Another Rivers Resource~Leon Madison Rivers Collection

There's another Rivers Resource right here in South Carolina that probably no-one other than a few people even knows of it’s existence.

The Collection is the LEON MADISON RIVERS GENEALOGICAL COLLECTION held by the SOUTH CAROLINIANA LIBRARY, Columbia, South Carolina.

The last time that I sat and reviewed this file was about eight years ago. The Collection consists of at least 4 boxes and many folders. I would suggest that any researcher desiring to look at these files, start with Box 1, Folder 75. I would advise making pre-arrangements with the Library to access this file.

Leon Madison Rivers was active in his research about the same time that Minnie Sanders Rivers was active in her research in Chesterfield in the mid to late 1920’s.

This is just a small sample of data extracted from these files. There are several Family History Booklets within the files; I think I recall looking at one on the Frederick Rivers - Cynthia Knight Family of Alabama.

One caveat about these files. The data consists of correspondence between Leon M. Rivers and the various Rivers families. Many original letters in files and data pages provided by the correspondent. Very little proof that the data provided is accurate and complete.  A great starting point; just verify any formation that you find.

Make a list of the data you are interested in and the Library will copy those pages and mail the data to you.

Happy Hunting!!!

Brock, Holifield, Howell, Rivers and others of Chesterfield, SC to Mississippi

While researching the Rivers of Chesterfield County (my 3rd and 4th Great Grand Mothers were of the Rivers Lineage) I found that many of the Rivers and other families migrated from Chesterfield into Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

I found Dempsey Rivers born 1797 and his Brother Michael in both the SC censuses for Chesterfield and later in the Chattooga County records of Georgia.

In Clarke County, Alabama I found the marriage of Henry Howell and Rebecca Purvis, the marriage of John P. Purvis and Mary Parks, land deeds by Gilbert Johnson Purvis, son of Gilbert Purvis and Effica Howell and the death of John Purvis in 1825, quite possibly the husband of Vicey Purvis of Chesterfield.

Continuing on to Mississippi, we find John H. Brown and his wife Sarah Rivers in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. John died there in 1855 and his probate folder is on file at the courthouse. After his death, Sarah moved in with her son, Epps Rivers  Brown and his wife Dorinda Adair of Union County, Arkansas. Epps and Dorinda were married in Lauderdale County where Dorinda’s father Zadok Adair had vast land holdings.

Over in Hinds and Rankin Counties, we find the families of Joseph, James F., Gilbert and many other Purvis families, The Howell, the Brock, the Holifield's all whom  originated in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. There is also James Purvis and Elizabeth Brock, William Brock and his wife Charlotte.

Moses S.  Holiyfield, Sr. found in the 1820 Anson County and 1830 Chesterfield Census married Emilia ‘Milly’ Rivers, quite possibly the daughter of Mark Rivers and Annie Parker, and took her off with this group to Mississippi. Her brother Mark marred Irena Catherine Hancock in February 1840 and moved her to Rankin County Mississippi. Their brother Luke Rivers, remained in Chesterfield (see 1850 census) and then in the late 1850‘s took his wife and family, moving to Jones County, Ms to be close to his siblings.

Harlan ‘Dan’ Daniel, late of Mississippi , said that the Holifield's, Old man John H. Holifield, once owned all the land where present day Laurel, Mississippi is now located. In 1972, Daniel compiled a genealogical history entitled "Two Hundred and One Years" consisting of 219 pages of the John H. Holifield family. Mr. Daniel in his book claims that Moses and Milly Rivers Holifield arrived in Jones county, Mississippi in the year 1836.

Mark and Irena Catherine were married in SC (Feb. 1840) and join the families shortly after their marriage. No children were born of this union.

The Jones County census for 1840 shows Moses Sr. was living on the Talahala Creek on 160 acres of land.
1840 CENSUS: Jones County, Mississippi; Roll: 214; Image: 620; Family History Library Film: 0014840, Page: 305; Line 1; 1 Male, Under age 5 [James]; 1 Male, age 6-9 [Moses, Jr.  & Jonathan]; 1 Male, age 10-14 [Mark]; 2 Males, age 15-19 [John C, Ray]; 1 Male, age 20-29 [Joshua]; 1 Male, age 40-49 [Moses]; 1 Female, age 10-14 [Charlotte] and 1 Females, age 40-49 [Milly].

Milly Rivers Holifield died between 1860 and 1865. After Milly’s death, Moses Sr. married Nancy J. McCary Sumerall. Two sons and a daughter were born to this union. Moses Holifield died after 1872 where he can be found on the Jones County 1872 tax list. No tombstones have been found for Moses or Millie Holifield.

Surname Saturday~William L. Brown and Sinai Brown, Are They Siblings?

In the mid-1800’s (1830-1880) there were two distinct “BROWN” families living in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. One was the family of JOHN H. BROWN and his wife, SARAH RIVERS BROWN (my ancestors).  The other family were descendants of a  early settler named George Brown.

In my research I have found that siblings in these two families are often mixed up when in fact these families are two distinct families and are unrelated.

Take for instance this paragraph from “The First Hundred Years of the Pine Springs Community of Lauderdale County, Mississippi”, page 22.

John & Sarah

John and Sarah had more children born in Alabama before they moved to Jasper County, Mississippi and then, later on, to Lauderdale County. Not all of the names of their large family are known. They had a daughter Sinai who married Thomas J. Hamrick in 1834 in Alabama. It is thought that Henry, born 1821, and Stephen P., born 1823, were their sons, but this has not been proven. 1

The most obvious error I have found is that William L. Brown and Sinai Brown are siblings. I have found NO EVIDENCE that they ARE SIBLINGS and are only related through their marriage into the Hamrick Family.

William Lafayette Brown married Martha Hamrick, on 25 Dec 1828 and Sinai Brown married Thomas Jefferson Hamrick, 18 Nov 1834. Martha Hamrick and Thomas Jefferson Hamrick are siblings and children of Capt. John C. Hamrick and Katherine Myers.

Sinai Brown was born abt 1817 in Alabama. She married Thomas Jefferson on 18 November 1834 in Monroe County Alabama, Marriage Book “A”, page 12. Her parents are unknown. 2

William Lafayette  Brown was born about 1807 in Georgia to John H. Brown and Sarah Rivers Brown.  He was their second born son.

John H. Brown died 4 September 1855 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi and his estate was probated there. John and Sarah had the following known children: 3
  • Frederick Epps Brown, b. abt 1802
  • William Lafayette Brown, b. abt 1807
  • Epps Rivers Brown , b. abt 1810
  • John R. Brown, b. Oct 1813
  • Martha Brown, b. abt 1818
  • Henry Epps Brown, b. 22 May 1820
  • Stephen Brown, b. abt 1823
  • Nancy Brown, abt 1831
  • James L.  “Jim” Brown, b. abt 1838
When John H. Brown passed away in 1855 his estate named the following survivors/heirs:4

John H. Brown Heirs
  • Frederick Brown
  • William Brown
  • E. R. Brown
  • Heirs of John R. Brown – Martha, Nancy, Catherine, Thomas, Timothy
[Note: John R. Brown and his wife Elizabeth Pigford both died unexpectedly in the   early 1850’s and left their 5 minor children orphans. Their oldest daughter was already married.]
  • Martha Matthews
  • Stephen Brown
  • J. L. Brown
  • Martha L. Smith
  • Henry Brown
Note: Clearly one of the Martha’s listed above is an error and should have read Nancy.

The heirs/distributee list for John H. Brown Estate matches the known children of John H. Brown. Sinai Brown Hamrick died about 1846 leaving her husband and 6 children. If she was the daughter of John and Sarah there would have been a line in the heirs/distributee list that read – “Heirs of Sinai Brown Hamrick”;  the absence of this line clearly indicates there was no relationship between the John H. Brown family and Sinai Brown.

Conclusion:
It is the opinion of this researcher that there is no sibling link between William Lafayette Brown and Sinai Brown. Sinai Brown’s parents are currently unknown. John Wesley Brown, Jr. and his wife Eliza Davison had a daughter named Sinai born 18 Mar 1841. Is Sinia Brown born 1817 a sister to John Wesley Brown, Jr. and the Aunt of Sinai Brown born in 1841?

If you have any information on the parents of Sinai Brown, born about 1817 in Alabama, please contact me.

Persistence = Results ~ Finding The Mother of Ruby Price

Two surnames that I have done extensive research on for the past 37 years are Rivers & Brock. I have chased these two surnames all over the Southeast.

Around November 2007 I received this request:

Have you any knowledge of a Rivers descendant named Hattie McCann, (unfortunately this is her married name, and I don't know her maiden name, her husband was Henry). She was the mother of "Ruby Price", my father's cousin that he went to live with (her and her husband, Olen Price) in Arkansas, after the 1936 death of his mother, Lucy Ellen Brock Rivers. I didn't find any reference to her in your book, but wondered if you have ever heard of any of them?[1]

This seems like such a simple request.

Find Hattie LNU[2] married to Henry McCann with a daughter Ruby that married Olen Price.
I’m not a professional genealogist; but, since this was related to two of my lines I decided to take a look and see what I could find.

My early attempts back in 2007 were not very fruitful. The only Olen Price I found was age 2 in the 1930 Census.[3]

The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) showed a Ruby Price that passed away on 6 April 2001 in Flint, Smith County, Texas. So I continue my look for Hattie McCann and Olen Price.

In late 2007, I sent my friend this comment

“I want Ruby's death Certificate to CONFIRM her parents. My gut feeling is that something is AMISS here. I've looked from 1880 to 1930 for a Henry McCann with a wife Hattie and have come up empty.”[4]

I received this note back:

“One other thing I do know, Ruby was living with her daughter in Tyler, Texas a few years before she died. The daughter's name was Mary Helen Smith (not sure if this was her last name), she had a Christmas store in Tyler, named "The Christmas Store". I went to her home to see Ruby a few times in the 1990's with my mother.”[5]

Off and on through the past 5 1/2 years I would take another look for Henry McCann with a wife Hattie and daughter Ruby. Still with no success.

Then last week I was looking at Arkansas marriage on FamilySearch and entered O. Price for the male and Ruby for the bride and lo and behold this record appeared.[6]

clip_image001

The record is for O. J. Price married to Ruby Bivens in Arkansas. The time and place is correct so I decided to follow this trail. Since I had already plowed through all the censuses for O. J. Price back in 2007 and 2008 I decided to see where Ruby Bivens would take me.

Ruby Bivens is not Ruby McCann but I realized over time that names can be mixed up, forgotten and other wise mangled. So I entered, Ruby Bivens with spouse O. J. Price living in Arkansas, into the search block on Ancestry and came up with this family tree:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14084816/person/54011174?ssrc=

You can see that this family tree has some of the same names and information that I was given. Primarily that Ruby Bivens is the Daughter of Harry McCann and Hattie McCann.

clip_image002

The other piece of information that I didn’t have is the full given name of Ruby’s husband – Orris Jester Price. Remember I had Olen Price as his given name.

Entering Orris Jester Price into Ancestry took me to the 1940 Census entry for Orris and Ruby where they are listed with their two children; names I already had from my friend.
Orris J Price, age 39
Ruby O Price, age 34
Lamar Price, age 14
Mary Helen Price, age 7

Source Citation: Year: 1940; Census Place: Norphlet, Union,Arkansas; Roll: T627_178; Page: 5B; Enumeration District: 70-38.[7]

Further research determined that Ruby Bivens parents ARE NOT Harry and Hattie McCann.

Ruby Bivens is the daughter of Egbert Jesse Bivens and Mary Hattie Brock and since her mother was a BROCK and I am a direct BROCK descendant I found Ruby hiding among the thousands of names in my database with her parents.

While I have not found a Marriage License for  Harry McCann to Mary Hattie Brock Blevins it's possible and very probable that Mary Hattie Brock Blevins remarried after the death of her husband Egbert J. Blevins on 13 August 1922. The 1940 Census data indicates a high probability of this happening.

1940 CENSUS: El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas; Roll: T627_177; Enumeration District: 70-8; Page 3A/108A (stamped); Line 22, Household #64; Henry McCANN, male, age 65, born in TX and Hattie McCANN, Wife , age 64, born in SC.
Tombstone Reading from Woodlawn Cemetery [8]

The Bivens, Rivers Lisenby and others left Chesterfield County, SC and moved to Arkansas sometime around the early 1890’s.

Lucy Ellen Brock, the Aunt of Ruby Bivens, is also the Sister to Mary Hattie Brock. Lucy Ellen Brock married Emerson Coit Rivers and they are the grandparents of my friend who ask me to find the connection to her line.

My friend and Ruby Price are 1st cousins once removed. Their common ancestor is their great grandparents Eli W. Brock and Mary Jane White of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

I learned from this exercise that the Internet is an every changing entity with new information being added daily. The thought process of the human mind varies from day to day and tomorrow you might just try something you didn't think of today or yesterday. The moral of the story is to never give up; keep revisiting those tough genealogical problems on a routine basis. Now if I can just get this to work with my William A. Purvis brick wall.

Happy Hunting to you All!

There is no Divorce Records on-line prior to 1923 so they were not checked. This adds two more names to the mix – Julia A. Brown and Julie E. Bradley.
Is Julie A. Brown the daughter of Epps R. Brown and if she is why isn’t she listed in the Census;  or maybe one of the nicknames used is Julie nickname – Lizzie, Donnie or Nannie?
Remember the booklet by Minnie ,; it say that Dora married Joel Goodwin & Jim Buckner
171.   Dora; b.__________;d.__________; m. (1) Joel Goodwin; m. (2) Jim Buckner. Lived in Western Texas.

The marriage License say that Joel Goodwin married Julia A. Brown , born 1853 in Union County, Arkansas on the 25 February 1879 in Ouachita County, Arkansas.[1]

Jim Buckner married married Julia E. Bradley, born 1855 in Union County, Arkansas on the 26 March 1880 in Union County, Arkansas.[2]

In the 1900 Coryell County, Texas Census; [3]James Buckner lists his wife as  Elizabeth J. Buckner, age 46, born Mar 1853 in Arkansas – Married 6 years (1894)

By 1920 the Couple is back to James and Julia; Nolan County, Texas.[4]

Then in 1930 Nolan, Texas, the last census they are listed in, the Couple is listed as James B.  & Julia A.[5]

Julia – Elizabeth-Donnie – dies first and her death certificate [6]shows her husband to be the wife of J. M. Buckner and her parents to be E. R. Rivers and Dorinda Adair.

I still do not know which of Epps Rivers Brown daughters this is; but, I am clearly convinced that all these ladies are just one lady with multiple names.  I have networked with several other individuals closer associated with this line than I am and was told by one of these individuals that the daughter had to get out of Arkansas quick due to some sort of trouble in 1893-1894.

While this is hearsay the multiple uses of names lend some credence to the story. The date of the trouble story (1893-1894) coincide with the reported years of marriage (6)(1894) in the 1900 Census; so is Elizabeth J. Bucker  full name is Elizabeth Julie Brown Buckner? There was a Lizzie Brown but census shows her to be born in 1859 and it is reported she died young.  Only Nannie & Lucy were born around 1853.

If you are related to this family or have knowledge of this family; I would love to share and exchange information, ideas and comments.

In Part 3, we will look at the other daughter and her husband Al Glass. It’s time for me to update my research plan on this couple.
