Today’s subject is the WILL of Jacob Ganey, written in February 1845.[1]

WILL OF JACOB GANEY OF CHESTERFIELD DISTRICT 26 FEBRUARY 1845

In the name of God Amen. I Jacob Ganey of the district of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina, being weak in body but of Sound mind and disposing memory, do make and publish this my last will and Testament this 26th day of February In the year our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-five in manner and form following.
First - I desire that the present crop now on hand shall be made and Gathered after which I desire the sale of my Negro man Nelson, and the proceeds go to the payment of my debts.
Second- I Give and bequeath to my beloved son Lewis Ganey the sum of one dollar.
Third - I give and bequeath to my beloved brother John Ganey the sum of one dollar to be paid unto them respectively so soon as one year after my decease shall be Expired.
FOURTH- I give & bequeath affectionate wife Charlotte Ganey all of my Lands containing about four hundred and twenty five acres with the Exception of Forty Acres off of the South side of the Teel tract of Land including the buildings wherein James Jones now lives- for which I have given a deed to Martha Jones. Also I give and bequeath unto my affectionate wife Charlotte Ganey all the remainder of my Negroes-twelve in number namely Bob, Sucky, Wilson, Sally, Hannah, Sam, Amy, Charlotte, Eliza, Mary, Harriet and Milly. Also I give and bequeath to my aforesaid wife all of my stock of Horses, Hogs, Cattle & Sheep, Also I give and bequeath to my wife all my household goods, Bedsteads, beding, and other furniture and also all the rest and residue of my personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever of what nature, Kind and quality _____ the same may be, and not herein before given and disposed of (after payment of my debts and funeral Expenses) I do give and bequeath unto my beloved wife her Executors administrators and assigns to and for her and their own use and benefit absolutely.
And I do hereby constitute and appoint my said wife Charlotte Ganey sole Excutrix of this my last will and testament. In witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

Jacob Ganey was twice married. His first wife was Sarah “Sally” Kendricks, later changed by court order to the surname Jackson. One known child was born to these two unions, a son, called Lewis by his second wife Sally Jackson. Jacob died 4 April 1845 and you can see by the footnotes that there was a legal battle over his estate.

Today’s post is a Land Deed for 60 Acres of Land purchased by W. A. Purvis from James L. Edwards in December 1871.¹

Anson County} This indenture made this the 21st day of December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-one between James L. Edwards of the first part and W. A. Purvis of the second part, both of the county of Anson and State of North Carolina. Witnesseth: The said James L. Edwards in and for the consideration of the sum of two hundred and forty seven and 80/100 dollars ($247.80) to him in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath bargained and sold and by these present do bargain, sell and convey to W. A. Purvis a certain tract of land lying being and situate in the county of Anson and State of North Carolina and bounded as follows, to wit: Beginning at a stake in the state line 4th comer of R. Gaddy's tract and runs No. 15 W. 38.35 chains to a stake in McGugan's line 3rd comer of the Gaddy tract then No. 88 W. 11.40 chs. (chains) to a stake one pine pointer then south 37.50 chains to a stake in the State line. Then with State line East 21 chains to the beginning containing Sixty (60) acres. And the said James L. Edwards doth hereby warrant and defend unto the said W. A. Purvis his heirs Executor and assigns forever, the right and title to the said land together with all the rights and appurtenances thereunto belonging, against myself, my heirs Executors or assigns, and against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and date above mentioned.

Anson County} I Jack C. McLancklin Clerk of Superior Court for said county of Anson, hereby certify that the due execution of the foregoing deed of Conveyance to W. A. Purvis by James L. Edwards through SJ. Edwards his agent was proven before me this day by the oath and examination of Jesse Edwards the subscribing witness. Let it with this certificate be registered. This September 28th A.D. 1883.

The above land deed for 60 acres was the first tract of Land that William A. Purvis purchased in Anson County, NC. With this purchase William triple his farming capacity.
The bottom portion of this tract ran along the North and South Carolina State Line. The farm was located south west of McFarland, North Carolina on the west side of Zoar Road.
Both my Great Great Grandfather William A. and his son William James own  land adjoining each other. They worked their little farm together until the late 1880’s at which the land was lost due to their ability to repay mortgages and sold for unpaid taxes. Together they at one time had a pretty good size farm in this part of the county.
