Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.
His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.
Today’s subject is a a 1892 Land Deed between Lafayette Brown, et al to Mollie & Lizzie Brown. 1
Back in September 2012 and again in July 2013 I did articles on the children of Epps Rivers Brown and his wife Dorinda Adair in an attempt to reconstruct the family based on available data. Those posting can be viewed here.

Knowing that FamilySearch had made a commitment to digitize all their film and make it available on line; I decided to take a look at Union County, Arkansas Land Deeds. It was gratifying to find that the Deed Indexes for Union County both Grantor and Grantee had been digitized. The actual Land Deed have not yet been digitized..
My next step was to look up the Register of Deeds for Union County and send them an E-mail requesting these two deeds and the cost for such service. In two days I had the deeds I requested in hand as a PDF’s by E-mail. Much quicker then when I first started research in 1976 when letters took forever.
This deed, posted here, is one of the two deeds that I received earlier this week from the Union County Arkansas Circuit Clerk.

To} Warranty Deed
Mollie & Lizzie Brown}
Know all men by these presents that we L. Brown, N. B. Brown, W. Brown, Dora Goodwin, Sallie Ward & Nannie Glass for and in consideration of the sum of One Dollars the receipt of which we hereby acknowledged, do hereby grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Mollie & Lizzie Brown and unto their heirs and assigns forever the following lands lying in the County of Union and State of Arkansas to wit:
- N.W ¼ of NE ¼ Sec 8 T17 R14 – 40
- S1/2 of NE ¼ Sec 8 T17 R14 – 80
- SE ¼ Sec 8 T17 R14 – 160
- N ½ of NE ¼ Sec 8 T17 R14 – 80
with all the improvements thereon. To have and to hold the same unto the said Mollie & Lizzie Brown and unto their heirs and assigns forever with all appurtenance thereunto belonging and we hereby covenant with the said Mollie Brown and Lizzie Brown that we will forever warrant and defend the title to such lands against all lawful claims whatsoever.
Witness our hands and seal on this 30th day of January A D 1892.

Be it remembered that on this day came before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace within and for the County aforesaid duly commissioned and acting L. Brown, N. B. Brown, W. Brown, D. J. Goodwin and Sallie Ward to me well Known as the grantors in the foregoing Deed and stated that they had executed the same for the consideration and purposes therein mentioned and set forth.
Witness my hand and seal as such Justice of the Peace on this 30th day of January 1892.

Epps Rivers Brown and Dorinda Adair had 9 or 10 children based on the 1850-1880 Census. All their children are listed in the above Land Deed with two exceptions:
- Martha J. Brown, b. 1849; listed in 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census. No record beyond 1870.
- Lucy M. “Lou” Brown, b. 1854; listed in 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census. No record beyond 1880.
- The Children above are:
- L. Brown – Lafayette Brown
- N. B. Brown – Napoleon Bonaparte Brown
- W. Brown – Weymon Epps Brown
- D. J. Goodwin – Dora G./J. Brown Goodwin
- Sallie Ward – Sarah O. “Sallie” Brown Ward
- Mollie Brown – Mollie Brown (Mollie is not listed in any census so she may be Martha)
- Lizzie Brown – Lizzie Brown listed in 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census
In both cases, these girls may have married and I just haven’t located the proper documents. As stated above Martha and Mollie may be the same individual.
Further in the case of Mollie & Lizzie, I can find no record of either female after the date of this Land Deed and one other 1892 Land Deed.
All parties named above in the Land Deed are my 2nd Cousins 4 times removed.
