Michael Hezekiah "Mike" Brock and Timmie Smith were married in 1879 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.¹⁴ Timmie Smith, daughter of Isaac Benjamin Smith and Rebecca Jane Boatwright, was born on 20 May 1861 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. ^{15 16 17 18} She died on 15 Apr 1922 at the age of 60 and was buried on 16 Apr 1922 at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^{19 20 21}

Probate File #778–Eli P. Brock

A migration from Chesterfield County, South Carolina occurred around 1818. Many of the local families left with Gilbert Purvis and his brother James F. Purvis. Among the families were  Brock’s, Purvis’, Holifield and many others. They migrated down through Georgia into Clarke County, Alabama and eventually settling in and around Hinds, Rankin and Smith Counties, Mississippi.

Joseph Purvis, husband of Elizabeth Cook was among this group. So was Moses Holifield of Anson County and his wife Milly Rivers of Chesterfield. Joseph Purvis died about 1842. By 1844, his wife Elizabeth had re-married to Richard Oldham/Odom most likely to help care for her young children. Records point to a rather large family for Joseph & Elizabeth.

Also among the group was Eli P. Brock. Eli P. Brock died in Hinds County Mississippi in 1844. No record has been found that would indicate that Eli was married; so without documentation I choose to state that he was a single man. When Eli P. Brock died Moses Brock was appointed as administrator of his estate.

Now, based on the research that I have done Moses Brock and Eli P. Brock was first cousins. Moses Brock father was William Brock married to Charlotte (LNU). William and Charlotte migrated before 1818 to Louisiana.

In 1844, Eli P. Brock died and left a small estate with few assets (one lot of sundries $6; one yearling $3) and a lot of liability. It got so bad that Moses Brock petitioned the Court to declare the estate insolvent and it was thus order in Court on the 23rd June 1846, Hinds County, Mississippi.

A hearing on Final settlement of the estate took place during January term 1851 with notice that final settlement would be adjudicated at the April term 1851.

To date, very little information has been found about Eli P. Brock. The estate notice above confirmed my assertion that he was a single man and indicates to me that Samuel Brock, Esquire Brock, Benjamin Brock, and all other unknown heirs who are non-residents are siblings. Samuel, Esquire and Benjamin are the names of Brock men who remained in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Samuel would be Samuel W. . Brock, b. 1796. died after 1880, married Martha.

Benjamin would be Benjamin Brock, b. 1790, died bef 1870 married Temperance and Esquire is Squire H. Brock, b. 5 Feb. 1805, d. 10 Feb. 1888; married Rachel Parker.

Eli. P. Brock estate can be found in Hinds County, Mississippi and on LDS Family History Library Film #1749976, Probate File #778 and also on Mississippi State Archives Film MDAH #10401.[2]

Eli P. Brock is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

Tombstone Tuesday–Carrie Parr Easler

Carrie A. Parr was born on 23 Dec 1885 in Bishopville, Sumter Co., SC.^{1 2} She died on 24 Feb 1970 at the age of 84 in Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.³ She was buried on 26 Feb 1970 at Elmwood Memorial Gardens, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.^{4 5 6}

Carrie A. Parr and Reuben Harvey Easler were married on 13 May 1906. Reuben Harvey Easler, son of Alger Easler and Sarah Reynolds, was born on 14 Nov 1886. He died on 21 Oct 1947 at the age of 60 at Columbia Hospital in Columbia, Richland, South Carolina. Reuben was buried on 22 Oct 1947 at Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia, Richland, South Carolina. He served in the military.

Reuben Harvey Easler and Carrie A. Parr had the following children:

i. Alva Leroy Easler was born on 8 Apr 1907 in Columbia, Lexington, South Carolina. He died on 20 Feb 1909 at the age of 1 in Columbia, Lexington, South Carolina.
ii. Carroll H. Easler was born on 25 May 1909 in Columbia, Lexington, South Carolina. He died on 2 May 1991 at the age of 81 in Clinton, Anderson, Tennessee.
iii. Talley Avery "Buddy" Easler, born 6 Feb 1911; married Anne B.; married Margaret Elizabeth Adams; died 12 Mar 1999, Lexington, Lexington County, South Carolina.
iv. Dorothy Easler, married Thomas Outlaw.
 
Carrie Parr was the daughter of  Tempy A. Brock and Samuel Merkerson Parr. She was the granddaughter of Benjamin Brock and Jane Freeman.The demise of her grandparents is a mystery.

Which Source Document Do You Believe?

I came across another dilemma this week while doing some research to better documents some of my sources.  In this case I was researching my maternal line – my Brock Ancestry. 

Michael Hezekiah "Mike" Brock is my 1^st Grand Uncle. He is the son of Hezekiah Brock and Sarah "Sallie" Morris. He was born on 20 January 1853 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. He had 5 brothers, no sisters. He was the second oldest son, my great Grandfather Benjamin Franklin being the oldest child.

According to Michael Hezekiah Brock estate folder (#860) he died 2 Jan 1926, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. [1]

Then we have the South Carolina death certificate for Michael Brock showing that he died 2 January 1927.[2]

So which death date is correct? The estate file (#860) says that Mike Brock died the 2^nd January 1926 while the SC Death certificate states that he died the 2^nd January 1927. A search for an obituary resulted negative results.  

In situations like this, where we have conflicting information, the Genealogical Proof Standard requires that a reasonably exhaustive search is made of all records and that the conflict be resolved.  

Two other secondary sources are available related to birth and death info. They are a cemetery survey book for the county cemeteries and FindaGrave memorial # 60843661.[3] The FindaGrave memorial does not contain a photo of the tombstone but does have the death date recorded as 2 January 1927 and shows that Mike is buried in Zion cemetery in Pageland, South Carolina. 

On the other hand, the cemetery survey was a comprehensive inventory of all cemeteries within the county and was completed in the mid -1990's. The Cemetery Survey Book has Mike Brock listed on page 813. The tombstone only contains the year of birth – 1853 and the year of death – 1927. [4]

Not enough information has been found to totally resolve the conflicting information for Mike's death date. Two of the above sources are secondary sources; but, it evident that the FindaGrave info came from the death certificate. For the time being, I personally think the death date is 2 January 1927 but will leave the death date unresolved and open to additional research.

Land Deed Confirms Genealogy Research

I have written previously about the value of land deeds in genealogy. One of my primary lines is the BROCK surname. My Grand Mother was a Brock. All the Brocks in Chesterfield County, South Carolina are descendants of a man named Johan Valentine Brack/Brock.

I have researched to some degree every Brock in Chesterfield County. Today to show you the value of  land deeds we will look at William P. Brock, his wife and family. My research on this family resulted in the following information.

William P. Brock was born about 1827 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹ He appeared in the census in 1860 & 1870 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina.^{2 3} William died after 1870 and before 1880.

William P. Brock and Easter E. Copeland were married about 1853. Easter E. Copeland, daughter of Archibald Copeland, was born about 1837 in SC. ^{4 5} Her death date is also unknown but she has not been located after the 1870 Census.

William P. Brock and Easter E. Copeland had the following children:

i.   Wincy E. Brock was born in 1854 in SC. ^{6 7.}  Not found past 1870 Census.

ii.   Peter Preston Brock  Sr., born 2 Feb 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Margaret Jane Sellers; married Elizabeth Jane Eddins; died 8 Feb 1940, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

iii.   William Thomas Brock, born abt 1855, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Margaret Ellen Newby, abt 1880, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 5 Mar 1920, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

iv.   Samuel Stonewall Jackson Brock, born 16 Oct 1858, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Laura Cornelius Teal; died 3 Oct 1942, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

v.   Delia Ardella Brock, born 7 May 1866, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Edward Chambers Teal; died 24 Apr 1942, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

vi.   Joel Washington Brock, born 18 May 1869, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mary Jane Brock; died 24 Jan 1949, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

So based on my research over the past years William and Easter had 6 children.

Now, let's take a look at the Land Deed I copied today at the Chesterfield Court House from Deed Book 5, Page 520.

                                Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Brock of the State and County aforesaid in consideration of the sum of Fifty dollars to me in hand paid by W. P. Brock agent for Wincy E. Brock Peter P. Brock W. T. Brock S. S. J. Brock Ardelia Brock & Joel W. Brock sons and daughter of W. P. Brock and Easter E. Brock also of the State and County aforesaid have granted bargained sold release and by these presents do bargain sell and       unto the above named children of W. P.      all that tract or parcel of land situate in the State and County aforesaid on the South West side of big Westfield Creek being part of a tract of land conveyed by William Pegues to Samuel White by deed having date the seventh of November A. This land deed confirmed the research previously completed on this family. The Grandfather Samuel Brock is conveying 100 acres to his six grandchildren and their Father W. P. Brock is acting as agent for his children. Data within the land deed matches information found on this family in the U. S. population census.

Joel Washington Brock - When Did He Die?

Today, I need your help in determining when my 1st cousin 4 times removed died?

Joel Washington Brock is enumerated in the 1850[1] and 1860[2] Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Joel Washington was born about 1829 according to the 1850 census and the 1860 Census showed that he was born at least 6 years later or about 1835. he was the son of Samuel W. and Martha Brock.

When he died he left a large estate. That estate file can be found on Family Search.com, Estate Folder 55, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

In contrast the only published death date, though a secondary source is "Broken Fortunes"[3], by Randolph Kirkland, Jr. On page 39, he states that Joel Washington Brock died 1 March 1865.

If he died 1 March 1865, why was his estate being administered before he died?

Obviously, this secondary source is WRONG.

In the Book, "Roll of the Dead" by William Rivers[5]  he states that Joel W. Brock died in 1865. The following Brock's are listed in the Roll of the Dead.

Joel's estate can be found in Folder 55 of the South Carolina, Probate Records, Files and Loose Papers, 1732-1964[6]

Letters of administrations were initiated and approved on 16 January 1865; so Joel Washington Brock was deceased by that date. 

The estate consists of approximately 47 images. There are 6 documents within the estate dated 16 January 1865 which is the earliest date within the folder.

It's quite obvious for data provided that Joel W. Brock died before 16 January 1865 thus making his death date of 1 March 1865 recorded in the Book "Broken Fortunes" to be inaccurate.

Additional followed-up is required.

Surname Saturday - Wallace - Ross

 

Today's surnames are Wallace and Ross. Two of the children of Henry Hampton and Sarah Ann Ross Wallace married into my Purvis and Brock lines. Nancy Elizabeth Wallace Purvis is my grand aunt; having married my grand uncle John W. Purvis.  William Thomas Wallace married Rosella Brock. Rosella is my first cousin twice removed.

Henry Hampton Wallace was born about 1856 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He is counted in the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census. ^{1 2 3}  He died on 21 May 1927 at the age of 71 in Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Henry was buried on 23 May 1927 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. 

Henry Hampton Wallace and Sarah Ann Ross were married about 1870 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Sarah Ann Ross, daughter of John Ross and Mrs. Brigman, was born about 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. ^{4 5 6}  She is the sister mentioned in the article on James Ross finding his lost brother written about earlier in this blog. She died on 4 Dec 1918 at the age of 63 in Anson, North Carolina.

James A. Brock (1829-1899)

James Albert Brock was born on 6 Dec 1829 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^[1][2] James Albert Brock and his family moved from Chesterfield, SC to Florida between 1857 and 1860. He appears in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Censuses in Florida.^[3][5][6] He served in the Civil War enlisting on 20 Dec 1861 in Bronson, Florida.^[4] He died on 30 Mar 1899 at the age of 69 in Alachua Co., Florida.^[7] James was buried in Midway Church of Christ Cemetery on 31 Mar 1899, Bell, Gilchrist Co., Florida.^[8][9]

James Albert Brock and Mary Jane White were married about 1855. Mary Jane White, daughter of Samuel White, was born about 1833 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^[10]  She died about 1869 at the age of 36. Mary Jane is not listed with the family in the 1870 Census but a new daughter Jane is listed. It's likely that Mary Jane died of complication related to childbirth. No tombstone has been found for Mary Jane Brock.

           i.   Mary Ann Brock, born about 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Moses Fowler, about 1879, Alachua Co. Fl.

           ii.   Squire Lafayette Brock, born 7 Sep 1857, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mary M. Silas, about 1884; died 19 Feb 1934, Chiefland, Levy, Florida.

           iii.   Samuel Washington Brock, born 7 Sep 1857, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Penny Cannon Rucker, 26 Aug 1885, Gainesville, Florida.

           iv.   Sarah Jane Brock, born May 1861, Florida; married Kendrick Peter Cook, 31 Jan 1878; died 16 Mar 1925, Newberry, Alachua, Florida.

            v.   Jane Brock, born about 1869 in Alachua County, Florida. ^[11]

James Albert Brock and Georgia Ann Boytt were married in Feb 1870 in Levyville, Levy County, Florida. Georgia Ann Boytt was born on 19 Jan 1838. ^[12] She appeared in the census in 1900. Georgia died on 20 Jul 1918 at the age of 78.

James Albert Brock and Georgia Ann Boytt had the following children:

           i.   Rachel Ellen Brock, born 3 Aug 1871, Judson, Levy, Florida, United States; married John Lancaster Jamerson; died 8 Dec 1956.

           ii.   Georgia Drew Brock, born Aug 1876, Levy County, Florida; married Henry F. Booker; died 1938.
