Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriages of Adam Dry

When the Census Taker visited the Adam Dry household (Dwelling 272, Family 273) on 16 August 1850 he recorded two members within the household:

• Line 18, Dwelling 272, Family 273
• Adam Dry, Male, age 23
• Elizabeth (Layton) Dry, Female, age 28.

There’s no doubt that the Census Taker noticed that Elizabeth was carrying a child; a child that was born just two months later on 20 October 1850, their firstborn, a son, Moses Adam Dry.

No Marriage document has been found that records this marriage but we know it most likely took place before 20 January 1850. This is substantiated by the 1900 Census which also shows Adam and Elizabeth marriage year as 1850. 



Adam and Elizabeth were married 55 years before her death in 1905. They would raise a family of six children; 5 sons and a daughter of which four were still living upon her death including her daughter.

After the death of Elizabeth, Adam decided that he needed a new companion marring a widower Sarah A. Eudy on 11 September 1906.

 

Sarah A. Burlson, the widow of Julius M. Eudy, was the daughter of Joseph Burlson and Lucy E. Almond. Julius and Sarah were married 5 November 1868 and he (Julius) had passed away on 2 Nov 1880.

Eight years after their marriage Adam Dry passed away on 19 January 1914 and two years later Sarah A. Burlson Eudy Dry passed away on 19 December 1916.

ADAM DRY TO B. H. CARTER
This Indenture made this 10th day of March A D 1859 Between Adam Dry Executor of George Dry of the County of Stanly + State of N. Carolina of the one part and B. H. Carter of the County of Stanly + State of N. Carolina of the other part Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for + in consideration of the sum of Two hundred + fifty nine dollars to the said party of the first part in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath sold + conveyed + doth hereby sell + convey to the said party of the second part all that tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Stanly + State of N. Carolina bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning at a stake by a red oak and white oak + runs So 16 Et 8 chains + 50 links to a stake thence So 88 Et 15 chains + 80 links to a stake by 2 post oaks thence No 1 ½ Et 8 chs + 25 links to a stake by a pine + white oak then So 88 Et 42 chs + 75 links passing Daniels corner to a stake by several small pines then No 8 chains to a red oak in the line then with said – No 88 Wt 63 chs + 76 links to a stake in B. H. Carters line then with it So 16 Et 8 chains + 50 links to the beginning containing 65 acres more or less. To have and to hold the same with the appurtenances thereunto belonging to him the said party of the second part his heirs + assigns forever And the said party of the first part for and inconsideration aforesaid doth hereby covenant + agree to warrant + defend the premises aforesaid to the said party of the second part his heirs executors administrators + assigns against the claim + entry of all persons whosoever and he doth further covenant that he is seized of the premises in fee simple + hath power to make + convey such an estate by this Indenture + hath done the same by these presents to the said B. H. Carter so far as his authority as Executor extends + no further. In Witness whereof the said party of the first part hath set his hand + seal the day + year above writen.<sic>

George M. Dry passed away on 6 January 1857 at the age of 57. He left surviving him, his widow, Mary 'Polly' Sides Dry and 9 children; 6 sons and 3 daughters.

Adam, the executor of his estate, was his second born son. 

George M. Dry is my 3 Great Grand Uncle.

John Rufus Dry

John Rufus Dry was a son of Adam Dry and Elizabeth ‘Bettie’ Layton. He married Lucy Victoria Sides on 29 December 1886 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

John Rufus Dry is my 2nd Cousin 3 times removed.
