Simmons, Thomas Hintson, J B Hintson and James Hintson, heirs at Law of James Brock deceased, of the first part and William Brock of the second part Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of One hundred and twenty five dollars to them in hand paid by the party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day granted bargained sold conveyed and delivered and by these presents doth grant Bargain Sell Convey and deliver unto the said Wm Brock his heirs and assigns a certain tract of land situated in the County of Pike and State of Mississippi better known as that part of the east half of the south east Quarter of Section twenty Township one Range ten east lying west of Bogue Chitto line. To have (pg 269) and to hold the above named lands unto the said William Brock, his heirs and assigns forever, free from and against the title claim or interest of the parties of the first part their heirs or assignes as well as that of any and all persons or person whomsoever claim under them. Estate of James Brock, deceased.

James Brock was born 19 October 1822 in Chesterfield County, SC, a son of Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance [Last Named Unknown]. (please don’t copy the false name Temperance Gay from on-line trees and keep spreading this dis-information; also Benjamin does not have a middle name “James” and James does not have a middle name Gregory).   

James Brock married Martha Jane Teal about 1844 either in South Carolina or Anson County, North Carolina. His wife Martha Jane was the daughter of Isabella  McRae and William Teal. Their first born child, a son, was born in April 1845. Their 2nd born, a daughter, arrived  December 1847 in Barbour County, Alabama.

James and Martha along with her Mother, Isabella,  and siblings migrated from South Carolina to Barbour County, Alabama between April 1845 and December 1847. Between April 1845 and 1874 they would rear 14 children; 9 daughters and 5 sons.

Martha Jane (Teal) Brock died 3 July 1886. James Brock passed away on 15 May 1888. Both are buried in Pea River Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Barbour County, Alabama.

Brock respectfully represents that James Brock departed this life at his home in said County of Barbour on or about the 15th day of May 1888, leaving no last will or testament, so far as your petitioner knows or believes and that his death was known, more than fifteen days before this day, and this petitioner further shows that the said James Brock was at the time of his death an inhabitant of the said County of Barbour and died seized and possessed of real & personal property in this County and State consisting chiefly of the NW4  of NE4 & N2 of NE4 of NE4 Section 35 and S2 of SE4 and 19 acres on north side of NE4 of SE4 Section 25 all in Township 9 Range 24  the foregoing lands being set apart as the homestead of the  minor heirs of said James Brock and E 2 of NW 4 Section 36 and the SE 4 of SW 4 & NW 4 of SE 4 Section 25 all in Township 9  Range 24 and SW 4 of SW 4 Sec 2 Township 8 Range 23 and the following

The Death of James Brock, b. abt 1793

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding the death of James Brock. No known death date, tombstone, or death notice has yet to be found for his demise. On line trees shows his death to be all over the map:

• 2 Apr 1886 Henry, Georgia, USA
• 2 Apr 1886 Tylertown, Walthall, Mississippi, USA
• 19 Mar 1871 Pike, Mississippi, USA

They also show his name as James Lundy Brock. James Lundy Brock was born 8 Sept 1808; a son of Valentine Brock and Elizabeth Lundy. He died in 1886 in Henry County Georgia. James Brock b. abt 1793 died in Pike County, Mississippi. He married Mary Elizabeth “Betsy “ Purvis daughter of James Purvis abut 1819 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 

James Brock b. 1793 and James Lundy Brock b. 1808 are two distinct people and James Lundy Brock never married.

NOTE: I have not found a single document other than on-line trees that shows James Brock with a middle initial or name.

James Brock and Mary Elizabeth “Betsy “ Purvis had 11 children. Their firstborn, a daughter arrived in 1820 and was born in Alabama. By 1822, daughter Catherine was born in Mississippi. I first show James and Betsy in Pike County, Mississippi in 1822.

Elizabeth was accepted into the Church in September 1835 and James in September 1839

Sep 1835- Jane Brumfield received by experience. Received Elizabeth Brock, and she was baptized.

Sept 1839-Opened door for reception of members, received Bro. James Brock and Sister Eliza Faust.

The family grew, the children married, grandchildren were born and by 1870 James and Betsey had been married about 51 years and both in their golden years; James age 72 and Betsy age 65

1870 CENSUS: Township 1 Range 9, Pike, Mississippi; Roll: M593_745; Image: 363764; Family History Library Film: 552244, Page 122B (stamped), Line 10, Family 45, Dwelling 45, James BROCK, Farmer, age 72 [Born 1798] South Carolina, Betsy BROCK, age 65, born in SC and Catherine CARTER, age 45, laborer, born in MS.

The 1870 census was enumerated on 6 August 1870 for Pike County, Mississippi; so we know that James Brock, Husband of Betsy Purvis Brock was alive on the 6th day of August 1870.

So when did James Brock die? Our next clue is a land deed in Book 2 of Pike County, Mississippi. The deed starts on page 268 and is dated 17 June 1871. The Title of the Deed is “The Heir of James Brock to William Brock”

The 1870 Land Deed (6 August 1870) and this Pike County Land Deed (DB 2:268) dated 17 June 1871 shows that James Brock died after 6 August 1870 and before 17 June 1871.

Local research in Pike County, Mississippi may allow a researcher to narrow this date down to a precise death date but as of now, I will stick with the information, data and proof I have at hand about James Brock.

James Brock is my 1st Cousin 5 times removed.

James L. Brock, the husband of Elizabeth Purvis, passed away sometime before 17 June 1871. He was alive and well when the 1870 Census for Pike County, Mississippi was enumerated on 6 August 1870.

UPON reading the affidavit of complaint, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Clerk that Eli Brock, Nancy Miller and T. G. Miller, her husband, Angeline Miller and R. L. Miller, her husband, Isham Hinson and Thomas Hinson, defendants in the above entitled cause, are non-resident of the State of Mississippi, and reside beyond the limits thereof, respectively as follows: said Eli Brock, Nancy Miller, T. G. Miller, Angeline Miller  and R. L. Miller, in Washington parish, State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Palestine, in said parish and State; and said Isham Hinson in the parish of Livingston, in the State of Louisiana, and whom post office is at Amite City, in the parish of Tangipahoa, in the said State of Louisiana; and said Thomas Hinson in the county of Lafayette, in the State of Arkansas and who post office is at Bright Star, in the county of Hopkins, in the State of Texas; it is therefore ordered that said defendants enter their appearance herein on or before
The Third Monday, in July A. D. 1873.
at a term of said Chancery Court of Pike county, State of Mississippi, to be held at the Court House of said county of Pike, to answer, plead or demur to the complainant's bill, or the several allegations thereof will be taken for confessed as to them.

Marriage of Alexander Brock and Sallie White

James Brock and Martha Jane Teal were married about 1844 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Between 27 April 1845 and 30 December 1847, the birth of their first two children, James and Martha Jane moved their family to Barbour County, Alabama.

Their sixth child, a boy, they called Alexander L. Brock was born 21 August 1855 in Barbour County, Alabama.

On 30 December 1880, Alexander Brock married Amanda Knight, daughter of Herbert S.C. Knight and Mary Zetirow.

We next find Alex. in the 1910 Census for Barbour as a widower indicating that Amanda Knight Brock, had passed away sometime before 1910.

Next, we find Alex in May 1911 when he again marries; this time to Sallie White. Sarah was the daughter of  Henry White and Vashti Lewis.

Alexander L. Brock and Sarah “Sallie” White were married on 17 May 1911 at the home of their magistrate, J. A. Phillips.

There were no children born of either of these marriages. Alexander L. Brock died 5 March 1937 and was buried in the Pea River Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clio, Barbour County, Alabama. Sallie died 10 years later on  7 August 1947. 

Alexander L. Brock is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed. 

It's Family Time~James Brock and Martha Jane Teal

James Brock was born 19 October 1822, a son of Benjamin Brock and Temperance [LNU] of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He had six siblings; 5 brothers and a sister.

James married Martha Jane Teal, daughter of William Teal and Isabella McRae about 1844. Their firstborn child, a son, William Daniel “Squire” Brock was born 27 April 1845.

Shortly after the birth of William Daniel, James and Martha along with Martha parents migrated to Barbour County, Alabama. Their next child, a daughter, Temperance A. Brock was born 30 December 1847 in Barbour County, Alabama. Over the next 25 years, James and Martha would add 12 more children to the family making a total of 14 children born to this union; five sons and nine daughters. Three of their children died rather young but the remainder lived long productive lives.

James acquired land which he farmed until his death in 1888. His wife, Martha Jane, passed away on 3 July 1886. Not quite two years later James passed away on 15 May 1888 at the age of 65. Both are buried in the Pea River Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clio, Barbour County, Alabama.

James Brock tombstone online shows his death date as May 16, 1883. This is a misreading of the tombstone due to age. The last 8 in 1888 was misread as a three. Proof of this in a Barbour County Probate record.

         Know all men by these presents, that I, Archibald Blue of the District of Chesterfield and the State aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred Dollars to me paid by Samuel Brock  of the District of Chesterfield in the State of South Carolina have granted , bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the said Samuel Brock all that piece parcel or tract of land situate lying and being in the District  of Chesterfield and the State of South Carolina, on the waters of Westfield Creek beginning on a Black Jack X111W, on the lower line of a tract of land granted to Elizabeth Brooks and running South 23 chains to a Black Jack X111W, thence S 54 degrees W 32.50 to a Pine X111W thence N 27 degrees W with the upper line of a tract of 343 acres granted to William Brooks to a corner on said Elizabeth Brooks' tract thence with the various lines of the said Elizabeth Brooks' tract around to the beginning Black Jack containing one hundred acres more or less; it being part of two tract of land, one granted to Elizabeth Brooks, the other granted to William Brooks bearing date the seventh day of October AD 1799, it being a tract of land  conveyed to James A. This is an interesting Land Deed in that it identifies an ancestor that I was not aware of or have found a record of during my research. The oldest James A. Brock in my database was born 6 December 1829. That means that James A Brock mentioned within the Land Deed is missing from my database.
it being a tract of land conveyed to James A. Brock by James Brock by deed bearing date twenty fifth day of August AD 1830…

The James Brock mentioned is most likely James Valentine Brock, b. 13 Sep 1749.

This James A. Brock had to be born prior to 1809 to have land deeded to him in 1830.

William Daniel Brock was the son of James Brock and Martha Jane Teal. As a vey young child, he migrated with his family to Barbour County, Alabama between his birth in 1845 and his sister’s birth in December 1847 in Barbour County.  

On 8 March 1870, he married Josephine T. Brown. William and Josephine had eight children; 6 sons and 2 daughters. Their children were:  

i. Charles Jeter Brock, born 1871, Alabama; married Eula Lunsford; died 1949.
ii. James W. Brock, born Dec 1870, Barbour County, Alabama.
iii. Virginia Brock was born about 1873 in Barbour County, Alabama.
iv. Franklin Pride Brock, born 12 Jul 1876, Barbour County, Alabama; died 26 Jun 1926.
v. J. Thomas Brock was born in Jan 1880 in Barbour County, Alabama.
vi. M. G. Brock was born about Jan 1880 in Barbour County, Alabama.
vii. Arthur A. Brock, born Oct 1883, Barbour County, Alabama.
viii. Donnelly G. Brock was born in Jul 1888 in Barbour County, Alabama.
 

  William Daniel Brock is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed.

In the matter of the Petition of} Probate Court
W D Brock for the sale of} Barbour County
certain real estate for} December 21^st, 1894
partition and division}
This day came A. A. Evans, the commissioner heretofore appointed by the Judge of this court, on the 7^th day of August, 1893, to sell certain real estate which is particularly set forth and described in the decree of said court made and enlisted in the premises on the 7^th day of August 1893 and filed his report in writing and under oath showing his actions and proceedings in the premises. And the said report having been examined by the Judge of this Court and no valid objection or exceptions thereto having been filed or made: It is ordered that the same be in all things approved, ratified and confirmed. It is further ordered that said report together with the commission issued and addressed to the commissioner be recorded as a part of this decree and the said commission and report being read are as followers to- wit:
See Minutes Page 340 also Orphans record No. 27 Pages 360-361. It is further ordered that proper conveyance and title be made by the said commissioner to the said A Major and W H Pruett and W C Petty the purchaser of said real estate conveying to them all the rights, title and interest of the said owners in and to the said real estate. And said commissioner having as directed by said commission, brought unto this Court the proceeds of said sale amounting to the sum of one Thousand and forty five $1045.00 dollars after having deducted there from the cost and expenses attending the sale including his commissions which said costs, expenses and commissions amount to the sum of dollars which sum being added to the other costs of this proceeding including Judges fees and fees of guardian Ad Litem will make the sum of dollars total costs of sale which being deducted from the said proceeds of said sale will leave the sum of $984.06/100 dollars to be paid and distributed among the owners and parties in interest according to their several rights and now on motion of the said petitioner the court proceeds to make distribution and division of the last named Sum. And it appears that the said W D Brock is entitled to the sum of $89.46 being one –eleventh of said Sum. That Tempie Brown is entitled to $89.46 which is one –eleventh of said Sum: That Ella Shelby is entitled to $89.46 which is one –eleventh of said Sum: That Alex Brock is entitled to the sum of $89.46 which is one–eleventh of said Sum: That Mattie Brock is entitled to the sum of $89.46 which is one–eleventh of said Sum: That C H Brock is entitled to the sum of $89.46 which is one–eleventh of said Sum: That Lila Chambers is entitled to the sum of $89.46 which is one–eleventh of said Sum: That Sallie Knight is entitled to the sum of $89.46 which is one –eleventh of said Sum: That J P Brock is entitled to the sum of $178.92 which is two–elevenths of said Sum: That the heirs of Mrs. E. Ramage deceased namely Mattie Ramage and James Ramage are entitled to the sum of $89.46 being the remaining one –eleventh of said Sum in equal proportions. That is to say, the sum of $44.73 each. It is therefore ordered that the Sums of to which the said W D Brock, Tempie Brown, Ella Shelby, Alex Brock, Mattie Brock, C H Brock, Sallie Knight and Lila Chambers and J P Brock are respectfully entitled that each being of age be paid to them respectfully that the sums to which Mattie Ramage and James Ramage are respectfully entitled be retained by the court for the reason that the said Mattie Ramage and James Ramage who are minors have no legal guardian –said portions to which Mattie Ramage and James Ramage are entitled be retained by the court until a guardian for them shall be appointed or until they shall attain full age. It is further ordered that said application, and all other matters in writing pertaining to the proceeding be recorded.
James Brock, b. 19 Oct. 1822 in Chesterfield County, SC was the son of Benjamin and Temperance Brock. He married Martha Jane Teal in 1844. Their first born child William Daniel Brock was born 27 Apr 1845.  After his birth they migrated to Barbour County Alabama where their second born child Temperance A. Brock was born on  30 December 1847.
James Brock and Martha Jane Teal had the following children:
i. William Daniel Brock, born 27 Apr 1845, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Josephine T. Brown, 8 Mar 1870, Alabama; died 4 Jun 1926, Barbour County, Alabama.
ii. Temperance A. Brock, born 30 Dec 1847, Barbour County, Alabama; married Robert B. Brown, 8 Jan 1880, Alabama; died 1 Jun 1928, Clio,Barbour Co.,AL.
iii. Mary J. Brock, born 3 Feb 1850, Barbour County, Alabama; married James Grant, 25 Jan 1870, Alabama.
iv. Benjamin Franklin Brock, born 22 Aug 1852, Clio, Barbour, Alabama; married Mary Elizabeth McRae, 27 Feb 1879, Alabama; died 11 Mar 1927, Clio, Barbour, Alabama.

Today’s subject is a 400 acre tract of land , located in Anson County, North Carolina, being sold to James Brock.

Know all men by these presents that I Benjamin Brock of the State of South Carolina Chesterfield District for and inconsideration of the sum of fifty cents have granted, bargained sold released unto James Brock of the State and district aforesaid and by these present do grant, bargain, sell and release unto him the said James Brock a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the state of North Carolina Anson County on a branch of Westfield Creek containing four hundred acres more or less which I the sd Ben Brock purchased from Jane McIntire Ann McIntyre Duncan Nicholson and James Nicholson reference being had to the deed for a more particular description of said lands. To have and to hold unto the said James Brock his heirs Execrs, Adms and assigns to the sd bargained premises forever and I the sd Benjamin Brock for myself and my heirs exers Adms. and assigns the above named premises will forever warrant &defend. Now if I the above named Benjamin Brock my execs, Adms and assigns shall and do will & truly pay unto the sd James Brock his heirs execs adms and assigns the full & just sum of fifty dollars good and lawful money on the first day of January 1832 with lawful interest of the state of South Carolina for the same. Then this indenture to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue and lastly it is covenanted and agreed that the said Benjamin Brock shall remain in the possession of the above named premises and all the privileges thereof necessary to the enjoyment of the same and shall receive all the rents profits in the premises until default be made in the proviso herein contained. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12 day of December 1827.

The above land deed took place in December 1827 between Benjamin Brock  and James Brock. There are several Benjamin Brock’s in This area at this time. The Benjamin that initiated this deed is believed to be Benjamin Brock married to Catherine Wright. Shortly after this transaction Benjamin and Catherine left the area and as of today it is not known where they migrated.

The James Brock in this deed, the purchaser, is the James Valentine   Brock, b. 13 Sept 1749, Switzerland and died 15 Dec 1847 in a house fire in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He is the son of the original Valentine Brock and his first wife Anna Margretha Lischer.  Eli P. Brock and Squire Brock are the sons of this James Brock.

You can see that the Mississippi Probate Record for Eli P. Brock lists some of the same men named in the 1827 Anson Land Deed (DB W:147) and ALL are listed as non-residents of Mississippi.

Surname Saturday~James Brock, b. ca 1745, d. Dec. 15, 1847

Today’s posting is a request for help. From my previous postings over the past year and a half; I am sure you are well aware of the absence of records for the Chesterfield County area of South Carolina.

The Brock Surname is one of my primary surnames in my Maternal line. Just recently I found an obituary suggesting that one James Brock of  the Cheraw District of South Carolina was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. 

“…the house of Mr. James Brock, of Cheraw District, S. C. a Revolutionary soldier, aged nearly one hundred years, was consumed by fire …”

Well this is news to me and since all the Brock in Chesterfield County are related then I’m elated. So off I go to the Fold3 website www.Fold3.com 

On Fold3, I found 2 images related to James Brock of South Carolina.

The obituary for James Brock states that he perished in a fire that destroyed his home and that he was nearly one hundred years old. Census records indicates we are  talking about James Brock found in the 1800-1840 Censuses.

It’s obvious that if I am to prove that James Brock did in fact serve in the Revolutionary War the records of the National  Archives are going to need to be explored.

          This James Brock is the Father of Eli P. Brock, Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H.    Brock.

While I don’t have a single document stating this fact; this document in the estate file of Eli P. Brock, Hinds County, Mississippi provide circumstantial evidence that Eli P. Brock, Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H. Brock are related. 

Eli P. Brock went to Mississippi with his Uncle William Brock and some cousins while Benjamin Brock, Samuel W. Brock and Squire H. Brock stayed in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  

So, I have a request for each of you, my readers. I have shared all the clues I have about James Brock. Take 30 minutes and let’s unite in networking, crowdsourcing, social media or any way possible and see if  we can find records for James Brock’s service in the Revolutionary War. 

Based on my current research James Brock is my 4th Great Grandfather.

Sunday’s Obituary~James Brock

James Brock was born between 1743 and 1750. He is listed in the 1830 census for Chesterfield County, SC as age 70-80 and in 1840 as age 90-99. [1] [2]

James BROCK died in a house fire on 29 December 1847, Cheraw District, South Carolina.

He is thought to be the father of these 4 men; his wife is unknown.

Eli P. Brock, b. abt 1806

DISTRESSING CASUALTY
On the night of the 29th ult., the house of Mr. James Brock, of Cheraw District, S. C. a Revolutionary soldier, aged nearly one hundred years, was consumed by fire and horrid to relate, its owner with it.  Mr. Brock had no family living with him. Fold3 shows a James Brock served in the Fifth (5th) South Carolina Regiment
Volume 9, page 35, enlisting on September 18, 1776. [4]



DNA testing of descendants is needed to determine if the 4 men thought to be sons of James Brock are in fact brothers.

Sunday's Obituary ~ James Brock, b. 1802

The within named James Brock is supposed to be dead but left a number of heirs residing in this county whose names are as follows
Wm. Brock, James Brock, John Brock, Valentine Brock, Sarah Touchstone, Mary Garrett Felix Brock and some others whose names are unknown the above named John I suppose resides in Hinds county.

William Brock, the Father of the within named James Brock died sometime around January 1844. The earliest dated document in his Estate File is dated 22 January 1844. Many researchers have this date listed as William Brock’s death date. This is not his death date; he died sometime before this date.

I have yet to find a WILL for William so it’s believed that no Will was left; there is no mention of a WILL in the 84 pages of his estate's folder. William did leave a very young son – Richard Johnson Brock, b, 2 July 1843.

This young son and his sick Mother are why William’s Estate was probated and why we have the documents therein. Ironically, William’s young wife, Katherine Delilah Jordan Brock, died on 27 June 1846; just 2 years after losing her husband. Richard Johnson Brock was a mere 2 1/2 years old.

William’s son Moses Brock, Sr. was assigned administrator of the estate at the request of Katherine Brock, his step-mother. Moses Brock and his wife Margaret Six cared for Richard until her death.

The estate stayed active for the next sixteen years and six months (16 1/2) and on 10 June 1861, Moses Brock petitioned the court to close the estate. To do this, the Court required the concurrence of all partied to the estate. Thus we have the Court document issued to the Sheriff of Simpson County.



William and his first wife Charlotte had 9 children. One of these children – Emily were deceased prior to William’s death. Now in June 1861 this court has issued the above order for the Sheriff to notify the remaining seven (7) children of the closure of their Father estate. Here another puzzle exists; They had a son named Francis M. Brock. Is this Felix Brock?  There was no known daughter named Mary; so who is Mary Garrett and lastly why is daughter Nancy Brock Glasscock Hinson missing from the summons?

Then we have the above report from B. Martin, Sheriff -- “The within named James Brock is supposed to be dead…

Long before I found this document I knew that James Brock was dead. I had traced him up until the 1850 Census in Simpson County, Mississippi and in 1860 his wife Piety Leggett Brock was alone with three (3) of her sons and a daughter ranging in age from 10 to 23.

No tombstone has been found for James Brock and an exact date has not yet been found.
