Writes for the Chronicle.
Oliver Perry Rivers, son of David and Catherine Rivers, born in Chesterfield county, S. C. sixty-two years ago departed this life on September 26th, 1912, at his home in East Point, GA. If an honest man is the noblest work of God, then this man was one of God’s noblemen.  He was one of the first farmers in Chesterfield county to produce unusually large yields on his lands. He moved to Georgia and there married Miss Sallie Gailey, who with their child, Miss Mae Rivers,survives him. Mrs. O. P. Rivers, being an invalid. Of his brothers and sisters, four brothers, Hugh, of Atlanta, Ga., James C. of Birmingham, Ala., Adolphus, of Midland, Texas, Richard L. of Orange Hill, Chesterfield county and sisters, Mrs. Joseph Lowery, of Wingate, N.C. Misses Bessie and Sadie Rivers of Mt. Croghan, S.C. and Mrs. Samuel Boatwright, of Ruby, S.C. of these brothers, one--Hugh--served two years in the war between the States.  He leaves an enviable reputation as a loving father,a kind husband, a patriotic citizen and a real Christian.

Oliver Perry Rivers was born in May 1850 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, a son of David T. Rivers and Katherine Eugenia Edgeworth.

He married Sarah M. ‘Sallie’ Gailey on 18 Jan 1883 in Cherke, Cherokee County, Georgia. Sallie was the daughter of D. J. Gailey and Eliza Guthrie.

To this union was born one child, a daughter: Maude Mae Rivers, born May 1884 in Fulton County, Georgia.

Anson County NC Estates~Estate Folder for David T. Rivers, 1873

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield and nearby Counties. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

Today we will be looking at the Estate folder for:

David T. Rivers, 1873¹ 

This estate folder is an Anson County NC Estate Folder consisting of 6 images.

David T. Rivers, son of Lewis and Lenora Padgett Rivers, was born 4 February 1842  in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.While David was of age to serve in the Civil War I have found no indication that he did serve. He died on 15 January 1873 just a few weeks before his 31st birthday.

To the Judge of the Court of probate for Anson County
The application of Lewis Rivers for letters of administration on the Estate of David T. Rivers, deceased
1. The applicant states that David T. Rivers died Intestate illegible strike through on the 15^th day of January AD 1873 being then a resident of Anson County.
2. That the applicant is the proper person entitled to administration of the estate of the Decedent.
3. That his property consists of an interest in fee simple of an undivided fourth part of a tract of land lying in Anson County being near Meltonsville consisting of 395 acres, his part being worth about five hundred dollars-an interest in the store of Huntly Kendall & Co. worth about one thousand dollars. An undivided interest in three mules worth one hundred dollar, one horse worth one hundred dollars an interest in farming tools worth about ten dollars-an [illegible] interest in a cotton gin worth about twelve dollars, one note worth about ten dollars, and many apparel worth about fifteen dollars a bridle & saddle worth about eight dollars and some house hold furniture worth about ten dollars.-
4. That the applicant is the father of the decedent and his next of kin and resides in Chesterfield County South Carolina and his heirs at Law are his brother and sisters, to wit, Charles C. Rivers, who resides near White Store in Anson County Rebecca Myers illegible words in Anson County, Harriet Rivers who resides in Chesterfield County, South Carolina and Elizabeth Frances who resides in the same County and state.

David T. Rivers is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed; our common ancestor is Frederick Rivers.

Today’s subject is Chesterfield County, SC Estate Folder #22, David Rivers, February 1891.¹

David T. Rivers, son of Frederick F. Rivers and Sarah “Siddie" Boatwright, died on 8 February 1891. His lifetime mate, Katherine Eugenia Edgeworth, had passed away almost 18 1/2 years earlier on 28 September 1872. David and Katherine were married about 1844. Together they raised a family of eleven; 5 sons and 6 daughters.

His daughter Siddie Rivers submitted a request for Letters of Administration and was granted Administratorship of the Estate on 12 March 1891.

The petition of the undersigned respectfully represents to the Court
1^st That David Rivers late of Chesterfield County died intestate on the 8 day of Feb 1891 leaving a small personal Estate amounting to about Seventy five dollars
2^nd That letters of Administration has not [been] issued to any one and that the heirs of Said Estate have mutually agreed for letters of Administrations to be granted to the undersigned wherefore yore Petitioner prays that letters of Administrations be granted unto her in order that the Said Estate may be managed and Settled according to law and yore petitioner will ever pray

D. R Davis, J. C. Cason and A. H. Buchanan were appointed as appraisers for the estate on 7 March 1891. The inventory consisted of 3 pages of items with a total value of $84.97. 
The top three high value items in the estate were:

Mule – $15.70
Wagon – $12.75
Cow – $7.75




Goods worth $1 in 1891 dollars are now worth $26.32; so David’s 1891 Estate is valued at $2236.41 in today dollars.  

I haven’t checked the land records in Chesterfield County but there was no mention of land ownership in his estate file. If David owned any land it was sold or passed on to his sons before death.

The estate was settled and Letters of Dismissal were issued to Siddie Rivers on 19 March 1892.
