It’s Family Time~The Elizabeth Catherine Dry Families

Elizabeth Catherine Dry was borne abt 1829, a daughter of Peter Dry and Hetty Elizabeth A. Teter of Cabarrus County, North Carolina. She was the last borne of five children born to this couple. She had one brother and three sisters.

At age 22, Elizabeth Catherine Dry married Martin Kees on 24 May 1851 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. On August 20, 1862 at the age of 30 years, Martin Kees enlisted with Co G, 7th NC Infantry. Earlier in the year on 4 April 1862, Elizabeth had given birth to their 2nd Child, a boy they named Adam Kees. His baby sister, Eve was just a mere 2 1/2 years old.

Martin Kees did not survive the War. He was admitted to the hospital on 13 October 1862 where he died of disease in December 1862. <https://www.fold3.com/image/32717129>

On 2 April 1879, Elizabeth Catherine Dry Kees married Levi Hinseman.

No known children were borne to this couple. Levi Hinseman died before 14 January 1891 per his probate file. No exact death date has been found for Levi Hinseman. The date above is based on a list of personal property laid off as part of a year supply for the Widow.

         We the undersigned commissioners with J. F. Welleford a Justice of the peace for Cabarrus County after being duly sworn met on the premises of the late Levi Hinseman on the 14th day of Jany 1891 for the purpose of laying off a years support for his Widow Mrs. E. C. Hinseman and find the family to consist of the Widow--- and proceeded to allot the following articles of personal property with the value annexed.   

There is no doubt that Mrs. Elizabeth Catherine (E. C.) Hinseman was alive and well on 14 January 1891 when these supplies were laid off for her support. But, nine years later in 1900 no trace of Elizabeth Catherine has been found. Her absence from the 1900 Census may mean that she passed away sometime between January 1891 and June 1900.

Her son, Adam N. Kees and his new wife, Adelaide Loretta are enumerated in 1900 Census. If Elizabeth Catherine, his mother, was in fact alive its most likely she would be found with her son and daughter-in-law.

Military Tuesday~Pvt. John Henry Perkins III

John Henry Perkins III was born 8 October 1878, a son of John Henry Perkins, Jr. and Margaret E. Griggs. John Henry was the oldest of 4 children borne to this couple.

John Henry Perkins III enlisted and served as a Private with Company "L", 2 SC Infantry, Spanish American War.

The Spanish-America War was a short-lived conflict between the United States and Spain. Due to unrest in Cuba, President McKinney sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to protect American citizens. He delayed notifying Spain and that upset the Spanish Government.

On the night of February 15, 1898 there was an explosion on-board the U.S.S. Maine and it sank in Havana Harbor killing 266 soldiers. This led to hostiles between Spain and the United States called the Spanish-American War.

By 2 June 1900 when the census was enumerated, John Henry Perkins III had served in the Spanish American War, received his discharge and married Jerusha Ann Sellers, daughter of Samuel Joseph Sellers, Sr. and his wife Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Hurst, The 1900 census showed John and Jerusha married in 1900 with no children. 

John Henry Perkins and Jerusha Ann Sellers had the following children:

i.    Joyce Myrtle Perkins, born 15 Sep 1905, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Clester Merritt Cobb; died 24 Dec 1986, Cobb County, Georgia.
ii.    Maggie Perkins was born about 1908 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii.    Charles Henry Perkins was born on 22 Oct 1913 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 22 Sep 1992 at the age of 78 in Fulton County, Georgia.
iv.    John Robert Perkins was born on 11 Dec 1918 in Buckhead, Fulton, Georgia. He died on 11 Nov 1999 at the age of 80.

John Henry Perkins, III died 24 October 1949 in Cobb County, Georgia. His wife, Jerusha Ann Sellers Perkins died 25 November 1943 in Cobb County, Georgia. They share a double tombstone in the Mount Bethel Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia.
