Mystery Friday~The Marriage of Mary A. C. Huneycutt

Mary A. C. Huneycutt was born in 1855 a daughter of Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Miriam “Mary Ann” Huneycutt. Both husband and wife shared the surname “Huneycutt”.

Mary A. C. was married on 14 December 1872 to John R. Rigler. She was 17 and he was 34 years of age.

No record of Mary A. C. Huneycutt had been found after her marriage on 14 December 1872 and it is believed based on indirect evidence that she died before 1880 and most likely during childbirth of her firstborn.

On 14 October 1874 a daughter,  Sarah Elizabeth Rigler was born to Mary Huneycutt and John Robinson Rigler.

We know that John Robinson Rigler remarried on 13 October 1880 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC to Mollie E. Bennett.

Tobias A. Huneycutt, son of John Wylie and Elizabeth Love Huneycutt died on 5 August 1930 from chronic Myocarditis. He was 77 years of age and left surviving him a wife and children. ^{2 3}

He married Joannah Douglas, age 18 on 29 October 1876 in Anson County, North Carolina.
 
Tobias A. Huneycutt is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage of Tobias A. Huneycutt and Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Huneycutt

There is much confusion around who my 2nd Great Grand Uncle Tobias A. Huneycutt married. Some say he married:
Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Hunnycutt
other say
Esther Clementine Weant
and still others say he married both women.

First, there are two (2) Tobias Huneycutt both born about the same time. 
 
Tobias #1

My 2nd Great Grand Uncle was Tobias A. Huneycutt, son of Marcus Honeycut and Charity Dry.
Tobias A, Huneycutt was married in November 1852 to Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Hunnycutt, daughter of Andrew Jackson Hunneycutt and Mary Ann ‘Polly’ Crayton. They were married in Stanly County, North Carolina. ¹
 


In 1850, Tobias A. Hunnycutt was unmarried and living with his parents in Stanly County. I have found no evidence that this Tobias served in the Civil War. ²

After the War he moved his family to Mecklenburg County and can be found in the 1870 census for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Tobias A. and Elizabeth had 7 children; 2 sons and 5 daughters. ³

Tobias #2

The second Tobias Honeycutt, served and died for his country. He was born about 1825-1827 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He married in Rowan County on 15 Mat 1848 Esther Clementine Weant, b. abt 1830. ⁶








The parents of this Tobias Honeycutt are not known.

He enlisted into the Civil War, serving at Salisbury Prison where he died. Tobias and Esther had 5 children; 4 daughters and a son. ⁷

Reported present in May-June 1864.Hospitalized at Salisbury.
Died in hospital in Salisbury on August 23, 1864, of “remit[tent}fever.” NC Troops 1961-1865, A Roster, Vol 19, page 251

Esther was still living in 1880 and died sometime after 1880 and before 1900. ⁸

James F. Moody being sworn doth say: That Elizabeth M. Honeycutt late of said County is dead having first made and published his<sic> last Will and Testament and that James F. Moody is the Executor named therein. Further, that the property of said Elizabeth M. Honeycutt consisting of  Real and Personal property is worth about $1000- so far as can be ascertained at the date of this application and that Sarah Elizabeth Rigler Minnie Louiza Rigler Charles Edward Rigler Susan Frances Sarah Aldi Tobetha Leonora Honeycutt are the parties Entitled under said will to the said property.

I, Elizabeth M. Hunneycutt of the aforesaid County and state being of sound mind and considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament.
First. My executor hereinafter named shall give my body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my friends and relatives and pay all funeral expenses together with all my just debts out of the first moneys which may come into his hands belonging to my estate.
Second. I give and devise to my beloved grandchildren (the children of my deceased daughter Mary A. C. Rigler) viz Sarah Elizabeth Rigler, Minnie Louiza Rigler and Charles Edward Rigler the house and lot jrouting (?) 45 feet an “C” Street adjoining the lot of John Schenck and running back to the line of James F. Moody and should either of my aforesaid grand-children die without bodily heirs or before the age of twenty one years then its or their intent shall revert to the surviving ones or their bodily heirs but should the aforesaid grandchildren all die without bodily heirs then this property shall revert and belong equally to my children and their lawful heirs.
Third. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughters Sarah Frances Giribaldi and Tobitha Lenora Hunneycutt the house and lot on which I reside the corner of First and “C” Street and running with “C” Street to the lot bequeathed to the Rigler grandchildren aforesaid thence with their line to Jas. F. Moody line thence to First Street and with it to the beginning but should either of my aforesaid daughters marry then she shall only inherit one sixth part of this lot and should Tobitha Lenora die without bodies heirs her interest shall revert to my remaining now living five children and their lawful heirs and should my daughters Susan

Frances Garibaldi die before marriage her living children shall only inherit one sixth part of this lot.
Fourth. I will and bequeath  to my beloved daughter Tobitha Lenora Honeycutt all of my household and kitchen furniture and personal property left after paying my just and honest debts.
Fifth. I hereby constitute and appoint my trusty friend James F. Moody my lawful Executor to all intent and purposes to Execute this my Last Will and testament and  every part and clause thereof herby <sic>revoking and declaring utterly void all other Wills and testaments by me heretofore made, In witnefs I the said Elizabeth M. Hunneycutt do hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of May 1885.

Moody the Executor therein mentioned and the due execution thereof by the said Elizabeth M. Honeycutt by the oath and examination of D. G. Maxwell and J. S. Robinson the subscribing witnefs thereto who being duly sworn doth depose and say and each for himself deposeth and saith that he is subscribing witnefs to the paper writing now shown him and purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth M. Honeycutt  that the said Elizabeth M. Honeycutt in the presence of the this deponent subscribed her name with a mark at the end of said paper – writing   which is now shown as aforesaid and which beards date of the 7 day of May 1885. And the deponent further saith That the said Elizabeth M. Honeycutt the testatrix aforesaid did at the time of subscribing her name as aforesaid declare the said paper writing so subscribed by her and Exhibited to be her Last Will and

Testament and this deponent did thereupon subscribe his name at the end of said Will as an attesting witnefs thereto and at the request and in the presence of the said Testatrix. Elizabeth Mariam Huneycutt was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Huneycutt and his wife Mary Ann Crayton. Elizabeth Miriam married Tobias A. Huneycutt on 7 November 1852 in Stanly County, North Carolina. Tobias A. was a son of  Marcus ‘Mark’ I. Huneycutt and Charity Dry.
Note: Do not mix this Tobias Huneycutt up with the Tobias Huneycutt that married Esther Clementine Weant on 15 march 1848.in Rowan County. That Tobias Huneycutt died in the Civil War.
 
Tobias A. Huneycutt is my second Great Grand Uncle thus his wife is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt. She is also my 2nd Cousin 3 times removed.

Emanuel Harrison Huneycutt was born on 3 Oct 1874, a son of Ephraim Alexander Huneycutt and Laura F. Deese. 
 
Emanuel Harrison Huneycutt and Bettie C. Huneycutt were married on 21 Oct 1903 in Anson County, North Carolina.
 
Bettie C. Huneycutt, a daughter of Tobias A. Huneycutt and Joannah S. Douglas, was born on 8 May 1884 in Anson County, North Carolina.
 
Emanuel Harrison Huneycutt and Bettie C. Huneycutt had the following children:
i. Myrtle Huneycutt was born in 1905.
ii. Bernice Huneycutt was born in 1907.
iii. Lillie May Huneycutt was born in 1912.
iv. William H. Huneycutt was born in 1915.
v. John Huneycutt was born in 1918.

Emanuel H. Huneycutt died on 15 Apr 1945 at the age of 70 in Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.

Bettie C. Huneycutt died on 22 Jan 1958 at the age of 73 in Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina

Emanuel and Bettie are buried in Seago Cemetery, Wadesboro, Anson County, NC.

Mystery Monday~Did Tobias A. Honeycutt Die in the Civil War?

 
Tobias A. Huneycutt is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle. He is the second born son of Marcus I. Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry.
 
Tobias A. Huneycutt was born about 1824 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He is first listed by name as a child of Marcus and Charity in 1850 census for Stanly County. His age is listed as 23 years.¹

On November 7, 1852 Tobias A. Huneycutt married Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Huneycutt. Elizabeth Mariam ‘Mary Ann’ Huneycutt, was born Nov. 16, 1832, a daughter of Andrew Jackson Huneycutt and Mary Ann Crayton.²
 
At census time in 1860, Tobias and Mary Ann family had grown to seven, with five children ranging in age from infant to seven years of age. He had moved the family from Stanly County to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The census shows his occupation as “Watchman at Depot” and the value of his personal estate at $150.00; not bad for a young and growing family.³
 
Then in January 1861, shots fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina started what was to be known as “The War of Succession”; better known as the Civil War.

For three years, Tobias managed to elude the war; staying at home caring for his family. Two new additions were added in these three years; both daughters. 

On 1 January 1864 , Tobias enlisted for the war, with Capt. E. D. Snead’s Co. Battalion Prison Guard Infantry.^{4 5}
 
His muster roll for July – August 1864, (posted below) shows in the remarks column that Tobias “Died Aug. 15th, 64”.⁶
 

Consulting the NC encyclopedia of data for North Carolina civil war veterans – “NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS: 1861-1865” we find the following entry in Volume 19, page 251:⁷
 

HONEYCUTT, TOBIAS, Private
                Enlisted at Salisbury at age 40, January 1, 1864, for the war.
Reported present in May-June 1864. Hospitalized at Salisbury.
Died in hospital in Salisbury on August 23, 1864, of “remit[tent}
fever.”
 
So now we have two sources with two different dates for the death of Tobias Honeycutt during the Civil War. 
 

1870, Mecklenburg Co., NC

With the expectations of finding Tobias’s widow – Elizabeth “Mary Ann” Huneycutt and the five children I was surprised to find this 1870 census entry. 
 

Didn’t we just say the Tobias died in Aug 1864 at Salisbury, NC? So how is it that here in 1870, he is back from the war and living with his family. 
 
Two documents suggests that Tobias Huneycutt died in August 1864 at Salisbury, NC.
· July-August Civil war Muster Roll
· NC Troops: 1861-1865

Analysis of the entry for Tobias in the 1870 Census also supports the facts that he was alive in 1870.
· Tobias, age 40 on the muster roll in Aug 1864 would be 46 in 1870 when the Census were enumerated.
· Tobias was married to Elizabeth in 1860 and 1870.

Except for no change in Elizabeth age; all evidence point to Tobias being alive and surviving the Civil War.

So, Let me hear from you my readers;

• Did Tobias Honeycutt die in August 1864?
• or
• Did he survive the Civil War and pass away sometime between 1870 and 1880?

UPDATE:
After writing this post I have found that there are two Tobias Honeycutt's. Tobias A., son of Marcus and Charity, did not served in the Civil War and did not die at Salisbury.

This indenture made on the 18^th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & forty nine between Mark Huneycutt of the county of Stanly and state of North Carolina of the first part & Tobias A. Huneycutt of the county and state aforesaid of the second part and Mathias Furr of the county & state aforesaid of the third part Witnefseth that whereas the said Mark Huneycutt is justly indebted to the said Mathias Furr in the sum of Twenty dollars due by note and whereas the said Mark Huneycutt is honestly desirous to secure the payment of the said debt. Now therefore this indenture witnefseth that for and in consideration of the premises together with the further consideration of one dollar to the said Mark Huneycutt in hand paid by the said Tobias A. Huneycutt the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Mark Huneycutt hath bargained granted & sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Tobias A. Huneycutt a certain parcel or tract of land lying and being in the county & state aforesaid on the waters of Stoney Run Creek containing about one hundred acres adjoining the lands of Leonard Tucker and others and more fully described in a grant to Mark Huneycutt bearing date the 28^th day of Sep 1848 to have and to hold the said lands & tenements and the appurtenances there unto belonging or in anywise appertaining to him the said Tobias A. Huneycutt his heirs and afsigns in fee simple forever … and discharged of any and all encumbrances whatsoever in special trust and confidence Witnefseth that the said Tobias A. Huneycutt shall and will hold keep use and apply the same to use and intent following and no other that is to say if the aforesaid debts and every part thereof shall not be fully paid off and satisfied on or before the 1^st day of January A. D. 1850 then and in that case it shall be lawful and shall be the duty of the said Tobias A. Huneycutt being thereunto required by the said Mathias Furr having first advertised the same at the Court house in Albemarle and three other public [places] within the county of Stanly for the space of twenty days to proceed to sell the said land and premises at public to the heist <sis> bider <sic> and convey the same by proper assurances to the purchaser and out of the money arising from said sale to retain all necessary expenses of his trust or such part thereof as shall remain unpaid at the time of said sale and the over plus if any he the said Tobias A. Huneycutt shall well and truly return to the said Mark Huneycutt his executors and administrators In testimony whereof we have here unto set out hands and affixed our seals the year and date just above written.

On Sept.. 28, 1848, the State of North Carolina provided Mark Huneycutt with a Land Grant (#151) of 100 acres on Stoney Run Creek.² Now on the 18th of April 1849 Mark is selling this land (100 acres) to his oldest son (Tobias) to clear up a $20.00 dollar debt to Mathias Furr.
