52 Cousins~Jacob Matthew Hagler

Jacob Matthew Hagler, son of Israel Franklin Hagler & Eliza Jane Page was borne 26 Aug 1886. He was the sixth of ten children born to this couple. Jacob Matthew had 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Jacob, like his father, was a farmer or farm laborer. 

At age 23, Jacob Matthew Hagler married Cassandra Priscilla “Cassie” Pinyan on 20 December 1909.

Married:

P. S. Hagler and Miss Cassie Pinyan, of Charlotte, were married Monday [20 Dec. 1909] evening by Magistrate J. W. McElhaney.

Sadly this was to be a very short marriage for this couple. Jacob Matthew Hagler passed away on 28 May 1914 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina of Pellagra. Pellagra is a disease that occurs as a result of niacin (vitamin B-3) deficiency. He and Cassie had been married a short 5 1/2 years. 

To this union there were borne two children. 

  1. Lawrence Jacob Hagler, b. 23 Dec 1910
  2. Gilbert Mitchell Hagler, b. 15 Oct. 1912

After the death of Jacob Matthew Hagler, Cassie Hagler the widow, married John Franklin Barnhardt on 5 Sep 1915 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. John Franklin was a Weaver in the Brown Cotton Mill. He retired from Brown Mill. 


John Franklin Barnhardt and his wife, Cassie Hagler, had three children: 2 sons and a daughter.

  2. James Monroe Barnhardt, b. 28 May 1920
  3. Mrs. Frances (Barnhardt) Horton, b. 13 Oct 1927


When interviewed two years before her death, Mrs. Cassie Barnhardt said she had five children who in turn gave her 17 grandchildren and a total of 28 great-grandchildren.  

Jacob Matthew Hagler died 28 May 1914 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

John Franklin Barnhardt died 12 December 1967 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Cassie Pinyan (Hagler) Barnhardt died 9 October 1978 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

52 Cousins~Abner William Eddins

Abner William Eddins was borne 19 February 1826, a son of William Riley Eddins and Nancy Manning. William Riley Eddins was borne in Chesterfield County, South Carolina a son of William Eddins and his wife Nancy who maiden name is unknown. 

In 1812, William Riley Eddins served in the War of 1812 and then left home migrating to Conecuh & Wilcox Counties, Alabama.  There he met and married Nancy Manning about the year 1825. An exact marriage date has not been found but their first-born Abner William Eddins was borne 19 February 1826.

William Riley and Nancy Manning had four children before her untimely death in March of 1840. 

At age 18, Abner William Eddins, their first born, married Christiana A. Jolliff, daughter of Davis and Elizabeth Jolliff. We don’t have an exact date for this marriage, but we know that Abner and Christianna are married and living with his parents, in the 1850 Census for Wilcox County, Alabama. We also know that Christiana A. Jolliff father had passed away in early 1843. 

Both Abner and his father, William, were farmers according to numerated Censuses. 

After the birth of five children, 3 daughters and 2 sons, Abner William Eddins died on 30 May 1865. This date came from a “Alabama, U.S., Surname Files Expanded, 1702–1981 for Abner W Eddins" and may be suspect since it is not an official certified document. 

The Children of Abner William Eddins and Christiana A. Jolliff are:

i. John Davis Eddins, born 21 Mar 1851, Alabama; married Mary Susan Williams, 25 Dec 1872, Dallas, Alabama; died 9 Dec 1937, Wilcox County, Alabama.

ii. Nancy Elizabeth Eddins, born 2 Nov 1853, Alabama; married J. E. Sessions, 3 Feb 1884, Wilcox County. Alabama; died 20 Jul 1945, Wilcox County, Alabama.

iii. Laura Christina "Anna" Eddins, born 22 Jun 1856, Alabama; married Wiley Timothy Stein, 27 Dec 1877, Wilcox County. Alabama; died 10 Dec 1937, Pine Apple, Wilcox, Alabama.

        iv. Eliza Alice Eddins was born on 24 Feb 1859 in Alabama. She died on 2 Oct 1921 at the age of 62 in Monroe County, Alabama.

v. William Abner Eddins was born on 27 Sep 1862 in Alabama. He died on 21 Aug 1956 at the age of 93 in St Clair County, Alabama.


We do know that Abner died and his wife, Christiana A. Jolliff, married  B. C. Hutchinson on 21 Jan 1872 in Wilcox County. Alabama.

52 Cousins~Sarah Brock

Sarah Brock is a daughter of Valentine Brock and Elizabeth Lundy. She was born 26 January 1812, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She had two brothers and two sisters; she was the middle child.   

Her parents, Valentine and Elizabeth Brock moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Henry County, Georgia sometime between 1820 and 1830. Based on the birth of children the most logical date for their move to Georgia was between Jan 1812 and Nov 1813. 

The 1830 & 1831 Tax List for Henry County GA, shows that Elizabeth's Husband died sometime before 1830. The exact date is currently unknown. 

On 13 December 1836, at age 24, Sarah Brock married Tillman Taylor, age 22, in Troup County, Georgia

Tillman was a farmer and Sarah was a stay-at-home Mom. They raised a large family of eight children: 3 sons and 5 daughters. Tillman managed a good size farm containing 248 acres of land.

From the newspaper, "The Randolph Leader", December 30, 1896   LANDS FOR SALE One of the best farms in the county, containing about 248 acres, three miles north of Roanoke on High Pine Creek, known as the Tillman Taylor place, will be sold for division on the premises on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1896. Terms made known on day of sale. M.P. Pittman.

Tillman Taylor and Sarah Brock had the following children:

i. William Valentine Taylor, born 18 Sep 1837, Troup or Jasper County, Georgia; married Sarah C.; died 2 Oct 1907, Randolph County, Alabama.

ii. Sarah Elizabeth Taylor, born 30 Mar 1839, Jasper County, Georgia; married John Holder; died 22 Feb 1881, Randolph County, Alabama.

iii. Catherine Jane Taylor, born 12 Dec 1840, Randolph County, Alabama; married Jonathan Sudduth; died 1 Jul 1911, Randolph County, Alabama.

iv. James Lundy Brock Taylor, born 18 Apr 1842, Randolph County, Alabama; married Lucy G. Slay; died 10 Oct 1928, Randolph County, Alabama.

v. Eliza Ellen Taylor, born 12 May 1844, Randolph County, Alabama; married Martin Polk Pittman; died 30 Apr 1925, Randolph County, Alabama.

vi. Malachi Reeves Taylor was born about 1847 in Randolph County, Alabama. He was born on 14 Dec 1850 in Randolph County, Alabama. He died on 12 Mar 1923 at the age of 76 in Randolph, Randolph, Alabama. Malachi was also known as Martin Taylor. 

         vii.   Martha Ann Lovicy "Mattie" Taylor, born 14 Dec 1850, Randolph County, Alabama; married George Bernard Hendon, 28 Nov 1895, Heard County, Georgia; married John Holder; died 16 Jun 1921, Randolph County, Alabama.

    viii. Mary Ann Malissa "Molly" Taylor, born 14 Dec 1850, Randolph County, Alabama; married George M. Holder; died 25 Aug 1925, Amsllence, Randolph, Alabama.



Sarah (Brock) Taylor passed away on 28 December 1894. Before that, she and Tillman had lost their oldest daughter, Sarah Elizbeth Taylor, who passed away on 22 February 1881.  Tillman Taylor died on 5 April 1896.

52 Cousins~Joseph Hardy Sellers

Joseph Hardy Sellers was born 5 August 1853, a son of Hardy Huntley Sellers (1829 - 1857) and Mary E. Sinclair Sellers (1830-1912) of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He was the 2nd of 5 children borne to this couple. He had two brothers and two sisters.  

On 6 October 1878, Joseph went to his brother’s home and finding no one at home let himself into the house, found a pistol and killed himself. Family and friends said his mind had been wandering for some time. He was 25 years, 2 months and 1 day of age.   


Joe Sellers Death: 

October 9, 1878, Pee Dee Herald, Page 5, Column 2; (Anson County, NC) "Suicide" - Joe Sellers a young man living in the edge of Chesterfield, SC committed suicide, last Saturday. Mr. Sellers mind had been wondering for some time past and his friends were keeping close watch over him. It seems Mr. Sellers went over to his brothers on a visit and not finding any of the family at home raised one of the windows and went into the house. When found he was lying across a bed cold in death with his brother's pistol by his side with one bullet hole in his forehead and one in his stomach.
