On 2 July 1884, my 2nd Great Grandfather William A. Purvis and his wife Sarah Jane (Graves) Purvis signed such a lien/mortgage with a local firm known by the name of Thompson and Moore.
In the below Trust Deed, William and Sarah mortgaged - One tract or parcel of land situate in the county of Anson, State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of W. J. McLendon on the north, J. D. Rhine on the east and W. J. Purvis on the South and West containing fifty acres more or less
To obtain $70.00 dollars at a rate of 8 percent annum in order to plant a new crop daring the next planting seasons.
the said W. A Purvis and wife Sarah J. Purvis have bargained and sold and by these present do bargain, sell, assign and convey to the said Thompson & Moore partners, their heirs and assigns the following property to wit: One tract or parcel of land situate in the county of Anson, State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of W. J. McLendon on the north, J. D. Rhine on the east and W. J. Purvis on the South and West containing fifty acres more or less, to have and to hold the above-described property with all the privileges and appurtenance thereunto belonging to them the said Thompson & Moore partners their heirs and assigns forever

This indenture made and entered into this the 2nd day of July AD. 1884 by and between W. A. Purvis and Sarah Purvis his wife of Anson County, state of North Carolina parties of the first part and N. J. Thompson & C. C. Moore partners under the style and name of Thompson & Moore of Anson County and State of North Carolina parties of the second part witnesseth that whereas the said W.A. Purvis is justly indebted to the said N. J. Thompson and C. C. Moore partners in the sum of seventy ($70.00) dollars as will more fully appear by reference to one note under seal bearing even date with this indenture and due and payable as follows: That is to say the note is due and payable on the 1st day of October 1884 with interest after maturity at the rate of 8 per cent annum and whereas the said W.A Purvis and wife Sarah J. Purvis are honestly desirous of securing the payment of said bond according to its terms and it has been agreed that the payment of said debt shall be secured by the conveyance of the property herein described: now therefore in consideration of the promises and the further consideration of one dollar to them paid by the said Thompson & Moore partners the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged the said W. A Purvis and wife Sarah J. Purvis have bargained and sold and by these present do bargain, sell, assign and convey to the said Thompson & Moore partners, their heirs and assigns the following property to wit: One tract or parcel of land situate in the county of Anson, State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of W. J. McLendon on the north, J. D. Rhine on the east and W. J. Purvis on the South and West containing fifty acres more or less, to have and to hold the above described property with all the privileges and appurtenance thereunto belonging to them the said Thompson & Moore partners their heirs and assigns forever in special trust and confidence however that is to say if the said W. A Purvis shall fail or neglect to pay said note and the interest due thereon when the same shall have become due then it shall be lawful for the said Thompson & Moore, partners, or either of them and they are hereby authorized and empowered to sell said land by public auction to the highest bidder for cash at the court house door in Wadesboro after having advertised the same for thirty days next preceding the day of sale by posting notice thereof at the door of the Court House in Wadesboro and four other public places in Anson County and having previously given the parties of the first part three months' notice in writing of their intention to so advertise and sell said property and to execute title to the purchaser or purchasers and the proceeds of such sale they shall apply to the payment of said bond with all interest accrued thereon and all necessary expenses incurred in executing the trust therein specified and the surplus if any remain they shall pay to the said W. A Purvis or to his order. In witness whereof the said W.A Purvis and wife Sarah J. Purvis have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and date first above written.

Anson County} I, D. C. Harden, a Justice of the Peace for Anson County do hereby certify that W.A Purvis and Sarah J. Purvis his wife personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the due execution of the foregoing Deed of Trust and the said Sarah 1. Purvis being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband touching her voluntarily execution thereof doth state on such her private examination that she had executed the same freely and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband or any other person and that she doth state voluntarily assent thereto. Witness my hand and private seal this the 2nd day of July 1884.
