It’s Family Time~The Josiah Davis Family

Josiah Davis was born in Aug 1829 a son of Isaac Jacob Davis and Sarah ‘Sally ‘ [LNU]**.  He was a farmer and is enumerated in his Father’s household in 1850 Chesterfield County Census.

On 23 August 1854, Josiah Davis married a young lady named Cassia Deas who was born in South Carolina. They were married in Union County, North Carolina. I am still searching for her parents. Josiah and Cassia had no children during their 50 years of marriage.

Josiah is still at home with his Father in 1850 Census and the couple, Josiah and Cassia, can be found in the 1860, 1880 and 1900 Censuses for Union County, North Carolina, Buford Township.

Josiah enlisted 25 June 1862 with the 48th NC Infantry for service in the Civil War. Josiah was wounded in right side shoulder at French’s Farm, VA in 1862 and was shot in the breast at Bristoe Station, VA (Oct. 14, 1863). He was also captured near Petersburg, VA, Apr. 2, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, MD, Apr. 5, 1865.  Released June 26, 1865, after taking the oath of Allegiance. Doctor’s examination found him one-half disabled.

He applied and received a pension in 1901. In 1904 after his death, his widow, Cassia, applied for and received a pension until her death in November 1905.

Cassia Deas was born on 27 Jul 1832 in South Carolina. She died on 22 Nov 1905 at the age of 73 in Buford, Union, North Carolina.

Josiah and Cassia Davis are buried in the Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery, Monroe, Union County, North Carolina.

It’s Family Time~The William Cornelius Davis Family

William Cornelius Davis was born on 3 Dec 1845, a son of Isaac Jacob Davis and his wife Sarah in Chesterfield, South Carolina. William died on 27 Aug 1916 at the age of 70 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania.

Amanda A. Mader was born on 29 Dec 1849 in Dauphin, Pennsylvania. She died on 14 May 1904 at the age of 54.

William Cornelius Davis and Amanda A. Mader were married in 1866. They had the following children:
i. James William Davis, born 11 Dec 1866, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; married Leah E. Deitz; died 16 Jul 1943, Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania.
ii. Harry S. Davis was born on 22 Mar 1869 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He died on 7 Mar 1951 at the age of 81 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania.
iii. Sarah J. Davis, born 19 Aug 1870, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; married Daniel F. Dunkle; died 22 Jun 1933, Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania.

The State of South Carolina
To all Whom these Presents shall come or be made known Or whom the same may in anywise concern, I, W. J. Hannah Clerk of Court of the County of Chesterfield in the said State, Send Greeting:  Whereas J. F. Hunley and I. J. Davis on or about the 14th day of December in the year one thousand and eight hundred and eighty eight did exhibit their complaint in the court of Common Pleas in the County of Chesterfield and State aforesaid, against Jane Teal and others for Partition of the Real Estate of John C. Davis, deceased. And the cause, being at issue before the Honorable the court aforesaid, came on to be heard on the 9th day of February one thousand and eight hundred and eighty nine when the said Court, after a full hearing thereof, and mature deliberation in the premises, Did Order, Adjudge and Desire that the lands hereinafter mentioned and described should be sold at public auction by the Clerk of Court for Chesterfield County, on the terms and for the purpose mentioned in said Directed Order, as by reference thereto, on file in the said Court, will appear: And the said Clerk after having duly advertised the said lands for sale, by public outcry, on the 7th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty nine Did then, openly and publicly, and according to the custom of auction, sell and dispose of the said lands, below described, Unto I. J. Davis for one thousand and eleven dollars he being at that price the highest bidder for the same. Now Know All Men, That I, the said W. J. Hannah Clerk of Court as aforesaid in consideration of the premises, and also inconsideration of the the sum of Two Dollars paid me by the said I. J. Davis in the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, Have granted bargained, sold and released, and by these Presents Do grant, bargain, sell and release unto unto the said I. J. Davis and his Heirs and Assigns. All that certain piece, parcel or tract of land situate lying and being in the County of Chesterfield and State aforesaid, on the South side of the North prong of Bear Creek, containing three hundred acres, more or less and bounded as follows, to wit: on the north side side by the said Bear Creek, on the east side by lands of W. B. Davis, on the South side by lands of Louis Wadsworth and others, and on the West side by by lands formally owned by Niven Smith. Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever, to the said premises belonging or in anywise appertaining, and the reversions and remainders, rents, issues and profits thereof; and also all the estate, right, title, interest, dower, possession, property, benefit, claim and demand whatsoever, both at law and in equity, of the said John C. Davis, and all of the parties to the said suit and all other persons rightfully claiming or to claim the same, or any part thereof, by from or under them, or either of them. To Have and To Hold the said premises with its hereditaments privileges and appurtenances unto the said I. J. Davis his Heirs and Assigns forever. In Witness Thereof I the said W. J. Hannah Clerk of Court as aforesaid under and by virtue of the said Decree have hereunto set my Hand and Seal at Chesterfield this 31st day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eight nine and in the one hundred and fourteenth year of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of America.

Isaac Jacob Davis, son of John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst, was born 24 February 1848 in Chesterfield, SC.
He was twice married; first to Isabella Jane Teal and after her death to Laura A. Boatwright. His family composition is as shown in the below charts.

Isaac Jacob Davis, The Elder, son of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers

Isaac Jacob Davis was the 4th born child of Thomas Davis and his wife, Nancy Rivers. Isaac was born on 18 Aug 1795 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.¹

About 1820, Isaac Jacob Davis married a young lady by the given name of Sarah. No record has been found that reveals Sarah’s surname, thus it remains unknown.  Sarah was born on 17 Aug 1796 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina ^{2 3}

A search of the internet and Ancestry Family Trees shows Sarah being listed as Sarah Simpson and Sarah Willis. There is no proof that either one of these surnames has any basis in being factual.

Isaac Jacob Davis and Sarah had the following children: ^{4 5}

    i.    Simpson Davis, born 11 Feb 1821, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 28 Aug 1889, Union County, North Carolina.
    ii.    Josiah Davis, born Aug 1829, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 8 May 1904.
    iii.    William J. Davis was born about 1833 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 
   iv.    Mary C. Davis was born about 1837 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
    v.    M. L. Davis was born about 1840.
    vi.    William Cornelius Davis, born 3 Dec 1845, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 27 Aug 1916.

This family is enumerated in Censuses from 1830-1870 for Chesterfield County, SC and Union County, NC. Census data indicates that other children were born to Isaac and Sarah but they have yet to be identified.^{6 7 8 9} 

On 24 May 1875, Sarah Davis died in Pageland, Chesterfield County, SC and was buried in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery on Dudley Road near the NC state line. Two years later, on 13 June 1877, Isaac Jacob Davis died and was buried beside his wife in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.¹⁰

Isaac Jacob Davis was born on 18 Aug 1795 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.¹ He appeared in the census in 1840-1870 Census for Union County, North Carolina.^2 3 4 He died on 13 Jun 1877 at the age of 81 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁵ Isaac was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁶

Isaac Jacob Davis and Sarah (LNU) were married about 1820.⁷ Sarah (LNU) was born on 17 Aug 1796 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.⁸ She is enumerated with Isaac Davis in the Census. ^{9 10 11} She died on 24 May 1875 at the age of 78 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹² Sarah was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹³

Isaac Jacob Davis and Sarah (LNU) had the following children:

Sunday’s Obituary – Isaac Jacob Davis

Mr. I. J. Davis, Sr., one of Chesterfield's oldest citizens, after a few days' illness, died at his home in Chesterfield early Sunday morning. Mr. Davis was a Confederate veteran. Soon after the War between the States he was married to Miss Isabelle Teal, who died in 1898. He was married the second time to Miss Laura Boatwright, who, with the following children survive him: John, Ben F., T. E., and J. W. Davis; Mesdames Eliza J. Eddins, Vick Campbell, M. S. Watson, Mary Boatwright, N. P. Watson, and C. J. Eddins. By hard work and economy Mr. Davis accumulated good property. One of the last acts of his life was to place a small monument at the grave of the Rev. Mr. Parker, the founder of Zoar Methodist Church. Mr. Davis was buried at this church, the funeral service being conducted by his pastor, the Rev. J. L. Tyler.[1]

Isaac Jacob Davis was born on 24 Feb 1848 and died 14 Oct 1917  in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was 69 years old and was buried in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.[2]  [3]

Isaac Jacob Davis and Isabella Jane Teal were married on 20 Nov 1867 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Isabella Jane Teal, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Teal and Eliza A. Davis, was born on 22 Dec 1849 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[4] [5] She died on 28 Mar 1893 at the age of 43 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina and was buried in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Isaac Jacob Davis and Isabella Jane Teal had 10 children; six (6) daughters and four (4) sons.

Isaac Jacob Davis and Laura R. Boatwright were married on 26 Dec 1894 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Laura R. Boatwright, daughter of George R. Boatwright and Lauretta Hurst, was born on 4 May 1857 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[6] [7]She died on 8 Aug 1940 at the age of 83 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Isaac Jacob Davis and Laura R. Boatwright had the following child:

                      i.   Drew L. Davis, infant, died 27 Aug 1901 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. .

I have looked extensively but I can find no evidence that Isaac Jacob Davis served in the Civil War. I do believe that with a birth date of 24 February 1848 it made young Jacob too young to serve.
