A Serious Loss to the Village of Chesterfield.

Special to The State.
Cheraw, Feb 24 – Chesterfield was visited by a most disastrous fire yesterday. It broke out about 11 O’clock in the office of Dr. D. T. Teal and spread until 19 buildings were consumed, some of them containing stocks of goods. The following are the principal buildings destroyed:

Dr. Teal’s office, S. J. Sellers’ store, with $300 or $400 worth of goods; D. H. Laney’s drug store and two-thirds of his stock; a large dwelling house belonging to Mr. Allen Chairman; W. W. Davis’ photograph gallery; W. F. Pate’s store, the old “Country House” and a house belonging to A. W. Davis in rear of the courthouse.

The entire loss by the fire is placed at $13,000 or $14, 000, with no insurance. The town has certainly been hit hard, and it will take hard work and grit to make good the loss. Chesterfield has the sympathy of her neighbor Cheraw in this her severe trial. 

21 November 2017 - Massive fire destroys 6 buildings in downtown Chesterfield – 1 1/2 year ago

The fire started in a business known as the Pink Door Store. Some of the business’ suffering damages such as fire, smoke and/or water were:

• The Pink Door Boutique
• Long's Pharmacy,
• a barber and beauty shop.
• Connie's Creative Cuts

I could find no mention of a Dollar value in loss for this fire.

The effectiveness of modern firefighting equipment and the training of our firefighters made a significant difference in these two fires.

• W. W. Davis is a 3rd Cousin twice removed.
• A. W. Davis is a 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Obituary Sunday~James C. Copeland

In 1860, James C. Copeland was a young lad, age 9, living in Chesterfield County, South Carolina with his parents Thomas F. Copeland and Sarah Ellen White. James had two brothers and two sisters -  Joseph, Lafate, Ellen and Sarah.



Family folklore reports that Thomas F. Copeland, Sarah Ellen and two of the five children died of “pestulence”¹ on a steamboat near Louisville, Kentucky in 1864.  This query was posted on-line in August 2003.²



I have been unable to find Thomas, Sarah Ellen (wife); Ellen (daughter) and Lafate Copeland after the 1860 Census and it’s certain something happen to them. However, this extraction of James C. Copeland obituary shows that Joseph, James , Sarah and Silas T. [born after Census] lived to adulthood.

The fate of Thomas F. Copeland (Father); Sarah Ellen White Copeland (Mother); Lafate (son) and Ellen (Daughter) Copeland is unknown; though I can only account for the loss of two children, not three.
 
We know that Silas T. Copeland was born in 1862; it’s possible there is another child that I am unaware of, born after the Census enumeration. Until he was, of age, he was in an Orphanage.

Silas's obituary states that he came to Evansville, Indiana fifty-three years ago. That would be in 1869 and James would have been 17 years old.

Military Monday – David Richard Teal

David Richard Teal's Civil War Record[1] can be found on Fold3.com , a paid subscription website. His entire record consists of 6 pages /image one of which page one is an Index page.

He enlisted on January 1, 1864, very late into the War.  He enlisted as a Private into Co. E, 21^st South Carolina Volunteers Infantry. This was Capt. Benjamin T. Davis outfit and many of his friend's neighbors and cousins were members of this unit.  He enlisted for 3 years and the January –February Muster Roil showed him due a $50.00 bounty.

The next image is a Muster Roll for April 30 - August 31, 1864 - This image showed that he was furlough 1 Sept. 1964 and again indicated he was due a $50.00 bounty.

Image 5 is a Muster Roll for Sept-Oct 1864 – shows David absent without and still due a bounty of $50.00.

He was captured on March 4, 1865 in Chesterfield, SC.   This is very important. March the 4^th 1865 was the day that Gen. Sherman Union forces entered the town of Chesterfield destroying everything and burning the Courthouse to the ground.  This is the second record that I have examined where Chesterfield men were captured at home on 4 March and imprisoned as POW's. The first was my second great grandfather Hezekiah Brock.

 

David Richard Teal made it back home from Point Lookout and Married Nancy J. Davis, daughter of John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst.  David and Nancy had 6 children; 5 daughters and a son. Nancy J. Davis Teal died in 1895[2] (date on Tombstone) and David Richard Teal remarried in 1897 to Lucinda Caulder; they had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Finally, Image 6 is the Oath of allegiance that David Richard teal signed upon his release from Point Lookout, Maryland on 21 June 1865.

Sunday Obituary: Mrs. Lavisa Gardner

Mrs. Lavisa Gardner an aged lady of the Shiloh section died at her home on Sunday afternoon, and was buried at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church on Tuesday morning. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. L. Tyler, assisted by Rev. Paul T. Wood. Mrs. Gardner was the wife of the late John Gardner, who died about ten years ago. She is survived by the following children , J. A. and C. B. Gardner, who live near Chesterfield; Calvin Gardner of Lydia; R. Clifton and Wade Gardner of Charlotte, NC; Furman Gardner, of Wadesboro, NC; W. P. Gardner, of Kokomo, Miss; Mrs. Calvin Sellers, and Sandy Purvis of Chesterfield and Mrs. J. W. Brigman of Rockingahm, NC. For several years Mrs. Gardner has been almost totally blind and in her affliction she exhibited a beautiful Christian spirit, and leaves an influence which will count in the coming years. [1][2]

Lavisa Gardner (nee Burr) was born 1 July 1834 and died 19 March 1916. She married John Nelson Gardner about 1855-1856. Their first child, a daughter was born in 1857.

UPDATE:
Additional Info has been brought to my attention:

 Lavisa Gardner’s  death certificate shows she died on 2 March 1916 (Thursday) and was buried on 3 March 1916 (Friday).

This conflict was the Obituary which states she died on Sunday (19) and was buried on Tuesday (21).

Additional research is needed to clear up conflict in death date.

On 16 February 1865 - William A. McCall was captured at Sampson County, NC. Sent from Newbern NC, by Capt. Perkins, Union Army, to Hart's Island, New York Harbor. He was released 16 June 1865. G.O. #109, dated 6 June 1865.

16 June 1865 - William A. McCall, Pvt., 1st SC Art'y signed an oath of allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn to at Hart's Island, NY Harbor on 16 June 1865. 

His place of residence is listed as Chesterfield District, SC. 

His vital statistics are listed as: - light complexion, light hair, blue eyes and 5' 8 1/2" tall.

Tombstone Tuesday – Miss Viola Davis

Viola Davis was born May 17, 1902, a daughter of William Thomas and Effie Mangum. She died April 13, 1921 in Chesterfield, South Carolina and was buried in Bethel Cemetery on 14 April 1921. She was burned as a young child and her SC Death Certificate [1]indicates her death was related to these burns.  

Miss Viola Davis, the 18 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Davis died at the home of her parents on the 1 of April. For several years preceding her death she was a great sufferer, but never lost the grace of patience. The phrase, "A beautiful child, a loving daughter and a noble sister," well describes her life during childhood. On April 14th, 1921, in the presence of a large number of friends and loved ones, Viola was laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Myers. She is survived by a father and mother, three brothers and six sisters. With aching hearts these left behind, bow submissively to His Divine will, and through their grief is intense yet they sorrow not as those who have no hope. May God's richest blessings rest upon the home and when "time shall be no more" may the family circle be unbroken about the throne of God.[2]

Migration and Relocation: The Wanderer's Lust

Most of us have the "wanderer's lust" or curiosity of what is over the next hill. Driving along and see a lovely trail off to somewhere and wondering where it leads. Maybe this wandering lust is what led me to leave home at 18 and join the Air Force; making it a career for the next 23 years.

Our early pioneers and settlers, the immigrants; they all had a wandering lust for a new beginning, a new frontier.

In 1818, there was a migration of families from Chesterfield County, SC through Georgia, to Clarke County, Alabama; then to Rankin County area of Mississippi and some even to Louisiana and Texas. The names of some of the Families in this migration were: Purvis, Holifield, Hancock, Rivers, Howell and Parks.

Then in the 1890's there was another migration of Chesterfield County families to Arkansas.  In this group were the Rivers, Hurst, Davis, Gainey and Lisenby or Lisemby families.  This migration, based on folklore, occurred in 1892.  A fact that is most likely true since the birth of the third child of John Lewis Rivers and Rosanna Lee Hurst occurred in Arkansas. John W. Rivers, born 8 March 1883 was their third child. 

The obituary for Samuel W. Lisenby states:

"Mr. Lisenby, who had engaged in farming since coming to the Cross Roads community in 1897, was a native of Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F. lodge."

Also among that group were the parents of siblings of Rosanna Hurst Rivers, Phillip James Hurst and Mary Anne Gainey.

Joseph Thurman Hurst, a brother of Rosanne Hurst Rivers, was married to Amanda J. Davis, b. about 1867. Her parents were Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Carolina Massey.  Not much is known about Amanda J. Davis and after years of research this puzzle lies unsolved.

Amanda & Joseph were married about 1885 in Chesterfield, South Carolina.  She was either 17 or 18 when they were married. Their firstborn, a son – Thomas Oscar Hurst was born 9 April 1886 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Next was born a daughter, Mary Eleanor Hurst on 18 Nov 1888 and finally a son – Joseph Hurst.  In 1890, Joseph & Amanda had a son named Joseph that was stillborn and is buried in Zoar Cemetery[1], Chesterfield, South Carolina. It's almost certain that Joe and Amanda made the trip together in 1892 to Arkansas; sometime between 1890 and 1900, Amanda  passed away, when & where is unknown but most likely in Arkansas during the birth of another child. No record of the death of Amanda J. Hurst has been found. 

Joseph is not done with his wandering; in 1900, he was found in Collin County, Texas, a widower. His son Thomas Oscar Hurst was living in Township 8, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory with his Uncle James M. Hurst a brother to Joseph Thurman Hurst.[2]

On February 8, 1903, Joseph married Keturah Melvina Bounds in Collin County, Texas.

Joseph Thruman Hurst was born on 27 May 1866 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Justice Precinct 4, Collin, Texas. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Justice Precinct 4, Collin, Texas. Joseph appeared in the census in 1920 in Justice Precinct 5, Brown, Texas. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Precinct 5, Brown, Texas. He died on 4 Sep 1961 at the age of 95 in Brownwood, Brown, Texas.[3] Joseph was buried on 6 Sep 1961 in Brownwood, Brown, Texas. Joseph Thruman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis were married about 1885 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Amanda J. Davis, daughter of Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Caroline Massey, was born in 1867 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. [5] [6] She died between 1890-1900.

Joseph Thruman Hurst and Amanda J. Davis had the following children:

          i. Thomas Oscar Hurst, born 9 Apr 1886, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married America Pearl Carruth, 2 Sep 1906, Brownwood, Brown,Tx; died 13 Sep 1948, Winchell, Brown Co., TX.

         ii. Mary Eleanor Hurst, born 18 Nov 1888, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, ; married Ben P. Stiles, 7 Feb 1906, Collin County,Tx; died 13 May 1943, Collin County,Tx.

        iii. Joseph Hurst was born in 1890 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, . He died in 1890 at the age of 0 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was buried in 1890 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Joseph Thruman Hurst and Keturah Melvina Bounds were married on 8 Feb 1903 in Collin Co.,Texas.[7] [8] Keturah Melvina Bounds, daughter of Carroll W. Bounds and Mary L., was born on 31 May 1876 in Collin County,Texas. She died on 8 May 1957 at the age of 80 in Brownwood, Brown,Texas.[9] She was buried on 9 May 1957 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas.
