Mystery Monday~Edmonia Lynn Brown Glass

The early life of Edmonia Lynn (Brown) Glass is a real mystery. Her death certificate (TX) says she was born 12 December 1857, Union County, Arkansas, a daughter of Epps Rivers Brown and Dorinda Adair.^{1 2 3}

Epps Rivers Brown was born in Chesterfield County, SC and migrated with his parents to Lauderdale County, Mississippi.  It was in Mississippi that Epps R. Brown met Dorinda, daughter of Zadock Adair and his wife Sarah. Epps and Dorinda married about 1842 and migrated to Union County Arkansas between 1845 and 1847.⁴
 
Ten years later a daughter, the 7th Child of Epps and Dorinda was born but census shows she was called Nancy or Nannie. It is not known at what time Nancy/Nannie became Edmonia Lynn. She had 8 siblings; three brothers and five sisters. One brother (Weyman) was born after the 1860 Census in 1863.^{5 6}


In 1886, Edmonia Lynne left Arkansas and moved to Navarro, Texas. It was there that she married Absalom Pratt “Abb” Glass on 27 September 1888. Almost 10 years later, Abb and Edmonia had their first child, a son born 25 November 1898 whom they names Brown Pratt Glass.⁷

On 29 May 1911, Absalom Pratt “Abb” Glass died in Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas and was buried in the Faulkenberry Cemetery. His death left Edmonia Lynn a widow with a 12 years, 6 month old child to raise. Edmonia obituary says she was a school teacher in her younger days. In 1920, she was running a boarding house in Groesbeck, Texas. ^{8 9 10} 

She saw her only child, Brown married his lovely bride Sarah Gladys Walker on 5 December 1921 in Groesbeck. Her first grandchild, Jame Lynn “Janie” Glass was born 24 August 1923. She would live to see her granddaughter Janie celebrate her fifteen birthday on 24 August 1938. A week later on 31 August 1938, at the age of 80 years, Edmonia Lynn Brown Glass died at home after a lengthy illness. Her death certificate shows she died of acute circulatory failure and apoplexy (internal bleeding). ^{11 12 13}

She was buried beside her husband, Absalom Pratt “Abb” Glass in the Faulkenberry Cemetery. ¹⁴
From her birth through the 1880 Census she was known as Nancy or Nanny/Nannie. ^{15 16 17 18}
 
From her arrival in Texas in 1886 until the day she died on 31 August 1938 she was known as Edmonia Lynn Brown Glass. ^{19 20 21 22}

Treasure Chest Thursday~Death Date for William H. H. Purvis

I have written several post about William H. H. Purvis and his death in Polk County, Texas. One thing that has been a real puzzle is the death date of William H. H. Purvis. On-line trees at Ancestry lack any research and are mere copies of each other repeating the same erroneous information over and over.

This past summer I had the opportunity to visit my son in Utah and was able to do some research at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

At the top of my list was the death date for William H. H. Purvis and while I did not find the exact date he died, I did find the month and year. The death month and year is contained within Estate packet #139. ¹

                                The State of Texas   Polk County in the County Court July Term 1855,
To his honor Wm. F. Gee chief justice Your petitioner Joseph McGee of Newton County of Texas shows that W. H. H. Purvis of said Polk County departed this life intestate on or about the    day of June last past, and that the nearest relative of said descendant have as yet failed and refused to administer on said estate that said Purvis had in pofefion [possession]  at the time of his death real and personal property to a large amount and is believed  to own it, that your petitioner is the owner and holder of large and bono fide claims against said estate and that he is unable to collect the same or have them litigated without and administrator  of said estate, wherefore, he prays your honor to cause the usual notice be given and at the July term 1855 of your honorable court appoint your petitioner  administrator of said estate as in duty bound & c.

Amanuensis Monday~The Death of William H. H. Purvis

 
Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:

Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Previously, I have written here ¹ about the death of William H. H. Purvis. I stated in that posting that he died after Mar 2, 1855 and before Jan 28, 1856. He most likely died in the county of his residence in Polk County Texas. 

Last month I visited my son in Utah, near Salt Lake City, and on the agenda during that 10 day visit was 3 days at the LDS Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City.

Among my list of items to research was one to find a death date for William H. H. Purvis. While I don’t have an exact date I do have a document that tells me he died in June 1855.

Circumstantial Evidence–Analyzing the Clues

On September 5, 2012 we discussed the family of Epps Rivers Brown and the use if given names versus nicknames.

On one side, Epps was blessed with 7 daughter and 3 sons; on the other hand, now its my burden trying to find these girls after they left home.

One of those daughters was said to be Julia A. Brown. Never mind that available census records do not show a daughter names Julia. In the census, these girls are listed by nicknames NOT by their given names.
I have a FGS that shows that Joel H. Goodwin married Julia A. Brown on 26 Feb 1879 in Oauchita County, Arkansas.

A copy of the actual marriage license was found on-line at FamilySearch.org. [1]

Enlarge section of the bottom portion of this license show that Joel H. Goodwin and Julia A. Brown were  married on 26 Feb. 1879 as shown on the above FGS snippet. [2]

This is actual proof that Joel H. Goodwin married Julia A. Brown and the 1880 census[3] clearly shows them living as husband and wife. But, there is no proof here that Julia A. Brown is in fact a daughter of Epps Rivers Brown. The licensee does show that Julia A. Brown was of Union County, Arkansas and that is where Epps River and Dorinda Adair Brown was living.

A Rivers Family History Book[4] hand written by Minnie Sanders Rivers about 1929 in Chesterfield County (origin of Brown family) shows that Epps & Dorinda did have a daughter who first married Joel H. Goodwin and then a second marriage to James Buckner. But, Minnie shows this daughter to be named – Dora.

Lines 209 – Dora and 210- Nannie are two of the daughters of Epps Rivers Brown and his wife Dorinda Adair. Evidence points to both of these girls moving to Texas.

Item 210 shows that “Nannie “married Al Glass. Nannie is actually Edmonia Lynn Brown and she married Absolom Pratt “Abb” Glass on 27 Sep 1888 in Navarro, Texas.[5]

Conversely, James M. Buckner and his wife were also found in Texas but his wife was going by the name of Doanie or Donnie Brown Buckner. Her Texas death certificate #4376 list J. M. Buckner as her husband and E. R. Brown and Dorinda Ardan [Adair] as her parents.[6]

Is Julia A. Brown and Donnie Buckner the same person? I think that circumstantial evidence point to the likelihood that these two individuals are the same person. However, the only link that connect these events are a 1929 handwritten family history that states “Dora married Joel H. Goodwin and Jim Buckner. Regardless of the name of the daughter, the author of this document was clearly stating that the girl was twice married, first to Joel H. Goodwin and second to Jim Buckner.

Another piece of evidence compounding this circumstantial case is a marriage between J. M. Buckner to Julia Evelyn Bradley.

It's certain that the ending to this story has not been fully told. There is either two J. M. Buckner's here or the man is getting married quite often. The case is not solved. More research is needed.

Wednesday’s Child – Infant Twins

William J. A. Hurst was born 16 January 1853[1] in Chesterfield, South Carolina.  He moved with his Father and Mother to Collin County, Texas between 1870 and 1880. He married Susanna H. Burch, daughter of James Clothier Burch and Celia Rebecca Johnson, on 13 January 1881 in Collin County, Texas. It likely they knew each other back in Chesterfield and may have traveled together during the migration to Texas. 

William and Susannah had a set of twins on 25 August 1881. The twins did not survive. Records indicate that one twin died the same day and the other twin died 3 days later on 28 Aug 1881. No record has been found to indicate the names or gender of the twins.

Chambersville Cemetery Transcript[4]

William and Susannah were married 56 years when Susannah died in August 1937. William died a year and one half later in January 1939. There is no indication that William and Susanna had any other children after the birth of these twins.

There is no Divorce Records on-line prior to 1923 so they were not checked. This adds two more names to the mix – Julia A. Brown and Julie E. Bradley.

Is Julie A. Brown the daughter of Epps R. Brown and if she is why isn’t she listed in the Census;  or maybe one of the nicknames used is Julie nickname – Lizzie, Donnie or Nannie?

Remember the booklet by Minnie ,; it say that Dora married Joel Goodwin & Jim Buckner

171.   Dora; b.__________;d.__________; m. (1) Joel Goodwin; m. (2) Jim Buckner. Lived in Western Texas.

The marriage License say that Joel Goodwin married Julia A. Brown , born 1853 in Union County, Arkansas on the 25 February 1879 in Ouachita County, Arkansas.[1]

Jim Buckner married married Julia E. Bradley, born 1855 in Union County, Arkansas on the 26 March 1880 in Union County, Arkansas.[2]

 

In the 1900 Coryell County, Texas Census; [3]James Buckner lists his wife as  Elizabeth J. Buckner, age 46, born Mar 1853 in Arkansas – Married 6 years (1894)

By 1920 the Couple is back to James and Julia; Nolan County, Texas.[4]

Then in 1930 Nolan, Texas, the last census they are listed in, the Couple is listed as James B.  & Julia A.[5]

Julia – Elizabeth-Donnie – dies first and her death certificate [6]shows her husband to be the wife of J. M. Buckner and her parents to be E. R. Rivers and Dorinda Adair.

I still do not know which of Epps Rivers Brown daughters this is; but, I am clearly convinced that all these ladies are just one lady with multiple names.  I have networked with several other individuals closer associated with this line than I am and was told by one of these individuals that the daughter had to get out of Arkansas quick due to some sort of trouble in 1893-1894. 

While this is hearsay the multiple uses of names lend some credence to the story. The date of the trouble story (1893-1894) coincide with the reported years of marriage (6)(1894) in the 1900 Census; so is Elizabeth J. Bucker  full name is Elizabeth Julie Brown Buckner? There was a Lizzie Brown but census shows her to be born in 1859 and it is reported she died young.  Only Nannie & Lucy were born around 1853.
