When Did Tabitha Cook Lindsey Pass Away

Tabitha Cook was born about 1805 to Daniel Cook and Ruth Moultrie of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Her father died shortly after her birth, some say in 1812, but no actual death date has been found to prove his exact death date.

Her Mother, Ruth Moultrie Cook moved the family to Kentucky sometime around the year 1816. There at a very young age Tabitha married James Lindsey on 18 October 1819.

The James and Tabitha Lindsey household in the 1820 Census:

1820 CENSUS: Trigg, Trigg, Kentucky; NARA Roll: M33_29; Image: 16; Page: 4; Line 13; Household of James LINDSEY; 1 Male over age 45; 1 Female over age 45; 1 male age 16-25 and 1 Female age 10-15. Also 8 slaves.

I have yet to determine the exact age of both James and Tabitha Lindsey. We do know that Tabitha was James’ 2nd Wife and that he had at least one son, Sackfield Sanford Lindsey, and two daughters from the first marriage. No children have been identified from the 2nd marriage and it is believed that Tabitha Cook Lindsey died quite young.

On 7 November 1825, “James Lindsey and Eleanor his wife sold a tract of land for the good will and affection the Sd. James Lindsey bears to his son, Sackfield S. Lindsey. It is believed that Eleanor is the 3rd wife of James Lindsey. Thus, Tabitha died before this land Deed was executed on 7 Novemeber 1825.   

James Lindsey wrote his will on 3 Mar 1837 in Trigg County, Kentucky. He left everything to his wife, Eleanor, and at her death the two daughters because Sackfield had already received his share. It is not known when James died but it was after the date of this Last Will and Testament.

Tabitha Cook Lindsey is my 1st Cousin 6X Removed.

Today’s subject is the Last Will of James Lindsey, 1837.

James Lindsey WILL
In the name of Almighty God Amen. I James Lindsey of the sate of Kentucky and County of Trigg being low in health but strong in mind for which I praise Almighty God make this my last Will and Testament this third day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven. I commend my Spirit to Almighty God the giver and my body to the dust and wish to be buried in a plain Christian manner. Item 1^st I lend to my beloved (pg 144) wife Eleanor all and singular my land and Plantation. I lend her also all my stock of any kind all my working tools household and Kitchen furniture. And all my Negroes and their increase. Item 2^nd I lend to my beloved wife Jim a negro man during her life and after her death to be set Free. Item 3^rd. After my beloved wife’s death I request that all my Stock be sold together with all my household and kitchen furniture and all my working tools on a credit of twelve months. Item 4^th I request that the land be sold either at private or public sale as my Executors shall think the most advantageous. Item 5^th I will and bequeath unto my Daughter Rebecca Cates Six hundred Dollars to be paid out of the property of the estate. Item 6^th I will and bequeath unto my daughter Susan Evans Three hundred Dollars to be paid out of the property of the Estate. Item 7 All the residue of the Estate I request that it be divided equally among all my children Exception Sackfield Sanford who has received his share and I enjoin it upon him to be my sole Executor without fear or rewards. Thompson Clerk of the County Court, for the County aforesaid, do certify that the foregoing last Will and testament of James Lindsey deceased was on this day produced into our Said Trigg County Court and proved according to law by the oaths of John H. Rufsell and Samuel Worthington subscribing witnefses thereto and ordered to be recorded. Whereupon the said last Will and testament together with this certificate hath been duly admitted to record in my office.

James Lindsey married Tabitha Cook, daughter of Daniel Cook, Sr and Ruth Moultrie on 18 October 1819. Based on recent research he was much older than Tabitha Cook.

Many unsourced on-line trees show that Tabitha Cook Lindsey died in 1824 in Jefferson County, Missouri. I haven’t been able to prove this date but I did find a land deed dated 7 November 1825 between James Lindsey and his wife Elendor to  Sackfield S. Lindsey.

Also, James Lindsey‘s Will dated 3 March 1837 shows he was still married to Elendor. I have not found a marriage record for the marriage between James and Elendor. The November 1825 land deed can be viewed here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLX-KS9F-R?cat=432792 

That same Land Deed and Will names his son Sackfield Sanford Lindsey. Sackfield Sanford Lindsey was born in 1799; this indicates a previous marriage before his marriage in October 1819 to Tabitha Cook.
I have found no evidence of children born to the unions between Tabitha Cook and Elendor [LNU].

Tabitha Cook, 2nd known wife of James Lindsey, is my 1st Cousin 6 times removed.

JAMES LINDSAY to RUTHY COOK DEED

This Indenture made this 21st day of November 1825, Between James Lindsay of the County of Trig[g] and State of Kentucky of the one part and Ruthy Cook of the County of Stewart and sate of Tennessee of the other part.
Witnefsetgh that for and in consideration of the sum of two Hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the sd Ruthy Cook, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the Sd. Lindsay hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain + sell deliver in full and confirm unto the said Ruthy Cook their heirs and afsigns forever the following tract of lands situate on the South side of Cumberland River on the Sd Rivers in the said county of Trigg and in the sate of Kentucky bounded as follows to wit: beginning in woods and figures as follows July 15th 1798 Surveyed for Adam Craig 666 2/3 of land by virtue of an entry made August 6th 1784, lying on the South side of Cumberland River adjoining the upper end of Zachariah Johnson’s entry No. 100. Beginning at his upper corner on the river a hickory gum and hoopwood and marked Z (Double E back to back)  thence with said Johnson’s line West 173 poles crofsing a pond to a stake (xxxx stake) in said line thence South 11 E. 150 poles to a stake in the original line thence East 173 poles to a beech and maple near the river thence down the
same North 140- North 25 West 50 poles North 18 West 120 to the beginning containing 333 acres of land be the same more or lefs, together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining To have and to hold the land and hereby conveyed with the appurtenances unto the Sd Ruthy Cook her heirs and afsigns forever and the Sd James Lindsey for himself his heirs, executors or administrators the aforesaid tract of land and appurtenances with the said Ruthy Cook her heirs or afsigns forever. In Witnefs, whereof the Said James Lindsey hath hereunto set his hand and Seal the day and date above this 21 day of November 1825.

Trigg County, to wit: The foregoing Indenture of bargain and Sale of one
James Lindsey to Ruthy Cook was on the 17th day of April 1826 proven before me, by the oath of Nathan Futrell and on the 24 June 1826 also proven by the oath of Blunt Alsobrook both subscribing witnesses thereto, to be the act and deed, hand and seal of said Lindsey the grantor therein named, for the purposes therein, and the same was ordered to be recorded. In testimony whereof  deed Seal the same together with this certificate we truly recorded in my office. I have hereunto set my hand as clerk of the County Court for the county aforesaid.

James Lindsay was the son-in-law of Ruth Cook. He married Ruth’s daughter Tillitha Cook on 18 October 1819 in Christian County, Kentucky.

Most on-line trees show that Ruth Cook died in 1829. None are more specific than 1829 and none of them have a source for the year 1829. Thus this is a doubtful date and the death of both Ruth Moultrie and her husband, Daniel Cook, still remains a mystery. 


James Lindsay is the husband of my 1st Cousin 6 times removed.
