The Andrew Jackson Wallace Family

A reliable source for the birth of Andrew Jackson Wallace has not been found. Family folklore places his birth to have occurred around 1812 in Chesterfield District, SC. The Chesterfield County 1810 Census contains an entry for Betsey Wallace who most likely is the Mother of Andrew.

1810 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; Page#564, Line#03 Betsey WALLACE Household, 1 Female, age 16 to 25 [Betsey]; 2 Females, age under 10; 2 Males, ages 10-15 and 1 Male, age under 10. 

The next record of Betsey is a local newspaper announcement initiated by her son Eli Wallace on 3 February 1840 -- Whereas, Eli Wallace made suit to me to grant him Letters of Administration of the Estate and Effects which were of Elizabeth Wallace. This announcement  shows that Betsey Wallace died before 3 February 1840. 

Four of these 5 children are believed to be known; but, one daughter and the husband/father are still unknown.

Based on Betsey age as reported in the 1810 Census, age 16-25; she was borne between 1785-1794.

Andrew Jackson Wallace first appears in the Chesterfield County 1840 Population Census. He is married and his age is reported to be between 20-29 making his birth to have occurred between 1811- 1820. If these numbers are correct it could be interpretative as Betsey being with Child (Andrew) when the Census were taken in her home. Note: On  25 August 1861, Andrew Jackson Wallace enlisted with Capt. Kelly's Co, Light Artillery (Chesterfield Artillery) to serve in the Civil War. He reported has age as 44 making his birth year to be 1817 instead of the 1812 date that is being passed among on-line trees. 

Clearly, very little interest was place on age and birth dates in early America and the loss of record compounds this problem.

As stated, Andrew Jackson Wallace was married in 1840 and had 2 females in his household; 1 female, age 10 –14 and 1 Female, age 15 to 19. The oldest female, age 15-19 is Mary Ann Graves wife of Andrew Jackson Wallace. Their first borne child, a son, was borne about 1841.  

In 1840, Mary Ann Graves, is also found in the household of her Mother, Mary Graves, b. 1795. She (Mary Ann) was borne about 1825 making her age to be 15 in 1840. The father of Mary Ann Graves is unknown. Andrew Jackson Wallace and Mary Ann Graves were married in 1840. Records prior to the Civil War were destroyed during that war making a record of their marriage impossible to find.

Andrew Jackson Wallace was a farmer as most men were during this era. Mary Ann was a stay at home Mom.  Andrew and Mary owned a tract of land containing 225 acres on Boggy Branch.   

The 1850 Agricultural Census describes his operation thusly: 

Wallace, Jackson, was Owner, Agent, or manager of a farm consisting of 20 improved acres, and 105 unimproved acres. The cash value of the farm was $500, and the value of farming implements and machinery was $50. The livestock consisted of 1 horse(s), 0 Ass(es) and Mule(s), 2 Milch Cow(s), 0 working Oxen, 2 other cattle; 0 Sheep, and 25 Swine, valued at $155. The farm produced 0 bushel(s) of Wheat, 0 bushel(s) Rye. 150 bushel(s) Indian Corn, 0 bushel(s) of Oats, 0 lb(s) of Rice, 0 lb(s) of Tobacco, 0 bale(s) of ginned Cotton of 400 lbs, 0 lb(s) of Wool, 7 bushel(s) of Peas and Beans, 0 bushel(s) Irish potatoes, 0 bushel(s) Sweet potatoes, 0 bushel(s) of Barley, 0 bushel(s) of Buckwheat, and 0 gallon(s) of Wine. The value of the garden produce was not recorded. Also harvested was 10 lb(s) of Butter, 0 lb(s) of Cheese, and 1 ton(s) of Hay.  

On 18 May 1889, Andrew Jackson Wallace deeded a 147-acre tract of land belonging to the heirs of William Wallace to his son, Hampton Wallace for the sum of one hundred dollars. (DB 10:85)

6 March 1872, Andrew Jackson Wallace and his two sons, David and Caleb signed an agreement with S. H. Powers and Company not to exceed one hundred and fifty dollars for the said S. H. Powers and Company to supply their need in manure, provisions and family supplies for the current year. Those provisions are to be used by Andrew Jackson and his two sons to cultivate a tract of land rented by the Jackson’s from Thomas E. Powe. (DB 3, Page 704).

Many on line trees and his FindAGrave Memorial shows Andrew dying abt 1888; but, we know from Chesterfield County Deed (DB 10:85) that Andrew Jackson Wallace died after 10 May 1889. And Thanks to a fellow genealogist we now know that he received a Civil War Pension Check on 20 April 1894 making his known DEATH DATE to be AFTER 20 April 1894.

Andrew Jackson Wallace and Mary Ann Graves had the following children:

i. Andrew Jackson Wallace Jr. was born about 1841 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina

ii. Clement Clermont Wallace was born about 1844 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.  

iii. Henrietta Kelsoe Wallace, born 7 Jul 1846, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Louis J. Gainey; died 21 Jan 1916, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

  iv. David J. Wallace was born on 10 May 1847 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

v. William Caleb Wallace was born on 11 Sep 1848 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

vi. Laura C. Wallace, born abt 1850, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Samuel John Hunter, 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 12 Dec 1929, Kershaw County, South Carolina.

vii. Hampton Henry Wallace, born 12 Sep 1853, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Sarah Anne Ross, abt 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 21 May 1927, Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

viii. John Duncan "Dock" Wallace, born 12 Oct 1854, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Phallie Jane Plyler, 1891; died 19 Mar 1915.

ix. Harriet Elizabeth Wallace, born 16 Jul 1857, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Robert Daniel Taylor, 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 4 Nov 1913, Carroll County, Mississippi.

x. William Wallace was born about 1858 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.  

Mary Ann (Graves) Wallace died at some point after the 1880 Census was enumerated. No tombstone, obituary, death notice or Family Bible documenting her death has been found. Extant newspapers have been reviewed without success. 

I have one last parting comment. The Father of Betsey Wallace's children are unknown. Her husband and Companion is unknown. One thing is for certain, All the trees on-line with Isham Wallace as her husband are all creative fiction and will not pass the Genealogical Proof Standard.   

Mary Ann (Graves) Wallace and her husband Andrew Jackson Wallace are my 3rd Great Grand Aunt and Uncle.

It’s Family Time~Ferguson Hale Smith Families

Ferguson Hale Smith was born Sept 1815, a son of Rilah Smith and Timmey Spencer. He was the third born of six children with 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

Ferguson Hale Smith was married three times. He first married at the age of 26 to Catherine Melton  daughter of Lewis T. Melton and Rebecca Lewis. Catherine was born in 1821 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Ferguson Hale Smith and Catherine Melton had the following children:
        i.    Albert M. Smith was born in 1842 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. He served in the Civil War with Capt. Coit's Company "Chesterfield Artillery" enlisting 25 August 1861. He died 11 Dec 1861 at the age of 19.
Ferguson H. Smith, his father, was paid Seventy-one dollars and thirty-six Cents ($71.36) the pay he was entitled to for those 3 months and 17 days. Payment made by Confederate States of America on April 5, 1862. No. 327, Confederate States of America, Treasury Department. Film #1447136.
         ii.    Elisha Brown Smith, born 29 Jun 1844, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Martha Jane Graves, abt 1866; died 8 Jun 1925, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Ferguson’s wife, Catherine Melton Smith, died about July 1867 leaving him was a large family to care for while still maintaining his daily farming chores.
Ferguson needed a wife and he found her in the form of the Widow of William Rivers who had died in the Civil War. The widow, Mary Ann Graves Rivers, was the daughter of Thomas J. Graves and Eliza Mollie Rivers. Mary Ann was born in 1838 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina and had one son, Thomas J. Rivers, born to the union between her and William Rivers.
Ferguson Hale Smith and Mary Ann Graves Rivers were married about 1867. This date is based on the birth of her first child to this union on 29 August 1868 and the death of Ferguson’s  1st wife Catherine about July 1867.

Ferguson Hale Smith and Mary Ann Graves had the following children:

        i.    Rev. Adolphus Bunyan Smith, born 29 Aug 1868, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jesse E. Flake, 24 Dec 1895, Anson County, North Carolina; died 7 Nov 1932, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
        ii.    Marion Augustus Smith, born 25 Nov 1870, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Annie Virginia Jones; died 18 Nov 1954, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina.

Sadly, Mary Ann Graves Rivers Smith died shortly after the birth of her son, Marion Augustus Smith, on 25 Nov 1870.

Ferguson Hale Smith then married his 3rd wife, Ann Rebecca Powell. Ann, age 24, was born 8 Jan. 1847, a daughter of Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright.

Ferguson Hale Smith and Ann Rebecca Powell had the following children:

    i.    Arthur P. Smith, born 29 Sep 1872, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina,; married Susie Coker, 1900; died 23 Apr 1947, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.
     ii.    Etna Florence Smith, born 16 Aug 1877, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Carl Gerome Morgan; died 7 Apr 1937, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
     iii.    Nettie M. Smith was born in Dec 1879 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina She died 28 April 1967, Florence, Florence, South Carolina.
     iv.    Mamie Clara Smith, born 4 Feb 1882, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jesse Lee Jenkins; died 1 Jan 1975, Pageland, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
     v.    Annie Garfield Smith was born on 11 Dec 1884 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina She died on 24 Nov 1946 at the age of 61 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Buried at Hopewell, never married.

Ferguson Hale Smith was a farmer and raised 17 children with 3 wives and one step-child.

Mary Ann Graves Rivers Smith, the second wife of Ferguson Hale Smith, is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Know all men by these presents, that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County of Chesterfield in the State of South Carolina in consideration of the sum of two hundred and ten dollars to me paid by my Uncles Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers of the county and state last aforesaid the receipt whereby is hereby acknowledged has granted, bargained, Sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, release and forever quit claim unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers all my right title claim and interest of into and out of the real and personal Estate of the said Eliza Rivers in pofsession or expectancy in law and in Equity or by any means whatever Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments or appurtenances to the said lands belonging or in any wise incident or pertaining and with full power and authority to collect and receive the said personally. To have and to hold all and singular the said premises unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers their heirs and assigns and the survivor or survivors of them and the heirs and assigns of such survivor or survivors forever. And I hereby warrant and forever defend the interest herein conveyed unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers their heirs, executors administrators and assigns and the survivor of survivors of them and the heirs executors administrators and assigns of such survivor or survivors from and against myself my heirs executors administrators and all other persons claiming by through or under me. Orign’l Dlv’d to Frederick Rivers

Thomas J. Rivers was the son of William Rivers and Mary Ann Graves. William Rivers died in the Civil War. After Mary Ann was notified of his death she married Ferguson Hale Smith between 1864-1867 in Chesterfield. 

Ferguson Hale and Mary Ann had two sons. Mary Ann died about November 1870 and her widow husband married Ann Rebecca Powell about 1871.

Thomas is listed twice in the 1870 Chesterfield Censuses; one as T. J. Graves and another time as T. W. Graves.  

Thomas J. Rivers is my 2nd Cousin 3 times removed.

Mystery Monday~Thomas J. Rivers~Land Deed Proves Lineage

For many years I have had two entries in my database for two men known as William Rivers.

The first entry showed that John B. Rivers and his wife Eliza Rivers (Same Surname) oldest son was William Rivers born 1835.

The second entry was for William Rivers, b. 1831, died 15 July 1864 in Battle leaving behind a wife, Mary Ann Graves and a son, Thomas born May 1860.

The below land Deed makes it’s evident that William Rivers son of John B. Rivers is the same William Rivers that married Mary Ann Graves and had a son names Thomas J. Rivers.

When her husband William Rivers failed to return from the war, Mary Ann Graves Rivers married Ferguson Hale Smith who raised her young son Thomas Rivers.

Thomas Rivers can be found in 1860 with his Father and Mother and in 1870 in the Household of Ferguson Hale Smith, his step father where he is listed as T. J. Graves.

What happen to Thomas J. Rivers, aka Thomas J. Graves after 1870 was unknown until the below Land Deed (Chesterfield County DB 5, 798-799)was found  this past week.

         Know all men by these presents, that I Thomas J. Rivers of the County and State aforesaid being entitled to an undivided interest in the real and personal estate of my deceased Grandmother Eliza Rivers late of the County of Chesterfield in the State of South Carolina in consideration of the sum of two hundred and ten dollars to me paid by my Uncles Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers of the county and state last aforesaid the receipt whereby is hereby acknowledged has granted, bargained, Sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, release and forever quit claim unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers all my right title claim and interest of into and out of the real and personal Estate of the said Eliza Rivers in pofsession or expectancy in law and in Equity or by any means whatever Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments or appurtenances to the said lands belonging or in any wise incident or pertaining and with full power and authority to collect and receive the said personally. To have and to hold all and singular the said premises unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers their heirs and assigns and the survivor or survivors of them and the heirs and assigns of such survivor or survivors forever. And I hereby warrant and forever defend the interest herein conveyed unto the said Frederick Rivers, Alfred Rivers and D. W. Rivers their heirs, executors administrators and assigns and the survivor of survivors of them and the heirs executors administrators and assigns of such survivor or survivors from and against myself my heirs executors administrators and all other persons claiming by through or under me. Witness my hand and seal this 2nd day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty one in the one hundred and fourth year of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of America.

Still, a quick on line search of the Census found no Thomas J. Rivers in Grayson County even though the land deed above places him there at that time.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #585~Ferguson Hale Smith

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Ferguson Hale Smith.¹

This estate folder begins at image #706 and ends with image #735. (images 706-735)

On 14 January 1902, Ferguson Hale Smith died leaving surviving him his 3rd wife Ann Rebecca Powell and six children conceived with Ann Rebecca. Also surviving were 6 of 10 children conceived with his first wife Catherine Melton and 2 children conceived with his 2nd wife Mary Ann Graves.
Sadly, one month and 10 days after the passing of Ferguson Hale Smith his widow Ann Rebecca Powell Smith passed away on 24 February 1902. 

Ferguson left a small estate and on 27 January 1902, C. C. Griggs petitioned and made suit to the Court for Letters of Administration on the estate.

County of Chesterfield}
The petition of C. C. Griggs respectfully shows to to this court_
First That F. H. Smith a citizen of Chesterfield County – died intestate on or about the 13^th or 14^th of Jan 1902 leaving a personal estate amounting to about Three Hundred dollars and it is necessary that others should be an administrator in order to settle the estate – wherefore your petitioner prays that Letters be granted him - and he will ever pray &C.
