smith conducted the funeral service.
Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Purvis, both of whom died some years ago. She married Mr. Griffeth Johnson of Hartsville, S. C. , and after 4 years of companionship Mr. Johnson died leaving her with one child. She then made her home with her brother Rev. J. D. Purvis, of Ruby, where she stayed until her death.
Mrs. Johnson was 47 years of age and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. She joined the church in early life, and had lived a consistent Christian life ever since and was always faithful to her Christian duties. She leaves one daughter, seven sisters and two brothers and a host of friends to mourn her death.

It’s Family Time~John H. and Sarah Sellers Eddins
The 1870 census for Cabarrus County, North Carolina shows Sarah Sellers Eddins, age 32, as the spouse of John H. Eddins.
Sarah and John’s first born a daughter named Susan was born in 1861 so John and Sarah were most likely married sometime after the census was taken in 1860. At the time of the census enumeration in July of 1860, John H. Eddins, was a single man in the household of his parents, John Riley Eddins and Mary Sarah Martin.
John enlisted into the Civil War on 22 July 1861 with Company I, North Carolina 7th Infantry Regiment. With the birth of their first child in 1861, John and Sarah were already married when John left home for the War.
John and Sarah Sellers Eddins had 5 children before his untimely death which occurred sometime around July 1872 at the age of 36.
Their children were:
i. Susan E. Eddins was born about 1861 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
ii. William Edward Eddins, born 19 Feb 1866, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Mary Griggs; died 27 Dec 1941.
iii. Edward Rainey "Dock" Eddins, born 28 Sep 1866, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; married Sarah F. Griggs; married Patsy Short; died 9 Oct 1953, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.
iv. John F. Eddins was born about Jan 1870 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He died before 1880.
Civil records related to John H. Eddins and Sarah Sellers are very limited. I have found no records of their death and only Census and Civil war records related to John’s age. He was 36 when he enlisted on 22 July 1861, making his birth year to be 1825. But, in the 1850 census he was listed as age 20. Sarah's age also varied considerably in the census sometimes only aging 5 years in a 10 year period.
Sarah Sellers Eddins is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

Petition for Guardianship~Jonah A. Teator, Ransom A. Teator, James L. Teator and George W. Teator
In late 1857 to early 1858, sometime before 20 May 1858 Martin A. Teeter died. Martin was a single parent with 8 children; 4 of them under the age of twenty-one until he remarried on 20 April 1856.
Martin had lost his first wife back on 30 September 1853 with the birth of his eight child a son named George Washington Teeter.
In Court on 20 May 1858, Brice McIver a Uncle of the minor children - Jonah A. Teator, Ransom A. Teator, James L. Teator and George W. Teator – petition the Court for the Guardianship of the minor children.
Mary Ann ‘Polly’ Petray was the wife of Brice McEver. She was also a sister to Sarah Jane ‘Sallie’ Petray Teeter the mother of the four minor children.
Tragically, the children Uncle, Brice McEver, died of pneumonia in December 1860. Mary Ann continued to care for the children until they left home.

Irena Catherine Hancock married Mark S. Rivers in February 1840, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Shortly after their marriage, Mark and Catherine migrated to Jones County, Mississippi to join with his sisters Ameilia and Elizabeth and their husbands Moses Holyfield and John Dryman.
Jones County, Mississippi Court records shows that Mark and Catherine were divorced on 19 Apr 1859. yet, in 1860, Mark and Catherine were found in the Censuses still living together in the same house.

The next surprise was the marriage above of Catherine Rivers to George S. Fagan on 08 Sep 1879 in Choctaw County, Alabama.
Mark and Catherine were divorced in April 1859; but, it obvious from available records that they remained friends and cohabitated up until January 1868.

Sometime finding these small snippets of known ancestors can be very frustrating. There is no doubt that this Valentine Brock is my ancestor. The problem becomes - Where does he belong or place in the Brock lineage.
This Land Deed and 3 other small snippets clearly places a Valentine Brock in both Anson County, NC and Chesterfield County, SC in the early 1800’s.

Possible Record Matches in Purvis-Johns Family Tree~Charles Dorr/Dry
Received an e-mail today stating that I have 5 new hints available for my on-line tree. Three of these hints were photo hints relating to my Dry ancestors.
To my surprise one hint was a photo from page 5 of the Rowan County, NC estate file for Christoph[er] Rintelmann dated 1779. My thanks goes out to A. Vint who found this document. I have displayed this document in 2 parts; the heading is on page 4 and Charles Dorr, my 5th Great Grandfather is listed on page 5 of 13. I’m not fluent in German so accept my apologies for not translating the document.
The second line on Image 2 is the listing for Charles Dorr.
This places Charles Dorr in Rowan County, NC in the year 1779 and at that time still using the German spelling of his surname. Sometime after this date the surname was anglicized from the German Dorr to Dry.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Delayed Birth Certificate~Charlton Rufus Sellers
There’s a very interesting database on Ancestry (paid site) containing Delayed Birth Record (1766-1900) and Birth Record for the City of Charleston, South Carolina, Birth Records, 1877-1901.
I have found birth records, such as the one below, for many of my ancestors born between 1880 and 1910 in this database. Not all of these records are typed, many are hand written and some contains mistakes such as the one posted in this blog which I will be discussing later. On the other hand I found not only the birth date for Charlton but that his middle name was Rufus.
The record (left) is for my 3rd Cousin twice removed. His full name was: Charlton Rufus Sellers
Born: 15 June 1896
Place: Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina
Parents: James Phillip Sellers and Eliza Tucker (Father’s name is WRONG)
Correction:
His Father was: James Preston Sellers and mother Mary Eliza Tucker.
W. C. Sellers the informant is William C. Sellers, Charlton’s older brother. In 1956, Charlton was 60 years old when application was made and it most likely was preparation work to secure his Social Security at retirement age.
Charlton Rufus Sellers is my 3rd Cousin twice removed.

William Alfred Rivers, born about 1828, was the son of William Rivers and his wife Elizabeth ‘Betsy” Rivers. In June 1851, he married Mary A. Brock, age 22, daughter of Squire H. Brock and Rachel Parker.
Mary A. Brock Rivers died with the birth of her child, a son, Squire James Rivers who did survive.
Being a farmer and caring for a small baby just wasn’t practical. In 1853, William Alfred Rivers married a young lady named Eliza Ann Turnage, age 23, daughter of William Turnage and Lavina Thompson.
By the start of the Civil War William and Eliza had 5 additional children; 4 daughters and a son.
I haven’t found a Civil War Record for William Alfred but an entry in “Broken Fortunes’ shows that – W. A. Rivers, Private, Palmetto Sharpshooters (P.S.S.) died on 17 August 1863 at Petersburg, Virginia. The fact that his estate was probated shortly after the war points to his death during the war or shortly thereafter.

Sunday’s Obituary~Winnie Susanna Hendrick Rivers
Obituary
Mrs. Rivers had suffered a stroke of paralysis on Friday, which was followed by a second stroke on Monday. She failed to rally from the second stroke and passed away on Tuesday.
This obituary was followed with one from her church family that ran in the June 22, 1916 edition of The Chesterfield Advertiser.
On May 16, 1916, at 5:30 PM the death angel visited the home of Mr. Charlie Rivers and removed from their midst a devoted wife and a loving mother (Winnie Susanna Hendrick Rivers). Two weeks before her death she suffered a stroke of paralysis in Macedonia church of which she was a member. She was converted and joined Elizabeth Baptist Church at 13 years of age. She was a Miss Hendrick before she married to Mr. Charlie Rivers, at the age of 20 years. To this union nine children were born of whom all are living, as follows: Mrs. H. G. McBride, Messrs. Carl, Frank, Walter, Roy, John, Harley and Misses. Bertha and Rillie Rivers. She was loved by all who knew her. Her life was one worthy of imitation, one of noble character. She was a devoted Christian and loyal to her church and to God, always doing what she thought would please her Maker. She died at 48 years of age and was laid to rest in Hopewell cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.D. Harrelson, of Marion county. (Resolved....) Written by her church.

Dempsey J. Huneycutt~In Bankruptcy, 1868
NOTICE OF BANKRUPTCY
UNITED STATES} In Bankruptcy
For the Cape fear District of }
North Carolina}
In the matter of Dempsey J. Huneycut, &
Bankrupt—ss
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, THAT ON the 13th day of April, A. D. 1868, a warrant in Bankruptcy was issued out of the District Court of the United States for the Cape fear District of North Carolina, against the estates of D. J. HUNEYCUTT, of Winchester, Union County, and State of North Carolina , who has been adjudged a bankrupt on his own petition; that the payment of any debts, and delivery of any property belonging to such bankrupt, to him for his use, and the transfer of any property by him are forbidden by law; that a meeting of the creditors of the said Bankrupt to prove their debts, and to choose one or more assignees of his estate, will be held at a Court of bankruptcy, to be holden at Charlotte, North Carolina, before A. W. Shaffer, Esq., Register in Bankruptcy for said District on the 6th day of May, A. D. 1868, at 10 o’clock, A. M.
DANIEL R. GOODLOE,
U. S. Marshal as Messenger.
E. B. FULLINGS U.S. Deputy Marshal.
April 15, 1868 144-1aw3wpd.
In my genealogical database I have four Dempsey Huneycutt of which two carries the middle initial of “J” in their name. The first Dempsey J. Huneycutt was born in 1832 and was killed in 1853. The second, is Dempsey J. Huneycutt, born 1813, son of Dempsey Huneycutt and his wife Barbary.
This Dempsey J. was married to Tabitha Helms and died 25 December 1876.
The above 1868 Bankruptcy notice contains this statement “who has been adjudged a bankrupt on his own petition.” This statement leaves me to believe that Dempsey J. Huneycutt petition the courts himself for this bankruptcy action. Dempsey with Tabitha is the only Dempsey found during this time period.
Dempsey J. Huneycutt married Tabitha Helms on 3 September 1835. They had eleven children. Tabitha Huneycutt died in November 1875 and Dempsey J. died in December 1876.
