The Marriage of Lucy Pearl Deese

Lucy Pearl Deese, daughter of John Calvin Deese, was the only one of my grandparents that I knew. My other Grandmother and both grandfathers died before I was born in 1942.
Grandma Pearly lived until 1970 giving me many years to enjoy her company and presence in my life. She also had a sister and three half-sisters that lived a long life along with Grandma Pearly.

Grandma Pearly (Lucy Pearl Deese) married my Grandfather James Francis “Jim” Purvis abt 1910. To this union were borne 7 children of which six lived to adulthood, married, and had families of their own. Jim and Pearly’s firstborn, a daughter by the name Levina, passed away as a baby.

For many years I searched for a marriage date for my Grandparents without success. I located a Family Bible of my Great Grandparents but it contains no entry for the marriage of their son to Lucy Pearl Deese.

For many years the closest I could nail down a date of marriage was before 14 March 1908. This date is the date of the Last Will and Testament of  John Calvin Deese, father of Lucy Pearl Deese.

• Item 5, of John Calvin Deese Will, reads: 
• Item V. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Lucy Pearly Purvis, the sum of One Dollar ($1.00).

Lucy was married to Jim Purvis before John Calvin Deese wrote and signed his Last Will and testament on 14 March 1908.

I never gave up on finding a marriage date for my grandparents and that objective was rewarded when I subscribed to Newspapers.com. The 12 March 1908 edition of The Messenger and Intelligencer (Wadesboro, North Carolina); Thu, Page 1, col 6.

Morven News
Miss Pearly Dees and Mr. James Purvis were married Sunday [8 Mar 1908]. Owing to the objections to the match by the parents of the bride, they used the South Carolina Ceremony. [The Messenger and Intelligencer (Wadesboro, North Carolina)12 Mar 1908, Thu, Page 1, col 6.]

I now know they were married on 8 March 1908 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. I had no knowledge that there were objections to the marriage by Lucy's father and step-mother. 

• Owing to the objections to the match by the parents of the bride, they used the South Carolina Ceremony.

 Regardless, the marriage was a lasting one until Lucy lost her husband in February 1936. She never remarried and passed away in 1970.

It’s Family Time~Miss Cora Lee Deese

Cora Lee Deese was born 18 August 1895 in Morven, Anson County. She was the second born child of John Calvin Deese and his second wife, Sarah Frances Gathings.

John Calvin’s first wife had passed away due to complications related to childbirth leaving him with 4 small children, all girls. The baby died a year later on the same day that her mother passed away.

Cora Lee remained unmarried throughout her lifetime. When I was a young teenager Aunt Cora and Aunt Lizzie lived on the road between Lilesville and it’s intersection with Highway 145 at the Paul Digg’s Store.  We often visited with the two sitting around drinking a cold glass of ice tea before we continued home.    

Aunt Cora, age 72, died on 16 April 1968 and was buried in the Morven Cemetery. Her death left Aunt Lizzie all alone on the olde  homestead and it was about this time that she went to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Alabama.

Cora Lee Deese is my GrandMother’s paternal half-sister. To me she was Aunt Cora.

My Great grandfather John Calvin Deese was twice married and had a family of six daughters by the time he bought his first tract of land in 1903. This Land Deed is for that tract of land consisting of Seventy-seven (77) acres.

Anson County} This indenture made the 2^nd day of January 1903 between James C. Cox and wife Julia Ann Cox of the County and State aforesaid of the one part and J. C. Dees of the said County and State of the other part. Witnesseth for and in consideration of the sum of Five Hundred Dollars to us in hand paid by the said J. C. Dees the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by then the said James C. Cox & wife Julia Ann Cox do by these presents give grant bargain and sell alien and convey unto the said J. C. Dees all that certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Anson on the South side of big Jones Creek Beginning at a Black gum on Caples branch runs No. 38 degrees East 22 chains –Stake thence East 14 chains Stake on short branch North 17 ½ degrees West 26 chains Stake at Jones Creek – Thence up said creek various courses 24 chains mouth of Caple branch Thence, up said branch various courses 25 chains 38 links …. at Beginning containing Seventy-Seven (77) acres more or less.
To have and to hold the said premises with all the building improvements and appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said J. C. Dees his heirs and assigns forever and the the <sic> said James C. Cox and wife Julia Ann Cox doth bind then selves and their heirs the title to the described premises to warrant forever defend to the said J. C. Dees his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever.
In testimony whereof the said James C. Cox and Julia Ann Cox wife in token of the relinquishment of her right of dower in the said land have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and date above mentioned.

Nellie Isabelle and Henry Harrison Deese were married 1 February 1875. Nellie was my Great Grandmother's sister. Thus my Great  Grandfather, John Calvin Deese married Louvena Huneycutt, a younger sister of Nellie Isabelle Huneycutt.

Nellie and Louvena are daughters of James W. and Sarah Page Huneycutt.
 
Nellie Isabelle Huneycutt Deese is my Great Grand Aunt.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Certificate of Marriage-Louvena Huneycutt and John Calvin Deese

On 9 April 1884, a young couple by the name of John Calvin Deese, age 28 and Louvena Huneycutt, age 27 were married at the residence of J. B. Lindsey in Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina. 

Though unknown at the time of the event; this couple would ultimately turned out to be my Great Grandparents.


The marriage application shows that John Calvin was the son of Samuel and Sarah [Hill] Deese and that Louvena Huneycutt was the daughter of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth [Page] Huneycutt. The application also shows that John Calvin’s mother was deceased and that the other named parents were still living.
John Calvin and Louvena were a happy young couple with a growing family of young daughters until tragedy struck with the birth of their 4th child, given the namesake of her mother – Louvena. 

Louvena, the mother, passed away the day after the birth of daughter, Louvena, on 15 October 1889. A year and a day later on 16 October 1890, Louvena, the daughter passed away.  

John Calvin remarried and had 3 additional daughters by his second wife. He passed away on 1 April 1930 in Morven, North Carolina. 

John Calvin and Louvena Huneycutt Deese are my paternal Great Grandparents.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage Licensee, Sarah Frances Gathings and John Calvin Deese

In October 1889, John Calvin Deese lost his first wife to complications related to childbirth. This left him with 4 small daughters, ages 5 to newborn and in a very precarious situation since he was a farmer with daily chores that required attention.^{1 2} 

John Calvin needed a wife and mother for his children. That young lady turned out to be Sarah Frances Gathings, age 33, daughter of William W. Gathings and his wife Charlotte Jones. ³

John Calvin and Sarah Frances Gathings were married on 4 February 1892 in Morven, Anson County, NC. ⁴

John Calvin was 34 year of age, a son of Samuel Deese and Sarah “Sallie” Hill. Sarah Frances was 33 years of age; this was her first marriage. 

John and Sarah Frances would raise a family of 6 daughters, three from his first marriage and three from the second marriage. Both the baby and mother succumb during childbirth in 1889; the baby surviving one year and one day. 

John Calvin died on 1 April 1930. Sarah Frances lived another twenty years passing away on 5 March 1950. John Calvin and Sarah Frances are buried in the Morven Cemetery, Morven, North Carolina. ^{5 6}

THIS DEED, made this 30th day of March, A. D. 1936, by Mrs. Sallie Gathings, widow, of Richmond county and State of North Carolina of the first part, to Mrs. Pearly Purvis, widow, of Anson County and State of North Carolina pf the second part:
WITNESSTH, That Mrs. Sallie Gathings, in consideration of Twenty-five and no/100 Dollars, to her paid by party of the second part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and convey to said party of the second part, her heirs and assigns, a certain tract or parcel of land in Anson County, State of North Carolina, adjoining the lands of and others, and bounded as follows,viz:
Being Lot no. 5 of a subdivision according to a plat and survey made by James Stewart, Surveyor, April 27th, 1936, said plat being referred to for a more full and complete description.
This being a part of the tract of land conveyed to Mrs. Sallie Gathings by her children by deed dated March 23rd, 1936.
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the aforesaid tract or parcel of land, and all privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging, to the said party of the second part, her heirs and assigns, to their only use and behoof forever.
And the said party of the first part, for herself and her heirs, executors and administrators, covenant with said party of the second part, her heirs and assigns, that she is sized of said premises in fee and has right to convey in fee simple; that the same are free and clear from all encumbrances, and that she does hereby forever warrant and will forever defend the said title to the same against the claims of all persons whomsoever.

Mrs. Pearly Purvis is my Grandmother Lucy Pearl Deese Purvis, daughter of John Calvin Deese and his 1st wife, Louvena Huneycutt. Mrs. Sallie Gathings is Sarah ‘Sallie’ Katherine Pratt Gathings, daughter of Daniel Pratt and Mary J. ‘Mollie’ Braswell. Sallie was married to Thomas C. Gathings. The original deed was in possession of my grandmother at the time of her death. 

I have been told that this Deed was for a “Cemetery Plot” for the Purvis Family in the Morven Cemetery, Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.

Henry Harrison Deese is a brother of my Great Grandfather John Calvin Deese. They married Huneycutt sisters; daughters of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page. 

Harrison married Isabella Huneycutt on 1 February 1875 in Morven, Anson County, North Carolina. Nine years later in 1884 his younger brother John Calvin married Isabella's younger sister  Louvena Huneycutt.  

Harrison and Isabella had eleven children; four daughters and seven sons.  

They are both buried in the Morven Cemetery, Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.

Henry Harrison Deese is my Great Grand Uncle.  

Surname Saturday~It's Family Time~John Calvin & Sarah Frances Deese

It's Family Time After the passing of my Great Grandmother Louvena Huneycutt Deese on 16 October 1889 my Great Grandfather was left in a very awkward position.¹ As a farmer, he was used to going to the fields on a daily basis. The death of his wife Louvena left him with 4 young daughters ranging in age from 4 years to a new born baby to care for; a task usually left to the mother.

John Calvin had to get someone to tend his children not only temporarily but also on a permanent basis. 

Louvena, his youngest daughter, given her Mother’s name passed away on 16 October 1890 exactly one year and one day after her birth.²  

John Calvin needed a new bride. 

His source of care for his other three daughters on a permanent basis turned out to be Miss Sarah Frances Gathings, age 33, daughter of William Washington Gathings and Charlotte Jones. 

John Calvin Deese and Sarah Frances Gathings were married on 4 February 1892 in Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.³

John Calvin and Sarah Francis had three children; all daughters. Their first born was Winnie Elizabeth born in September 1893. 

John Calvin Deese and Sarah Frances Gathings had the following children: ^{4 5 6 7}
 
i. Winnie Elizabeth Deese, born 10 Sep 1893, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Joseph Vernon Streater, abt Sep 1920; died 18 Jun 1980, Ozark, Dale, Alabama.⁸
 
ii. Cora Lee Deese was born on 18 Aug 1895 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina. She died on 16 Apr 1968 at the age of 72 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. She was buried on 18 Apr 1968 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina.⁹
 
iii. Callie Blanche Deese, born 21 Apr 1897, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Ruben Thomas Phillips, abt 1925; died 24 Dec 1968, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.¹⁰

John Calvin was twice married; first to Louvena Huneycutt, second to Sarah Frances Gathings. John had 7 daughters and no sons from these two marriages; six of seven daughters lived to adulthood. Five of the daughters married and one remained single.
John Calvin died on 1 April 1930; his wife survived another 20 years passing away in March 1950. They are buried in the Morven Cemetery, Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.¹¹

Etta Deese Kirk Hopkins is the daughter of John Calvin Deese and Louvena Huneycutt. She was twice married; first to Emanuel Leech Kirk and second to Alsey Oscar Hopkins. Etta and Emanuel were the parents of three daughters and two sons. No children were born to the second marriage. ¹

Etta Deese Kirk Hopkins is buried in the Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Stanly County, North Carolina. The death year on the tombstone above is in error. NC Death certificate, SS Death Index and Obituary all show year of death as 1982. ^{2 3}

Wednesday’s Child~Louvena Deese

Louvena Deese lived a very short life of one year and one day. Her birth on 15 October 1889 resulted in the death of her mother, Louvena Huneycutt Deese, wife of John Calvin Deese. It also left her three sisters without a mother.

John Calvin, a farmer, was left in dire straits with a baby and 3 other daughters ages 1 through 4 years of age; my grandmother being the oldest at age 4. The two Louvena’s, Mother and daughter were buried side by side in the Cedar Creek Meeting House Cemetery, today known as Lilesvile Cemetery.

On 2 February 1892, John Calvin married Sarah Frances Gathings providing a mother for the surviving three daughters. Together they would live their lifetime together and have three additional daughters.

Cora Lee Deese is my Grand Aunt. She was born 18 August 1895 to John Calvin Deese and his 2nd wife Sarah Frances Gathings.

Aunt Cora never married. She lived her life, as I knew it, with her sister Winnie Elizabeth “Aunt Lizzie” (Deese) Streater.

From my earliest memory Aunt Lizzie and Aunt Cora, along with Aunt Lizzie daughter, Sarah Ann, lived on their farm outside of Morven, North Carolina. After we moved from Cheraw, SC in 1950 we lived within walking distance, about a mile, of Aunt Lizzie’s and Aunt Cora’s house.

Aunt Cora died 16 April 1968 (a Tuesday) at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Charlotte, North Carolina. Cause of death was listed as “Adenocarcinoma endocerous” also known cervical cancer.

She was buried the following Thursday at Morven Cemetery, Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.
 
Aunt Cora will be the focus of my “52 Ancestors” posting scheduled for Wednesday.

52 Ancestors: #29, Grandma Pearly

 

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.
From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of My blog posting today is my paternal Grandmother Lucy Pearl “Pearly” Deese Purvis



Lucy Pearl Deese was the first born child of John Calvin Deese and Louvena Huneycutt. John Calvin and Louvena were married on 9 April 1884. Lucy Pearl was born 17 January 1885, 9 months and 8 days later. She was the first of 4 children, all girls, born to John Calvin and Louvena. Louvena and the last born child, a daughter also called Louvena perished due to complications related to childbirth.

This left John Calvin, a farmer, in a major predicament. Three young daughters to raise and the demands of being a farmer. Needless to say John Calvin went looking for another wife marrying Sarah Frances Gathings on 4 February 1892. This marriage took place just a little over two years after the passing of his first wife and baby daughter on 18 October 1889.

John Calvin and Sarah Frances would also have three daughter. No sons were born to either of these unions.

John Calvin wrote his Will on 14 March 1908. Within the Will, item 5 relates to his daughter Lucy Pearl Purvis; so we know that Lucy Pearl was married prior to 14 March 1908. No marriage license has been found.

Lucy married James Francis “Jim” Purvis, son of William James Purvis and Mary Hulda Previtte. James Francis was born 7 November 1885, Together Lucy and Jim would have 7 children,  3 boys and 4 girls. Their first born, a daughter, died at birth. The remaining children lived to adulthood.  Grandpa Jim died on 21 February 1936 leaving Grandma a widower with six children to raise. Grandma would remain a widow for the next 34 years until her death on 23 April 1970.

Grandma Pearly was the only one of my grandparents that I knew as a child growing up. We saw her quite often and were delighted to be with her. She was small in statue with a big heart and was a great cook. She worked with us in the fields and cooked after a full days work. The last 10 years of her life I was away from home serving in the Air Force, only seeing her occasionally while home on leave. She was a wonderful person and continues to be missed by those who shared their lives with her here on earth.

52 Ancestors: #6, J. Calvin Deese

John Calvin Deese is my Great Grandfather. John Calvin was a son of  Samuel Deese and Sarah Hill. Three different dates have been found for John’s birth; 10 November 1852 (calculated from age given on NC Death certificate 77y, 2m, 22d and a death date of 1 Apr 1930), 10 November 1854 (Tombstone) and 11 Dec 1853 (NC Death Certificate). ^{1 2 3}

John and his brother Henry Harrison married sisters, daughters of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Page. 

Henry Harrison married Nellie Isabelle Huneycutt  and John Calvin married Louvena Huneycutt on 9 April 1884. Louvena was twenty eight years old when she married John Calvin. ⁴

John Calvin and Louvena had 4 daughters born between 1885 and 1889. These children were: Lucy Pearl, Theresa Sara, Etta M and Louvena Deese. 

The 1889 birth of Louvena on 15 October resulted in the death of both Mother and child. The Mother died the following day after the birth of her child. The Child, Louvena died 1 year later on 17 October 1890. ^{5 6} 

This left John Calvin, a farmer, with 3 small babies to care for as well as his farm.On 4 February 1892, John Calvin Deese and Sarah Frances Gathings were united into Holy Matrimony.⁷  Sarah Frances “Fannie” Gathings was 32 and John Calvin was 39. Between 1989 and 1897 John and Fannie would add three more daughters to the three from John’s first marriage. These three children were Winnie Elizabeth, Cora Lee and Callie Blanche Deese. 

Of these seven girls, six would live to adulthood; five of the six would marry and have families of their own. Cora Lee would remain unmarried her entire life. 

John Calvin wrote his Last Will and Testament on 14 March 1908. He died in April 1930. ⁸



John’s daughter Lucy Pearl is my Grandmother. This Will is the earliest document I have that indicates she was married to my Grandfather. She is named in this Will dated 14 March 1908 as Mrs. Lucy Purvis (Item V) so I know she married Grandpa sometime before 14 March 1908.
 
The NC Death Certificate for “Calvin Deere” shows that he died 2 April 1930.  Actually, he died about 11pm Tuesday night, 1 April 1930 as stated in his obituary. ^{9 10} 

Death of J. Calvin Deese.
Tuesday night at 11 o'clock Mr. J. Calvin Deese died at his home. He had been a victim of paralysis for a long time and the end was expected at any hour. The funeral was held in the Methodist church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. L. McCain, and interment was in the Morven cemetery where a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives gathered to pay the last tribute to a man who had always labored with both heart and hand to do the right thing for his Master, his country and family. Mr. Deese was 77 years of age, he had been a citizen of Morven nearly all his life. He was twice married, first to Miss Lavenia Honeycutt and to this union three children were born, and second to Miss Fannie Gathings, and to them were born three children also. He is survived by his second wife and five daughters. They are: Mrs. Baldwin, of Palestine; Mrs. Jim Purvis, of McFarlan; Mrs. Reuben Phillips and Misses Lizzie and Cora Deese of Morven.

52 Ancestors: # 2, Louvena Huneycutt Deese

Louvena Huneycutt  is my great grandmother. She was born on 1 Oct 1855 in Cabarrus Co., North Carolina.^{1 2 3 4} She  was a daughter  of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Page. She died on 16 Oct 1889 at the age of 34  and was buried at Cedar Creek Meeting House Cemetery in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.⁵

I don’t know how John Calvin Deese, my great grand father, met Louvena Huneycutt but they were married on 9 Apr 1884 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.⁶ Their eldest daughter was my grandmother and Grandma Purvis is the only one of my grandparents that was alive when I was born. Grandma Purvis lived until 1970, but as a young kid I had no interest in how her parents met each other.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could go back in time.

John Calvin Deese, son of Samuel Deese and Sarah Hill, was born on 10 Nov 1852 in Anson County, North Carolina.^{7 8 9 10 11 12} 

Between 9 April 1884 and 15 October 1889, John and Louvena had 4 children. The last born, Louvena and her Mother, Louvena Huneycutt Deese both passed away on the same day, 16 October 1889.
Their children were:

i. Lucy Pearl "Pearly" Deese, born 17 Jan 1885, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
ii. Theresa Sara "Fleeter" Deese, born 8 Feb 1887, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
iii. Etta M. Deese, born 3 Feb 1888, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
iv. Louvena Deese was born on 15 Oct 1889 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina, United States. She died on 16 Oct 1890 at the age of 1 day and was buried beside her Mother at the Cedar Creek Meeting House Cemetery in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.

After losing his young wife and baby daughter, John Calvin married  Sarah Frances Gathings, daughter of William W. and Charlotte Jones Gathings. They were married 4 February 1892 in Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.

I’m still searching for additional information about Louvena Huneycutt Deese and her short life.

John Calvin Deese is my 2nd Great Grandfather. My grandmother was one of four daughters born to John Calvin and Louvena Huneycutt Deese. Louvena and the last child Louvena perished during that childbirth and are buried at the Cedar Creek Meeting House, to the left when entering the Church.

After the death of Louvena, John Calvin married Sarah Frances Gathings, daughter of William W. Gathings and Charlotte Jones.

John Calvin and Charlotte also had three daughter; no sons were born to either of these unions.

The NC Death certificate[1] for John Calvin Deese shows he died 2 April 1930; but it’s wrong. His tombstone shows that John Calvin died on 1 April 1930. His Obituary[2] found in the 3 April (Thursday) 1930, The Messenger & Intelligence, Page 10, Morven News states:

She died on 16 Oct 1889 at the age of 32 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. She was buried at Cedar Creek Meeting House Cemetery in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. [1]

Louvena Huneycutt and John Calvin Deese were married on 9 Apr 1884 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. John Calvin Deese, son of Samuel Deese and Sarah Hill, was born on 10 Nov 1854 in Anson County, North Carolina. He signed his will on 14 Mar 1908 in Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.[2]  John Calvin died on 2 Apr 1930 at the age of 76 and was buried on 3 Apr 1930 at Morven Cemetery in Morven, Anson, North Carolina.[3] [4]

John Calvin Deese and Louvena Huneycutt had the following children:

          i.        Lucy Pearl "Pearly" Deese, born 17 Jan 1885, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married James Francis Purvis, bef 14 Mar 1908; died 23 Apr 1970, Cordova, Richmond County, North Carolina.

          ii.       Theresa Sara "Fleeter" Deese, born 8 Feb 1887, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Ruben Thomas Phillips, abt 1911; died 8 Feb 1925, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.

          iii.      Etta M. Deese, born 3 Feb 1888, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Emanual Leach Kirk, 1905 or 1909, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Alsey Oscar Hopkins; died 25 Feb 1982, Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina.

          iv.      Louvena Deese was born on 15 Oct 1889 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. She died on 16 Oct 1890 at the age of 1 in Lilesville and was buried on 17 Oct 1890 at Cedar Creek Meeting House cemetery with her Mother.

Louvena Huneycutt Deese is my great grandmother. Her baby, with her namesake, is buried beside her at Cedar Creek Cemetery. Sadly, the tombstone of my great grandmother has been damaged since I last visited the grave-site.
