Today’s subject is the Sale of James Purvis, Sr. Estate Lands

James Purvis, Sr., age 76, died about November 1836 in Rankin County, Mississippi. Two of his sons, John and George, were assigned as administrators of the estate. Also, as a party on the deed is another son, Alexander.

This land deed (DB 5, page 209 & 210) shows that Daniel Taylor purchased the 80 acres for a sum of four hundred dollars. No explanation is given for waiting two years after the death of James Sr. to sell the property.

This indenture made and entered into this the third day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine between John Purvis & George Purvis who is administrators of the estate of James Purvis deceased and also Alexander Purvis whose name is subscribed to this of the County of Rankin and Sate of Mississippi of the first part and Daniel Taylor of the same County and State aforesaid of the second part – Witnefseth that for and in consideration of the Sum of Four hundred dollars to them in hand well and truly paid by the party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained sold conveyed and confirmed am doth by these presents Sell convey and confirm unto the said party of the Second and to his heirs and assigns forever the following described land situate lying and being in the county and State aforesaid and described as follow to wit: the N ½ of the E ½ of the South East quarter and the N1/2 of the W ½ of SE ¼ of Section No. 23 in Township No. 5 of range No 5 East containing Eighty acres more or lefs to have and to hold with all and singular the improvements and appurtenances of right belonging to the said premises unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever and we the said party of the first part bind ourselves to warrant and forever defend the title to the above described premises clear of the claim of ourselves our heirs executors administrators or afsigns and that of any other person or persons whatsoever unto the Said party of the Second part in testimony whereof we the party of the first part have hereunto set our hands and affixed our Seals this day and year above written.

Know all men by these presents, that we Mary Campbell widow of the late Duncan N. Campbell deceased and William Campbell, Caroline Purvis formerly Caroline Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Harriet McRainie formerly Harriet Campbell Daniel Campbell and Daniel McRainie husband of the said Harriet Campbell heirs at Law of the said Duncan N. Campbell of the first part for and in Consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Dollars to us in hand paid the receipt of which is hereof acknowledged have this day bargained sold Conveyed & delivered unto John M. Burke of the second part all parties living & being in the County and State above written The following ascribed lot or parcel of Land being and lying in the said County of Wilcox & State above written lying in the Land District Subject for sale at Cahawba To wit, The west half of the South west quarter of Section Eleven in Township twelve of Range Seven, Containing seventy nine acres & Eight three hundredths of an acre also the North East quarter of the South west quarter of Section Eleven in township twelve of Range Seven Containing thirty nine acres and ninety one and a half hundredths of an acre Making in all One hundred & Nineteen acres and Seventy four and a half hundredths of an acre more or less to have and to hold the same to himself the said John M. Burke his heirs Executors Administrators and assigns together with all the improvements appertaining to the premises forever And we do warrant and defend to him the said Burke his heirs and assigns forever the title to the said land herein Conveyed In Testimony whereof we the parties of the first part have signed it with our own hands and seal this the day and year before written

Duncan N. Campbell, b. abt 1788, died before 1840, in Wilcox County, Alabama leaving his wife, Mary and six surviving children.

In addition to the above deed there are probate records pertaining to these families found in Marion County Mississippi. 

- Page 277 and 278:
“ALEXANDER CAMPBELL died December 12, 1848, leaving a small estate. DANIEL CAMPBELL is a brother of said deceased. Other heirs are WILLIAM CAMPBELL, CAROLINE PERVIS, HARRET McRANY, and CATHERINE MCMILLON - brothers and sisters of the deceased. They ask that letters of administration be granted to DANIEL CAMPBELL. Dated January 15, 1849."
- Page 278 and 279:
”Bond: DANIEL CAMPBELL, DANIEL McRANIE, A. J. BLACKBURN are bound for $1000. Dated August 15, 1849. CAMPBELL and McRANIE are to administer the estate of ALEXANDER CAMPBELL."

Alexander Campbell}     Daniel Campbell, administrator of the Estate of Alexander Campbell having this day filed his final account of Said administration and praying citation and publication be made according to law to To all the heirs and distributees to wit James McMillian right of his wife Catharine McMillian of the state of South Carolina, William Campbell, Caroline Purvis, Daniel McRaney in the right of his wife Harriet McRaney – state of Miss., Covington County To be and personally appear before the Probate Court of Marion County on the third Monday in September next then and there to show cause if any they can why said final account shall not be audited and allocated.

Caroline Campbell, b. 30 Jan 1810, daughter of Duncan N. Campbell and his wife Mary married George Purvis Jr.,  b. abt 1805. 

Gorge and Caroline were married about 1830. The couple had two daughters before his untimely death sometime before 20 June 1836.

Orphan Court Probate, Film 1673597, Index to Probate Minutes Book 3 pages 24, Jun 20, 1836 " Estate of G Pervis dec’d - Caroline Purvis administratrix (gave $1000 security) also ordered by court Duncan H. Campbell, Malcom McRaney & Moses McClure appraisers of the estate." (Wilcox County)

The parents of George Purvis, Jr are unknown. However, it is my opinion that he is related to the James F. and Gilbert Purvis families that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Alabama and Mississippi.

Mary Ann Purvis, wife of William Lawrence Strahan, was born 16 Feb. 1836, a daughter of George Purvis, Jr. and his wife Caroline Campbell. Mary Ann and William Lawrence were married 9 September 1852 and had 9 children; 6 sons and 3 daughters. 

Her parents, George and Caroline grew up in Chesterfield County, South Caroline. George was born in 1805 and Caroline was born in 1810. George’s parents was George Purvis, Sr. and his mother is unknown. The parents of his wife Caroline are Duncan N. Campbell and his wife Mary (Maiden name unknown.) The Purvis and Campbell families moved to Wilcox county between the birth of their oldest daughter Henrietta (26 Dec. 1833) Purvis and the younger, Mary (b. 16 Feb. 1836) Purvis. 

Mary Ann’s father George Purvis, Jr. died shortly after settling in Alabama sometime before 20 June 1836. He was 31 years old at the time of his death.

Today’s subject is the 1836 Wilcox County, AL Orphan Court Minutes.¹

In 1830, George Purvis, a single man, age 20-29 is enumerated in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. About this time George Purvis married Caroline Campbell, daughter of Duncan N. Campbell and his wife Mary. 

George and Caroline had two children both daughters. Their first born named Henrietta Purvis was born 26 December 1833 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  

By the birth of their 2nd child George and Caroline had moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Wilcox County, Alabama where their daughter Mary Ann Purvis was born on 16 February 1836. 

About 1837, Duncan and Mary moved the family from Chesterfield County, SC to Wilcox County, Alabama joining their daughter Caroline and son-in-law George Purvis. 

It is not known what happen but between 1835-1840 both George Purvis and Duncan Campbell are deceased leaving Caroline and Mary as widows. They can be found in the 1840 Census living next door to each other in Covington County, Mississippi.

Orphan Court Minutes
George Purvis died sometime before 20 June 1836. This is the first document in the orphan Court records of Wilcox County Alabama related to his demise. The document is dated 20 June 1836. George would have been approximately 31 years of age at the time of his death.

Estate of George Purvis dec’d
Upon the application of Caroline Purvis for letters of administration on the estate of her deceased husband George Purvis. It is ordered by the court that the same be granted.
Ordered by the court that Duncan H. Campbell Malcom McRaney & Moses McClure be and they are hereby appointed appointed<sic> appraisers of the Estate of George Purvis dec’d.
Ordered by the court that Caroline Purvis administratrix of the Estate of George Purvis, dec’d have leave to sell the personal property belonging to the Estate of Said deceased.
Ordered by the Court that Caroline Purvis administratrix of the Estate of George Purvis dec’d give bond and security in the sum of one thousand dollars for the due and faithful payment of which sum will  performance of the duties of administratrix of said Estate and that Duncan H. Campbell and Malcom  McRaney be accepted of as her security.
