It’s Family Time~Mary Jane Purvis Lang

Its-Family-Time2
In the 1880 Census Mary Jane Purvis and her mother, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Purvis are enumerated in the household of William A. Purvis and His Wife Sarah Jane (Graves) Purvis.

Mary Jane’s age is reported to be 7 years of age.

1880 Census
Sarah Jane Graves Purvis died in December 1893 and a Land Deed dated 23 September 1899 shows Betsy Purvis as the wife of William A. Purvis. DNA test results also shows that William A. Purvis and these children are related which suggests that the 1st husband of Betsy was also related to William A. Purvis hence the Purvis surname in 1880 census.

In 1888, Mary Jane Purvis and Charlie Franklin Lang were married. Charlie was the son of John H. Lang and Frances A. Teel. By 1893, Charlie and Mary Jane had three children of which one passed away during birth or shortly thereafter.

Then in March 1895, Mary Jane had her 4th child, a daughter named Frances Elizabeth ‘Effy’ Lang. While this birth was a treasure it also turned out to be a tragedy for the family. All indications are that Mary Jane did not survive the birth of this child. This left Charlie in a very troublesome situation with 3 small children.

In 1898, Charlie Franklin Lang married Dora Watkins, daughter of Calvin Watkins and Sarah Kelly.

Charles Franklin Lang and Mary Jane Purvis had the following children:

i. Ella Jane Lang, born 4 Aug 1889, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jack E. Dillard; died 18 May 1960, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
ii. John Henry Lang, born 14 Jan 1893, Anson County, North Carolina; married Edith Melvine Stowe; married Blonnie Irene Gunter; married Edna Eveline Ashley; died 29 Apr 1968, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
iii. Unnamed Male Lang was buried in Jan 1893. He was born on 14 Jan 1893 in SC. He died on 14 Jan 1893 at the age of 0. SOURCE: Gordon E. Lutz, Lincolnton, NC.
iv. Frances Elizabeth "Effie" Lang, born Mar 1895, Marshville, Union, North Carolina; married Jacob Brown, 26 Nov 1910, Union County, North Carolina; married Will L. Threate, 1916, Union County, North Carolina; married Floyd Pinkney Reinhardt; died 13 Mar 1949.

Mary Jane Purvis Lang is my Great Grand Aunt.

It’s Family Time~Ella Frances Purvis

clip_image001

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2016/07/its-family-timemary-jane-purvis.html

In the above posting I introduced you to the concept that William A. Purvis was twice married; discuss his second wife – Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Purvis – and documented the family of her oldest daughter, Mary Jane Purvis Lang.

Remember that in the 1880 Census, Betsy and her daughter Mary J. was listed as Family 252 in the same Dwelling  233 as William A. and Sarah J. Purvis (Family 251). No husband was present nor has a husband been identified for Betsy prior to the September 1899 Land Deed (DB 33, pg 370).

Purvis 1880

We do know that the Anson County Land Deed (DB 33, pg 370) identified Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Purvis as the wife of William A. Purvis. We also know that William A. married Sarah Jane Graves on 19 June 1852 and that Sarah Jane died on 31 December 1893.

Therefore, if William did in fact remarry it had to occur between 1 Jan 1894 and 23 Sept. 1899. Yet, in the 1900 census, we find Betsy with another daughter, Ella Frances Purvis, b. 25 September 1881.

1900 Census - Anson County

This little snippet from the 1900 Census contains significant information; but, there is also conflicting information.
  • Elizabeth Purvis is was Widow (the census date is 28 June 1900
  • Elizabeth had 2 children 1 living; Mary J. and Ella Frances Purvis
  • Elizabeth was born in Oct. 1860; Ella Frances was born in Dec. 1886
We still find no mention of any husband prior to the 1890’s so Who is the father of Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ children – Mary J. and Ella Frances.

When was Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ born in 1880 she is age 30; in 1900 she is age 39, born Oct. 1860.  Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ was still living on the Purvis farm in 1900.

On 14 August 1904, daughter Ella Frances married  Thomas T. Tarlton in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

On 30 September 1900, Betsy gives up her life estate in the 19 acres William A. Purvis left her selling the land to J. D. Rhyne for a measly $50.00 dollars. (DB 34, Page 491-492, Betsy Purvis to J. D. Rhyne, Anson Co., NC). Betsy moves in with Tom and Ella Tarlton.

In the 1920 Census we find Ellen and Tom with 5 children and her Mother, Elizabeth Purvis, age 75, in the household all living in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina.  Elizabeth in 1900 said she was born in October 1860; now in 1920 she is 75 years of age. That computes to a birth year of 1845. Elizabeth ‘Betsy” Purvis died on 18 October 1926. To add to the confusion her obituary states that she is 90 years old, a birth year of 1836.

Mrs. Betsy Purvis
Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day.

Tom and Ella had seven children; 2 daughters and 5 sons. I spent a lot of time talking on the phone and corresponding with the two daughters.

While my family and Ella Frances family were from the same Grandparent it was as if neither knew anything of the other family. I can’t help to believe that William A. Purvis only son, my Great Grandfather William James Purvis, disapproved of his father’s remarriage, if a marriage occurred and kept it a family secret.

I just had a 92 year old Aunt who passed away and she knew nothing of this family and great aunts that I talked to claimed to have no knowledge of what I was talking about.

If you have any information om Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Purvis and her two daughters, Mary Jane Purvis wife of Charlie Franklin Lang and Ella Frances Purvis, wife of Thomas T. Tarlton I would love to hear from you.

Census Sunday~Mystery Woman, Betsy Purvis

There is no history in our family of a divorce or re-marriage of any of my Grandparents. However, in my research of my 2nd Great Grandfather, William A. Purvis, I have discovered what I believe is a  “marital affair” and quite possible a remarriage after the death of his wife Sarah Jane Graves.

The 1880 Census for Anson County, NC provides a “real mystery” for this researcher.1 Who is Betsy Purvis?

1880 Anson County -W. A. Purvis
1880 Census, Anson Co., NC
.

An enlarge section showing the William A. Purvis household.

W. A. Purvis 1880

We see that Dwelling 233 contained two families in the William A. Purvice [Purvis] household consist of:
Dwelling 233
Family 251
  • William A. Purvice, age 53
  • Sarah J. Purvice, age 38, Wife
Family 252
  • Betsy Purvis, age 30, no relationship noted
  • Mary J., age 7, Daughter
Now this is 1880 and I don’t believe they had duplex apartments in the rural areas of Anson County, NC during this time period. Thus we have two families living in one household and most likely related in some way. Sharing the same surname is another clue to a possible relationship situation.
Keep in mind that William A. Purvis is my brick wall. There are no known parents or siblings.

My 2nd Great grandmother, Sarah Jane is believed to have passed away 31 December 1893. This obituary appeared in the Messenger-Intelligencer on 4 January 1894, page 3. 2

McFarlan News - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. PERVIS was preached by this writer in the M. E. Church of this place last Sunday [31 Dec. 1893]. She was a good old woman. She had suffered intensely for fifteen months from cancer. She was a member of the M. E. church about 20 years.

There were no other Wm. Pervis in Anson County during this time period.

There is an Anson County Land Deed between William A. Purvis & wife, Elizabeth recorded in DB 33, Page 370, W. A. Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis to J. D. Rhyne. 3

DB33pg370

W. A. PURVIS AND WIFE ELIZABETH PURVIS
TO

J. D. RHYNE DEED
NORTH CAROLINA} This deed made this 23rd day of September, Anson County, 1899 by W.A. Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis of Anson County and State of North Carolina of the first part and J.D. Rhyne of said county and state of the second part witnesseth that said W.A. Purvis and wife in consideration of fifty four dollars to them paid by J.D. Rhyne.

A clear indication that he married Elizabeth after the death of his wife, Sarah Jane Graves.

This is also the last document I have found whereby William A. Purvis was named. The date of this Land Deed is 23 September 1899. William A. Purvis died between this date and the 1900 Census enumeration on 28 June 1900.

Betsy is listed in the 1900 Census with daughter Ella Frances born 25 September 1881. Daughter Mary J. Purvis, listed in the 1880 Census above married Charlie Franklin LANG about 1888.  She died during childbirth in March 1895. 4

We see in the 1900 census that Elizabeth is a Widow and that she has two daughter with 1 living. Daughter Mary J. Purvis passed away and Ella Frances is still home. We also see that the census shows that Daughter Ella Frances was born in December 1886. From the 1880 census, the only male in that household was my 2nd Great Grandfather, William A. Purvis and living next door was his son William J. Purvis and wife Mary. Sarah was still living in 1886 but we know from her obituary that she “suffered intensely for fifteen months from cancer”.

Is William the father of Ella Frances? Her application for Social Security (SS-5) say that she is the daughter of William Purvis and his wife Betsey Privett. 5

Betsy Purvis (5)

Ella Frances Purvis married Thomas T. Tarlton 14 August 1904. She died in 1971 and her death certificate shows her parents as Billy Purvis and Betty Previtte. 6

NCDC-ELLA FRANCES TARLTON

Notice also that the 1900 census shows Elizabeth Purvis as age 39; born October 1860; remember she was age 30 in the 1880 census.  That is a discrepancy of 10 year. Also the 1900 Census shows Ella Frances, age 13, born December 1886 and now her death certificate shows that she was born 25 September 1881.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Previtte Purvis died 18 October 1926 in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina. Her obituary was miniscule. 7 8

Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day.

I’m still working the the math that gets you from age 39 in 1900 to age 90 in 1926. However, age 30 in 1880 would make her 76 years old at her death.

Mrs.Betsy Purvis

To add to the confusion, Mrs. Betsy Purvis, ages another 5 years between the writing of her obituary and the filing of her death certificate to the grand old age of 95.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Privette does not seem to exist prior to 1880. No record of her can be found beyond what is mentioned above and another land deed in 1900.

So tell me what you think? Did William A. Purvis have a “female companion” other than his wife and did he marry her after the death of his spouse? Comments welcome.

Mystery Monday~Strangers in The Home and Proof of Two Wives

There are many in this field that claims there is no such thing as a “brick wall”. Using the genealogical Proof standard as their anchor, they will tell you that your research efforts are incomplete or your evaluation of the evidence is faulty, etc.

To say the parentage of William A. Purvis is unknown is an understatement of the time and effort I have spent trying to break through this barrier; this brick wall.

Years ago, way back in 1976 I became interested in genealogy after reading Alex Haley’s “Roots”. Like all budding genealogist I thought I knew exactly where to get some answers. After many letters to my aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles with no response and interviews with them, I realized my family knew very little about their ancestors.

So off I go looking first at my “PURVIS” line. Grandma Purvis was still living so it was easy to get the line back to her husband. There’s me, my dad, Grandpa James F. Purvis and Great Grandpa William James Purvis.

I have found Grandpa and Great Grandpa in available censuses for that time, the 1900-1920 censuses.
But now I have my first mystery – Where is Grandpa James F. Purvis and his wife Lucy Pearl in 1910. Still to day I have not found them in 1910. I know they were married then and should be listed. Lucy‘s dad, John Calvin Deese, names her as Lucy Purvis when he wrote his will in 1908 so we know she was married sometime before that date.

In order to get Great Great Grandpa’s name I had to get my great Grandfather William James death certificate. His death certificate shows that his father was William Purvis and his mother was Sarah Graves.

clip_image002
NC Death Cert. Wm. J. Purvis

Back to the census I go and locate William and Sarah in 1860-1870 and 1880 Anson County. The 1880 census provided another mystery and a surprise.

First, the surprise: William James Purvis, age 16, is married and living with his bride Mary Hulda next door to William A. Purvis and Sarah Jane.

clip_image004
1880 Census – Anson County

The mystery: Who is the Betsy Purvis with daughter Mary J. Purvis in the household of William and Sarah Purvis. This is still a mystery today; but, Betsy will play another role later in this story.

Off to the census again we go. After many hours of research William A. and Sarah have not been found in the 1900 census nor has William been found anywhere prior to 1860.

Sarah Jane was found in the 1850 census for Chesterfield County, SC.

clip_image006
1850 Chesterfield Co., SC

Then there the mystery couple in William A. Purvis household in the 1860 Anson County Census.

clip_image007
1860 Anson Co., NC

What is the relationship of this couple to William A. & Sarah Purvis. According to the death certificate of one of the White children, Laura White’s maiden name is “BROCK”. But, still Joseph White and Laura Brock White are a mystery.

For many years this line stayed stagnant as documented. Then a local researcher in Anson County sent me this death notice, which I believe is the death of Sarah Jane Graves Purvis, wife of William A. Purvis.

Messenger-Intelligencer issue of January 4, 1894, page 3, McFarlan News - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. PERVIS was preached by this writer in the M. E. Church of this place last Sunday [31 Dec. 1893]. She was a good old woman. She had suffered intensely for fifteen months from cancer. She was a member of the M. E. church about 20 years. [SOURCE: Steve Bailey]

About the same time, I began to look at some of the available deeds filmed by the LDS Family History Library. In total I have 7 land deeds and 21 “deeds of trust” and there may be more. For the purpose of this article, we will discuss 2 land deeds.
The land deeds provided the biggest surprise of them all - William A. Purvis was twice married.
All Deeds are from the Register of Deeds, Wadesboro, Anson County, NC.

The first deed took place in Sept 1883 between William A. Purvis and wife to Jefferson D. Rhine (DB 22: 532-533). Named within the deed is William’s wife – Sarah J. [Graves] Purvis.

clip_image009
(DB 22: 532-533)

The second deed was executed on 23 September 1899 between W. A. Purvis & Wife Elizabeth Purvis to J. D. Rhyne. (DB33:370)

clip_image011
(DB33:370)

Remember the death notice; - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. PERVIS was preached- this suggests that Sarah Jane Graves Purvis died 31 December 1893.

Now six years later we have W. A. Purvis and Wife Elizabeth named within a land deed selling land that was purchased by W. A. Purvis and his wife Sarah Jane back in the mid-1880’s.

I know that William A. Purvis signed with his mark this land deed (DB33:370) on 23 September 1899 and I know that when the 1900 Census was enumerated on 28 June 1900 that he was deceased. He died sometime between these two dates. No obituary or tombstone has been found marking his interment.

Now that we know about the new Wife it’s time to look for her in the 1900 Census and we find the “Widow” Purvis enumerated in the census on the 28th June 1900 in Anson County, NC.

clip_image013
1900 Anson County, NC.

Behold, we have a new mystery, Elizabeth, the widow” says she has 2 children, 1 living and that daughter Ella was born in Dec 1886. So who is the Father of Ella Purvis; is she an illegitimate child of William A. Purvis. Remember the Besty Purvis that was enumerated in the household of William Purvis in 1880. Could Mary J. Purvis, listed in 1880, be the 2 child of Elizabeth Purvis and who is her father? Mary J. Purvis married Charles Franklin Lang and died due to childbirth complications in March 1895.

Ella Frances Purvis married Tom T. Tarlton. I had the pleasure of talking to the two daughters of Ella Frances Tarlton before they passed away.

Elizabeth ”Betsy” Purvis died 18 October 1926 in Rockingham, Richmond County, NC.

Mrs. Betsy Purvis
Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day.
[The Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Richmond County, NC, Thursday, October 21, 1926, Page 6, Column 2 - Deaths]

No tombstone has been found in the Mizpah Cemetery marking her grave.

I have a living Aunt that was born in 1923 and she claims no knowledge of any of these events.

This line has been so difficult and today 37 years later I still have more questions than answers.

I would love to hear your comments and suggestions on how to break through this "brick wall" and solved some of the mysteries surrounding my 2nd great grandfather, William A. Purvis.

Purvis being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband, touching her voluntary execution thereof doth state on such, her private examination that she had executed the same freely and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband or any other person and that she doth still voluntarily assent thereto: Let the Deed of Conveyance with this certificate be registered this September 28th 1883.
John C. McLancklin
Clerk of Superior Court

My great great grandfather William A. Purvis and his 1st wife Sarah Jane Graves purchased this land from James L. Edwards in December 1872. Here a short 11 years later he is selling the land to J. D. Rhyne.

Available records show that William A.and his son William James struggled each year after the the Civil War with their farming. Deed of Trusts, for this period, shows that each year they had to borrow, against the farm,   enough money to put crops in for the following years and after the loan was repaid not much was left. Tax records show that they were sometimes delinquent for the tax year.

Regardless, William A. managed to hang on to some land up until September 1899 (DB 33:370). William A. died shortly after he and his wife Betsy sold their last 12 acres of land to J. D. Rhyne. Betsy, believed to be his second wife based on this deed (DB 33:370)  died on 18 Oct 1926 in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina. No death certificate, tombstone or obituary has been found for William A. Purvis. He was alive on 23 September 1899 (Signed Deed) and died before 28 June 1900 (1900 Census enumerated).

Data Analysis - William A. Purvis, 1880 to 1926

Yesterday, we ended the review with the Anson County, NC 1880 Census [1]where we find Betsy Purvis and her daughter Mary J. Purvis, age 13, enumerated in the household of William A. and Sarah Purvis.

Two of the three families’ shown in this 1880 census snippet are my 2nd Great Grandparents – William A. Purvis and Sarah Jane Graves Purvis and William James Purvis and his wife Mary Hulda Previtte Purvis; the relationship of  and to the 3rd family, Betsy Purvis and Mary J. Purvis are unknown.

In the 1870, there is also an unmarried Female Purvis with children living next door to William and Sarah Purvis.

1870 CENSUS: Morven Twp, Anson County, North Carolina. Series: M593  Roll: 1122, Microfilm # 552,621, Pg. 403A, Line 1, Dwelling 179, Family 179. S.[arah] PERVIS, age 49, Elizabeth PERVIS, age 17, William PERVIS, age 15; John PERVIS, age 12 and Caswell PERVIS, age 10, all born in North Carolina.[2] [3]

Could the Elizabeth Purvis, age 17 in this Household also be the Betsy Purvis in W. A. Purvis household in 1880?

In February 1880 and March 1881, William A. and his son William J. Purvis borrowed money in order to buy the necessary supplies to plant a crop.

Note: I’m not quite sure how a 17 year lad can sign a mortgage borrowing money to plant a crop.

Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis & W. J. Purvis to Marshall & Richardson, Anson Co., NC, Book 11, Page 529.

Trust Deed - W. A. Pervis to Marshall & Richardson, Anson Co., NC, Book 13, Pages 107.

On 3 March 1881, the same day that William A. Purvis borrows $200 from Marshall & Richardson; he also sells of 30 acres (DB 21:401) of his land for a sum of $125.80 which I suspect was to pay off past debts. This land was the 30 acres he purchased from W. P. Brantley 21 Dec 1873. [4]

Now the Trust Deeds (mortgages) are getting more frequently with:

16 Jan 1882 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis & others to J. D. Harden, Anson Co., NC, Book 15, Pages 23-24. [Others are William J., Sarah J., and Mary H. Purvis]

18 April 1882 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis to J. D. Harden, Anson Co., NC, Book 15, Page 157

September 1882 – It was about this time that William A. and Sarah Jane learned that Sarah Jane had Cancer.

7 March 1883 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis to Thompson & Moore, Anson Co., NC, Book 16, Page 158.
28 September 1883 - Trust Deed - Jefferson D. Rhine to Wm. A. Purvis, Anson Co., NC, Book 16, Page 428.

Also on 28 September 1883 we have a sell-off of the 60 acres parcel purchased from James L . Edward in 1871 to Jefferson D. Rhyne. [5]

Bad times are turning to more bad times with a continuing cycle of borrowing money to purchase seed to plant the Crop, toil and labor on the farm all year to find that the crops were not enough to pay everything off and continuing the same cycle year after year after year.

15 January 1884 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis to Thompson & Moore, Anson Co., NC, Book 16, Pages 561-562.  ($225.00)

2 July 1884 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis & wife to Thompson & Moore, Anson Co., NC, Book 18, Pages 63-65.

3 Dec 1884 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis & wife to Thompson & Moore, Anson Co., NC, Book 18, Pages 202-203.

25 February 1885 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis to C. C. Moore & Co., Anson Co., NC, Book 18, Pages 546-547.
22 April 1886 - Trust Deed - W. A. Purvis to J. T. Moore, Anson Co., NC, Book 20, Page 611.

And then tragedy struck on 31 December 1893, Sarah Jane [Graves] Purvis passes away after suffering from cancer for the past fifteen months. (Sept 1882-Dec 1893)

DEATH: Messenger-Intelligencer issue of January 4, 1894, page 3, McFarlan News - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. Pervis was preached by this writer in the M. E. Church of this place last Sunday [31 Dec. 1893]. She was a good old woman. She had suffered intensely for fifteen months from cancer. She was a member of the M. E. church about 20 years. [Source: Steve Bailey]

The M. E. Church referred to here is most likely Zoar United Methodist Church and though no tombstones have been found for William and  Sarah Jane; they are most likely buried at Zoar. Their only child, my Great Grandfather William James Purvis and his wife are buried in the cemetery.

Five years after burying his wife Sarah Jane we have William A. Purvis selling more of his property to Jefferson D. Rhyne. The land deed for this parcel is titled - W. A. Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis to J. D. Rhyne, Anson County, NC, Book 33, Page 370.[6]

This indicates to me that William A. remarried after Sarah Jane died in 1893 and his new wife is Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis.

“NORTH CAROLINA} This deed made this 23rd day of September, Anson County, 1899 by W.A.Purvis and wife Elizabeth Purvis of Anson County and State of North Carolina of the first part and J.D. Rhyne of said county and state of the second part witnesseth that said W.A. Purvis and wife in consideration of fifty four dollars to them paid by J.D. Rhyne. The receipt of which is hereby acknowledged has bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain, sell and convey to said J.D. Rhyne and his heirs a certain tract or parcel of land in Morven Township, Anson County, State of North Carolina. Adjoining the lands of Jms. Davis, Jms. McGugan, Dr. W.J. McLendon and J.D. Rhyne. Bounded to follows. Beginning at McGugan's corner in McLendon line and running east six chains to Rhyne's corner. Then with Rhyne's line south to a corner in his line 392 yds. Thence west to Davis line 7 1/2 chains. Thence direct to the beginning corner containing twelve acres more or less”. [7] [Book 33, Page 370]

If we go back about 15 years we see that this tract of land is part of a 30 acre tract that William A. Purvis and his wife Sarah Jane purchased. Now on 23 September 1899 it is being broken up into a 12 and 18 acres parcel. William A. and his new wife Elizabeth is selling off 12 acres to J. D. Rhyne. At this point J. D. Rhyne now owns every acres of land that William A. and Sarah Jane Purvis purchased except for 18 acres.
28 June 1900, the Census taker is checking off the houses in Anson County and is at the door of Household 337, Family 338. At home is Elizabeth Purvis, age 40, Widower, born Oct 1869 in NC and her daughter Ella Purvis, age 13, born Dec 1886 in North Carolina. Elizabeth tells the Census taker that she 2 children but only one is living.

1900 CENSUS: Morven Twp, Anson Co., NC; Series: T623, Roll: 1181, Page: 145, Line 20, Household 337/338; Elizabeth PURVIS, age 40, Wd., born Oct 1869 in NC; Ella PURVIS, daughter, age 13, born Dec 1886 in NC.

Elizabeth Purvis did have two children:

  1.        Mary Jane Purvis, b. abt 1873, married Charlie Franklin Lang, abt 1888, had 4 children. Ella died during or shortly after giving birth to her 4th child – Frances Elizabeth Purvis, b. March 1895 in Marshville, Union County, North Carolina.
  2.        Ella Frances Purvis, b. 25 September 1886, Anson County, NC; married Thomas T. Tarlton, 14 Aug 1904, Anson County, NC. They had 8 children. Ella Frances Purvis Tarlton died 27 November 1971 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC.

a.       Ella Frances Tarlton Social Security Form shows her parent as Billie Purvis and Betsy Prevett.

The obvious point here is that Elizabeth is a Widow indicating that between 23 September 1899, when William A. Purvis signed with his mark on a Land Deed (DB 33:370) and today 28 June 1900 that he, William A. Purvis has passed away and Elizabeth and Ella are carrying on with their lives.

The 1900 Census shows Elizabeth [Line 20] living next door to Jeff D. Rhyne and we see other names mentioned in the land deeds, i.e. McGugan.

The final land deed shows that William A. Purvis ensured that Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis, his wife, had a place to live for her natural life. But, daughter Ella married Thomas T. Tarlton and so Elizabeth had a choice. Stay all along at her age out on the farm or moved in with her daughter and new son-in-law.

On 30 September 1900, Betsy sold the final acreage (18 acres) to Jefferson D. Rhyne retaining six (6) acres and a house as a life estate.[8]

Jefferson D. Rhyne has finally acquired ALL of the land previously owned by my 2nd Great Grandparents William A. Purvis and Sarah Jane Graves Purvis.

By 1910, Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis had abandon the “farm” and life estate and moved in with her daughter Ella and son-in-law Tom Tarlton. [9]

On 18 Oct 1926, Betsy Purvis died in Rockingham, NC while living with Ella and Tom Tarlton. She was buried at Mizpah Cemetery. No tombstone marks her grave and little was said about her in the final hours.[10]

Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day.

Mystery Monday – The Parents of William A. Purvis

This posting is meant to be a public summary of my brick wall and a public acknowledgement that I need your help to solve this puzzle.

The parents of William A. Purvis have been my brick wall and have stumped me for 35 of the 36 years I have been researching. At the time I started researching I was in the Air Force and away from home. Telephone calls and letters home resulted in no useful information.

William A. Purvis was born between 1824 and 1827 according to the three censuses that he has been listed within.

YEAR CO/ST NAME AGE BIRTH/STATE COMMENTS

Dwelling 223, Family 252, Betsy PURVIS, age 30, born in NC, parents born in NC; Mary J. PURVIS, age 7, born in NC, parents born in NC. (Spelled PURVICE on Ancestry).

William A. Purvis married Sarah Jane Grave of Chesterfield, South Carolina before the 1860 Census were enumerated. They had one known child my Great Grand Father William James Purvis, born 23 September 1863.

Sarah Jane died 30 December 1893 in McFarland, Anson County, North Carolina. William and his son William James own property about 2 miles SW of McFarland.

DEATH: Messenger-Intelligencer issue of January 4, 1894, page 3, McFarlan News - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. Pervis was preached by this writer in the M. E. [Source: Steve Bailey][4]

An Anson County Land Deed (DB 33, page 370) dated 23 September 1899 does two things. One it showed that William A. Purvis is still living on 23 September 1899 and two that he most probable remarried after the death of his first Wife Sarah Jane Grave in September 1893. [5]

clip_image002

An interesting part of this puzzle is that I believe that Elizabeth Purvis mentioned in this deed is Betsey Purvis living with Sarah Jane and William A. Purvice in the 1880 Census.

Another interesting piece of information is that every document and there are many that William A. Purvis signed his name is listed as William A. Purvis, he marks with an X. I only have one document where William every attempted to sign his name to the document; but, he was always William A. Purvis.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Purvis (1849-18 Oct 1926) according to a document provided by the Social Security Administration was Betty Prevett. She had two daughters Mary Jane Purvis and Ella Frances Purvis.

  • Mary Jane Purvis, born 1873 – died abt Mar 1895; First child born in 1889 last child born Mar 1895; had 4 children; married Charles Franklin Lang (3 Apr. 1868-28 Aug 1948).
  • Ella Frances Purvis, born 25 Sept 1881, died 27 Nov 1971; married Thomas T. Tarlton (20 Nov. 1870-15 May 1964).

Note: The father of these two children is unknown to me. Are they William A. Purvis children; I don’t know.

Betsy Prevett Purvis died in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina on 18 Oct 1926.[6] She is buried in Mizpah Cemetery, Rockingham, NC. There is no tombstone marking her grave.

clip_image004

Her Obituary as seen here was no help.

Mrs. Betsy Purvis
Mrs. Betsy Purvis, aged 90, died Oct. 18th in Great Falls village. The interment was at Mizpah the same day. [The Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Richmond County, NC, Thursday, October 21, 1926, Page 6, Column 2 - Deaths] [7]

William A. Purvis is not listed in the 1900 Census for Anson County, North Carolina. Betsey is listed with her daughter Ella Frances Purvis[8]

1900 CENSUS: Morven Twp, Anson Co., NC; Series: T623, Roll: 1181, Page: 145, Line 20, Dwelling 337, Family 338; Elizabeth PURVIS, age 40, Wd., born Oct 1869 in NC; Ella PURVIS, daughter, age 13, born Dec 1886 in NC.

The 1900 Census for Anson County, Morven Township, were enumerated on 28 June 1900 by Thomas E. Dabbs.

Therefore, William A. Purvis died between 23 September 1899 (signing of Deed 33:370) and 28 June 1900 (C1900 Census enumerated). No Obituary or tombstone has been found for William A. Purvis.

On 20 September 1900, Betsy Purvis sold the remaining 18 acres of my Great Great Grandfather William A. Purvis’ land to Jefferson D. Rhyne retaining 6 acres and a home as a life estate. [9]

She abandons these 6 acres by 1910 and is living with her daughter Ella and her husband Tom T. Tarlton in the Gulledge Township. Thus Jefferson D. (J. D.) Rhyme ultimately acquired the entire 60 acres that Great Great grandfather William A. Purvis owned and farmed while living on this good earth.

Action Taken:
The only large contingency of Purvis near Anson County was the Purvis of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Over the years I have built an extensive database on these Purvis but have found no connection. This group of Purvis’ is descendants of John Purvis and Sarah Johnson and their sons Gilbert, James and Joseph.

There is a William A. Purvis in Nelson County, Virginia but he has a family there and there is no indication that he abandoned that family and moved to North Carolina. There is a William A. Purvis also that listed in a Mississippi census.

There a large contingency of Purvis in the eastern part of North Carolina. Those also have been looked at with no positive results.
