Over the forthcoming Saturday for the next two to three months I will be highlighting and documenting 11 children of Thomas Davis and his wife Nancy Rivers.

In Nancy Rivers Davis pension application Rilah Smith made these two statements
The he (Rilah Smith) was born 28 October 1788.
That he (Rilah Smith were school-fellows with the two oldest son, William & Samuel, of Thomas & Nancy Rivers and that he was three months older than Samuel this first child.
Samuel Davis was born about Jan 1789 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.1 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Scattering, Sumter, Alabama.2 He died on 29 Oct 1857 at the age of 68 in Sumter County, Alabama.
Samuel Davis and Sarah Weaver were married about 1809 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. Sarah Weaver was born on 13 May 1793 in South Carolina. She died on 14 Dec 1824 at the age of 31 in Dallas County, Alabama.

Samuel Davis and Susan Campbell were married on 1 Nov 1830 in Greene, Alabama. Susan Campbell was born in Jul 1814 in Alabama. 3 She appeared in the census in 1860 in Southern Division, Sumter, Alabama.4 5 She died after Jun 1880 at the age of 65 in Sumter County, Alabama.
Samuel Davis and Susan Campbell had the following children:
i. William R. Davis, born 23 Feb 1830, Butler Co.,Alabama; married Mary Ann Brown, 1857, Alabama.
ii. Catherine Davis was born in Jun 1832 in Alabama.

iv. Hugh M. Davis was born on 31 May 1836 in Alabama. 7 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Livingston, Sumter, Alabama.8
v. Mary Martha Davis, born 19 Dec 1838, Alabama; married William James, 1859, Alabama.
vi. Ellen Davis was born on 1 Dec 1840 in Alabama. 9 10 She died in Dec 1921 at the age of 81.
vii. Amanda C. Davis, born 29 Jun 1842, Alabama; married Martin Davis, 1859.
viii. Pernicia Jane Davis was born in Nov 1844 in Alabama. She was buried in Texas.
ix. Emma Davis was born on 9 Jan 1851 in Alabama. 11 She died in 1920 at the age of 69.
Samuel Davis was the only child of Thomas and Nancy that didn't remain in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. In a sworn affidavit dated February 16th, 1853 William Davis stated that the Family Bible was taken out West some twenty-five years ago by her son, Samuel Davis.

Surname Saturday - Davis-Morris
Michael Davis was born 20 September 1867 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.[1]
He was a son of William A. Davis and Nancy J. Hurst. On 29 May 1888, his father William A. died. Michel was a buyer at his father’s estate sell in 1888/1889. At this time he was a young man, age 20 and single. That same year his Mother also died. Sometime between 1888 and 1895 young Michael decided to move our West to Texas.
In 1895 Michael had met a young lady named Magnolia R. "Maggie" Morris and they were married that same year. [2]
Magnolia R. "Maggie" Morris was born about 1877 in Richland Parish, Louisiana. [3] [4] [5] [6] By 1900, Michael & Maggie had settled down near Terrell in Kaufman County, Texas and had started a family.
Michael M. Davis and Magnolia R. “Maggie” Morris had the following children:
i. Lola C. Davis was born about 1897 in Kaufman County, Texas. [7] [8]
ii. Shirley Mae Davis, born 25 Jun 1899, Lawrence, Texas; married John L. Jones; died 1 May 1946, Terrell, Kaufman, Texas.
iii. Bessie J. Davis was born about 1904 in Kaufman County, Texas.[9] [10]
iv. Fannie Irene Davis was born on 28 Aug 1908 in Lawrence, Kaufman, Texas.[11] [12] She died on 19 May 1929 at the age of 20 in Terrell, Kaufman, Texas.[13] She was buried on 20 May 1929 at Oakland Cemetery.
In 1929, Michael and Maggie lost their younger daughter while away from home as a student. She died from Mercury poisoning.
Then in 5 May 1930, Michael passed away.[14] It is not known if Michael ever returned to Chesterfield after leaving in the late 1880’s.

Obituary Sunday- Mrs. John N. Davis
Obituary - Mrs. John N. Davis was buried last Monday at Chesterfield Cemetery, funeral services having been conducted at St. Paul's Church by Rev. B. J. Guess. Mrs. Davis passed away at the Wadesboro Hospital, where she had suffered for some time with typhoid fever, which she contracted in Chesterfield. At the time she was taken ill Mr. Davis was in grave danger from the same disease. He has since recovered. The deceased was well known in this part of the county, having been born at Ruby. She was a daughter of Mr. J. W. Crowley and besides her husband, is survived by her father; her brothers, J. F. Crowley, of this county and Vance Crowley, of Louisiana; her sisters, Mrs. M. R. Swink and Mrs. Richard Munnerlyn, of near Chesterfield. Mr. and Mrs. Davis had no children but had adopted a daughter. Mrs. Davis had for many years been a member of St. Paul's Church. The bereaved husband has the heartfelt sympathy of many friends who knew and appreciated the exceptional qualities of the good woman who has gone beyond.1
Mrs. John N. Davis was Mrs. Jessie F. Crowley Davis, born 18 Feb 1877; died 8 Feb 1920 in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina. She is buried in the Chesterfield City Cemetery.

Wednesday’s Child: Little Ivy Davis
Little Ivy Davis, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. A. Davis
The community was shocked upon learning of the sad accident of Little Ivy Davis. Ivy was at play Wednesday when a gate fell on her and killed her instantly. She was five years old dearly loved by all who knew her. Her mother died when she was an infant. She leaves to mourn her a father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Davis, four sisters and two brothers. The whole community extends their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. The body was laid to rest Thursday morning at Bethel Church. The large crowd at the funeral attested the love held for little Ivy and the family. We hate to lose our little darling from our midst but "God's will be done." He has a better home for her and we should be glad that she is reaping the golden harvest of her sweet little life, She is "Asleep in Jesus Forever More at Rest."[1]
This is a very sad story. It's hard to imagine the pain that James Alexander was experiencing. He had lost his first wife, Mary Ella Smith on 22 Jan 1902. Then he had married Annie Violet Douglas about 1902 and to them Little Iva was born on 9 Jan 1917. Iva's mother, Annie, passed away on 22 March 1918 when Little Iva was just a year old. James had remarried a third time to Leilan Douglass and now Little Iva has been accidently killed on 29 Mar 1922.

Tombstone Tuesday – Benjamin Thomas Davis
Benjamin Thomas Davis was born in 1829 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was enumerated in the 1850 & 1860 Census. Benjamin was killed at Ft. Stevens, Virginia on 28 May 1864[1]. He was 35 years old at his death.
Benjamin Thomas Davis and Mary Jane Knight were married about 1849 in South Carolina. Mary Jane Knight, daughter of Richard Knight and Temperance, was born in 1828 in South Carolina.
Living with Benjamin and Mary Jane Davis in the 1860 census is Ann E. Lisenby, born in 1850 in NC. The relationship of Ann E. Lisenby to Benjamin and Mary Jane is unknown.
Benjamin Thomas Davis entered the war of 20 December 1861. He served as Captain of his own unit. [2]The unit was formed at Georgetown, SC on Jan 19, 1862 as the B. T. Davis Company, South Carolina Volunteers, Infantry (SCVI).
Captain Davis was granted a 30-day furlough August 1st, 1863. In a letter within his Civil War file, the surgeon general stated that he was suffering from chronic diarrhea.
Captain Davis was killed on the battlefield at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on 28 May 1864[3]. He was buried there in Virginia.
General W. D. Craig had a Civil War Marker placed in memory of Capt. Davis at the Chesterfield Public Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina. [4]

Finding Nova Mae Hurst
Sometime about 1997, Lavance Tyler Davis asks me to find an old friend from his younger years; a lady named Nova Mae Hurst. Details of this search are too extensive to document here but I did find Nova Mae, married and living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Nova Mae was first married to Arthur Randell Fondern. By this union she had three daughters. Nova Mae and Randy divorced and she married on 15 Mar 1959 Dewey Wayne Smouse in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Nova Mae died 4 April 2010. We corresponded and talked quite often after connecting with each other in 1998.
Lavance Tyler Davis died 17 October 2004.

Nova Smouse 86 resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully Easter Sunday at her home with family by her side. Nova was born in Brownwood, TEXAS on September 9, 1923. She moved to Albuquerque 56 years ago. She is survived by her husband Wayne (Dewey) Smouse, son David Smouse and wife Linda of Albuq. Three daughters, Irma Patton of Bernalillo, Gail Norris of Washington state, Anita Clark of Friona,TEXAS. Nova had 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Nova was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Nova was a member of the Bernalillo Co. Extension Club. She raised, groomed and showed poodles in the 1960's. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Tyler Davis was born in Chesterfield County, SC., December 25, 1917, the son of Reubin Nathan and Effie White Davis. He was a World War II Army Veteran, retired Bus Driver for SCE&G and a horse-drawn carriage driver in historic Charleston in the 1970's. He was a member of the SCE&G Good Friends Club, an honorary member of the Low Country Beekeepers Association, and an active member of Legacy Cathedral. Surviving are his wife; his son, D. Nathan Davis of Charleston, SC; his daughter, Enola Davis Bluemel of Charleston, SC., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his brother, Robert D. Davis, and sister, Mary Davis Goodale both of Chesterfield, SC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, Inc., 3870 Leeds Avenue SU 101, N. Charleston, SC 29405. Another Elusive Ancestor
Nancy Ann Davis is another one of my elusive ancestors. Nancy was born 11 May 1864 to Thomas P. Davis and Nancy Jane Massey. She should first appear in the 1870[1] and she is not listed. The 1870 Census in Chesterfield is very problematic and almost useless as a research aid. After the Civil war the residents of the county were very leery of the federal government. As sort of a protest, when the 1870 census was taken they would only give INITIALS for names and in most cases only the first initial. In 1870, Thomas & Nancy had at least 8 known children that should have been on the Census and a daughter born in April 1870 that may have been; yet, there are only 6 listed. Nancy Jane Davis is missing.
Then in the 1880 Census[2] we find Nancy Ann Davis listed as a daughter. She is listed as Ann Davis, daughter, age 14, born in South Carolina. There is a gap in census due to the loss, by fire, of the 1890, so it's 1900, she married and lost with no clue as to her married name.
At this point Nancy Ann became a "brick wall" or in detective terms a "cold case" and it remained there until a clue was found in 2004. In 2004 a local genealogist, published a booklet of obituaries from the local newspaper for the years 1932-1936. Among those obituaries was one for Nancy Ann brother John Nelson Davis[3] containing this info, "he is survived by seven sisters all of this county, among that list was the name Mrs. Ed Driggers". John Nelson died in Chesterfield, South Carolina and while Mrs. Ed Driggers may have been there in September 1932 when John Nelson died; but, she was not there now, nor was a tombstone or death certificate found.
My next clue came from a researcher in Florida that was researching the Davis family. She informed me that Nancy and her husband moved to Florida. Now I had a name and a place.
Nancy Ann Davis married John Walter Driggers (Not Ed Driggers) in 1898[4]. Their first child, a daughter named Pauline was born 6 Nov 1899[5] in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. By 1900, Walter and Ann were in Coffee County, Alabama. While there they had two additional children - Florence, b. 1901 and James Marvin, b. 1905. They them moved to Crestview, Florida and from there to Jacksonville, Florida in 1916.
Nancy died 26 May 1936 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida; John Walter died on 10 Jul 1966.
OBITUARY: Mr. Nancy Ann Driggers, 72, of 1704 Swift Street, died about noon yesterday following a brief illness, Mrs. Driggers was born at Chesterfield, S. C., moving here from Crestview, Fla., about 20 years ago. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Mrs. Driggers is survived by her widower, Walter W. Driggers; two daughters, Mrs. Pauline McKee and Mrs. Florence Huff; and a son. James M. Driggers, residing here; also six sisters, Mrs. Ella Oliver, Ruby, S. C.; Mrs. Mary Therrell. Mrs. Hattie Rivers, Mrs. Minnie Johnson, Mrs. Lottie Driggers and Mrs. Sarah Pitts, and a brother, Jeff Davis, all residing at Chesterfield. Funeral services will be held In the chapel of the Seashole Funeral Parlors at 2 P. M. Thursday the Rev. Ira Sanders, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, and the Rev. Robert G. Witty, pastor of Faith Temple, officiating. Pallbearers will be: Carl Cesery, George McCormick, E. L. Dorsey, P. L. McCloud, W. C. Outler, Ray Permenter. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. OBITUARY: DRIGGERS- John Walter Driggers, 86, who lived at 1712 7th St N. in Jacksonville Beach died at a Jacksonville Hospital. Mr. Driggers was born in Chesterfield, S.C. and had lived in Jacksonville Beach for 50 years coming here from Crestview. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Pauline McKee and Mrs. Florence Ruff of Jacksonville Beach, one son, J. M. Driggers of Jacksonville and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Giddens-Griffith Beach Funeral Home with Rev. W. T. Everson of the Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Giddens-Griffith Beach Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.

Serendipity - Finding Catherine Brock Davis
I started my family research in 1976. The Brock surname is one of my Maternal direct lines. My maternal grandmother was a Brock. In the early days of research there was no searchable database for census and Ancestry.com didn't exist. You found people on the Census by converting your Surname to a Soundex Code and then searching the soundex to determine your Census ED, city and state. Then you pulled the roll of film for your state and county covering the ED found on the soundex and searched the Census film for your ancestor. It took a while to do census research in those days.
Back then I would have never found William L. Davis and Catherine Brock. Oh, I knew about them, they were in the 1860 Census, married, with one child but I never could find them in the censuses beyond 1860, the 1870-1920 census. So you move on thinking they met with an unfortunate accident, they all died or they moved. Sometime around 2000, I corresponded with a fellow Brock researcher in Florida. His ancestors were also Brock's from Chesterfield County. It was while searching for his ancestors that the serendipity moment happen and I found William & Catherine.
William L. Davis was born in 1834 in NC. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.1 He served in the military J. C. Coit's Chesterfield Light Artillery in 1861–1865 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.2 William is listed in the 1870 & 1880 Census for Duval County, Florida, United States.3 4 Catherine in her Civil War pension application states that William died on 3 Jul 1891 at the age of 57 in Woodtown, Duval Co., FL5. after being struck by lightning.
William L. Davis and Catherine Brock were married either on 6 Jan 1856 or 2 Mar 1857 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.6 7 Catherine Brock, daughter of Squire H. Brock and Rachel Parker, was born in Mar 1837 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. 8 9 10 11 12 She appeared in the census in 1900 & 1910 for Duval County, Florida, United States.13 15 She applied for a Civil War Pension for Service of William L. Davis on 7 Nov 1903 in Duval County, Florida, United States.14 . She died on 2 Jul 1917 at the age of 80 in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida, United States. Note: On two different pages in Catherine Civil War pension application she lists two distinct different dates for her marriage to William L. Davis.
