Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #297–Rosa Ann Thurman Gainey
This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Rosa Ann Thurman Gainey died on 2 October 1883 leaving her 3 children and grandchildren; children of her daughter Susannah “Susie” Gainey deceased wife of Capt. William B. Davis.
Rosa Ann’s husband James P. Gainey had died about September 1850 in Barbour County, Alabama. After the death of her husband, though pregnant with another child, Rosa Ann came back home to Chesterfield County, South Carolina where her daughter, Susannah was born on 10 May 1851.
Phillip James Hurst was named Executor of the Estate. He was the husband of Rosa Ann daughter Mary Ann Gainey.

In the matter } Petition for
of} letters
The estate of Rosana} of
Gainey deseased} Administration
The petition of Phillip J. Hurst respectfully shows to this court;
1. That Rosana Gainey a resident of the county and State aforesaid departed this life on or about the second day of October A.D. 1883, leaving a small personal and some real estate and letters of administration upon said personally is necessary in order that said estate may be settled.
2. That the intestate left as her heirs children and grandchildren to wit: Mary A. Hurst. A daughter of (inserted), the wife of your petitioner, Lewis J. Gainey, a son of residing somewhere in the state of Texas, Jane Hancock, a daughter, wife of R. F. M. Hancock and James Davis, William Davis, Minnie Davis and Lillian Davis who are grand children of the intestate and children of a daughter of intestate called Susanna the said Susanna having intermarried with William B. Davis, Junior and pre-deceased her mother several years.
Wherefore your petitioner prays that letters of administration upon said estate be granted him.

Rosa Ann Thurman and James P. Gainey had the following children:
i. Mary Ann Gainey, born 20 Jul 1843, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Phillip James Hurst, 1864; died 19 Mar 1908, Kingsland, Cleveland, Arkansas.
ii. Lewis J. Gainey, born 23 December 1846, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Nancy Jane Hurst; died 6 Nov. 1941, Chambersville, Collin, Texas..
iii. Nancy Jane Gainey, born 11 Apr 1849, Barbour County, Alabama; married Robert Fell Moore Hancock; died 3 Dec 1891, Ruby, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
iv. Susannah Ann "Susie" Gainey, born 10 May 1851, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married William Benjamin Davis, 31 Dec 1866, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 30 Jan 1874, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
