Census Sunday~John H Brown, 1850 Lauderdale County, MS

In the early 1800’s sometime around 1802 John H. Brown married Sarah Rivers, the daughter of Frederick Rivers. John and Sarah's firstborn, a son they named Frederick Epps was born 9 months later. Shortly thereafter John, Sarah and Frederick left Chesterfield County, South Carolina migrating southward into Georgia.

There their next three children were born; William Lafayette, ca 1807,  Epps Rivers, ca 1810 and John R., ca 1815. There may have been other children borne to this couple but record have not been found to substantiate this fact. 

It seem about 1815 timeframe John and Sarah decided to moved West and the next three children were born in Alabama; Martha, ca 1818, Henry Epps 22 May 1820 and Stephen, ca 1823 in Monroe County, Alabama.

Then we have Nancy born 1831 in Mississippi and James D. “Jim” born 1838 in Mississippi. 
Very few documents have been found between 1805 and 1839 on this couple thus making the documentation of their adventures very sparse.  In 1840, they are enumerated in the Population Census for Lauderdale County, Mississippi. [1]

The family composition was:
2 Males < 5 years
1 Male 5-9 years
3 Males 15-19 years
1 male 20-29 years
1 Male 60-69 years [John H. Brown]
1 Female 5-9 years
1 Female 40-49 years

That’s 8 males and 2 females.

Then in 1850 Lauderdale Mississippi we have this listing for the Family.[2]



By 1850, only two of the boys are still home and enumerated with their parents.

By 1850, all the known Children are married and only Henry Epps and James Brown remains in the household. Their son, Frederick is living in Choctaw County, Mississippi; Son, John R. has married Elizabeth Pigford and moved off to Anderson County, Texas and son, Epps Rivers has married Dorinda Adair and they are living in Union County, Arkansas in 1850.[3] [4]

Then on 4 Sep 1855, John H. Brown died in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.[5]



After John was buried, Sarah moved to Arkansas to live with her son, Epps Rivers Brown where she is enumerated in both 1860 and 1870. [6] [7]

Also, about this time, tragedy has struck their son John R, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth and the two of them have either died or been killed. The six children of John & Elizabeth can be found in their Grandparents Pigford home in Mississippi and with Epps Rivers and their paternal grandmother in the 1860 census for Arkansas.

By this time, Stephen, James D. and Henry Epps have moved from Mississippi to Arkansas joining their brother Epps Rivers.



Sarah Rivers Brown died in Berryville,Union County, Arkansas. Her reported death occurred in July 1871 according to several secondary sources; but, I haven’t been able to confirm this date. If you have any information on the death of Sarah Rivers Brown I would love to hear from you.

The Mysterious Death of William H. H. Purvis

William H. H. Purvis is a very elusive mysterious person. His parents are unknown; but, I believe I have enough circumstantial evidence linking him to James P. J. Purvis to suggest that they are brothers. The fact that William H. H. Purvis can be found in two census while James P. J. Purvis were found listed as head of Household in no census is significant. We can estimate a year of birth which in the case of William H. H. was about 1813. Therefore,  we decided that James P. J. was born in 1811. Then we have the 1829 Alabama Land Deed.found in this posting where James P. J. was a witness. If James was born in 1811 then he would have been only 18 when he witness the Alabama Land Deed.

Now we need to determine if an 18 year old could be a witness in 1839 or was James P. J. Actually born earlier that 1811.

Rankin County} This indenture made this twenty first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousands eight hundred and forty-four [1844] Witnesseth that we William H. H. Purvis and Jemima Purvis, for and in consideration of the sum of Six hundred dollars [$600] to us in hand paid_ the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge_ have this day granted bargained sold conveyed and delivered and by these presents do bargain Sell convey and deliver unto Shadrach Sutton a certain track of land that is, the E ½ SE ¼ of section number 23, Township No. 8 of Range No. 3E containing 80 19/100 acres, and the SW ¼ of SW ¼ & SE ¼ of NE ¼ of Section No. 23 Township No. 3 of Range No. 3E containing 80 19/100 acres. The whole containing one hundred and Sixty [160] acres more or less. To have and hold the said tract of land and all and Singular the tenements thereto belonging or in anywise appertaining unto the said Shadrach Sutton's heirs executors administrators and assigns forever and we do hereby forever warrant and defend all and singular the a fore mentioned premises against ourselves our heirs executors and administrators and against the claim or claims of all person whomsoever unto the said Shadrach Sutton, his heirs Executors administrators and assigns, In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hand and seal this first day of December one thousand eight hundred and forty four.

The State of Mississippi}
Rankin County} Personally appeared before me Henry Franklin a member of the Board of the Police for said County the within named William H. H. Purvis and Jemima his wife who has acknowledged that they Signed, sealed and delivered the within deed for the purposes therein witnessed. Given under my hand and Seal this twenty first day of December one thousand eight hundred and forty four.

In 1844, William H. H. Purvis sold most of his land to Shadrach Sutton as shown above.  Footnote 4 suggests that he received a patent for 320 acres of Land. on 18 October 1851. By this time he had sold all his previously owned land and was living in Polk County, Texas in 1850. I haven’t determine who received the patent land but I assume it was William B.. Harden.

On 2 May 1855 William H. H. Purvis transferred ownership of all his property to his wife Jemima Magee Purvis.

I think that William did this because he knew he was dying and I think he died in 1855 in Polk County, Texas. The Land Deed reads like a Will. 

Guardianship records in Polk County suggests that ale the minor children, three younger – Purdy Jasper, Gabrianna E. and Jemima Angelina were appointed guardian.[5]

Saturday Surname - Calvit - Six - Brock

John CALVIT was listed as age 40 – 49 in the 1830 Census for Claiborne, Mississippi[1] making his birth between 1781 and 1790.

John CALVIT  married Margaret SIX on 13 Nov 1823 in Claiborne County, Mississippi.[2]  Margaret Six, daughter of Phillip Six and Charlotte Selser, was born about 1810.

John CALVIT and Margaret SIX had the three (3) children:

i. Martha Ann CALVIT was born about 1831.

ii. Joseph Harrison CALVIT was born about 1834 in Hinds Co., Mississippi. He was also known as Joseph C. BROCK.

iii. Eliza Lucinda Calvit was born about 1827.

John CALVIT died in early 1835. Margaret was left all along with three (3) small children. It’s not unusual that on 15 February 1838, Margaret married Moses A. BROCK in Utica, Hinds County, Mississippi.[3]  Moses A. BROCK was a son of William BROCK and his wife. Although they were married a short time they had seven (7) children between 1839 and 1851.

Moses A. Brock and Margaret Six had the following children:

i. Charlotte M. Brock was born on 9 Jun 1839 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi. She died on 9 Oct 1841 at the age of 2 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi.

ii. Nancy Ann Brock was born on 23 Sep 1840 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi, United States. She died on 19 Aug 1853 at the age of 12 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi.

iii. Andrew VanBuren Brock, born 15 Jul 1842, Utica, Hinds, Mississippi; married Eliza J. Weeks, abt 1864; died 15 Apr 1877, Utica, Hinds, Mississippi.

iv. Moses A. Brock was born on 1 Apr 1844 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi. He died on 11 Jan 1885 at the age of 40 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi.

v. Margaret C. Brock was born about 1846 in Hinds County, Mississippi.

vi. Tharissa Brock was born about 1847 in Utica, Hinds, Mississippi.

vii. Aaron P. Brock was born about 1851 in Hinds County, Mississippi. He died on 27 Aug 1868 at the age of 17 in Hinds County, Mississippi.

Margaret SIX CALVIT BROCK died on 16 Mar 1860 at the age of 50 in Hinds County, Mississippi.

Moses A BROCK remarried on 13 Dec 1861 to Eliza E. BOREN. They had 2 children, Julianna and Marion BROCK.  It is not known when Moses A. BROCK, Sr. died.

What Happen to Sally Purvis?

The Last Will & Testament[1] of Gilbert Johnson Purvis left provisions for the lifetime care of his sister - Sally Purvis. (April Term, 1835). This is the only reference or source that names Sally Purvis as a sister to Gilbert Johnson Purvis thus making her a daughter of Gilbert and Efficia Howell Purvis.

We do believe Sally is one of two young females in the Gilbert Purvis Household in 1810 Census for Chesterfield District/County, SC.

About 1818 Gilbert Purvis, along with brothers John, Joseph & James Purvis, Sr. and their extended families migrated from Chesterfield County, South Carolina westward. They moved down through Georgia and settled for a time in Clarke County, Alabama. It was here that brother, John Purvis died. It was here that James Purvis' daughter Rebecca[2] married Henry
Howell on 9 November 1824. Also, her brother John P. Purvis[3] married Mary Parks on 14 December 1819.

It was in Clarke County Alabama that Gilbert Purvis[4] purchased land from William Stringer on 25 Dec 1821 and his son, Gilbert J. PURVIS[5] sold a piece of property to Grass Scruggs on 12 January 1829.

It was earlier believed that Gilbert had passed away while living here but we now know that he was on the Simpson County Mississippi Tax List for 1827. Gilbert, Sr. IS NOT listed on the 1830 Simpson County, Mississippi federal censuses. His son, Gilbert Johnson Purvis is listed as head of Household and his Mother Efficia Howell Purvis is living in his home. Gilbert Purvis died in Mississippi sometime between 1827 and 1830.

We also know that Efficia Howell Purvis died about 1833/1834 in Mississippi.

No documents have been found, other than this WILL, that names or mentioned Sally Purvis.
