Tombstone Tuesday~John Calvin Davis

John Calvin Davis was the last born of 11 children to Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers. Born in December 1812, at age 23, he married Charlotte Hurst on 31 January 1836.

To this union were born 12 children; 6 sons and 6 daughters. John Calvin saw his two oldest sons leave home to fight in the Civil War and returned back home safely before he died on 12 July 1865.

John Calvin Davis was buried in the Kite Cemetery.

John Calvin Davis is my 3rd Great Grand Uncle. His brother Michael is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

Surname Saturday~John Calvin, Son of Thomas Davis


This is an ongoing series on the children of Thomas Davis and his wife Nancy Rivers. Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers are my 4th great grandparents. They had 11 known children that lived to adulthood.

This is a summary of the articles on Thomas, Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca and Sarah Jane Davis. 

Thus far, we have taken a look at 10 of the 11 children of Thomas and Nancy Rivers Davis. Those ten are Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Rebecca, Sarah Jane, Michael Davis and Mary “Polly” Davis.

Today’s posting is on child number 11 – John Calvin Davis, My 3rd Grand Uncle.

John Calvin Davis was born on 14 Dec 1812 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1 2 3 He appeared in censuses for Chesterfield County, South Carolina, from 1820 through 1860.4 5 John died on 12 Jul 1865 and was buried in the Kite Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.6 7 Vital statistic pages from his Family Bible are on file in the Darlington County Genealogical Society.8 A Memorial has been created for John at www.findagrave.com.9 10

John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst were married on 31 Jan 1836 in Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina. Charlotte Hurst, daughter of Philip Hurst and Elizabeth, was born on 9 Jul 1816 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1112 13 14 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Cole Hill, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.15 Charlotte died on 2 Jun 1888 in Darlington, South Carolina and was buried in the Kite cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.16 1718 A Memorial has been created for her at www.findagrave.com.19 Her estate, Estate Folder #160, Estate of Charlotte [HURST] DAVIS, was probated at Chesterfield County, South Carolina.20

John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst had the following children:

i. Thomas P. Davis, born 5 Oct 1837, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Nancy Jane Massey, abt 1858, Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 13 Nov 1885, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ii. Nancy J. Davis, born 17 Mar 1839, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married David Richard Teal, abt 1866; died 1895.

iii. William Reynolds Davis, born 14 Jan 1841, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Louisa Matilda Fraser, 1874, Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina; died 18 Sep 1915, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina.

iv. Eliza Ann Davis, born 24 Feb 1843, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Benjamin Nelson Stuckey, abt 1867, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 31 Oct 1903, Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina.

v. John Wesley Davis, born 30 Mar 1845, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Susan Adeline Ellis, 1 Jan 1873, Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina; died 25 Feb 1919, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina.

vi. Isaac Jacob Davis, born 24 Feb 1848, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Isabella Jane Teal, 20 Nov 1867, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Laura R. Boatwright, 26 Dec 1894, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 14 Oct 1917, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ix. Margaret Emaline Davis, born 2 Nov 1853, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married John William Wadsworth, 10 Jan 1878, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 19 Jan 1938, Darlington, Darlington, South Carolina.

x. James A. Davis, born 1 Mar 1856, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Anna Byrd; died 1882, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

xi. Henry Perkins Davis, born 19 May 1858, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Eugenia Cordelia Davis, 25 Dec 1879, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Martha Ellen Jones, 24 May 1899, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 26 Sep 1909, Florence, Florence, South Carolina.

Tombstone Tuesday~Henry Perkins Davis

Yesterday I was doing some census work on the Henry P. Davis family and decided to feature him on today’s Tombstone Tuesday posting.

Henry Perkins Davis was the son of John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst. He was the 11th child of 12 born to his parents.[1] [2] [3]

Henry married 1st Eugenia Cordelia Davis, b. Sept. 1862, a daughter of  David Richard Davis and Mary Cornelia McNair. Eugenia died 21 June 1898. Henry was left was a daughter (age 8) and a son (age 6) to care for after the loss of his wife. Henry then married, Martha Ellen Jones on 24 May 1899. [4]

Before his death in Sept. 1909; Henry and Martha had 4 children. She (Martha)  was pregnant at his death and their daughter Helen Vermelle Davis was born on 1 April 1910.

Henry and Eugenia Cornelia are buried at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery, Florence, Florence County, South Carolina. Martha Ellen Jones and Helen Vermellle Davis are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Florence, Florence County, South Carolina.
