Sunday’s Obituary~Mary Eliza Davis Rivers


Mary Eliza Davis is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

She was the youngest daughter of Michael Davis and Hulda Rivers; born November 23, 1853 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

At age 17, about 1870, she married Dock Wesley Rivers. Together they raised twelve children, 4 daughters and 8 sons.  

On 15 April 1917, at age 63,  Mary Eliza died suddenly leaving her husband and 12 children to mourn.

       Chesterfield, April 20.-- Mrs. D. W. Rivers, of the Zoar section of this county died on Sunday night. Mrs. Rivers was apparently in good health and died very suddenly at 10 o'clock on Sunday night. On Monday afternoon the body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Zoar church. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J. L. Tyler. Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of the late Michael Davis, and while quite young, was married to Dock W. Rivers.
      Besides her husband and one sister, Mrs. James Ross of Chesterfield,  Mrs. Rivers is survived by 12 children, all of whom live in this county and are among the best citizens of the State.
