Deciphering the 1880 Census Schedule

The below digital images have been extracted from the Ancestry.com website so that we may examine one particular family listed on this page.

Ancestry transcribers have transcribed this family as the A. T. and M. W. T. Powell family.
The problem is that there is no A. T and M. W.  T.  Powell family. For many years I have looked and re-looked at this family in an attempt to determine exactly who the member are with this household.

Recently, I was in touch with another Powell researcher, Marilyn, and our correspondence triggers a thought/memory that has finally solved the mystery of this Powell Family and how they connect with other Powell's in Chesterfield and Marlboro County, South Carolina.

First, Ancestry has transcribed this Census entry as A. T. Powell. Close examination of line 16 shows that the initials are W. T. Powell.

Thus my correction of this Census record is: 
*  Head of household:  W. T. Powell  [William Thomas Powell, son of Richard Thompson Powell].
*  Wife M. W. T. Powell is Mary W. Dixon Powell
*  W. T. Powell is William Thomas Powell [Son of William + Mary]
*  M. W. Powell is [un-identified Daughter of William and Mary]
*  Ellen Powell is [Sister of the Senior Wm. T.; daughter of Richard T. Powell]
*  S. E. Powell is Sallie Emerson Powell [Sister of the Senior Wm. T.; daughter of Richard T. Powell]

Marriage of Josiah Sellers

Josiah Sellers was born about 1829 a son of Abigail Sellers; Husband Name unknown. Abigail Sellers, 61, was born in 1789 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; Roll: M432_851; Image: 357, Page: 176A + B (stamped); Line 42, Dwelling 1192, Family 1192; Abigail SELLARS, female, age 61, born in SC; Josiah SELLARS, male, age 21, born in SC and Aaron SELLARS, male, age 19, born in SC.

Abigail had two sons in her household in 1850; Josiah age 21 and Aaron, age 19.

Aaron served in the Civil War with the 6th Regiment South Carolina Cavalry Company D (Aiken's Partisan Rangers) (1st Partisan Rangers) CSA.

On 13 Feb 1861, Josiah married Clara Ann Ware in Santa Clare, California.

In the 1870 Census, Josiah Sellers can be found in Alisal, Monterey, California.

On 27 October 1871, Josiah married Juanita Valencia in Monterey, California. I have no clue what happens to Clara Ann Ware.

Judgment Against Mary A. (Purvis) Dickson

Yesterday, I posted and discussed a lien that Mary A (Purvis) Dickson entered into with George W. Williams and Company.

Today’s post concerns a judgment against Mary A. (Purvis) Dickson issued on 14th September 1866.
Whereas, by virtue of an execution issued out of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Chesterfield tested the 14th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty Six and returnable according to law directed to the Sheriff of Chesterfield County, and lodged in his office on the 14 day of October A. D. 1893 commanding him out of the personal and real property of Mary A. Dickson to satisfy a certain judgement which was rendered on the fourteenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and Sixty six in an action in the said Court between W. L. T. Prince administrator of John C. Coit deceased Plaintiff and Mary A. Dickson Defendant in favor of said Plaintiff against the said Defendant for the sum of Five Hundred and Fifty nine 10/100 Dollars as appears by the Judgement Roll filed in the Office of the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas for said County, I have levied upon a certain tract of land in the County of Chesterfield aforesaid, herein after more particular described.

As shown in yesterdays post, this judgment is dated in the same year that a Bill for Injunction and settlement of the estate of Mary’s father John Purvis who had died 12 years earlier in Mar 1854.

John Purvis died intestate in March 1854, leaving his widow, Sarah Purvis and children: Mary A., widow of William B. Dickson; Charles G. Purvis; John C. Purvis; and Laura S. intermarried with James C. Craig. Additional information: The children of James C. and Laura Purvis Craig: Sallie P. Craig; John J. Craig; Alexander W. Craig; Laura E. Craig; Mollie A. Craig; Edgar Craig; Irene Craig; Leola Craig and James Craig who died at age 11. Alexander J. Purvis died 3 July 1860, leaving as his heir his mother and brothers + sisters; Sarah Purvis died intestate in April 1863; John C. Purvis died intestate 13 October 1864, leaving as his heirs Laura S. Craig, Mary A. Dickson, and Charles G. Purvis.


My first inclination was that Mary had defaulted on her lien and the judgment levied in the within Deed was the results of that default. However, the judgment in this Land deed has nothing to do with the lien she executed on 20 March 1869.

On 14 October 1893, the Sheriff of Chesterfield County was issued an execution order by the courts on the personal and real property of Mary A. (Purvis) Dickson to satisfy a certain judgement which was rendered on the fourteenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and Sixty six in an action in the said Court between W. L. T. Prince administrator of John C. Coit deceased Plaintiff and Mary A. Dickson Defendant in favor of said Plaintiff against the said Defendant for the sum of five Hundred and Fifty nine 10/100 Dollars.

The following was action was taken to satisfy this execution order:
Now Know ye, That I, D. B. Douglass Sheriff as aforesaid, by virtue of the said Execution, Levy and Sale, and by the Statute in such case made and provided, and for and in consideration of the said sum of four Hundred dollars to me in hands paid, or secured to be paid according to the terms of the said sale, Have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents Do Grant bargain, sell and convey unto the said W. F. Stevenson as trustee as aforesaid his Heirs and assigns forever All that certain piece, parcel or tract of land situate lying and being in the County of Chesterfield State of South Carolina, lying on both sides of Thompson creek about four miles from the town of Cheraw on the Camden road containing eighteen Hundred acres more or less (1800) being the land allotted to said Mary A. Dickson in the partition of the lands of John Purvis deceased about the 9th of November 1864.

Because of loss of records, we have no knowledge as to how much land each of the three surviving children received but I’m betting that 1800 acres are ALL of the lands that Mary A. Dickson inherited from her father.

It is not known when Mary A. (Purvis) Dickson passed away but she is not enumerated in the 1900 Chesterfield County Census. The above court order issued on 14 October 1893 suggests that at that time Mary A. (Purvis) Dickson was alive and well. Therefore, she must have passed away sometime between 14 Oct 1893 and June 1900.

F. Stevenson Trustee for A. B. Coit and T. S Moore for the sum of four Hundred dollars being at that price the highest and last bidder for the same.
Now Know ye, That I, D. B. Douglass  Sheriff as aforesaid, by virtue of the said Execution, Levy and Sale,  and by the Statute in such case made and provided, and for and in consideration of the said sum of four Hundred dollars to me in hands paid, or secured to be paid according to the terms of the said sale, Have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents Do Grant bargain, sell and convey unto the said W. F. B. Coit and I. S. Moore, said land being by his deed discharged of all trust whatsoever, said trustee to hold and control said land until so sold.

Mrs. Mary A. Dickson to George W. Williams + Co. Lien

Mary A. Purvis was the daughter of John Purvis and Sarah McMillian. John Purvis was a large land owner in Chesterfield County.

About 1836, Mary A. Purvis married William B. Dickson. Almost immediately after marriage, they moved to Hinds County, Mississippi. Their first child was born in 1837 and the 1850 Census states that she was born in Mississippi. By 1850, Mary with 5 children is back living with her parents in Chesterfield and she is listed as a widow.

In Mar 1854, her Father, John Purvis passed away.

When the estate was settled about 1866, Sarah and two more of her children had passed away and only 3 siblings remained -  Laura S. Craig, Mary A. Dickson, and Charles G. Purvis.

On 20 March 1869, Mary A (Purvis) Dickson executed a lien on her property for $150.00 in order to obtain supplies to be used and expended on the planting of said plantation and cultivation of the Soil.

She agreed to pay 12% interest per annum

She agreed that all crops would be sent to the lender (George W. William and Co.) so that he could sell them at a commission.

She agreed to pay the loan/lien off by 15 November 1869.

The State of South Carolina
             Memorandum of agreement made and entered into this twentieth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty nine between  George W. Williams, Edward C. Williams, James M. Taylor, William Birarie, Edward Platt, Joseph R. Robertson and James Bridge Jr doing business and trading under the name and style of George W. William + Co. of the State aforesaid of the first part and Mrs. Mary A. Dickson resident of the County of Chesterfield State of aforesaid of the second part.
First, The parties of the first part agrees with the party of the second part who is engaged in the cultivation of the soil upon a plantation in same County and State 4 miles west of Cheraw to make advances to him during the current year in money or supplies to be used and expended on the planting of said plantation and cultivation of the Soil the said advances not to exceeds in all the sum of One hundred and fifty Dollars the said party of the second part first giving to the party of the first part a lien on the Crops which may be made during this year upon the lands in the cultivation of which the advances so made shall have been expended in preference a full liens existing or otherwise to the extent of such advances with interest thereon at the rate of Twelve (12) per cent per annum in accordance with the provisions of the Act of Assembly of the said state in such case made and provided.
Second, the party of the Second part covenants and agrees with the parties of the first part in consideration of the advances so made and to be made by them to him that he will expended and apply the whole of said advances in and upon the planting and cultivation of his plantation in in <sic> which he is now engaged and for and in consideration of the premises the said party of the second part hath given and granted and by these presents doth give and grant to the said parties of the first part and to the Survivor or Survivors of them and the Executors and administrators or assigns of such Survivor a lien on the entire crop which shall or may be made during the current year upon the land in the cultivation of which the advances so made by the party of the first part shall be expended, in preference to all others liens existing or otherwise to the extent and amount of such advances together with interest thereon at the rate of twelve (12) per cent per annum in accordance with the provisions of the Act of Assembly of the said State entitled "An Act to secure advances for agricultural purposes" ratified on the twenty-fifth day of September eighteen hundred and Sixty-Six and subject to all the powers, conditions and provisions therein contained.
Third The party of the second part covenants and agrees with the parties of the first part on consideration of the advances so made and to be made by them to him that he will send to them for sale on commission the entire crop of cotton made on said plantation and in default thereof that he will pay to them a commission of two and one half percent on the estimated value of every bale of cotton not sent to them for Sale And further the party of the second part gives the party of the first part a lien on the entire crop for said commission in the same manner as far advances previously named.
Fourth The party of the Second part obligates to send to the partied of the first part sufficient Cotton to pay all advances prior to 15th November next In testimony whereof the parties hereto have hereunder set their hands the day and years first above written.

Was this lien redeemed? It's unclear whether it was redeemed. A common practice during this time was to annotate along the edges of the document whether the lien was redeemed or in default. There is no annotation on this lien.

Tomorrow we will look at another land deed and speculate on the impact of this Lien on the circumstance documented within the forthcoming land deed.

Amanuensis Monday~The Estate Lands of William Burkley

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.


His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.



Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County, SC Land Deed from Mary E. Cato to Alexander Sellers, 1882.1


The land deed, transcribed below, clearly states that the land being sold was acquired by inheritance from the estate of William M. Burkley.

release unto the said Alexander Sellers all my right Title and interest in and to the Estate of William M. Burkley both real and personal the real being that piece parcel and tract of land Situate lying

The problem I have with this is the Will of William M. Burkley states that all his property both real and personal had been left to his Niece – Sarah Frances Hancock.

I will and bequeath all my property both real and personal that I may seized and possess of unto my niece Sarah Frances Hancock to be hers her heirs and assigns forever at my death- the real property or estate above mentioned consisting of three tracts of land in said County adjoining

So which is it? Was both real and personal property left to the Sellers children or was it left to Sarah Frances Hancock? The Land Deed seems to suggest the Will was not carried out as written.

Cato of Chesterfield County in the State aforesaid for and in consideration of the Sum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars to me paid by Alexander Sellers of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the said Alexander Sellers all my right Title and interest in and to the Estate of William M. Burkley both real and personal the real being that piece parcel and tract of land Situate lying and being in the County of Chesterfield on the North Side of the public road leading from Chesterfield Court House to Camden about three and a half miles from Said Court House. The same being a tract of land conveyed to Alexander Sellers, Queen M. Sellers, Louiza J. Sellers, and Mary E. Sellers by the last Will of William M. Burkley deceased. Cato (nee Sellers) is the wife of Abraham M. Cato. Louiza J. Sellers married William Jesse Jenkins; her brother, Alexander, and sister Queen M. Sellers never married.

Estate of James Purvis, Sr.~Inventory and Appraisement

I have written about James F. Purvis, Sr. b. abt 1760 several times. About 1818 James along with other brothers, most notably Gilbert  Purvis, moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to the Hinds and Simpson County area of Mississippi after stopping off in Clarke County, Alabama for a short time.

James F. Purvis, Sr died sometime before 28 November 1836 when an Administrator Bond was issued for the management of his estate. I wrote about the bond here:

It’s Family Time~The Two Malachi Rivers of Chesterfield County

Just as location is important in real estate; accuracy becomes the mantra in genealogy. A genealogy without documentation and accuracy is just another piece of bad fiction.


A common error in research is the connection of an individual with the correct name to the wrong individual or family.
 
I have three Malachi Rivers in my database. The repetition of names from generation to generation makes it easy to mix families resulting in errors in your family history. 


Back in the early to mid-1800, there were two Malachi ‘Mally’ Rivers with wives by the name of Sarah. They were Mother and Daughter and not only did they share the name Sarah but both had Boatwright in these names. The Mothers surname and the Daughter middle name was Boatwright. The commonality of the wives name has resulted in errors in many family histories. Oftentimes, I see family trees with children and spouses connected to the wrong individual or family because of commonality in names.  


The first Malachi Rivers was born 22 August 1812. He married Sarah Ann Boatwright about 1837. He was the son of William Rivers and Elizabeth ‘Betsy” Rivers Rivers.

Malachi and Sarah Ann had a large family of sixteen children. One of those children was an older Daughter they named Sarah Boatwright Rivers. Sarah Boatwright Rivers was born 8 March 1848.

Sarah Boatwright Rivers married Malachi J. Rivers about December 1865. Malachi J. Rivers was born 20 August 1842, a son of Frederick C. Rivers and Sarah Ann Hurst.


Malachi J. Rivers and Sarah Boatwright Rivers had a family of eight children; a daughter and 6 sons. The daughter, Cora, was the seventh child born to this family. 


Sometimes we let simple things trip us up. Don’t let the commonality of names trip you up. Keep the two Malachi Rivers correctly positioned in your family history by remembering that “The younger Malachi is the Son-in-Law of the older Malachi Rivers.”

William Levi ‘Bud’ Huneycutt was the first-born son of Adam William Huneycutt and Eliza M. Craver. He had one older sister and seven other siblings.

On 18 Mar 1881, William Levi and Martha C. Smith were married in Stanly County, North Carolina. To this union were born ten children.

Chesterfield County}
         Whereas Frederick C. Rivers late of the County and State aforesaid died on the 24th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-Eight Seized and possessed of a considerable Estate both real and personal and whereas I Permelia M. Rivers am one of his heirs at Law and distributees and entitled to an interest in his Estate both Real and personal as a distributee and whereas I have sold all my interest in said Estate to Elijah N. Redfearn of same State and County for the sum of thirty-five Dollars ($35.00). Now Know all men that I the said Permelia M. Rivers for and in consideration of the sum of thirty five Dollars ($35.00) aforesaid to me in hand paid by the said Elijah N. Redfearn at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents have granted bargained sold released aliened conveyed, transferred, assigned and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain sell release alien convey transfer assign and confirm into the said Elijah N. Redfearn, all my right title interest and claim to any and all Real Estate of which the said Frederick C. Rivers died Seized and possessed or in any way entitled to or entrusted in, Also all my interest right claim, and share of the personal Estate of the said Frederick C. Rivers, deceased, whether consisting of money movable and tangible chattels Choses in action or Equitable interest, and also any and every other interest that I may be entitled to if any in the Estate of the said Frederick C. Rivers with full power and authority  without any recourse upon me, to sue for and recover the same as fully as I might do, together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and appurtenances to the said property (both Real and personal) belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining. To have and to hold, all and singular the said property before mentioned unto the said Elijah N. Redfearn, his Heirs and assigns forever. And I do hereby bind myself, my heirs, Executors and Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said Real Estate, Personal property, chattels, choses in action and Equitable interest &c unto the said Elijah N. Redfearn his heirs and assigns against myself and my heirs lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof. Witness my hand and seal this the 22nd day Dec. in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Seventy-nine and in the one hundred and fourth year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Armistice Day was renamed Veterans’ Day in 1954.

It’s Family Time~Mary Sellers Gaddy

Mary Sellers was born about 1789 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.  She was the daughter of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook. Mary’s father died 12 Jan 1835 and Equity records from his estate names his daughter Mary as the wife of Thomas Gaddy.

Hardy Sellers died testate on or about 17th January 1835, leaving widow, Levinia Sellers and children: Hardy Huntley Sellers and Zylpha Ann Sellers and the children + grandchildren from a former marriage, John Sellers; Abraham Sellers; Philip Sellers; Richard Sellers; Mary who intermarried with Thomas Gaddy; Elijah Gulledge, James Gulledge, + Pheobe Gulledge the children of Pheobe, a deceased daughter of Hardy Sellers who predeceased her father; and, Iverson L. Briley, the son of Jane, a deceased daughter of Hardy Sellers who predeceased her father.



Mary Sellers and Thomas Gaddy were married about 1813. Thomas Gaddy was born on 2 Oct 1789 in Anson County, North Carolina. His parents are unknown.  In 1820 Thomas and Mary were living in Anson County, North Carolina. Before the next Census was taken in 1830 Thomas and Mary had moved their family to Dekalb County, Georgia. We find Thomas in Dekalb County until his death in October 1849 where he is listed in the 1850 Mortality Census. His wife, Mary Sellers Gaddy can be found living with her daughter Martha and son-in-law John Steen in 1850.

        i.    Hardy Sellers Gaddy, born 29 Jul 1815, Anson County, North Carolina; married Nancy Malinda Ivey, abt 1856, Dekalb County, Georgia; died 30 Nov 1895, Jasper, Walker, Alabama.
         ii.    Anne Gaddy was born about 1819 in Anson County, North Carolina.
         iii.    Phillip Samuel Gaddy, born Jan 1825, Anson County, North Carolina; married Audry Anne Steen, 8 Aug 1850, Dekalb County, Georgia.
         iv.    Henrietta Gaddy was born about 1827 in Anson County, North Carolina.
         v.    George Washington Gaddy, born abt 1827, Anson County, North Carolina; married Emily Lou Riding, 14 Jan 1847, Dekalb County, Georgia; died 17 Sep 1862, Sharpsburg, Washington, Maryland.
         vi.    Phebe Gaddy, born abt 1830, Dekalb County, Georgia; married Wilson Singleton, 29 Dec 1850, Dekalb County, Georgia.
         vii.    Mary Malissa Gaddy, born 9 May 1834, Dekalb County, Georgia; married Daniel Downs, 1 Jan 1851, Dekalb County, Georgia; died 14 Oct 1899, Carroll County, Mississippi.


There are several death dates shown for Mary Sellers Gaddy but realistic her death date is unknown at the present time. She was last enumerated the 1850 Census with her daughter Martha and Son-in-law, John Steen.

Mary Sellers Gaddy is my 4th Great Grand Aunt.

The State of South Carolina
                 To all to whom these presents may concern: I P. F. Spofford Esquire Sheriff of the County of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid Send Greetings: Whereas, by virtue of a writ of Fieri Facias, issued, out of the Court of Common Pleas, for the County of Chesterfield dated the fifteenth day of January in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy and returnable according to law, to me directed, and lodged in my Office on the fifteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and seventy commanding me of the goods, chattels, houses, lands, and other hereditaments and real Estate of McCarroll Sellers to levy the sum of Five hundred and fifty nine dollars and forty eight cents  debt and costs which George Jowers by the judgement of the Said Court at Chesterfield C. H. lately recovered against the said McCarroll Sellers. I have levied upon a certain tract of land, in the county of Chesterfield, aforesaid, herein after more particularly described and Whereas after due and legal notice, the said tract of one hundred, and Seventy-five acres of land More or less was on the Second day of September being the first Monday in the Said Month, between the hours of Eleven, in the forenoon, and three o'clock in the afternoon of that day at the Court House in Chesterfield openly, publicly, and fairly and according to usage and custom of ???, by me sold for and towards Satisfaction of the Said Judgement and Execution, unto George Jowers for the sum of of <sic> one Hundred Dollars, he being at that price the highest and last bidder for the Same. Now know ye, That I P. F. Spofford Sheriff as aforesaid, by virtue of the said Execution levy and Sale and of the Statute in such case made and provided and for and in consideration of the Said Sum of One Hundred Dollars to me in hand paid, or secured to be paid according to the terms of said Sale Have granted, bargained and Sold and by these presents do grant, Sell, and convey unto the Said George Jowers his heirs and assigns forever, All that certain tract of land Situate lying and being in the County of Chesterfield aforesaid, Containing one hundred and Seventy-five acres more or less, adjoining the lands of John S. Miller, Loyd Jordan and others. Together with all and Singular the members and appurtenances thereunto belonging, and all estate, title and interest which the Said McCarroll Sellers of right had in, and to the Same: To Have and To Hold, the Said premises, with the appurtenances, unto the Said George Jowers his heirs and assigns forever. Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #112–Cameron Adams

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Cameron Adams 1

Cameron Adams and  Jane Copeland were married about 1830 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Over the next 14 years (1830-1854) Cameron and Jane would have a family of 11 children; 6 sons and 5 daughters.

Between 1854 and 1860, Cameron passed away. I have not been successful in finding an exact death date for Cameron or his wife Jane Copeland.

The “Adams Family Cemetery”  has 12 markers within the cemetery. None are for Cameron or Jane Adams.

There was a Probate of the Estate of Cameron Adams and it can be found here:

There are some clues to his death date but again no specific date of death is recorded.

First is Image 621: 
This image, dated 1861, is a document showing that Alfred M. Lowry had surveyed the lands of the estate of Cameron Adams for $10.28.

1860 Census:
The 1860 Census for Chesterfield County shows that Cameron is no longer present in the household in 1860. The census was enumerated on 16 July 1860. Cameron absent from the Census suggests that he was deceased prior to 16 July 1860.

Susannah E. Adams Grigg
The death certificate for Susannah E. Adams, the last known child of Cameron Adams and Jane Copland, shows that she was born on 20 May 1854.

This document suggests that her Dad was last known to be alive about September 1853. I think its safe to say that Cameron Adams died between Sept 1853 and 16 July 1860.

There were several minor children involved here and if Gen. Sherman had not burned the Courthouse in 1865 there would be Orphan Court records that would narrow down or list the exact date that Cameron Adams passed away. If you have any information on the death of Cameron Adams I would love to hear from you.

It’s Family Time~Sarah Jane Brock Lee

Sarah Jane Brock was born on 16 Jun 1842 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Sarah Jane was the daughter of Squire H. Brock and Rachel Parker.

Sarah Jane Brock and Henry Alexander Lee were married in 1866. Henry Alexander Lee, son of William Lee and Martha Elizabeth Thomas, was born on 4 Mar 1844 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Henry died on 24 Feb 1912 at the age of 67 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Henry Alexander Lee and Sarah Jane Brock had the following child:

        i.    Thomas Augustus Lee was born on 9 Oct 1869 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 5 Sep 1922 at the age of 52 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Sarah died on 25 Nov 1910 at the age of 68 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Henry died on 24 Feb 1912 at the age of 67 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.


Sarah Jane Brock Lee is 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriages of Adam Dry


When the Census Taker visited the Adam Dry household (Dwelling 272, Family 273) on 16 August 1850 he recorded two members within the household:
  • Line 18, Dwelling 272, Family 273
    • Adam Dry, Male, age 23
    • Elizabeth (Layton) Dry, Female, age 28.
There’s no doubt that the Census Taker noticed that Elizabeth was carrying a child; a child that was born just two months later on 20 October 1850, their firstborn, a son, Moses Adam Dry.

No Marriage document has been found that records this marriage but we know it most likely took place before 20 January 1850. This is substantiated by the 1900 Census which also shows Adam and Elizabeth marriage year as 1850.

Adam and Elizabeth were married 55 years before her death in 1905. They would raise a family of six children; 5 sons and a daughter of which four were still living upon her death including her daughter.

After the death of Elizabeth, Adam decided that he needed a new companion marring a widower Sarah A. Eudy on 11 September 1906.

  Adam Dry Marriage

Sarah A. Burlson, the widow of Julius M. Eudy, was the daughter of Joseph Burlson and Lucy E. Almond. Julius and Sarah were married 5 November 1868 and he (Julius) had passed away on 2 Nov 1880.

Eight years after their marriage Adam Dry passed away on 19 January 1914 and two years later Sarah A. Burlson Eudy Dry passed away on 19 December 1916.
