The Ben P. & Mary Eleanor (Hurst) Stiles Family

Benjamin Purtle "Ben" Stiles was born on 22 Jul 1877 in Kentucky. His parents, Charley and Sarah Ellen Neff Stiles had moved their family from Kentucky to Collins County, Texas sometime before 1900. Ben, as he was known, was a farmer and the 1930 Census shows that he owned his farm.

Mary Eleanor Hurst, daughter of Joseph Thurman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis, was born on 18 Nov 1888 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Joseph Thruman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis, left Chesterfield with his parents, PJ Hurst headed west to Arkansas in the early 1890’s.

By June 1900, Joe Hurst, a widower, can be found in Collins County, Texas. Family folklore says his wife, Amanda J. (Davis) Hurst passed away on the trip between Cleveland County, Arkansas and Collins County, Texas. No record of her death or tombstone has been found.

vi. Infant Stiles was buried in May 1918 in Collin County, Texas. He was born on 7 May 1918 in Collin County, Texas. He died on 7 May 1918 at the age of 0 in Collin County, Texas.

vii. Joseph W. Stiles was born on 9 Mar 1923 in Collin County, Texas. He was buried in Apr 1923 in Collin County, Texas. He died on 28 Apr 1923 at the age of 0 in Collin County, Texas.

viii. Bennie Ervin Stiles, born 24 Jan 1921, Collin County, Texas; married Betty Ruth Wells, 1 Apr 1949, Dallas, Collin, Texas; died 4 Feb 2003, Henderson, Clark, Nevada.

Ben Stiles died on 1 Feb 1956 at the age of 78, and buried 3 Feb 1956 at Cottage Hill Cemetery in Celina, Collin, Texas. Mary Eleanor (Hurst) Stiles died on 13 May 1943, age of 54, and was buried on 14 May 1943 at Cottage Hill in Collin County, Texas.

Mary Eleanor (Hurst) Stiles is my 2^nd Cousin Twice Removed.

The Last Will and Testament of John Bittle

Today we will look at the last will and testament of John Bittle. Many families both in Anson County, NC and Chesterfield county, SC are descendants of John Bittle and his wife Mary.  Mary’s last name is unknown but many researchers think her surname may be Gathings.

The State of South Carolina,

                                      In the name of God, Amen.
I John Bittle of the District of Chesterfield and State aforesaid,being of sound and disposing mind and understanding, do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, in manner and form following viz:
First_It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Second_ I give and bequeath to my sons Irvin Bittle, Burrel R. Bittle and John W. Bittle each Five dollars.
Third_I give and bequeath to my daughter, Elmira Long, (widow of Edmund Long), Mary Ulsey Liles (wife of Thomas H. Liles), Eliza Jane Brantley(wife of Wm. P. Brantley) and Narcissa Riley (Wife of Alex. H. Riley) each Five dollars.
Fourth_It is my will and desire that my Executors hereinafter named shall if necessary, dispose of such of my personal property,as to them shall seem best, to the advantage my estate, in paying of my just Creditors, and funeral expenses, and the legacies bequeathed respectively to my sons and daughters above named.
Fifth_I give and bequeath to my two daughters, Roxana Bittle and Emily Vick (widow of Albert Vick, deceased) the whole of the remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to have, hold and enjoy the same jointly during their natural lives, and upon the death of either of my said daughters, (Roxana or Emily), it is my will and desire that, that portion of my estate to which she was entitled at her death, shall go to the one then surviving, (Roxana or Emily) and at the death of the other, it is my will and desire that the wholeof my estate both real and personal be equally divided among all of my heirs,share and share alike, my Grandson Franklin Bittle son of my daughter EmilyVick  taking an equal share with the other of my heirs the child or children of any deceased parent, taking the share to which his, her or their parents would have been entitled if living.
Sixth_It is my will and desire that my two daughters Roxana Bittle & Emily Vick shall remain and live together on my estate, and in case either of them should marry, it is then my will and desire that, that portion of my estate to which she was then holding and enjoying, shall go to the use and benefit of the other, and in the event that both of my said daughters should marry, it is then my will and desire, that my estate real and personal be divided among all of my heirs in the same manner as prescribed in the fifth clause of this my will---
Seventh_I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my friend David Rivers, & A. M. Streater Executors and my daughter Roxana Bittle Executrix to this my last will and testament.

It’s Family Time~The Duncan Daniel Douglas Family

Duncan Daniel Douglas was born on 4 Sep 1843 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was a son of John Duncan McLaurin Douglas and his wife, Harriet Newell McFarland. Duncan Daniel served in the Civil War with Company E, 21st SC Infantry, enlisting on 20 December 1861. He was captured on 27 February 1865 at Lynch Creek, South Carolina and paroled 6 March 1865 at the same place. Duncan can be found in the Census for Chesterfield County in the Court House District.

Pvt. Duncan Daniel Douglas and Lucy Anne Sellers were married about 1863 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Lucy Anne Sellers, daughter of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis, was born on 7 Sep 1841 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Lucy was the youngest of 6 children. She had an older sister and 4 brothers.

Daniel Duncan Douglas died on 17 Mar 1914 at the age of 70 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was buried in the Hurst Cemetery on 18 Mar 1914 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Lucy Anne (Sellers) Douglas died on 2 Jun 1919 at the age of 77 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was buried with her husband in the Hurst cemetery on 3 Jun 1919.

Duncan Daniel Douglas and Lucy Anne Sellers had the following children:

Marriage of Lillie Mae Sellers

Lillie Mae Sellers was borne about 1872 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Her Mother, Arminda Bell (Starns) Sellers, second wife of James Calhoun Sellers, died shortly after her birth. James Calhoun Sellers married for a 3rd time to Elizabeth Jane Manley. About this same time, the father of Arminda Bell (Starns) Sellers and Lillie Mae’s grandfather also passed away. His death resulted in the following Madison County Court Document transcribed here:

To the County Court of Madison County, Tenn.

Your petitioner would respectfully represent that his daughter L. M. [Lillie Mae] Sellers aged about 8 years and John Starns a Stepson of your Petitioner aged over 20 years are entitled to a legacy from the estate of James Montgomery dec’d amounting to about the sum of $12.50 each which to reduce to <illegible> render it necessary that Said minor children have a Guardian appointed for them. Your petitioner therefore prays the Court to appoint him their Guardian and he will ever pray &c. this 1^st Aug 1881.

Note: This document and the 1880 Census are the only documents found proving the age of Lillie Mae Sellers.

Sometime after this action, James Calhoun Sellers moved his family to Fannin County, Texas. There on 21 October 1894, Lillie Mae Sellers, age 22, married William M. Witt, age unknown. This marriage is the end of the line for information on William M. Witt and Lillie Mae Sellers with one exception. On 8 November 1899,  L. M. Witt was named in a Land Deed forcing the sale of  48 acres of Land. (Deed Book 70, Page 573-575).

    Know all men by these presents, that whereas, by virtue of a certain Order of Sale issued out of the District Court of the County of Fannin in favor of Wills and Smith vs M. A. Sellers and L. M. Witt on certain Judgment and Decree of Sale, rendered on the 15th day of August 1899, and directed and delivered to me as Sheriff of Fannin County, commanding me to seize and sell the premises described in said Order of Sale, I, W. W. Ridling, Sheriff as aforesaid, did, upon the 6th day of  October 1899...

It‘s Family Time~The Calvin T. Eddins Family

Calvin T. Eddins was born in Feb 1820 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Wilcox, Alabama. He died between 1850 and 1860 in Butler County, Alabama.

Calvin T. Eddins and Lucy Ruth Dailey were married on 23 Dec 1846 in Monroe, Alabama. Lucy Ruth Dailey, daughter of Alexander Dailey and Elizabeth [LNU], was born about 1827. We know she died before 1860 at the age of 33. The three children can be found with their grandparents, Alexander & Elizabeth Dailey in the 1860 Census for Monroe County, Alabama. 

Calvin T. Eddins and Lucy Ruth Dailey had the following children:

        i.    Elizabeth Eddins was born about 1847.
         ii.    William Eddins was born about 1848.
         iii.    George Wilson Eddins, born 5 May 1855; died 1 Feb 1897.

Veterans Day 2021-Remembering Willie B. Johns

Pvt. Willie B. Johns

b. 7 April 1919

d. 19 July 1989

Willie Benjamin Johns, borne 7 April 1919 was the son of Julius Johns and Mary Catherine “Mamie” Brock.  Willie was a married man with one son, Willie David, when war was declared in 1941.

On 15 May 1943, Willie enlisted at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and was assigned Army Serial Number#34655672. His enlistment shows that the Enlistment [was] for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law.  

While in the Army, Willie served as a cook for his unit. His unit participated in one of the last major battles of World War II – The Battle of the Bulge. 

The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Counteroffensive, was a major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II which took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945. Wikipedia

The War in the European Theater ended on 2 September 1945. But, do remember that on August 14, 1945, the Japanese had surrendered, effectively ending World War II.

As a teenager I spent some wonderful times on “Hinson Hill” with my Uncle Willie and Aunt Ruby and their children, my cousins. 

Willie Johns is my Mother’s brother and was always known to me as Uncle Willie.

Amanda E. Previtte was born on 19 May 1898 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.  She was a daughter 

of James Thomas Previtte and Mary Hulda Davis. She had 7 siblings; 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

At age 15, Amanda and Colon Campbell were married on 4 August 1912 in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina.

Colon Douglas Campbell Sr., son of Horry Franklin Campbell and Nancy Ardelia Davis, was born on 28 Feb 1890 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

    i.     Leo Wilson Campbell, born 9 Aug 1914, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mabel Smith Gualtney; married Naomi Gibson; died 5 Jul 1970, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.

Sadly on 15 Feb 1922, at the age of 23 Amanda, also known as Mandy, suffered an epileptic seizure which took her life. She was buried at Zoar UMC Cemetery on 16 Feb 1922 in Chesterfield County. Her son Leo was just past his 7th birthday.

After the loss of Amanda and with a small child to care for Colon married a young lady known as Lessie Eunice Davis on 19 January 1929. Lessie Eunice was a daughter of John Robert "Bobby" Davis, Sr. and his wife, Mary Jane "Mamie" Hunt.

Amanda E. Previtte Campbell is my 1st Cousin Twice Removed.

Proof Noah Sellers Married Timney Parsons

In most of the Sothern States finding proof of marriage before the 1900’s can be a daunting task. Over the years I have resorted to browsing and reading Land Deeds, in many cases, to try to determine who an individual married. Case in point is a North Carolina Land Deed between Noah Sellers and Roderick Shaw.

This particular land deed contains this very informative sentence:

...It being the undivided distributive share of Timney the wife of the said Noah Sellers in and of all the Lands of which her Father Abbington Parsons died seized and possessed Situate lying and being as aforesaid in Anson County in the State of North Carolina...

Noah Sellers & Wife to Roderick Shaw & S. Ricketts

This Indenture made this ____ day of September in the year of our Lord 1846 Between Noah sellers & Timney his wife of the one part and  Roderick Shaw of the other part all of the sate of South Carolina in Chesterfield district. Witnesseth that the said Noah sellers & Timney his wife for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five dollars to them in hand paid by the said  Roderick Shaw before the Signing and Sealing of these presents the receipts and payments whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained sold conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do bargain sell convey and confirm to the said  Roderick Shaw his heirs and afsigns a certain piece or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Anson in the State of North Carolina adjoining the South Carolina line and adjoining the Lands of James Parsons and others, it being the undivided distributive share of Timney the wife of the said Noah Sellers in and of all the Lands of which her Father Abbington Parsons died seized and possessed Situate lying and being as aforesaid in Anson County in the State of North Carolina which distributive share is supposed to be about 30 acres more or less  to have and to hold unto the said Roderick Shaw his heirs, Administrators Executors & afsigns forever & the said Noah Sellers & his wife Timney Sellers doth hereby convent and agree to and with the said Roderick Shaw his heirs and afsigned and doth warrant Secure and forever defend the rights, title, Interest and claim in of & to said Land unto the said Roderick Shaw his heirs and afsigns against themselves their heirs Executors Administrators and afsignd also against the lawful claim or claims of any and all persons whomsoever. In witnefs whereof the said Noah Sellers & his wife Timney have hereunto set their hands and Seals the year and date first above written Signed Sealed  and delivered in presence of us
