Its Family Time~John M. Sellers

Its-Family-Time2
John M. Sellers was born abt 1810, a son of Phillip and Mary Sellers, Sr. He lived in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

It was here that he met Jerusha Ann Smith, daughter of  Rilah Smith and his wife Timmey Spencer.  John and Jerusha Ann, both age 20, were married in 1830.

To this union were borne the following children:

i. Rilah Sellers, born abt 1831, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Fanny Moore.
ii. Susannah Sellers, born abt May 1833, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Lewis T. Melton Jr.,

Tragically, John M. Sellers died on 23 August 1845 when he suffocated while cleaning the family well.

This left Jerusha Ann a widow with 8 children ranging in age from Infant to age fourteen. She had no choice beyond finding another man, a protector to provide for her.

Jerusha Ann Smith Sellers married the Rev. Joel Gulledge about 1856 (exact date unknown)
.
We do know from this marriage contract dated 8 December 1855 that the marriage occurred after the execution of this document.

It’s Family Time~Lewis and Susannah (Sellers) Melton

Its-Family-Time2
Susannah Sellers was born about May 1833, a daughter of  John M. Sellers and Jerusha Ann Smith.

Susannah Sellers and Lewis T. Melton Jr. were married about 1855.

Lewis T. Melton Jr., son of Lewis T. Melton, Sr. and Rebecca Lewis, was born about 1826. Lewis was last enumerated in the 1880 Census and his absence from the 1900 Census with Susannah suggests his death occurred between 1880 and 1900. No probate or tombstone has been found for Lewis T. Melton, Jr. so his exact death date is unknown.

Susannah last appeared, living alone, in the 1900 Census. It is presumed she passed away before the 1910 census enumeration.

Lewis T. Melton and Susannah Sellers had the following children:

i. Ervin M. Melton, born 12 Sep 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Sarah Jennie Streater; died 29 Mar 1930, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Ellen Melton was born about 1858. She died before 1870 at the age of 12.
iii. Rebecca Melton was born about 1859. She died before 1870 at the age of 11.
iv. Catherine T. Melton, born 5 Jun 1865, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Thomas Samuel Gregory, 1884; died 2 Aug 1915, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. Miriam Melton, born abt 1868; married John W. Gregory.
vi. L. E. Melton was born about Jan 1870. She died before 1880 at the age of 10.
vii. Edgar D. Melton was born about 1871.
viii. Braxton Bragg Melton, born 16 Feb 1875, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Susan Lela King; died 12 Jun 1941, Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.

Susannah (Sellers) Melton is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Samuel Joseph Sellers was the son of Son of John M. Sellers & Jerusha Ann Smith Sellers. Based on his age as reported in the 1880 census, age 43, he was born in 1837. Samuel J. and Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Hurst were married about 1857. This date is calculated based on the birth of their first known child, a daughter born in February 1858.

Samuel and Betty had 12 known children between 1858 and 1883. On 22 February 1886, Samuel Joseph Sellers wrote and signed his Last Will and Testament. His FindAGrave memorial (#30435663) shows his death date as unknown.

I found one document that shows his death date to be July 1887. This document, a Civil War Tombstone request, was completed 45 years after his reported death date. It may or may not be factual. I wrote about this request here:
