Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #117–William L. Massey


This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

William Lawrence Massey, age 47, died intestate on 17 May 1862 in Mt. Croghan, South Carolina. he was born in 1815, a son of William Massey and Nancy Thurman.  

He married Huldah Meadows about 1829. This date is calculated based on the birth of their first born, a daughter, Mary Ann Jane Massey born 31 Jan 1830. Surviving him at his death was his widow, Huldah, and 13 children. Two children also preceded him in death.
The Courts granted Thomas P. Davis letters of Administration on the estate which consisted of two property parcels (140 and 60 acres) and personal property.

The Petition of Thomas P. Davis

Shewth that William L. Mafsey late of said district, lately died intestate, having while he lived and at the time of his death certain real estate lying and being in said district, consisting of two tracts of lands – one on the waters of Thompson containing 140 acres of land more or lefs, bounded by lands of Stephen Jackson, Mary Jackson, Wm Timmons, John Huntley, and others – the other tract on the waters of Thompson creek, containing about 60 acres more or less bounded by John Huntly, Wm. Timmons and others – and that your petitioner having taken out letters of administration on said Estate, desires that the above lands be divided or sold according to law. T. P. Davis

This letters resulted in Court action to divide the estate which his been summarized here: 3

William L. Massey died intestate in May 1862, leaving his widow, Hulda Massey and his children: Nancy intermarried with Thomas P. Davis; Allston H. Massey; Mary Ann intermarried with Phillip Rivers; Lydia intermarried with William J. Rivers; Ellen, widow [William] Isaac Hurst died after the death of Wm. L. Massey; Pleasant W. Massey; Sarah, widow of Demsy Rivers, died prior to death of Wm. L. Massey and has since remarried to Leander Sweatt; Rosa intermarried with Thomas F. Davis; Rueben Massey; Hulda (Jr) intermarried with Hugh M. Massey; and James Massey, the last three infants under the age of 21.

Surname Saturday~Massey


Rosa Caroline Massey, daughter of William Lawrence Massey and Huldah Meadows married my 2nd great Grand Uncle Thomas Franklin Davis.

Rosa Caroline was born 24 March 1845. She came from a large family of 14 siblings and was one of the younger children. She and Thomas were married about 1865, most likely just after Thomas Franklin returned from the Civil War and they would also raise a large family. 

Between 1865 and 1890 Rosa and Thomas would have 14 children; 11 of which would live to be adults. Three of their children, a daughter and a son passed away just after childbirth and one daughter lived to age 3.

The following are children of Rosa Caroline Massey and Thomas Franklin Davis:
    i. Mary Huldah Davis, born 16 Sep 1866; married James Thomas Previtte, 25 Dec 1890; died 3 Oct 1928. 
    ii. Amanda J. "Mandie" Davis, born 1867; married Joseph Thruman Hurst, abt 1885, died Bwn 1890-1900.
    iii. William Michael Davis, born 11 Apr 1867; married Martha Missouri Hammond, abt 1889; died 16 Dec 1933.
    iv. Emma Susanna Davis was born on 24 Mar 1871. She died on 13 Apr 1871.
    v. James Thomas Davis, born 1 Sep 1872; married Ida Jane Teal, 1894; died 18 Mar 1919.
    vi. John Robert Davis Sr., born 14 Aug 1874; married Mary Jane Hunt, 1901; died 2 Feb 1936.
    vii. Rebecca Frances "Fanny" Davis, born 13 Apr 1874; married Atlas Free Beacham, Dec 1894; died 29 Dec 1943.
    viii. Samuel Thomas Davis, born Feb 1878; married Bessie Mcalister; died 29 Jul 1937. 
    ix. Rose Ella Davis was born on 25 Nov 1880. She died on 25 Mar 1884 at the age of 3.
    x. Infant Davis was born about 1881. He died on 1 Mar 1882 at the age of 1.
    xi. Charlie Lester Davis, born 12 Dec 1882; married Fannie Mae Boatwright, 27 Jul 1902; died 28 Feb 1953. 
    xii. Dora A. Davis, born 20 Jun 1884; married Gilbert Randolph Vaughn, 1906; died 17 Oct 1971. 
    xiii. Nancy Elizabeth Davis, born 10 Oct 1886; married Frank Hunley Boatwright, 22 Oct 1905, died 29 Aug 1953.
    xiv. Reuben Nathan Davis, born 21 May 1890; married Effie Jane White, 1909; died 30 Mar 1948.


    Rosa Caroline Massey Davis died 27 July 1911. Three and one half years later her Husband Thomas Franklin Davis died on 14 February 1915. They are buried at Zoar Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
