52 Cousins~Aurilla Jane (Sellers) Wallace

Aurilla Jane Sellers was born on 2 Aug 1869, a daughter of Andrew Washington Sellers and his wife Catherine Pinkney Wallace of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Henry A. Wallace was born on 12 Sep 1853 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

He first appeared in the 1880 Chesterfield County Census with a young bride, age 16, called Sarah [LNU].

1880 CENSUS: Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina; NARA microfilm publication T9, Roll: 1225; Enumeration District: 002; Page: #287A; Line: #46; Dwelling: #525, Family: #529; Henry WALLACE, Male, Head, age 25, Farm Labor, born in NC and Sarah WALLACE, Wife, age 16, born in SC.

By 1891, we know that Henry A. Wallace has married Aurilla Jane Sellers, a daughter of Andrew Washington Sellers and his wife Catherine Pinkney Wallace of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Their fist-born, a son, Herbert Rosel Wallace, arrived on 6 April 1893. Sarah [LNU] is nowhere to be found so it is assumed she passed away.

Aurilla Jane Sellers and Henry A. Wallace were married about 1891 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina,

Henry A. Wallace and Aurilla Jane Sellers had the following children:

i. Herbert Rosel Wallace was born on 6 Apr 1893 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ii. Jesse Colton "Jay C." Wallace was born on 29 Apr 1895 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

After the birth of two children, Aurilla Jane (Sellers) Wallace died abt 1895/96 at the age of 26.

The Sellers History by Kate (Sellers)(Eddins)Kimery provided a specific date, but it was not sourced.

SOURCE: Sellers History written by Ella Katherine (Kate) Sellers, Eddins, Kimery.

Now, Henry has lost two wives in a very short period of time. He never remarried after losing Rilla Jane.

We can see in the 1900 Census that the two children and their dad, Henry A. Wallace are living in the household of Andrew Washington Sellers and his wife Catherine Pinkney Wallace of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

1900 CENSUS: Wolf Pit, Richmond County, North Carolina; Roll: 1213;   Enumeration District: 99; FHL microfilm: 1241213; Page: 11A/163(stamped); Line 34, Dwelling 195, Family 195; Andrew W. SELLERS, male, age 55, born Nov 1844 in SC; Catherine SELLERS, Wife, age 58, born Apr 1842 in SC; Married 34 years, 8 children, 5 living; Mary E. SELLERS, Daughter, age 27, born May 1873 in SC; Jesse SELLERS, Son, age 23, born Apr 1875 in SC; Alonzo SELLERS, Son, age 22, born Oct 1877 in SC; Andrew SELLERS, Son, age 21, born Apr 1879 in SC; Francis SELLERS, Daughter, age 17, born Dec 1882 in SC; Herbert WALLACE, GrandSon, age 7, born Apr 1893 in SC; Jesse WALLACE, GrandSon, age 7, born Apr 1895 in SC and Henry WALLACE, Son-in-Law, age 40, born Mar 1860 in SC.

Henry A. Wallace died 23 February 1918 at the age of 64. No death certificate has been found for Henry, but I did find a short Death Notice.

Death Notice:

Mr. Henry A. Wallace, well-known here, died on Feb. 23rd and was buried at Zoar church on the 25th, the Rev. B. J. Guess conducting the funeral service. Mr. Wallace was in his 65th year.

Military Thursday~Sgt. William E. Sellers

 CHESTERFIELD BOY HERO

SERGT. WILLIAM E. SELLERS HONORED FOR BRAVERY UNDER FIRE. SHOT ONE, STUCK ONE

Sergt. William E. Sellers, of Company I, 118th Infantry, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in France, on October 8th, 1918.

The notification sent out by the War Department, a copy of which was received by The Advertiser, rends:

"The Commander-in-Chief, American Expeditionary Forces in France, in the name of the President of the United States, has awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergt. William E. Sellers, of Company I, 118th Infantry, for extraordinary heroism in action near Brancourt, France, on October 8th, 1918. While Sergt. Sellers' platoon was advancing he, on his own initiative, rushed ahead of the line and flanking an enemy machine gun post, shot one of the crew and bayoneted the other. His action saved his platoon from heavy casualties. His home address is Chesterfield, S.C."

Sergt. Sellers, when told of the honor that had been bestowed upon him in appreciation of his heroic behavior, declared that he had done anything that any of the boys Wouldn't have done if they had thought of it and had had the chance. He is as modest and retiring now us he was fearless and daring in the time and danger, as indeed all heroes seem to be.

Sergt. Sellers was born in this county, being the son of Mr. Charles R. Sellers and Mrs. Sarah E. Sellers. They live in the Spencer section, about four miles from town, where father and son are engaged in farming.

Distinguished Service Cross (United States):

This is the second highest military honor that can be given to a member of the U.S. Army[3]. It is awarded for extreme gallantry at risk of life in combat with an enemy force[4]. During World War I, over 6,000 men were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, including several American Indians. Some service members were decorated multiple times for separate acts of valor.

William Edmond Sellers was born on 12 Nov 1893, a son of Charles Riley Sellers and Sara Ellen Brock. He died on 8 Apr 1970 at the age of 77 in Alexandria, Virginia.

William Edmond Sellers is my 2nd Cousin Once Removed.

52 Cousins~The James Calvin and Charlotte (Raley) Hinson Family

Charlotte “Lottie” Raley was borne about 1816, a daughter of James Raley and Ester “Espsey” Eddins. Ester “Espsey” Eddins is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt. Ester “Espsey” Eddins parents were William Eddins and his first Wife Nancy [LNU]. Pre Civil War records for Chesterfield County were burned during the Civil War and all marriage dates are based on the birth of first known child.

James Raley and Ester “Espsey” Eddins were married abt 1815 based on the birth of Charlotte “Lottie” Raley in 1816. We know that James and Espsey were married before 29th Novr 1823 because they are mentioned in the Eddins "Bill of Complaint."

Snippet from “Bill of Complaint”

William departed this life sometime in the year one thousand and eight hundred and twenty-two intestate leaving his said widow your orators William Edings, Richard Edings, and Riley Edings and your oratrixes Aly Adams, Gilley Sellars, Espsey Raley, Tempe Knight and Margaret Sellars and Jenny Knotts the wife of James Knotts his sons and daughters surviving him…

We find James Raley, a farmer, and his wife Espsey in 1830 Kershaw County.

Family composition is:

James Raley, male, age 50-59 [1771-1780]

1 – Females, Wife –Espsey, age 30 – 39 [1791 –1800]

1 Female – Daughter, age, Under 5: [1825-1830)

1 Female – Daughter, age, 10-14 [1816-1820] Charlotte

1 Female – Daughter, age, 15-19 [1811-1815]

In 1840, James Raley is a farmer, and his wife Espsey are in Lancaster County, South Carolina.

Family composition is:

James Raley, male, age 50-59 [1781-1790]

1 Female, Wife – Espsey, age 40 – 49 [1791 –1800]

1 Female – Daughter, age, 5-9 [1831-1835]

We know that Charlotte left home prior to 1840 and that matches our data.

Charlotte “Lottie” Raley married John Calvin Hinson about 1835. This date is based on their known 1st borne, Harriett Hinson, about 1836.

John Calvin Hinson and Charlotte “Lottie” Raley had a large family. Their children were:

Harriet Hinson-(1836-1897)

John Marion Hinson-(1840-1863)

Andrew Newton Hinson-(1841-1898)

William Jasper Hinson-(1842-1916)

Calvin Rayley Hinson-(1846-1870)

Martha Nancy Hinson-(1848-1933)

Sarah J. Hinson-(1850-1915)

Rev. John Hinson-(1851-1921)

Elizabeth A. "Sallie" Hinson-(1857-    )

George & Margaret (Keppel) Earnhart Migration to Bedford County, Tennessee

Margaret Keppel, daughter of Peter Keppel, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Grobb, is my 4th Great Grand Aunt. Margaret Keppel married George Earnhart, born 9 June 1759. While I have not found a marriage date for them, I believe they were married before 1803.

The 1810 Census for Rowan County has 3 George Earnhart's; two Juniors and one Senior. The Organ Lutheran Church Records has a record of 5 children born to George Earnhart between 1803 and 1812 but none of the listings names a mother or wife of George Earnhart.

One these George Earnhart, was borne 9 June 1759, a son of Phillip Earnhart and Elizabeth, his wife. On-line trees show that he was married to Elizabeth Barbara Cauble and this marriage occurred before 1792. Their first borne was Margaret, borne 30 Jul. 1792; Baptized 11 Nov. 1792, a daughter of Geo. Earnhart with John Kalb sponsor.

Three George Earnhart’s and no Wives names makes it very difficult to tie the 3 George's to their respective families.

Two Land Deeds and a Revolutionary War pension shows me that George Earnhart married Margaret Keppel and moved their families with others to Bedford County, Tennessee about 1812.

In the below land deed, Peter Keppel, Sr., has passed away and his heirs-at-law are selling their individual share to their Brother, John Kapple.

                                                  Witnefs R. Brandon, C. C.

George Earnhart and Margaret Keppel had a son named Daniel Earnhart. In George Arnhart to Daniel Arnhart_Deed_FF_49 & 50, George makes the following statement “George Arnhart of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee of the one part and Daniel Arnhart his son of the county and State”

There is an Earnhart Family Bible that shows the Earnhart Family with 5 children. These same children have their birth and baptism recorded in the Organ Lutheran Church Records, 1774-1882.

Margaret Keppel Earnhart died after 1840 and George Earnhart died March 1850 of old age.

Caution: I know the George Earnhart married (I George Earenhart in wright of My Wife Margaret (Keppel). Since there are 3 George Earnhart it's possible that the son of Phillip Earnhart and Elizabeth, his wife is not the husband of Margaret Keppel. However, the other two are father-son and they are not Margaret's husband.

George and Margaret Earnhart are my 4th Great Grand Aunt and Uncle.

To All My Readers:

I'm sorry; but, the wife has been and still is in the hospital and I just didn't have time for a Blog Post. Please keep her (Melba) in your thoughts and prayers.
