52 Cousins~Sarah Brock

Sarah Brock is a daughter of Valentine Brock and Elizabeth Lundy. She was born 26 January 1812, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She had two brothers and two sisters; she was the middle child.   

Her parents, Valentine and Elizabeth Brock moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Henry County, Georgia sometime between 1820 and 1830. Based on the birth of children the most logical date for their move to Georgia was between Jan 1812 and Nov 1813. 

The 1830 & 1831 Tax List for Henry County GA, shows that Elizabeth's Husband died sometime before 1830. The exact date is currently unknown. 

On 13 December 1836, at age 24, Sarah Brock married Tillman Taylor, age 22, in Troup County, Georgia

Tillman was a farmer and Sarah was a stay-at-home Mom. They raised a large family of eight children: 3 sons and 5 daughters. Tillman managed a good size farm containing 248 acres of land.

From the newspaper, "The Randolph Leader", December 30, 1896   LANDS FOR SALE One of the best farms in the county, containing about 248 acres, three miles north of Roanoke on High Pine Creek, known as the Tillman Taylor place, will be sold for division on the premises on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1896. Terms made known on day of sale. M.P. Pittman.

Tillman Taylor and Sarah Brock had the following children:

i. William Valentine Taylor, born 18 Sep 1837, Troup or Jasper County, Georgia; married Sarah C.; died 2 Oct 1907, Randolph County, Alabama.

ii. Sarah Elizabeth Taylor, born 30 Mar 1839, Jasper County, Georgia; married John Holder; died 22 Feb 1881, Randolph County, Alabama.

iii. Catherine Jane Taylor, born 12 Dec 1840, Randolph County, Alabama; married Jonathan Sudduth; died 1 Jul 1911, Randolph County, Alabama.

iv. James Lundy Brock Taylor, born 18 Apr 1842, Randolph County, Alabama; married Lucy G. Slay; died 10 Oct 1928, Randolph County, Alabama.

v. Eliza Ellen Taylor, born 12 May 1844, Randolph County, Alabama; married Martin Polk Pittman; died 30 Apr 1925, Randolph County, Alabama.

vi. Malachi Reeves Taylor was born about 1847 in Randolph County, Alabama. He was born on 14 Dec 1850 in Randolph County, Alabama. He died on 12 Mar 1923 at the age of 76 in Randolph, Randolph, Alabama. Malachi was also known as Martin Taylor. 

         vii.   Martha Ann Lovicy "Mattie" Taylor, born 14 Dec 1850, Randolph County, Alabama; married George Bernard Hendon, 28 Nov 1895, Heard County, Georgia; married John Holder; died 16 Jun 1921, Randolph County, Alabama.

    viii. Mary Ann Malissa "Molly" Taylor, born 14 Dec 1850, Randolph County, Alabama; married George M. Holder; died 25 Aug 1925, Amsllence, Randolph, Alabama.

Sarah (Brock) Taylor passed away on 28 December 1894. Before that, she and Tillman had lost their oldest daughter, Sarah Elizbeth Taylor, who passed away on 22 February 1881.  Tillman Taylor died on 5 April 1896. 

Sarah (Brock) Taylor is my 2nd Cousin 4X Removed.

A 1801 Land Deed~Benj. Brock to Wm. Brooks & Richard Knight

I have added this Land deed to my collection of Brock deeds for various reasons. First after many years of research I have come to the conclusion that ALL Brocks in Chesterfield County, SC and Anson County, NC are descendants of Valentine Brock and his 2nd wife, Susanna Blaester. Thus this Benjamin Brock is one of my early Brock ancestors.

But who is this Benjamin Brock?. All of my Brock ancestors with this one exception lived in Chesterfield County, SC just across the NC/SC state line between Anson and Chesterfield County. We know from an earlier Anson County Land Deed that this Benjamin Brock married Catherine “Caty” Wright sometime before 18 January 1894. See Anson County Land Deed Book "E", Page 229 Benjamin Brock to John Wright Jr. 

In the 1800 Census Benjamin Brock is age 26- 44 making his birth year to be between 1756-1774; Valentine Brock married Susanna Blaester on 11 November 1760 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It almost certain that this Benjamin Brock is a son of Valentine and Susanna Brock.

I can find no record of any children from this union. Nor can I find Benjamin or Catherine after 12 December 1827.

In this particular Land Deed Benjamin is selling off 300 acres of land adjoining other Land that he owns to William Brook and Richard Knight.

James L. Brock, the husband of Elizabeth Purvis, passed away sometime before 17 June 1871. He was alive and well when the 1870 Census for Pike County, Mississippi was enumerated on 6 August 1870.

Miller, her husband, Isham Hinson and Thomas Hinson, defendants in the above entitled cause, are non-resident of the State of Mississippi, and reside beyond the limits thereof, respectively as follows: said Eli Brock, Nancy Miller, T. G. Miller, Angeline Miller  and R. L. Miller, in Washington parish, State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Palestine, in said parish and State; and said Isham Hinson in the parish of Livingston, in the State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Amite City, in the parish of Tangipahoa, in the said State of Louisiana; and said Thomas Hinson in the county of Lafayette, in the State of Arkansas and who post office is at Bright Star, in the county of Hopkins, in the State of Texas; it is therefore ordered that said defendants enter their appearance herein on or before

A Puzzling Guardianship Case

On 21 July 1836, Valentine Brock, son of Valentine Brock and Elizabeth Lundy, married Nancy W. Vandigriff. Nancy was the daughter of John Vandigriff and Margaret Crockett.

Their first child a daughter, Margaret P. Brock was born on 2 April 1838. They had another daughter born about 1846 whom they named Mary Ann.

On 6 July 1840 the Court of Ordinary for Henry County, Georgia appointed Thomas D. Johnson Guardian of the person + property of Margaret P. Brock A Minor.

On that date (6 July 1840) Margaret P. Brock is a baby just reaching the age of 2 years 3 months 4 days. Her Father Valentine Brock and Mother Nancy W. Vandigriff  Brock are both living.
Why does Margaret P. Brock need a Guardian?

THIS INDENTURE made the 24^th day of October in the year of our Lord 1809. Between Valentine Brock of Anson County and the State of North Carolina of the one part and Jane McKay of the County and State aforesd. Of the other part WITNESSTH that for and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred dollars paid the Rec’t whereof is hereby acknowledged hath Given Granted Bargained sold conveyed and confirmed and by these presents doth Give Grant Bargain sell convey and confirm unto her the said Jane McKay and her present heirs and assigns forever all that piece or parcel of land Lying and being in the County and State aforesd. And bounded as follows(Viz.) Beginning in the line of John Akins Sen. on the south side of old Mill Creek and Runing with the said line So. 28 Wt. to a black oak sd. Sometime finding these small snippets of known ancestors can be very frustrating. There is no doubt that this Valentine Brock is my ancestor. The problem becomes - Where does he belong or place in the Brock lineage.

This Land Deed and 3 other small snippets clearly places a Valentine Brock in both Anson County, NC and Chesterfield County, SC in the early 1800’s.

This is either Valentine Jr., b. abt 1756 Son of Valentine Brock, Sr. also known as Valentine the Immigrant. This Valentine Brock can be found in the 1800-1810 and 1820 Census for Chesterfield County, SC.

Then there’s Valentine b. bef 1775 who is the son of the above Valentine Brock, Jr. This Valentine (III) married Elizabeth Lundy about 1807 and moved to Henry County, Georgia.

William Franklin Brock is the son of Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn. William Franklin, born 22 October 1847, was their first born child; he had 9 siblings, 4 sisters and 5 brothers. 

William Franklin was twice married. He and his first wife, Sarah Brumfield, had three daughters. Sarah died sometime after the birth of her 3rd child on 5 March 1870. William then married Synthia E. Alford on 11 December 1871. 

William Franklin Brock died on 21 August 1910 and was buried in the Family cemetery (William F. Brock Cemetery).

Treasure Chest Thursday~Valentine Brock and Nancy Vandigrift

Finding ancestors that migrated away from the home county or home state is always a challenge and very rewarding when found. I can remember it like yesterday when I found the family of Valentine Brock and his wife Elizabeth Lundy living in Henry County, Georgia. 

Valentine b. bef 1775 in the Cheraw District and his wife Elizabeth Lundy, b. 3 Feb. 1780 were married in 1807 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

Valentine and Elizabeth had 5 children:

• James Lundy Brock, b. 8 Sept 1808
• Mary Ann Brock, b.20 Feb. 1810
• Sarah Elizabeth Brock, b. 26 Jan. 1812
• Eliza P. Brock, b. 16 Nov. 1813
• Valentine Brock, b. 2 Feb 1815

All the children were born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

On 21 July 1836, the youngest son, Valentine married Nancy W. Vandigrift daughter of John Vandigrift and Margaret Crockett. Young Valentine’s father had passed away sometime before 1830. The marriage was recorded in Henry County Marriages Book 1822-1933 and General indexes to marriages 1821-1939, page 171.

It’s Family Time~Samuel Rufus Brock

In our family the Purvis surname is my Paternal line and the Brock surname is my Maternal line. My grandmother on Mama’s side of the family was Mary Catherine “Mamie’ Brock Johns.

The Brock line goes back to an immigrant named Johan Valentine Brach/Brack/Brock that immigrated from Oberhochstadt, Germany to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1751. ¹


Vallentin [sic] BROCK arrived in Philadelphia onboard the ship Queen of Denmark, George Parish commander, from Rotterdam via Cowes, England, and took the oaths with the other 98 adult [age 16 and older]male passengers at the  [old] courthouse on Friday 4 Oct 1751. 

Vallentine first wife died and he married Susanna Blaester on 11 November 1760. ²



By 1790, Valentine has migrated with his family to Richmond County, North Carolina. ³









All the Brock in Chesterfield County are related. There are Brocks in Western South Carolina that have not been connected to the Chesterfield set. Brocks from the Chesterfield set migrated to Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. 

Though many Chesterfield County records were destroyed during the Civil War research suggests that Samuel Rufus Brock is my 4th cousin twice removed.

Amanuensis Monday~Will of Nancy W. Vandigriff Brock

Today’s posting is the Will of Nancy W. Vandergriff¹who married Valentine Brock on 21 July 1836 in Henry County, Georgia. 

Valentine died² on 25 April 1850. His death left Nancy with 2 young daughters to raise on her own. Having family in the area made a big difference in her life and she never re-married after the loss of her husband.

Nancy died on 25 March 1907** leaving one surviving sister³. Her oldest daughter Margaret P. Brock died in 1892. I have not found a death date for Mary Ann Brock but since she is not named in her Mother’s will it indicates that she too may have not survived.

I, Mrs. N. W. Brock being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament.
Item 1^st I give and bequeath and devise to my sister M. A. Kimbrell all my lands and house hold and kitchen furniture. To wit Forty-five (45 1/2} and 1/2 acres of land more or less known as my home place during my lifetime and Bounded on the North by lands of J.V. Goss, on the east by lands of Mrs. Dora Bostwick, on the West by lands of C.V. Williams and on the South by lands of A.D. Tingle.

Item 2^nd I have given to my nephew Jim Vandigriff to him five ($5.00) Dollars being all I expect for him to have of my estate.

Surname Saturday~Alsey Brock

The first Brock to settle in the this area of North and South Carolina was  Valentine Brock.
Valentine entered the United States, arriving in Philadelphia onboard the ship Queen of Denmark, George Parish commander, from Rotterdam via Cowes, England, and took the oaths with the other 98 adult [age 16 and older] male passengers at the  [old] courthouse on Friday 4 Oct 1751. By 1780, Valentine and his family had migrated to Richmond County, NC and can be found listed in the 1790 census for Richmond County. ^{1 2}

All the Brock in the Anson and Richmond County, NC and Chesterfield County SC are related to this early pioneer. 

Alsey Brock is a name that is only found in my direct line of Brock. Over the past 223 years there has been only two male children named Alsey in this line.

The first Alsey Brock, was born 10 Sept 1815 to Benjamin and Temperance Brock. He died 13 March 1858. This Alsey Brock was a brother to my 2nd Great Grand Father Hezekiah Brock. Alsey and Hezekiah married sisters, Lucy and Sarah Sallie Morris. ^{3 4} 

The next Alsey Brock was born on 25 Jun 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^5 6 7 8




He is a son of Hezekiah and Sarah Sallie Morris Brock.

No evidence of a marriage for Alsey has been found. He was found in all census from 1860-1910  and they all showed him as a single man. ^{9 10}  After the death of his Father, Hezekiah Brock, in a POW camp; Alsey assumed responsibility for the care of the family and his Mother Sarah Morris Brock. Sarah was still alive in 1900 and can be found in Alsey’s household.

No death date has been found for Alsey Brock but it is known that he died sometime after 27 Apr 1910. In the 1910 Census, his age is listed as 55 years. 

The first Alsey Brock is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

The second Alsey Brock is my Great Grand Uncle..

Obituary Sunday~ Dr. Jeptha S. Brock Dies

Dr. Jeptha S.Brock, son of Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn, died 7 October 1914. Jeptha was born Dec. 15, 1854 in Washington Parish, Louisiana. His grandparents, James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis migrated from Chesterfield County, South Carolina through Georgia, Alabama and on to Mississippi and Louisiana about 1820.

Dr. Jeptha married Susan Alvaline Holmes on Dec. 7, 1874 in Brockdale, Louisiana.

Dr. J. S.  Brock, of Warrenton, father of our esteemed physician, Dr. J. L. Brock died on Wednesday afternoon at five o’clock after an illness lasting thru all this year. Interment is to take place in the family burying ground this afternoon at three o’clock.[1] [The Era-Leader, October 08, 1914, Image 3, col 2]

Today’s posting is Land Deed between Farguhart McRae and Valentine Brock for 150 acres of Land. The deed is on file in Anson County, North Carolina just across the state line from Chesterfield County. The deed on file is a copy of the original deed. The original is on file in the State Archives, Raleigh, North Carolina. All deeds at the local level are copies of the original.

THIS INDENTURE made the 22nd. Day of November in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seven [1807] Between Farguhart McRae of the County of Anson and State of North Carolina of the one part & Valentine Brock the State of South Carolina and District of  Chesterfield of the other part WITNESSTH that I Farguhart McRae for & in consideration of the sum of Five hundred [$500]  Dollars in hand paid the Receipt of which I do hereby acknowledge before the Delivery of these presents have Grantee Bargained sold conveyed and do by these presents grant Bargain sell alien convey & confirm the Sd. Valentine Brock and his heirs forever a certain piece of parcel of land lying and being in Anson County as aforesd. and bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning in John Akins Senr. line on the south side of old Mill Creek on the bank of said creek and runs with sd. line So.  28 Wt. to a black oak Sd. Akins’s second corner in the in the flat ground of Sd. Creek then south 62 Et.  212 poles down the creek to a pine then No. 28 Et. with said Akins’s line to the bank of the Creek then up the said Creek with its very courses to the first station containing on hundred [100] acres of land more or less.  Also fifty [50] acres of land runs as follows Beginning on a double white oak by a spanish oak and 2 red oaks in the fork of a branch in or near the above line and run So. 35 Wt. 30 chains to two hickorys then So. 54 Wt. 10 chs. With his other line to a stake by 3 pines pointers in the Edge of a branch then So. 30 Wt. 10 chains to a stake then So. 54 Et. 20 chains to a stake then No. 35 Et. 40 chains to a stake then a direct line to the Beginning containing fifty [50] acres more or less Together with all Rights privilege and advantages thereunto belonging To Have and to hold all and singular the above granted lands and premises with every part and parcel unto the Sd. Valentine Brock his heirs and assigns to the only proper use Benefit and Behoof of him the Sd. Brock his heirs and assigns forever and the Sd. Farguhart McRae doth for his self his heirs Exrs. Admrs. or assigns covenant and agree to warrant and Defend all and singular the above lands and premises and every part and parcel thereof from and against the Lawful claim of any person or persons whatsoever. Sunday Obituary–Bro. Valentine Brock

Bro. Brock was born in Alabama about A. D. 1825, and moved with his parents to Pike County, Miss, in A. D. 1828, in which county he lived until his death. Bro. Brock was married to Miss Barthana Ginn in 1845. He united with the Silver Creek Church in August 1869. He withdrew his membership in 1873 to go into the constitution of Bogue Chitto Church, of which he remained an honored member until his death, Feb. 22, A.D. 1881. Bro. Brock was a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief, having had two sons killed; and but a little while before he was called the Lord very suddenly called his companion, which added greatly to the old man's sorrow. But the Lord did not leave him long in loneliness. Although his trials were so great and his sorrow so deep, his faith was firm and unwavering. It may truly be said of him, that he has come through great tribulation and has washed his robe and made it white in the blood of the lamb. Bro. Brock has gone where no sorrow can come; his troubles are all over; his soul at rest with that Saviour he loved.

Dearest brother, thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When the day of life is fled,
Then in heaven with joy to greet the,
Where no farewell tear is shed.

Valentine Brock  was born about 1825 in Alabama. He was the first born son and the second child of James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis. He died on 22 Feb 1881 at the age of 60 in Washington Parish, Louisiana. Valentine was buried on 24 Feb 1881 in the Brock Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.

Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn were married about 1845 in Pike County, Mississippi. Bethany Thaney Ginn, daughter of Jeptha Ginn and Penina Magee, was born in 1820 in Pike County, Mississippi. She died on 10 Oct 1880 at the age of 60 in Washington Parish, Louisiana. Bethany was buried in the Brock Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.

Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn had 10 children; 6 sons and 4 daughters.

In a quote from Bro. Valentine Brock obituary we see that Bro. Brock only serve the Lord a very short time. 
“Bro. Brock was a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief, having had two sons killed; and but a little while before he was called the Lord very suddenly called his companion”
His companion, his wife, died 10 Oct 1880. He was called to serve a short time before her death. Bro. Valentine Brock died 24 Feb 1881. That’s 4 months and 12 days after the death of his wife. 
"But the Lord did not leave him long in loneliness".
