Mathew Sellers, Chesterfield to Choctaw County, Alabama

E-mail correspondence from a fellow researcher (Gary P) of Columbia, South Carolina led to some research that identified another migration of families from South Carolina.
Page 534 of the 1860 Choctaw County, Alabama Census shows  Purvis, Sellers, Hurst and Massey families that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Choctaw County, Alabama.

On this page (534) we find Massey, Hurst, Sellers and Purvis families. On Line 27, Dwelling 542, Family 516 is D. J. PERVEY as shown; the family is really Daniel J. Purvis and his wife Zilpha Ann Sellers Purvis. 

Zilpha Ann Sellers Purvis. was born in Chesterfield county about 1844 to Mathew Sellers and his wife Sallie [LNU].

If you know Sallie’s surname please contact me.  

The family is found in Chesterfield County in 1850 and in Choctaw County Alabama in 1860.

You can see Zilpha Ann, age 6 in the 1850 Census in Mathew household and again in 1860, at age 16, as the wife of Daniel J. Purvis. 

Also if you study the 1860 census for the household of Mathew Sellers you will find their youngest child, S. Sellers, female. age 6/12. This particular Census was taken on 29 August 1860. This suggests that S. Sellers age 6/12 was born about February 1860. 

This in turn suggest that Mathew Sellers packed up his family between February and August of 1860 and moved them to Choctaw County, Alabama. 


Mathew’s wife Sally died sometime before Aug 1876. In August 1876, Mathew married Elizabeth M. Christian daughter of Alex Christian.  Mathew Sellers died 1 March 1896 in Choctaw County, Alabama. 

The parents of Mathew Sellers, born about 1818 have never been determined. Marie Gulledge Wiggins and James “Jim” Pigg worked extensively on the Sellers line. The Sellers line is also my direct line on the maternal side of my family and as of tonight Mathew’s parents are still unknown. If you have information on this family, please contact me.

Wednesday’s Child – Infant Twins

William J. A. Hurst was born 16 January 1853[1] in Chesterfield, South Carolina.  He moved with his Father and Mother to Collin County, Texas between 1870 and 1880. He married Susanna H. Burch, daughter of James Clothier Burch and Celia Rebecca Johnson, on 13 January 1881 in Collin County, Texas. It likely they knew each other back in Chesterfield and may have traveled together during the migration to Texas. 

William and Susannah had a set of twins on 25 August 1881. The twins did not survive. Records indicate that one twin died the same day and the other twin died 3 days later on 28 Aug 1881. No record has been found to indicate the names or gender of the twins.

Chambersville Cemetery Transcript[4]

William and Susannah were married 56 years when Susannah died in August 1937. William died a year and one half later in January 1939. There is no indication that William and Susanna had any other children after the birth of these twins.

Sunday’s Obituary – Miss Ellen Powell

Ellen Powell was born 11Oct 1851 and died 9 Dec 1940[1]. She was a daughter of Thompson Powell and his wife Mary Boatwright. Ellen was never married.  She had one brother and two sisters all of whom preceded her in death.  

Miss Ellen Powell, 92, died at the home of her great-nephew, Lee Jenkins, just west of Chesterfield, early Monday morning and was buried at Pine Grove cemetery Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock.

Miss Powell was the youngest child of the late Thompson and Polly Powell, who were among the earliest settlers of this county. 

She had one brother, Richard Powell who was a captain in the Confederate Army and for years engaged in business in Cheraw. She was distantly related to Drewery Boatwright whose monument in the Boatwright cemetery bears the date 1812. 

She was the aunt of Miss Artie Hurst, Mrs. Jesse Jenkins, Miss Garphilia Smith and Miss Nettie Smith. 

She was distantly related also to the Powells of Columbia, Bennettsville and Cheraw, and to the Rivers family of Chesterfield. [The Chesterfield Advertiser, Dec 1940][2][3]

Her niece Artie Hurst is a daughter of her sister Mary E. Powell Hurst and the other 3 nieces are daughters of her sister Ann Rebecca Powell Smith. 

On the 26 April 1934, Ellen E. Powell, of Chesterfield County applied for admission to the Confederate Home for the service of her brother Richard Thompson Powell in Company B, Eighth Regiment, Infantry. Disposition unknown but suspect it was disapproved based on her obituary.[4]

Migration and Relocation: The Wanderer's Lust

Most of us have the "wanderer's lust" or curiosity of what is over the next hill. Driving along and see a lovely trail off to somewhere and wondering where it leads. Maybe this wandering lust is what led me to leave home at 18 and join the Air Force; making it a career for the next 23 years.

Our early pioneers and settlers, the immigrants; they all had a wandering lust for a new beginning, a new frontier.

In 1818, there was a migration of families from Chesterfield County, SC through Georgia, to Clarke County, Alabama; then to Rankin County area of Mississippi and some even to Louisiana and Texas. The names of some of the Families in this migration were: Purvis, Holifield, Hancock, Rivers, Howell and Parks.

Then in the 1890's there was another migration of Chesterfield County families to Arkansas.  In this group were the Rivers, Hurst, Davis, Gainey and Lisenby or Lisemby families.  This migration, based on folklore, occurred in 1892.  A fact that is most likely true since the birth of the third child of John Lewis Rivers and Rosanna Lee Hurst occurred in Arkansas. John W. Rivers, born 8 March 1883 was their third child. 

The obituary for Samuel W. Lisenby states:

"Mr. Lisenby, who had engaged in farming since coming to the Cross Roads community in 1897, was a native of Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F. lodge."

Also among that group were the parents of siblings of Rosanna Hurst Rivers, Phillip James Hurst and Mary Anne Gainey.

Joseph Thurman Hurst, a brother of Rosanne Hurst Rivers, was married to Amanda J. Davis, b. about 1867. Her parents were Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Carolina Massey.  Not much is known about Amanda J. Davis and after years of research this puzzle lies unsolved.

Amanda & Joseph were married about 1885 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.  She was either 17 or 18 when they were married. Their firstborn, a son – Thomas Oscar Hurst was born 9 April 1886 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Next was born a daughter, Mary Eleanor Hurst on 18 Nov 1888 and finally a son – Joseph Hurst.  In 1890, Joseph & Amanda had a son named Joseph that was stillborn and is buried in Zoar Cemetery[1], Chesterfield, South Carolina. It's almost certain that Joe and Amanda made the trip together in 1892 to Arkansas; sometime between 1890 and 1900, Amanda  passed away, when & where is unknown but most likely in Arkansas during the birth of another child. No record of the death of Amanda J. Hurst has been found. 

Joseph is not done with his wandering; in 1900, he was found in Collin County, Texas, a widower. His son Thomas Oscar Hurst was living in Township 8, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory with his Uncle James M. Hurst a brother to Joseph Thurman Hurst.[2]

On February 8, 1903, Joseph married Keturah Melvina Bounds in Collin County, Texas.

Joseph Thruman Hurst was born on 27 May 1866 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Justice Precinct 4, Collin, Texas. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Justice Precinct 4, Collin, Texas. Joseph appeared in the census in 1920 in Justice Precinct 5, Brown, Texas. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Precinct 5, Brown, Texas. He died on 4 Sep 1961 at the age of 95 in Brownwood, Brown, Texas.[3] Joseph was buried on 6 Sep 1961 in Brownwood, Brown, Texas. Joseph Thruman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis were married about 1885 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Amanda J. Davis, daughter of Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Caroline Massey, was born in 1867 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. [5] [6] She died between 1890-1900.

Joseph Thruman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis had the following children:

          i. Thomas Oscar Hurst, born 9 Apr 1886, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married America Pearl Carruth, 2 Sep 1906, Brownwood, Brown,Tx; died 13 Sep 1948, Winchell, Brown Co., TX.

         ii. Mary Eleanor Hurst, born 18 Nov 1888, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, ; married Ben P. Stiles, 7 Feb 1906, Collin County,Tx; died 13 May 1943, Collin County,Tx.

        iii. Joseph Hurst was born in 1890 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, . He died in 1890 at the age of 0 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was buried in 1890 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Joseph Thruman Hurst and Keturah Melvina Bounds were married on 8 Feb 1903 in Collin Co.,Texas.[7] [8] Keturah Melvina Bounds, daughter of Carroll W. Bounds and Mary L., was born on 31 May 1876 in Collin County,Texas. She died on 8 May 1957 at the age of 80 in Brownwood, Brown,Texas.[9] She was buried on 9 May 1957 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. Joseph Thruman Hurst and Keturah Melvina Bounds had the following children:

iv.             Phillip Carroll Hurst was born on 5 Apr 1904 in ,Collin County,Texas.

vi.       Mary Etta Hurst, born 28 Aug 1909, ,Collin County,Texas; married John Samford, 29 Nov 1928, Brown County, Texas; died 18 Aug 1997, Hondo, Medina, Texas.

vii.      Joseph Lee Hurst was born on 15 Mar 1914 in Brown, Texas. He died on 6 Jul 1965 at the age of 51 in Big Spring, Howard, Texas. He was buried on 7 Jul 1965 in Lovington, Lea, New Mexico.

Sarah Ann Hurst Boatwright Will & Estate

Sarah Ann Hurst was born on 10 Mar 1826 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina[1].  Sarah Ann [Hurst] Boatwright Will is dated 1 March 1904. Sarah died before 18 October 1909 at the age of 83 and was buried in the Boatwright Family Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[2]

Sarah Ann Hurst and Samuel Boatwright were married in late 1850. Samuel Boatwright, son of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis, was born on 5 Aug 1832 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 19 Feb 1863 at the age of 30 and is buried in the Boatwright Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Sarah Ann Hurst and Samuel Boatwright had the following children:

1. William Manley Boatwright[3] was born on 13 Dec 1852 in died on 23 Jun 1937 at the age of 84 in Anson County, North Carolina. William was buried on 24 Jun 1937 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.

William Manley Boatwright and Julia Ann Davis were married about 1870. Julia Ann Davis, daughter of John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst, was born on 20 Mar 1849 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.[4]    She died at the age of 62 on 27 September 1911 and was buried in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

William Manley Boatwright and Lottie May Williams were married on 1 Jul 1912 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Lottie May Williams, daughter of Reason Williams and Jane Ricketts, was born on 4 Jul 1888 and died on 1 Sep 1920 at the age of 32 in Anson County, NC. She was buried on 3 Sep 1920 in Anson County, North Carolina, United States.

William Manley Boatwright and Susan Davis were married on 15 Sep 1920 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Susan Davis, daughter of Isham Davis and Mary, was born on 20 Aug 1872 and died on 1 Nov 1957 at the age of 85 in Florence, Florence, South Carolina. She was buried in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

2. John Calvin "Cally" Boatwright was born about 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died in 1938 at the age of 83 in Sarasota, Sarasota County, Florida.

John Calvin "Cally" Boatwright and Henrietta E. Hurst were married. Henrietta E. Hurst, daughter of William Monroe Hurst and Mary E. Powell, was born about 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.

John Calvin "Cally" Boatwright and Elizabeth were married about 1896. Elizabeth was born about 1879 in FL.

3. Isaac James Boatwright was born in Mar 1860 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 1 Sep 1928 at the age of 68 and was buried in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Isaac James Boatwright and Mary Jane Lampley were married about 1894. Mary Jane Lampley, daughter of Jacob Lampley and Mary McLauren, was born in Jun 1864 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.  She died on 29 Aug 1926 at the age of 62 and was buried in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

4. Nancy Boatwright was born in 1858 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

5. Mary Lucinda Boatwright was born in 1862. She died on 19 Jul 1918 at the age of 56 and was buried in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Mary Lucinda Boatwright and Repsey Edward Tucker were married. Repsey Edward Tucker, son of Repsey Tucker and Nancy Hurst, was born in 1856 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. He died before 1910 at the age of 54.

Sarah Hurst Boatwright died in 1909 and left this WILL[5].

Chesterfield County} I, Sarah Ann [Hurst] Boatwright of said County and State do make this my last will and testament revoking any and all former wills by me made.

1.   I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Lucinda Tucker all of my property of every kind whatever that I may be seized of and possess at the time of my death, it being my intention that the said Mary Lucinda Tucker shall [have] all the property I have at my death. In witness whereof I hereunto sign my name and affix my seal 1st March A. D. 1904

Signed, Sealed and Published and declared by the above named Sarah Ann Boatwright as and for her Last Will and Testament in the presence of us, who in her presence and in the presence of each other and at her request have here unto subscribed our names as witnesses.

Her will (estate #1141) wad probated on 18 October 1909 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Note: FindAGrave Memorial #83583139 has her death date recorded as 8 June 1910. This is obviously wrong. Her Will was probated on 18 October 1909.

Sarah had 3 sons still living at her death but she left her entire estate to Mary Lucinda Tucker, her daughter. No record has been found of her other daughter, Nancy, after the 1870 Census. She is presumed to have died young.
