Today’s subject is The Last Will and Testament of Elijah Hunnicutt.

Elijah Hunnicutt was borne abt 1776, a son of Hartwell Hunnicutt and his wife Mary Steward. I have found no evidence that Elijah , also known as Eli, was ever married. I think that his Will and the execution of Land Deeds of his Property to his father and brothers clearly suggests that he was a “single” man. 

On 3 June 1817, Elijah “Eli” Hunnicutt executed his Last Will and Testament leaving to his Brother William Hunnicutt all my Personal and real estate to him and his heirs forever. William Hunnicutt was also named the  Executor of his Will. His Brother, Caufield Hunnicutt and Abram Williams provided securities in the sum of five hundred dollars.

In the name of God amen. I, Elijah Hunnicutt of Surry County being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound memory blefsed be almighty God for the same do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say) I give to my Brother Wm. Hunnicutt all my Personal (pg 311) and real estate to him and his heirs forever.I hereby appoint my brother Wm. Hunnicutt executor of this my last Will and Testament; hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and seventeen.

          The within written last Will and testament of Elijah Hunnicutt deceased was presented into Court by William Hunnicutt the executor therein named the same being proved by the oaths of William H. Ripley and William E. Wright two of the subscribing witnefses thereto is by the Court ordered to be recorded. And on motion of the said executor who made oath and gave bond with Abram Williams and Caufield Hunnicutt his securities in the sum of five hundred dollars, conditioned as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.                                                                                                              Teste,

I have found no obituary, tombstone, death notice are death date for the death of Elijah Hunnicutt. But, if you look at the last paragraph after his will above it inferred he died before 24 August 1818...

It’s Family Time~The Daniel Dry Family

Daniel Dry was born 21 July 1795 a son of Owen Ulrich Dry and his wife Eve Dry. He was the last born of 4 children to this union. He had one brother and two sisters. At age 19, Daniel married a young lady by the name of Barbara Lipe, also age 19.

Barbara Lipe was born 16 November 1795, a daughter of  Leonard Lipe and Barbara (Wentz) Lipe. There are reports that Daniel and Barbara were married on 21 March 1815 in Montgomery county; but I have not found any substantiating document to support this date.

In 1817, Daniel and Barbara packed their belonging in a One-horse cart and migrated to Perry County, Illinois. If you look at the children listed belong you will see that they had one son and Barbara was  most likely with child when they left Cabarrus County for Illinois.

Sadly,  Daniel’s life was cut short and he died on 9 March 1836 at the age of 40. I was unable to find any information on his demise. His death left his wife Barbara with 7 children ranging in age from 3 year old to 19 years.  

After the death of Daniel, Barbara (Lipe) Dry married David H. Mead on 19 January 1941.  I don’t know who David Mead was but I haven’t been able to find out anything about him other than the marriage that took place in January 1841.

Daniel Dry and Barbara Lipe had the following children:

i. Wilson Dry was born in 1815 in Perry County Illinois. He died in 1817 at the age of 2.

ii. Catherine Dry, born 5 Nov 1817, Perry County Illinois; married Hiram Pyle, 18 Apr 1833; died 10 Jan 1879, Illinois.

iii. Owen Monroe Dry was born on 16 Mar 1820 in Perry County Illinois. He died about 1838 at the age of 18 in Duquoin, Perry, Illinois.

iv. Lawrence Dry was born on 4 Apr 1822 in Perry County Illinois. He died on 4 May 1907 at the age of 85 in Worth County, Missouri.

v. Lydia Dry, born 8 Sep 1824, Perry County, Illinois; married William Riley Browning, 5 Oct 1837; married Belus Franklin Harrison, 23 Sep 1873; married Hosea Vise, 23 Jun 1888; died 28 May 1908, Franklin County, Illinois.

vi. Daniel Washington Dry, born 22 Feb 1827, Perry County Illinois; married Martha Wells, 19 Apr 1848; died 9 Mar 1891.

vii. Jacob Dry was born on 27 Aug 1830 in Perry County Illinois. He died on 8 Mar 1832 at the age of 1 in Perry County Illinois.

viii. Aaron Dry was born on 1 Sep 1833 in Perry County Illinois. He died on 25 Nov 1865 at the age of 32

David H. Mead and Barbara (Lipe) Dry had no known children.

Benjamin Earnhart’s Will
I, Benjamin Earnhart of the County of Bedford State of Tennessee do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made—
1.   And first- I direct that my body be decently interred in the grave yard art Daniel Earnhart’s in this County in a manner suitable to my condition in life--.  
2.   And as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to entrust me with I depose of the same as follows (viz) I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as possible out of any moneys that I may die possessed of or may first come into the hands of my executor, from any portion of my estate.—
Item (3) I direct that Thirty acres or more be sold off of the Northern Boundary of my land including the house now occupied by Powell Sweney. And I give my Aden [administrator], the former to sell this land publicly or privately in one or two year, credit.
Item (4)- I direct that my Ex {Executor] or Aden [Administrator] sell to the highest bidder on a credit of twelve months.
Item (5) I leave to my wife my perishable property [illegible????] – my household and kitchen furniture and direct that all property not set aside or excepted bylaw for her use be sold as stated.
Item (6) It is my will and desire that Susan my wife have my Sorrell and Horses and the proceeds arising there from during her natural life and it is my desire that my daughter Amy Leggett return with her Husband J. C. Leggett and live with Susan my wife –
Item (7) At the death of my wife Susan it my will that the farm household and kitchen furniture all and every things appertaining, thereunto be sold and equally divided between my children (viz) G. W. Earnhart, Wm. A. Earnhart, Doc Earnhart, Amy Earnhart Liggett and in case of dec death of any of these, then, their children are to inherit their parents part of said Estate – Betty Swiney is to receive five dollars of my estate her bodily heirs are to receive one fifth of my Estate at their majority. The County Court appointing a guardian for them,and I hereby nominate and appoint my friend Herman Harris my Executor with my Will attached.

The Last Will and Testament contained the following genealogical information:

Wife - Susan [Maiden Name Unknown] {NOTE: not Stated is the fact that Susan is his 2nd wife. His first Wife was Harriett [MNU]

Son – G. W. Earnhart [George]

Son -- Wm. A. Earnhart

Son – Doc Earnhart  [Green L. “Doc”]

Daughter – Amy Earnhart Liggett and her husband John Henry Newton Liggett

Betty  Swiney – Relationship not stated.  Thus far I have not located Betty Swiney also mentioned in the Will is Powell Sweney. Are these two related? As of yet I don't have a clue! 

The three sons named above are sons of Benjamin’s 1st wife Harriet along with John Mary and James who are not mentioned in the Will.

Daughter Amy and (Martha not mentioned) are the daughters of Susan, 2nd wife of Benjamin Earnhart. 

Benjamin Earnhart and Harriett had the following children:

i. John Earnhart was born about 1832.

ii. George W. Earnhart was born about 1833.

iii. Mary Earnhart was born about 1835.

iv. William A. Earnhart, born abt 1837; married May .

v. James Earnhart was born about 1848 in Bedford County, Tennessee. 

vi. Green L. "Doctor" Earnhart was born about 1853 in Bedford County, Tennessee. 

Benjamin Earnhart and Susan were married. Susan was born about 1824 in Tennessee.

Benjamin Earnhart and Susan had the following children:

 i. Amy Earnhart, born 19 Aug 1860, Bedford County, Tennessee; married John Henry Newton Liggett, 29 Aug 1878, Bedford County, Tennessee; died 8 Dec 1897, Hanford, Kings, California.

ii. Martha Earnhart was born about 1865 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

It is not known when either wife passed away nor have Marriage dates been found for the two wives. Harriett, we know died between 1860 and 1870 and Benjamin married Susan between these dates.

An actual death date has not been found for Benjamin Earnhart; but, we know he died between 2 October 1882 (Execution of his Last WILL) and before 6 November 1882 (date of Bond naming Herman Harris the Administrator of the Estate of Benjamin Earnhart, deceased.)

Benjamin Earnhart is my 1st Cousin 5X Removed.

The George Earnhart Family

Sometime before or about 1803, Margaret Keppel married George Earnhardt/Earnhart in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. This marriage date is estimated based on the birth of Sara Evelina Earnhart on 14 July 1803; their known first borne child.

Margaret Keppel was born abut 1759 a daughter of Peter Keppel, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Grobb. She was also a younger sister to Catherine Kepple Dry, my 4th Great Grandmother. 

George Earnhart was borne 9 June 1759, a son of Phillip Earnhart; mother unknown.

George and Margaret had 4 children borne in Rowan County, three of which were baptized there at the Organ Lutheran Church between 1803 and 1809. It is unclear where their son James was borne in 1812.  By 1812, the family had relocated to Bedford County, Tennessee. 

In an affidavit, dated 26 April 1836,  for a Revolution War Pension, George Earnhart states that he remained [in NC] after the Revolution until about 24 years ago [1812]. I removed into Bedford County State of Tennessee near Shelbyville where I lived about seven years [till 1819] and then removed into this County where I have lived ever since and where I now live [Madison County, Tenn.].

George Earnhart on oath stated that he served two – 3 Month tours of duty but was unable to prove it to the satisfaction of the US Government and was denied the pension he had earned and deserved.

I found the birth of five children listed in a Family Bible and in the Organ Lutheran Church minutes; but, Census records show that George had about nine children. Thus its clear that all the children of George and Margaret HAVE NOT been identified.

At the death of Margaret's father, Peter Keppel, Sr. around October 1806 his estate was divided among the children. Margaret and her husband George Earnhart along with her other siblings are named within this Land Deed (DB 6, Pg 168).

By 1812, the Earnharts were in Bedford County, Tennessee. On 23 March 1815, George Earnhart purchased from Oliver B. Hays a 1000 acre tract of land along the Duck Rivers, about two miles south of the Mouth Falling Creek for twelve hundred dollars.

By 1819, George and Margaret were in Madison County which was short lived and back in Bedford in 1820.  

1820 CENSUS:

The 1820 Household of George and Margaret shows the two to be 45+ years of age (born bef 1775)  with the following children:

2 Males under 10;

2 Males age 10-15;

1 Male age 16-25;

2 Female ages 10-15

3 Female 16-25

1830 CENSUS

The 1830 Household of George and Margaret Earnhart has them and the following children:

1 male age 60-69 >> George Earnhart 

1 female age 50-59 >> Margaret (Keppel) Earnhart 

2 males age 15-19;

1 male age 20-29;

1 Female age 10-14;

3 Female 20-19;

1840 CENSUS:

The 1840 Census shows George and hi wife, whom I perceived to be Margaret Keppel Earnhart.

It’s obvious that there are unidentified children belonging to this Couple.

Margaret (Keppel) Earnhart is believed to have died sometime between 1840 and 1850. No record of her death has been found; no tombstone, nor an obituary.  

The children of George and Margaret Keppel Earnhart that have been identified are:

i. Sara Evelina Earnhart was born on 14 Jul 1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

ii. Benjamin Earnhart, born 22 Jun 1805, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Harriett ; died bef 6 Nov 1882.

iii. Nancy Earnhart was born on 3 May 1807 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

iv. Daniel Earnhart, born 13 Feb 1809, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Martha; married Ann; died bef 2 Apr 1883.

v. James Earnhart was born on 10 Mar 1812 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

George Earnhart died March 1850, Bedford County, TN. from “OLD AGE”. In this Mortality Census he was listed as age 83. But his Revolutionary War Service Record show's he was born 9 June 1759 making him 90 years of age.

Margaret Keppel/Kepple/Kepley Earnhart/Earnhardt wife of George Earnhart/Earnhardt  is my 4th Great Grand Aunt.

The Death of Mary E. (Kepley) Copple

 Mary E. Kepley was born 2 May 1836, a daughter of Daniel Kepley and an unknown spouse. Her mother died after the birth of two children and her father, Daniel Kepley, married Mary E. Shuler on 2 September 1845 in  Davidson County, North Carolina.

On 9 July 1865, Mary E. Kepley and Alfred Kinny Copple were married in Davidson County, North Carolina. After the birth of six children Alfred and Mary moved to Downs, Osborne County, Kansas.  There their last child, a daughter, was born in February 1884. This couple lost 4 of their children as infants or at a very young age and their oldest daughter at age 21.  

Mary Kepley Copple died at age 66 years, 2 months, and 11 days on 13 July 1902 in Downs, Kansas. 

Obituary.
Mary Kepley was born in Davidson Co., N. C, May 2nd, 1836, and died at her home July 13, 1902, age 66 years, 2 months and 11 days. She was married to A. K. Copple, July 9th, 1865, to this union were born seven children, three boys and four girls. The husband and two daughters survive her. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 30 and united with the Liberty Baptist Church, North Carolina. She with her husband and family came to Kansas in March 1883 and settled in Osborne county where they have since made their home. She united with the Downs Baptist church Nov. 1889 and retained her membership until her death. Mrs. Copple has been failing in health for several years and for the past two years has been entirely helpless, though amid her afflictions she was not known to murmur or complain and as the end drew near she expressed her firm faith in Christ and said to those around her that she was willing and ready to depart this life and to be with her Savior. It’s Family Time~The Wilson Henry Family

 Wilson Henry was born about 1815 in Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina. He was a son of Isham Henry and his wife Lucretia.

Wilson Henry married Malinda Ann Deese about 1846. Marriage year 1846 based on birth of first born child - Rachel Ann Henry, 26 August 1847.

Malinda Ann Deese was borne in Jan 1825 in Anson County, North Carolina, a daughter of James Deese and his wife Alice Bethea. 

To this union were borne six children:

i. Rachel Ann Henry was born on 26 Aug 1847 in Anson, North Carolina. Died, Unknown at this time.

ii. John T. Henry was born on 26 Jan 1850 in Anson, North Carolina; married Idella Jane Jerome in 1873.  He died on 9 Mar 1929 at the age of 79 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina

iii. William Frank Henry, born Aug 1854, Anson, North Carolina.

iv. Sarah Henry was born about 1855 in Anson, North Carolina; Died, Unknown at this time.

v. Thomas Furman Henry was born on 14 Sep 1857 in Anson County, North Carolina. Married Jessie Anna Cope. He died on 8 Feb 1931 at the age of 73 in Jerusalem, Davie, North Carolina.

vi. Mary Alice Henry, born 3 Mar 1869, Anson, North Carolina; married Charles Mackley Kelly, 12 Jun 1887, Anson County, North Carolina; died 13 Sep 1947, Lynchburg, Virginia.

In his younger years, Wilson worked as a carpenter; but, from 1860 till his death he was lifelong farmer in the Lilesville Community of Anson County.

Wilson Henry died 27 May 1899.  His wife Malinda Ann (Deese) Henry passed away on 13 May 1906 in Rowan County at the home of her son, Thomas Furman Henry. She was buried in the Family Burying Ground in Lilesville.

In Memoriam~Mrs. Susan B. Liles

Susan Brownfield Davis was born abt 1808, a daughter of Lt. Joseph B. Davis and his wife Anne Keene. She was the last borne of eleven children having 5 sisters and 5 brother as siblings. Her father served in the Revolutionary War as a Private and Lieutenant of Cavalry from 1780 to 1783. His children received a pension for his service in the conflict.

Sometime before 1839, Susan Brownfield Davis married James D. Liles of Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina.  James D. Liles was borne abt 1810, a son of Eli Liles and Betty Crocker.  I have seen on line that they were married on 2 June 1836 but this date though precise was not sourced and most likely made up.

Susan B. Liles and James D. Liles had two known children:

i. Mary Thomas Liles, born abt 1839, Anson County, North Carolina; married Maj. Hugh Giles Fladger; died 22 Jan 1908, Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina.

ii. Joseph Liles, born abt 1841, Anson County, North Carolina; died 8 Feb. 1862 in the Battle of Roanoke Island.

Susan Brownfield (Davis) Liles died on 1 November 1882 leaving her husband, James D. Liles surviving. Her son, Joseph Liles, born 1841 was killed on 8 February 1862 at the Battle of Roanoke Island (7-8 February 1862).  

IN MEMORIAM. "Mrs. Susan B. Liles was about 80 years old and died Nov. the 1st, 1882. She was the mother-in-law of Hugh Fladger, who died about two months before. Thus the family is doubly bereaved. Sister Liles had been afflicted for several years. When her son-in-law, to whom she was devoted, died, the stroke was so sudden that she gradually declined from day to day till death set the prisoner free. She was a true, good Christian woman. All loved her. During her sickness at times she was not as well satisfied as she desired. Her mind partook of the feeble condition of her body. In her last moments she was fully comforted, and with her last breath, said "she would soon be at home." God bless the bereaved family, and bring them all to the kingdom of heaven. O. J. B.

The William R. Sellers Family

William R. Sellers was born on 26 May 1824 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was the son of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood and was the twelfth of fourteen children born to John and Henrietta Sellers. Between 1826 and 1827, John and Henrietta moved their family to Carroll County, Tennessee.

On 16 Jun 1858 when William R. was 34, he first married Priscilla SCOTT, daughter of John L SCOTT Junior (1797-) & Rebecca BRANDON (1804-), in Carroll County, Tennessee. Priscilla was born on 14 Jul 1826 in Carroll County, Tennessee. At the age of 51, Priscilla died in Carroll County, Tennessee on 12 Apr 1878. Buried in 1878 in Sellers Hill Cemetery, Clarksburg, Carroll County, Tennessee.

To this union was borne one child:

i. Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" Sellers, born May 1864, Carroll County, Tennessee; married Thomas Hampton; died 1 Aug 1935, Carroll County, Tennessee.

After the death of his wife Priscilla in 1878, William R. Sellers remarried in 1882. William R. second married Caladonia SCOTT, daughter of Chronicle F. SCOTT (1801- 1880) & Jane BRANDON (1811-). Born on 26 Jan 1850. At the age of 73, Caladonia died on 27 Jan 1923. Buried in Jan 1923 in Sellers Hill Cemetery, Clarksburg, Carroll County, Tennessee. No known children were borne of this union. 

William R. Sellers died in Carroll County, Tennessee on 28 Sep 1898 at the age of 74. He was buried in 1898 in Sellers Hill Cemetery, Clarksburg, Carroll County, Tennessee with his 1st wife.

William R. Sellers is my 1st Cousin 5X Removed.
