Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #582 – Hiram Kenneth Jenkins, Sr.

Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folder from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed by the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

Kinneth Jenkins 1
Probate Folder #582

You never know what you will find in a Probate folder but I do believe this one contains the least information I have ever found within a folder. Hiram Jenkins died in 1892 and that was 126 years ago. It is quite possible that at one time this folder contained additional information that has been since removed from the folder. On the other hand this may be all that was ever in the folder.

State of South Carolina}   Court
County of Chesterfield}  of Probate
The petition of E. A. Jenkins shows to this Court
I. That Kinneth Jenkins a citizen of the County of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid died intestate on the 27th of Dec. 1893 leaving a small personal estate amounting to about one hundred Dollars upon which Administration will be necessary in order that the same may be settled.
II. That your petitioner is the wife of deceased and is first entitled.
Wherefore your petitioner prays for letters of Administration upon the estate of said intestate.
                                                                              E. A. X her mark Jenkins
Witness: D. W. Coker

Eliza A. (Jordan) Jenkins was granted letters to administer the estate of her husband Hiram Kenneth Jenkins, Sr.

Image 616 above shows that Hiram died 27 Dec 1893. The letter is in error most likely made because the estate was administered at the beginning of a new year. His tombstone contains what I believe is the correct death date recorded as 27 December 1892.

It’s Family Time~The Stella Deese Family

Its-Family-Time2

Stella Deese was born 11 March 1895, a daughter of  Henry Harrison Deese, Sr. and his wife Nellie Isabella Huneycutt. She was their 9th child; she had two older sisters, the rest were brothers.

At age 21, Stella married Abraham Lincoln Key, age 22 on 11 March 1916 in Davidson County, North Carolina.  I would love to hear the story of how they met.

To this union were born four children 3 sons and a daughter. Large gaps in the age of these children suggest there were children lost at birth or in infancy.

Census records show that Abraham worked in the Cotton Mills as a “Speeder Hand”. Stella remained home taking care of the children.

Sadly, Abraham L. Key died of a heart attack at the young age of 54 on 24 September 1947. Stella survived another 43 years passing away on 19 August 1990. Both are buried near her parents in the Morven Cemetery

Stella Deese is my 1st Cousin twice removed.

He was a farmer, like his father and most other men of that time. About 1853, John Allen married Nancy Jane Starnes, daughter of Nathan T. Starnes and Margaret F. Myers.

In 1860, the family can be found in Stanly County with two children in the household.

John_Crayton_1860_Census

Its-Family-Time2

Stanmore Sellers was born 1 January 1898, a son of  James Arnold ‘Buck’ Sellers and Nancy Jane ‘Jennie’ Johnson.

He was named after his maternal Grandfather Stanmore P. Johnson.

On the night of 28 May 1933, Stanmore and Glenn Adams were traveling on Highway #1 near McBee, SC when his car left the road, ran down an embankment and rolled several times. Stanmore Sellers was killed in the accident; Glenn Adams survived.

Stanmore Sellers was 35 years of age. He was survived by his mother, Nancy Jane ‘Jennie’ Johnson Sellers Moore, and sister, Elizabeth Jane Sellers Huneycutt. Stanmore had another sister, Mary Bell Sellers that I have not been able to locate after the 1920 Census.

Amanuensis Monday~Land Deed, Anna J. Douglass and Eliza Odom to William J. Odom.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County Land Deed, Anna J. Douglass and Eliza Odom to William J. Odom.

My research, reading, and analysis of this land deed suggest that John Dwight Odom and Sarah Ann Freeman had three children. Anna Jane Douglass, Eliza Odom, and William John Odom.

Sarah Ann Freeman Odom died on 21 June 1882. John Dwight Odom passed away on 13 May 1889. This land deed (10:423-425) was recorded on 11 September 1890.

It’s clear that Anna Jane (Odom) Douglass and Eliza Odom are conveying their interests in their Father’s property to their brother William John Odom.

However, John Dwight Odom and Sarah Ann Freeman were married about 1856. I have found no record in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 Census that lists a daughter Eliza Odom. Anna Jane is listed in 1860 and 1870;  William John is listed in 1870 and  1880.

The Odom children are my 2nd Cousins 3 times removed.

Chesterfield County SC~Estate Folder #601 – F. P. Taylor

Each week, on Sunday, I will select an Estate Folder from the Estate files of Chesterfield County and discuss its contents. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

Probate -Franklin P. Taylor

The estate folder (#601) for Franklin Pierce Taylor contains a copy of his Last Will and Testament, a codicil to the will and an inventory of his estate.

His estate was left to his widow, Cornelia E. Rivers Taylor and his three sons, James Oscar, Edwin R. and Karl F. Taylor.

Sadly, Cornelia and Edwin R. passed away before the estate was settled. Edwin R. passed away in August 1899 and his Mother, Cornelia E. died 1 March 1906.  Then in August 1913, Karl Franklin passed away leaving James Oscar the sole surviving heir to the estate of his father, Franklin Pierce Taylor.
