APPLICATION.

The State of Mississippi}
Rankin County. Sct. } This day personally Appeared before me, the undersigned Justice of the peace in and for the county and State aforesaid, Martha M. Purvis and made oath the She is the wife -----of the late Joseph Purvis deceased, who left no heir authorized to claim over her therefore She alone is entitled to claim and receive all arrearages of pay, commutation and bounty, due from the Government of the Confederate States of America to said Joseph Purvis as a private in Capt. Stafford Company B , 9 Regiment Mississippi Louisiana Volunteers under Col.
(If the arrears of pay, commutation, +c,, exceeds one hundred dollars this applicant hereby remits such excess to the Government, wishing to avoid the expense, +c, of administering on decedent’s estate.) And at the same time also appeared P. H. Overley--- a reputable and truthful witness, and made oath that the above statement is true and that he is not interested in the same.

Joseph Purvis, born about 1839 in Mississippi was the son of Joseph Purvis, Sr.  and Elizabeth Cook. About 1856 he married Martha Miranda Viney.

By 1861, when the Civil War broke out Joseph and Martha had increased their family with the addition of  three sons borne in  1857, 1859 and 1861.

Joseph delayed his entry into the War until 27 February 1862 at which time he joined Capt. Stafford’s Company ‘B’ 9th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers. Joseph served in many of the major battles during the early part of the war. He was wounded in Battle of Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and died the same day from these wounds. He was 22 years old.

Six months and twenty-one days after entering the war; the 3 boys had lost their father and Martha was a widow.

Settlement with Government.


After the death of Joseph Purvis, Martha Miranda Viney Purvis married Martin L. Boone. On 10 May 1872, they would add another son to the Family, Lee Boone. 

Martha Miranda Viney Purvis Boone died 24 April 1902 in Puckett, Rankin County, Mississippi.

Joseph and Elizabeth Purvis are selling off 40.46/100 acres of land to William H. Davis.

This indenture made and Entered into the 29^th day of August in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight by and between Joseph Purvis and his wife Elizabeth of the County of Rankin and State of Mississippi of the first part, and William H. Davis of the county of Hinds and state aforesaid of the second part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum Two thousand dollars to us in hand well and truly paid by the said party of the second part the receipt of which we do hereby acknowledge and confessed have this day granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the said party of the second part all that certain tract or parcel of land situate and lying and being in the County of Hinds and State of aforesaid and described as follows, to wit: the south half of East half of North West quarter of Section No. 10 Township No. 4 of Range No. 1 West containing 39 45/100 acres and the S ½ of NE ¼ of Section No. 9 in Township No. 4 of Range No. 1 West containing 40 69/100 acres and S ½ of W ½ of SW ¼ of Section NO. 3 in Township No. 4 Range No. 1 West containing 40 46/100 acres more or less together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and appurtenances to said premises belonging or in anywise incident or appertaining to the same to have and to hold all and singularly the premises before mentioned unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever and the said party of the first part do hereby bind his heirs Executors, Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singularly the said premises unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns against us and our heirs and against every person whomsoever Lawfully claiming or to claim the said or any part thereof witness our hands and seals the day and date above written.

Rankin County} Personally appeared before me the undersigned Justice of the Peace in and for said county Joseph Purvis who’s name is subscribed to the foregoing indenture and acknowledged that he signed sealed and delivered the same as his act and deed an d at the same time came Elizabeth Purvis his wife of the said Joseph Purvis whose name is also subscribed to the said Indenture and after being questioned separate and apart from her husband and the intention of this deed fully explained to her she acknowledged that she signed the same fully and voluntarily without any fear threat or compulsion of her said Husband as her act and deed. Joseph Purvis was the son of James Purvis, Sr. He married Elizabeth Cook abt 1823. The 1840 Census shows that Elizabeth and Joseph had a large family consisting of 4 males and 7 females. Joseph died sometime before 27 April 1842. Elizabeth Cook Purvis died after 1860.

Joseph Purvis, Selling the Farm

Joseph Purvis and Elizabeth Cook were married about 1823. I have not found a marriage record for them and this marriage year is based on the belief that their first born was Caroline or Nancy Jane Purvis born about 1823.

In the 1830 census for Rankin County the Family composition consisted of Joseph (30-39) and his wife Elizabeth (30-39)

• 1 Male under 5
• 1 Female under 5
• 2 Females 5-9
• 2 Females 10-14 (1816-1820)

By 1840 and a new census the family has increased with the addition of another daughter and three sons.

Joseph was a farmer and had a total of 160 acres with 80 acres in Section 23, Township 4, Range 5 and another 80 acres in Section 26, Township 4, Range 5.  

On 15 November 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth sold all their land to John Dunagan of Newton County, Mississippi.  A total of 160 acres more or less.

I’m convinced they took this action because they knew that Joseph was ill and his life expectancy was very short. Failure to sale the land would leave Elizabeth burden with 160 acres of farmland and six or seven children under 15 years of age.

Between 15 November 1841 and May 1842, Joseph Purvis passed away.  This timing is devised based on a statement from the estate of Gilbert Johnston Purvis.

With a household full of very young children Elizabeth Cook Purvis had no choice but to re-marry. We know that she married Richard Odom, son of Isaac Odom and his wife Millie Breland. The date of marriage and location is documented all over the Web as  22 January 1844, Smith County, Mississippi; However, this cannot be confirmed or verified as a correct date and place. [Data said to be sourced from War of 1812 Pension File]

After Richard’s death about 1854; Elizabeth move her family to Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

She died there sometime before the 1870 census were enumerated. I haven’t identified the under 5 male in the 1830 census but her last three sons, James, Joseph and William Alexander ALL died in the Civil War. I don’t know her death date so I don’t know if she was alive long enough to receive word that her 3 babies were gone.

Elizabeth suffered much grief in her lifetime.

The Land Patent and Deed below shows the sale of the Joseph Purvis land.

Rhode an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the said County Joseph Purvis whose name is subscribed to this Indenture and acknowledged that he signed Sealed and delivered the same as his act and deed and at the same time was present Elizabeth Purvis wife of thee said Joseph Purvis whose names is also subscribed to this Indenture and after being questioned separate and apart from her Said husband and the nature of the deed fully explained to her She acknowledged that She Signed Sealed and delivered the same freely and voluntarily without any fear from threats of from compulsion of her Said husband as her own lawful act and deed.

Purvis Family Migration to Alabama and Mississippi

Sometime around 1818, Gilbert Purvis and brothers James and Joseph migrated their family from Chesterfield County to Clarke County, Alabama.

It was there in 1824 that John Purvis passed away and his Estate was probated in Clarke County by one William S. Thornton.

I haven't figured out exactly where this John Purvis fits into the Gilbert, James F., Joseph Purvis family lineage but there is no doubt that he is in facts connected to these families.

This land deed was conveyed by James “his mark E Purvis” on 28 December 1817 to Haywood Todd.  This Slanted E mark is unique for this James Purvis.

This Land Deed was convey in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  Move forward 7 years to Clarke County, Alabama and the Probate of John Purvis Estate.

Now we have James “His mark E” Purvis present at the probate proceedings with this document as proof.

Spotlight on The Joseph Purvis Family

The contents of this posting is a WORKING FILE compiled by Charles L. Purvis and has been published here today to stimulate Interest and feedback on what is known about the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Cook Purvis.

The parents of Joseph Purvis migrated to Mississippi from Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Joseph is first listed in the 1824 Simpson County, Mississippi Tax rolls where he is recorded with 1 white poll and 2 slaves’ poll. He paid 75 cents in taxes. This tax list tells me that Joseph was at least 21 years of age in 1824. His reported age as shown in the 1830 and 1840 census allows us to compute his birth year to be between 1791 and 1800.
A land deed in Rankin County tells us that his wife was Elizabeth Cook, daughter of John Cook. That same deed tells us that Joseph’s Brother William Purvis married John’s daughter Millie Cook (Hinds County Deed Book 9, pp 531-532).

From the 1830 and 1840 Census we know that Joseph and Elizabeth had a large family of eleven children. We also know that one male in the household has not been identified and because the family composition has not been thoroughly documented that other errors may be contained with this article.

Joseph Purvis died in late 1841-May 1842 in either Rankin or Smith County, Mississippi.
After Joseph’s death in 1841/42 Elizabeth Cook Purvis married Richard Oldham/Odom. No children are known from this union.

The following 10 children have been tentatively identified as the Children of Joseph Purvis and Elizabeth Cook Purvis:

i. Caroline Purvis, born abt 1823, Alabama; married Rev. Thomas Jefferson Franklin, 24 Feb 1845, Rankin County, Mississippi; died 1874, Rankin County, Mississippi.
ii. Nancy Jane Purvis, born abt 1824, MS; married John Odom, abt 1843; died aft 1880.
iii. Mary Purvis, born abt 1824, MS; married Thomas W. Franklin, 6 Feb 1843, Rankin County, Mississippi.
iv. Phoebia Purvis, born abt 1825, Rankin County, Mississippi; married Richard W. Moore, 28 Dec 1844, Rankin County, Mississippi.
v. Rosanna Purvis, born abt 1826, Rankin County, Mississippi; married Edward Walters, 5 Feb 1845, Rankin County, Mississippi.
vi. Elizabeth Purvis was born about 1830.
vii. Lucy Ann Purvis was born about 1835 in Rankin County, Mississippi.
