It’s Family Time~The Abington B. Parsons Family

Before we discuss the Abington B. Parsons family I would like to cover some background information on his parents.

Abington Parsons, the elder, was born about 1784 and died 13 April 1826. His widow, Mary, and 6 children survived. All are named within this Chesterfield County, SC Equity suit.

Many on-line trees show his widow Mary living into the 1860 but I believed that Mary passed away about January 1845 based on this SHERIFF'S SALES notice in the Cheraw Gazette, 28 January 1845.

1 Negro Woman named Fanny and child Sam, 1 Yoke of Oxen, 5 Head of Cattle, 10 Head of Hogs, 1 Clock, 1 Shot Gun, articles of Household and Kitchen Furniture, Farming Utensils, 1 Cart, &c.; levied on as the property of Mary Parsons at the suit of W. H. Ratliff and others vs. Mary Parsons.

Abington and Mary had 2 sons and 4 daughters. After their death most of the daughters stayed in Chesterfield County; but, the 2 sons, Raymond and Thomas, along with William Eddins Sellers and his wife Elizabeth Parsons and Noah Sellers and wife Timney Parsons migrated to Tennessee. Raymond is listed in the 1850 Carroll County, TN; Thomas is listed in the 1850 Madison County, TN. Noah Sellers and Timney Parsons are in 1850 Carroll Conty, TN and William Eddins Sellers and wife Elizabeth Parsons are listed in the 1850 Madison County, TN Censuses. Family folklore says William Eddins Sellers died there in 1854 after falling from the rafters of a new church he was helping to build and Great-Great Grandma Elizabeth (Parsons) Sellers packed up the children and returned to Chesterfield County, SC where she can be found in the 1860 Censuses as a 36 year old widow.   

Raymond Parson, 1850 Census, Carroll County, TN

Raymond Parson and his family has not been found in the 1860 Censuses; but, in 1870 we find his wife and children in the household of his eldest son, Abington B. Parsons in Texas.  

In this 1870 Census we have:

Ann PARSONS, age 40, Mother, born in SC (Listed as Alice in 1850 Census)

Arrington [Abington] PARSONS, Son, age 24

Joseph CANTRELL [Actual CANTWELL], Son-in-Law, age 19

Mary Jane CANTWELL, Daughter, age 18

Henry TAYLOR, Son-in-Law, age 25

Juliana TAYLOR, Daughter, age 17

Floyd PARSONS, Son, age 10, born in AR [This son was not in the 1850 Census; but, there was a son Thomas L. listed in that TN Census.]

It is not known what happen to Raymond Parsons after the 1850 Census. His widow Ann/Alice died after 1870 in McLennan County, Texas. No record of Thomas L. had been found. None of the family have been located in the 1860 Census for any states to my knowledge. 

Abington B. Parsons was born on 11 Feb 1846 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Abington B. Parsons and Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell were married about 1870 in McLennan County, Texas. Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell, daughter of James Cantwell and Sarah Anna Johnson, was born on 29 Jan 1857 in Madison County, Arkansas.

Abington B. Parsons and Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell had the following children:

i. William Albert Parsons, born 11 Jan 1874; married Maggie Lee Buchanan; died 15 May 1963.

ii. James R. Parsons, born 17 Jul 1876; married Bessie Anna Cantwell; died 6 Apr 1960.

iii. Robert Dean Parsons, born 1 Jul 1881, Milford, Ellis, Texas; married Tascher Carr, 27 Mar 1902; died 9 Dec 1945, Arizona.

iv. Lillie Bailey Parsons, born 28 Nov 1883, Ft Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas; married James B. Jones, 27 May 1900, Ellis County, Texas; died 16 Aug 1979.

v. Eva Myrtle Parsons was born on 8 Apr 1886 in Texas. She died on 17 Sep 1888 at the age of 2 in Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas

vi. Bertie Ann Parsons, born 19 Jan 1889; married Joseph Fletcher Knouse, 18 Dec 1905, Pierce, Nebraska; died 11 Jan 1982.

vii. Oaksey Abington Parsons, born 20 Nov 1891, Texas; married Ida C.; died 7 Apr 1962, Oklahoma.

viii. Aerie E. "Amos" Parsons, born 2 Apr 1894; married Geneva Mae; died 21 Jan 1974.

Abington B. Parsons died 29 November 1914 in Elmore City, Garvin, Oklahoma. His wife, Sarah Elizabeth (Cantwell) Parsons died on 23 Jan 1936 at the age of 78 in Comanche County, Oklahoma. Abington B. Parson was buried in the Elmore City Cemetery, Elmore City, Garvin County,  Oklahoma. Sarah Elizabeth (Cantwell) Parsons is buried in the Highland Cemetery, Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

Abington B. Parsons is my 1st Cousin 3X Removed.

52 Ancestors: #43, Andrew Washington Sellers

The focus of my blog post today is Pvt. Andrew Washington Sellers, Confederate Soldier

Among the many ancestors I have researched, three men, in my direct lineage, stands heads above the others as men I most admire. They are Hezekiah Brock, my 2nd Great Grandfather, Shadrach Johns, my 2nd Great Grandfather and Andrew Washington Sellers, my Great Grand Uncle. While these three men are mentioned here I in no way want to diminish the achievements of my other relatives. My dad, stands tall among all these men and I admire none of them more than I do my father.  

I have written about each of these men previously but today we will revisit with Andrew Washington Sellers.

Andrew Washington Sellers grew up in tough times without his father. Shortly after his birth, his father William Eddins Sellers took his family to Madison County, Tennessee where some of their Sellers relatives had migrated. Sometime before Andrew turned 10, about or before 1854, his father, William Eddins Sellers was killed in an accident. Their mother, Elizabeth (Parsons) Sellers packed up her 4 sons and two daughters and moved back to Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{1 2} 

At the breakout of the Civil War, Andrew Washington, enlisted on 26 December 1861 as a private with Company A, 4th SC Cavalry. On the September-October 1864 Muster Roll he is shown on detached duty to Stoney Creek with an unserviceable horse. This tuned out to be an unfortunate event because on 1 December 1864, Andrew Washington Sellers, was captured at Stoney Creek, taken prisoner and sent to Pt. Lookout, Maryland. He was released after taking the “Oath of Allegiance” 19 June 1865. This is 13 days after the official end of the War on 6 June 1865.^{3 4}

 

My blog posting “Interview with a Confederate Veteran” is his experience in his words and is highly recommended. In this article Andrew Washington refers to a “Bronze Cross of Honor” that he was awarded. The interview was conducted in 1932 and I suspect this Bronze Cross of Honor was in fact the “Southern Cross of Honor” presented to Andrew sometime after the Civil War by the Stonewall Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.⁵



Andrew Washington married Catherine Pinkney Wallace on 27 December 1865. They had nine children; 5 sons and 4 daughters. Catherine passed away on 30 December 1912. Andrew Washington Sellers,passed away on 12 January 1935, at age 90 and was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church cemetery.^{6 7}

52 Ancestors #4~William Eddins Sellers

William Eddins Sellers is my 2nd Great Grandfather on the maternal side of my family.
 
Family tradition states that William Eddins Sellers died about 1854 in Madison County, Tennessee.¹
I know from the 1850 population Census that William E. and Noah Sellers were in Madison County. William Eddins and Noah were brothers.²  



We can see from the 1850 Census above that Andrew W. Sellers was born about 1844 in South Carolina and his baby brother James A. Sellers was born about 1846 in Tennessee. This would indicate that William Eddins and his wife Elizabeth Parsons moved their family from Chesterfield, SC between 1844 and 1846. William Eddins is listed as age 30 in the 1850 Census thus making his birth years about 1820 in Chesterfield, SC.

 William Eddins Sellers was born about 1820 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.³ He died about 1854 at the age of 34 in Madison County, Tennessee. ⁴
 
William Eddins Sellers and Elizabeth Parsons were married about 1840. Elizabeth Parsons, daughter of Abington Parsons and Mary, was born on 9 Mar 1822 in North Carolina.^{5 6 7 8 9}
 
In 1860, we find Elizabeth Parson Sellers back in Chesterfield without her husband providing credence to the fact that William Eddins Sellers either died, was killed or some calamity occurred between 1850 and 1860.^10 11 Another indicator is that their youngest son was born in 1854, thus William Eddins died between 1853 and 1860.




Her youngest son Alonzo W. Sellers died from measles in April 1860.

1871 Sellers-Alexander Marriage

Andrew J. Sellers is the son of Noah Sellers and his wife Timmie Ellen Parsons. In the late 1840’s between 1846 and 1848 Noah and his Brother William Eddins who were married to sisters (Timmie & Elizabeth Parsons) moved their families from Chesterfield, South Carolina to Tennessee. ^1-2

About 1854, William Eddins Sellers was killed while raising a roof on a local church (family folklore) and Elizabeth took herself and the children back to Chesterfield County, South Carolina.³

Then sometime in the early 1870, Charles White, a Sellers descendant, reports that Andrew J. Sellers came to Texas and then returned to Madison County to married Sarah Amanda Alexander. They were married on 18 January 1871. ⁴ 

Next the oldest son James Calhoun moved his family to Fannin County, Texas. It was here in Fannin County that James Calhoun married Mary Lee Moore on 27 October 1887. ⁵ 

After the marriage of Andrew and Sarah they stayed on for a while in Madison County most likely until the death of Andrew’s father Noah Sellers. There are various reports that Noah died in 1894; none have been confirmed. At that time, he brought his Mother, Timmie Parsons Sellers, to Ellis County, Texas to live with his brother, William A. Sellers and his wife Eppie Irene Young.⁶

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1899, Timmie Parsons Sellers died in Ellis County, Texas In 1900, Andrew and Sarah were living in Fannin County, Texas.⁷ A short time later they moved to Sulphur, McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

There are reports that Sarah Amanda Alexander Sellers died on 28 July 1901 and that Andrew J. Sellers died  on 12 February 1905 and both are buried in Sulphur, McCurtain County, Oklahoma..

I have not been able to confirm either of these two dates. In 1880, Andrew and Sarah are listed in the Madison County, TN census and in 1900, they are listed in the Fannin County, TX  Census. If you have evidence that can confirmed either of these two dates, please contact me. No tombstone has been found for Andrew or Sarah Sellers.

Military Monday~Pvt. James Arnold Sellers

James Arnold Sellers was born Sept 16, 1846¹ in Madison County, Tennessee to William Eddins Sellers and Elizabeth Parsons. William & Elizabeth left Chesterfield County, SC sometime before 1850. They are enumerated in the 1850 Census for Madison County, NC.²

SELLERS, Male, age 30, born in SC; Elizabeth SELLERS, age 28, born in SC; William R. SELLERS, Son, age 8, born in SC;  Andrew W. SELLERS, Son, age 6, born in SC; James A. SELLERS, Son, age 4, born in TN; Mary A. SELLERS, Daughter, age 2, born in TN and Luellen SELLERS, Daughter, age 1/12, born in TN.

Family tradition says that William Eddins Sellers was killed when he fell from the rafters of a church being built in 1854 Carroll County, Tennessee. (I have not been able to prove or disprove this folklore).³

In 1860, Elizabeth has returned to Chesterfield County without her husband  and 6 children; 4 sons and 2 daughter, one daughter is my great grandmother. Circumstantial evidence give some credibility to the story; something happen to William Eddins Sellers in Madison County, Tennessee. 
Regardless, she back home with 4 sons and rumors of War abounds.⁴

In January 1862, South Carolina succeeds from the Union.  On April 12, the first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter.

By the end of 1861, her two oldest sons, William Riley and Andrew Washington Sellers had enlisted (Dec. 26, 1861) into the War.⁵

James  Arnold stayed behind at the early part of the war to take care of his Mother Elizabeth, two sisters, Mary Abigail and Louise Ellen Sellers. His younger brother Alonzo W. Sellers had passed away in April 1860. 

Then on February 26, 1863, James Arnold enlisted with Company “D”, 6th Regiment Calvary.⁶
James Arnold Sellers was wounded at Trevilian Station, VA on 11 June 1864; the first day of a 2 day battle.⁷ 



James Arnold returned home after the War, married twice and had elven (11) children between two wives. James Arnold and Sarah Jane had 8 children and with Nancy Jane Johnson he had three additional children.

James Arnold “Buck” Sellers died March 14, 1904. He is buried at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁸
