52 Cousins~Daniel Earnhart

Daniel Earnhart was born 13th February 1809, a son of George Earnhart and his wife Margaret Keppel. Daniel was the 5th of 6 children born to George and Margaret. He had two brothers and three sisters. Daniel was born in Rowan County, North Carolina.

At some point between 8 August 1807 and 1810 George and Margaret moved their family from Rowan County, NC to Bedford County, Tennessee. George Earnhart and his 3 sons, Benjamin, Daniel and James were farmers.

In or about 1831, Daniel Earnhart married Martha Ann [LNU]. Martha Ann's maiden name is unknown though some believe her to be a “LENTZ.” No proof has been found to determine her actual surname. No marriage notices or licensee has been found for Daniel and Martha. Daniel and Martha Ann marriage date is based on the birth of their first-born child, Malinda J., born May 1833.

Shortly, after their marriage, George Earnhart, father of Daniel, deeded his son a tract of farmland containing by estimation one hundred and Seventy Eight Acres. The deed contained an agreement by Daniel to maintain the said George and his wife during their Natural lives.

Twenty-five years after the birth of her last child, Martha Ann Earnhart passed away between 1870 and 1880. No obituary, tombstone or record of her death has been found.

The death of Martha Ann, Daniel married Ann Kimmons between the death of Martha and 1880 when the Census was enumerated.

Ann Kimmons was born in Feb 1854 in Tennessee. No record of her marriage has been found.  Sadly, the marriage was short lived with Daniel Everhart passing away before 2 April 1883.

After Daniel's death Ann Kimmons married William Kimmons on 15 Mar 1885 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

She died on 14 Jan 1925 at the age of 70 and was buried on 15 Jan 1925 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

52 Cousins~Robert Warner Kepley

Robert Warner Kepley was born 21 April 1839, a son of John Peter Kepley and Rachel Simison. He was the eighth of nine children born to this couple. Robert Warner had 3 brother and 5 sisters. In 1860, Robert gave his occupation as a day laborer.

On 17 March 1859, Robert Warner Kepley married Sarah Louvina Holshouser, daughter of Henry Holshouser, if the informant for her NC death is correct. [Surname also spelled, Holtshouser].

Between March 1859 and 8 July 1870 Robert and Sarah conceived four children. During that time Robert Warner Kepley was involved in an incident that caused him to be incarcerated into the NC Penitentiary as a Convict. Presently, I have not uncovered why he was imprisoned.

Robert Warner Kepley and Sarah Louvina Holshouser had the following children:

  1. Lewis Alexander C. Kepley, born 1860; married Margaret Elmina Waller, 18 May 1879, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Elizabeth J. Bean, 29 Mar 1908, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 15 Sep 1926, Providence, Rowan, North Carolina.

  2. Mary Jane Kepley, born 9 Apr 1863, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Daniel H. Sides; died 31 Jan 1928.

  3. Rosa Clementine Kepley, born 15 Oct 1864, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Samuel Green Lowder, 29 Jun 1902, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 24 Mar 1958, Stanly County, North Carolina.

  4. George Calvin Kepley, born 13 Apr 1867, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Mattie Joan Shoe, 12 Jun 1892, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 15 Dec 1957, Gold Hill Township, Cabarrus, North Carolina.

Sadly, Robert Warner Kepley, age 33, died 24 Jul 1872 while imprisoned.

Sarah Louvina Holshouser Kepley raised her four children, never remarrying. Sarah died 28 April 1918 in Rowan County, North Carolina. She was buried in the Pine Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina.

NOTE: The posted birth and death dates for Robert Warner Kepley are from his recently created FindAGrave Memeorial. These two dates are questionable at the best and DO NOT meet the Criteria for The Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). The 1850 Census shows him age 11, born abt 1839. The 1880 Census shows Sarah Louvina Holhouserr a widow. Consider his birth and death dates as questionable until fully proven.

With today’s posting I have a real mystery in the family that I was completely unaware of just weeks ago.

Comments were left on a posting to my blog post https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2022/06/mrs-rowena-drye-widow-of-col-george-drye.html. The young lady wanted to know how “John M. and Sophronia S. (Maiden name unknown) Speed were related to George and Rowena (Maiden name unknown) Dry were related.

John M. Speed was born abt 1824 and died before December 1875. Sophronia S. (LNU) Speed applied for a Civil War Widows pension on 2 December 1875; Application#223713.

It is not known when John M. Speed and Sophronia S. (LNU) Speed were married. Their only child, Elizabeth, was born in 1844 and in the 1900 Census her mother reported that she was deceased.

On 13 June 1900, Sophronia S. (LNU) Speed wrote her Last Will and Testament.

Sixth: I give all my wearing apparel to Maria Milligan.

Seventh: The remainder of my Estate of whatever description is to go into the hands of my Executor to be by him sold and the proceeds used by him without accountability in the paying of my debts, paying for my said lot in the said Cemetery, and the erection of my tombstone, and keeping my grave in repair.

I appoint R. C. Bradley my executor and request that he be permitted to Execute bond without Security.

Let's review for a minute: A nephew is the son of your brother or sister, while a niece is the daughter of your brother or sisteressentially, they are the children of your siblings, making you their aunt or uncle.

If John and Stephen are, in fact, a nephew of Sophronia S Speed. Then, either George DRY or Rowena D. (LNU) is a sister of Sophronia S Speed. However, Amanda C. Bradley, wife of Richard Cobb Bradley is referred to as a Niece also.  But, Amanda is the daughter of John F. Dry and granddaughter of Col. George Dry and Rowena D. (LNU) Dry. That would make Sophronia S Speed to be the daughter of Col. George Dry and Rowena D. (LNU) Dry.

Maria Milligan was Maria Hardesty before her marriage to Albert Milligan in Jan 1852, I have not found a blood connection to Sophronia S. Speed.

I suspect that Rowena D. Dry, wife and widow, of George Dry is the key to this mystery.

If you have any information on the parents of Sophronia S. Speed, I would love to hear from you.
